Elizabeth Hall Coffin Stevens

1920-2003

SKOWHEGAN —Elizabeth Hall Coffin Stevens, 83, died Saturday, May 31, 2003, at the Redington Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan.

She was born in Skowhegan on March 1, 1920, the daughter of Robert and Bertha (Thompson) Hall. She attended the schools in Skowhegan, graduating from Skowhegan High School in 1937, cum laude.

She was office manager for McLullan Store in Skowhegan from 1937 to 1944. She worked for Sears in Skowhegan in 1944-1945, and then transferred to the Sears Order office in Waterville as manager in 1945.

In 1957 she married H. Bartlett Coffin of Bangor, and transferred to the Sears in Bangor. In 1961, she went to work for W.T. Grant in Bangor as office and personnel manager and also worked in hiring and training in the new Grant stores.

She and her husband owned a yacht and kept it at Southwest Harbor. She and her husband both belonged to the Coast Guard Auxiliary and obtained their Coast Guard Licenses. They spent most of their weekends touring the coast of Maine and have many friends in that area. Her husband, H. Bartlett Coffin, died in 1972. In 1974, she married Elby Stevens Jr. of Holden and Caribou; he died in 1994. They bought a home at Lakewood and retired there.

While in Bangor she took an active part in the First United Methodist Church. She joined the Skowhegan Federated Church in 1984, and she and her husband have been members since returning to the Skowhegan Area. Elizabeth was past president of the Semper Fidelis Club in Skowhegan. A charter member of the Beta Sigma Phi Chapter of Waterville, she was past president of the Waterville and Bangor chapters. She was very active in the Order of Eastern Star, Bangor Sunshine Club for the Crippled Children, Emden Historical Society, and a member of the Senior Citizens Group of Aurora. She was member of the Skowhegan Women's Club.

She enjoyed all types of crafts, particularly her flower garden. She has a very large collection of antique wedge wood and wooden nickels.

She will be sadly missed by many close friends, a special friend Audrey Geagan and her companion "Oscar," her dog.

Friends and relatives may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, at the Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 4, at the Federated Church in Skowhegan with Rev. Mark Tanner officiating. Interment will take place at Mount Hope Cemetery in Bangor, following the service.

Royce E. Temple

1930-2003

PALMYRA — Royce E. Temple, 73, of Palmyra died Saturday morning, May 31, 2003, at his residence surrounded by his loving family in Palmyra.

He was born in Palmyra, May 24, 1930, the son of Howard and Muriel (Whitney) Temple. He married Charlotte Buker on April 21, 1964, in Palmyra. He gathered with Christians to celebrate the Lord Jesus Christ.

Royce loved gardening, tending to his strawberries and dry beans. He also had a vegetable stand, supplying area markets. He had a love for music, guitar playing and recording. Royce enjoyed socializing in local restaurants, witnessing the love of the savior the Lord Jesus Christ. He had a wry sense of humor. He also had his own trucking business, in construction work.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte, of Palmyra; two daughters, Eugenia Clukey and her husband, Michael, of Sangerville and Pamela Kay and husband James Powers of Etna; a son, Hadley Buker and wife Ella of Hartland; a daughter-in-law, Annie Furlong; eight grandchildren, Crystal and husband Colin Moore, Heather Jean Clukey, James Powers, Sabrina and husband James Ivory Jr., George A. Furlong IV and wife Charity, Heidi Withee, Bernie Buker and Betsy and husband Shawn Coots; and six great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, George A. Furlong III, and a daughter, Pamela Joy Temple.

Friends and relatives may call from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, at the Donald H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, at the funeral home with friend and brother in the Lord, Bruce Conrad will be celebrating Royce's life. Interment will be at the Palmyra Village Cemetery in Palmyra.

Marion Faye Clough

1907-2003

FARMINGTON — Marion Faye Clough, 95, a resident of Orchard Park Rehabilitation and Living Center, died Friday, July 25, 2003, at the nursing home where she had been a resident for a little more than two years.

She was born in Boston Oct. 25, 1907, a daughter of Harry A. and Ula (Hapgood) Parsons. She was a 1925 graduate of Gould Academy. On March 31, 1937, she married Robert Clough in Bethel. Mr. Clough died in 1981.

Mrs. Clough was a devoted wife and mother. She enjoyed attending agricultural fairs with her late husband and in her free time enjoyed knitting and working on crossword and jigsaw puzzles.

She is survived by three sons, Robert Clough and his wife, Joan, of Chesterville, Fred Clough and his wife, Roberta, of Fairbanks, and Elmore Clough and his wife, Joan, of Waterville; one daughter, Barbara Butterfield and her husband, Dennis, of Chesterville; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a granddaugher, Angela Butterfield, who died in 1990; also three sisters and one brother.

Public memorial graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, July 30, from the Webster Cemetery, Route 156, North Chesterville, with the Rev. John Tolman officiating.

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be given in her memory to the Resident Activity Fund at Orchard Park Rehabilitation and Living Center, ATTN: Joyce Hardy, 107 Orchard St., Farmington 04938. Arrangements are under the direction of Wiles Funeral Home, Cremation Service and Bereavement Resource Center, 137 Farmington Falls Road (U.S. Route 2 and Route 27), Farmington.

Maurice W. Dodge

1942-2003

DETROIT — Maurice W. Dodge, 60, died July 26, 2003, at a Pittsfield hospital.

He was born in Detroit on Dec. 29, 1942, son of Jerome and Jennie (Frost) Dodge. He was a member of the Deeper Life Assembly in Pittsfield.

He loved to hunt and enjoyed buying and selling cars. In recent years he worked as the manager of the Newport Transfer Station.

He is survived by his wife, Linda (Wallace) Dodge of Detroit; a son, Shawn and his wife, Lisa Bickford, of Etna; three daughters, Melissa Amoroso and her husband, Jeff, of Newport, Sherri Foss and her fiancee, Eddie Leeman, of Corinna, and Kimberly Dodge-Cummings and her husband, George, of Brewer; a sister, Kathleen Hart of Pittsfield; five brothers, Jack of Plymouth, Richard of Pittsfield, Jerome Jr. of Cornville, Ronnie of Dexter and Glendon of Corinna; seven grandchildren, Wayne, Nicholas and Michael Bickford of Etna, Derek and Justin Amoroso of Newport, Ricki-Lynn Foss of Corinna, and Caid Dodge of Brewer; many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Shirley Dodge; and a very special granddaughter, Mandi Foss.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 28, at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Newport. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home with Pastor Millard Dickinson officiating. Burial will be in the Village Cemetery in Detroit. Those who wish may make donations to the Mandi Foss Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Donna Cray, Nokomis Regional High, 266 Williams Road, Newport 04953.

Neota F. Grady

WHITEFIELD — Neota Fowles Grady, 90, formerly of Whitefield and Farmingdale, died Saturday, July 1, 2000, at the MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Glenridge in Augusta.

She was born in Whitefield, July 31, 1909, the daughter of George E. and Minnie (Dow) Fowles. She had lived in the same house where she was born until June 1984, lacking only four months of 75 years.

She attended the Kings Mills School, the two-year Whitefield High School (1922-1923), and graduated from Cony High School in June 1925. She attended Farmington Normal School and graduated in June of 1927.

From that September until the early 1940s, she taught at the Kings Mills, Carleton and Church schools of Whitefield, with the exception of the spring term of 1936 when she taught at South Windsor and the year 1936-1937 when she taught at Windsor Corner.

For much of the 1940s, Neota was at home, but in 1950 returned to teach grades 5-8 at Kings Mills. In the fall of 1959, she moved into the new Whitefield School as the fifth-grade teacher. In 1965, she became the reading teacher in Grades 5 and 6 and the assistant music teacher at Pray Street School in Gardiner. She retired from there in June 1970 with credit for teaching 37 years.

In July 1939, Miss Fowles and Joseph G. Grady, also of Whitefield, were married. In November 1945, a son, Alan George, was born. Alan passed away in January 1962 at age 16. He was a junior at Wiscasset High School at the time.

During World War II, Neota served as ration deputy for Whitefield, Jefferson and Somerville. She served as town treasurer of Whitefield from 1943 through 1945. She was president of the Lincoln County Women's Republican Club for two years, which led her to decide to become one of the Lincoln County candidates for representative to the Legislature, representing Alna, Jefferson, Newcastle, Somerville, Waldoboro and Whitefield. She was elected and served in the 89th (1939-1940) and 90th (1941-1942) Legislatures.

At the 1939 annual convention of the Maine Teachers Association, Neota was elected to the MTA Executive Committee, representing the Rural Schoolteachers. For the next several years she served on various MTA committees. She was appointed to the first State Certification Committee under the newly formed State Board of Education and served for five years in the late 1950s and '60s. From 1963 to May 1965, she was president of the Maine Department of Classroom Teachers. In the fall of 1970, she joined the Kennebec Retired Teacher Association and in 1972 she was elected president of that group for the following two years. She was also a member of the Lincoln County Retired Teachers Association.

In 1973, Neota was appointed to the NRTA-AARP Maine State Legislative Committee, serving as chairwoman of the committee during 1975-1976 and continued on the committee until 1983. In 1973 she was named legislative chairwoman of the Maine (State) Retired Teachers Association from which she resigned in 1985 after serving 12 years. In October 1985 she was named an honorary life member of MRTA.

In the spring of 1984, Neota sold her home in Whitefield and moved into an apartment in Farmingdale. She was a lifetime member, former treasurer and organist for many years at the Whitefield Union Church and Helping Hand Society. She was a 70-year member of the Grange and she played the piano for local, county and area Grange rituals and functions. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Volunteer Fire Department, Kings Mills.

Neota was very dedicated to the community of Whitefield.

She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Hattie Sweetland and Annie Collier, both of Manchester, special friends, Jerry and Judy Maldovan, and their children of Whitefield; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may gather from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. with a funeral following at 11 a.m. at the Whitefield Union Church in Kings Mills with the Rev. Philip Poland officiating. Burial will follow in the family lot at the Whitefield Cemetery. A gathering of friends and relatives will be held at the Kings Mills Union Hall following the committal service; all are welcome.

Contributions may be made in her memory to the Kings Mills Union Hall or to a favorite charity. Arrangements are under the care of Staples Funeral Home of Gardiner.

Kenneth P. Wood

WATERVILLE — Kenneth Plummer Wood, 47, of Western Avenue in Waterville and a former resident of Somerville, died Saturday, July 1, 2000, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Thayer Campus, Waterville, from complications of kidney disease.

He was born in Augusta, April 5, 1953, the son of Richard and Gloria (French) Wood, and attended local schools.

He had been employed by Hallowell Shoe Co. Despite his illness, which left him blind, Kenneth had worked at the X-ray Department in Waterville at the former Mid-Maine Medical Center until recent years.

Ken was grateful for the support and treatment that he received at the hospital on both the medical unit and the dialysis unit.

Surviving are his mother, Gloria Wood Hill, of Somerville; his daughter, Erica Cox, and husband, Marshall, and his granddaughter, Kayla Wood, all of Fairfield; his two stepsisters, Crystal Hill, of Texas, and Shelby Brown, of North Dakota; three aunts, Evelyn French, of Somerville, Mary Kimball and Mary Ferguson, both of North Whitefield; an uncle, Paul French, of Augusta; several cousins, and many friends, including his close friend, Jim Dostie.

His father, Richard Wood, his stepfather, Bill Hill, and his uncle, Bucky French, all died previously.

At his request, no visiting hours are planned. A graveside funeral and committal prayers will be offered at 4 p.m. Monday, July 3, at Sand Hill Cemetery in Somerville with the Rev. Warner Howard officiating.

If desired, the family suggests memorial gifts to either Delta Ambulance, Waterville, or Sand Hill Cemetery Association. Donations may be mailed in care of the funeral home to Gray & Pratt Funeral Directors, P.O. Box 10, Windsor ME 04363-0010.

Walter J. Brennan

READFIELD — Walter J. "Wally" Brennan, 47, of Touisset Point in Readfield, died of a heart attack early Friday morning, June 2, 2000, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.

He was born Jan. 10, 1953, in Boston, Mass., son of Harry Sawyer Brennan and Doris (Paquin) Brennan.

He graduated from Winthrop High School in 1971 but attended his junior year at New Hampton Academy in New Hampshire. He wished to return to Winthrop High School his senior year to graduate with his friends and classmates. For both schools, Walter played football, basketball and baseball. He also played in Winthrop Youth League, Babe Ruth League and Winthrop American Legion. In 1971, he was selected by the Boston Red Sox to pitch for the New England All-Star Team in a game played at Fenway Park in Boston.

Walter attended Florida Southern College in Lakeland, where he was a dean's list student and president of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. In 1975, he graduated with a bachelor of science degree in physical education. He enrolled in the Fort Lauderdale Baseball School and the professional Al Somers School for Umpires in Daytona Beach, Fla.

From 1975 to 1979, Walter, his brother, James, and father, Harry, operated the Augusta Baseball School at Don Brennan Field, Capitol Park, Augusta; the school received a good turnout of enthusiastic players, ages 8 to 16.

In 1976 he joined Welcome Aboard Travel Agency in Augusta as a travel agent, with many loyal clients. He became president of the Agency in 1990, until a merger with Dube Travel in March 2000.

Walter's active enjoyments ranged from water and snow skiing, canoeing, hunting, fishing, tennis and quality time spent at the family camp in the Rangeley region surrounded by lakes, rivers and woods.

Survivors include his parents of East Winthrop; his brother, James Donald Brennan, and wife, Ruth (Travis) Brennan, of Augusta, and their two children, Tara and Garrett; his loving companion, Ora Lee Bruen; many uncles, aunts and cousins.

At the family's request, there will be no visiting hours.

A funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, at St. Francis Xavier Church, Lake Street, Winthrop, with the Rev. Peter Misner officiating. Burial will follow at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Bath. Arrangements are by Roberts Funeral Home of Winthrop.

Nancy J.W. Swanson

READFIELD — Nancy J.W. Swanson, 64, of Readfield, died Saturday, June 3, 2000, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care, Graybirch Drive, Augusta.

She was born March 8, 1936, in Biddeford, daughter of Seth A. and Leora (Jenney) Whitcomb.

She attended Saco and Readfield schools, graduating from Kents Hill School. She attended the University of Maine at Orono, Providence Bible Institute, and the University of Maine at Augusta. She became a registered nurse and was employed by Brighton Hospital, Waterville Osteopathic Hospital and Augusta General Hospital. She also did some private duty nursing, retiring in 1999.

Nancy was a member of Hope Baptist Church in Manchester. She enjoyed traveling, arts and crafts, and reading.

Nancy was predeceased by her parents, and one brother, Nathan E. Whitcomb.

Survivors include three brothers, Ross Whitcomb, of Lancaster, Texas, Aaron A. Whitcomb, of Readfield, and Cyrus E. Whitcomb, of Readfield; two sisters, Martha Whitcomb, of Readfield, and Harriet Bulmer, of Smithfield; several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends may visit from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 5, at Roberts Funeral Home, 26 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, where a funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 6, with pastor Dan Bowers officiating. Burial will follow at the Readfield Corner Cemetery.

Walter G. Hart

SOUTH GARDINER — Walter G. Hart, 74, of River Road in South Gardiner, died unexpectedly Saturday, May 6, 2000, at his home.

He was born in Appleton, May 9, 1925, the son of George and Leola (Ripley) Hart, and graduated from Appleton High School.

Walter had been employed for 30 years at the Statler Tissue Co. in Augusta, retiring in 1983.

He was a 46-year member of the South Gardiner Baptist Church and an Army veteran of World War II with service in the Philippines and Japan.

He loved visiting his family and telling stories. He loved his family a great deal. They were his treasures in life, his legacy.

He was predeceased by three sisters, Alice Knight, Helen Ware and Hazel Carney.

Survivors include his four sons, Walter Hart, of Pittston, Bruce Hart, of Augusta, Keith Hart, of Augusta, and Philip Hart, of South Gardiner; two brothers, Almond Hart, of Ashburnham, Mass.. and Starling Hart, of Gardner, Mass.; his sister, Abbie Essency, of Burkettville; 11 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 8, at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will follow at the family lot in the Miller Cemetery in Burkettville.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the South Gardiner Baptist Church, c/o Rev. Stuart Hilton, River Road, South Gardiner ME 04359; or to a church of one's church.
