Patricia E. Royal

GARDINER — Patricia E. Royal, 59, of Lincoln Avenue, died unexpectedly Saturday, May 6, 2000, at the MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.

She was born in Gardiner, Nov. 4, 1940, the daughter of Donald and June (Lemar) Gould.

A graduate of Gardiner High School, class of 1959, Pat had been the librarian at Wales Central School for many years. For the past two years, she had been employed at E.J. Prescott Co. in Gardiner.

She loved her family and will be sadly missed.

She was the loving mother of four children: Jeffrey Pushard, and his wife, Heidi, of Wales, Gary Pushard, and his wife, Cathy, of Richmond, Lynne Marie Hanley, and her husband, Timothy, of Gardiner, and Shanna Royal, of Florida.

She is also survived by her father, Donald Gould, and his wife, Leah, of South Gardiner; her stepfather, William J. Donovan, of Pittston; her sister, Judy Rogers, of South Gardiner; three half-sisters, Rita Lessner, of West Gardiner, Kitty Knox, of Colorado, Nancy Stanley, of Gardiner; three half-brothers, William Donovan II, of Whitefield, Donald Gould, of South Gardiner, and Thomas Gould, of Chelsea; her sister-in-law, Janice Gould, of Randolph; her aunt, Mona Lemar; and nine loving grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a half-brother, Michael Donovan, who was of Brunswick.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner, where a funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 10. Burial will follow at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Gardiner.

Reta E. Baker

EAST WINTHROP — Reta Elizabeth Baker, 84, of East Winthrop, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at Heritage Rehabilitation & Living Center in Winthrop.

She was born April 10, 1915, in Belgrade, daughter of Eli and Florence (Chase) Wadleigh, and graduated from Winthrop High School in 1932 and attended Farmington Normal School.

In 1935, Reta married Chester Baker of East Winthrop.

She was a member of the 102nd and 103rd Legislatures, serving the towns of Winthrop, Wayne, Readfield and Monmouth.

Mrs. Baker was a member of the East Winthrop Baptist Church and its Loyal Daughters Church Club, a 40-year member of its choir, had held offices in the local, county and state levels of the American Baptist Convention of Maine and served five years on the board of directors for the China Lake Conference Center.

Reta and her husband spent part of their summers at their cottages in Ocean Park, (the new England Baptist Conference Center) and she was a member of the board of trustees for the buildings and grounds.

Mrs. Baker was a member and past matron of Abenaki Chapter 116, Order of Eastern Star, in Winthrop, and a member of Mary Kelton Drummer-Patience Stanley Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, and Colonial Dames XVII Century.

She was a member of the East Winthrop Thursday Club, the S&M Club and Winthrop Grange. She was a member of two national camping clubs, The Good Sam Club, of which she was a charter member and secretary-treasurer of the local chapter, Capitol Area Wheels, and the National Family Camping Association, Pine Tree Chapter 33.

Mrs. Baker was a correspondent for the Kennebec Journal for 20 years.

Reta and her husband founded and operated Baker's Bus Service for 30 years from 1946 to 1976, providing transportation for all students in the Winthrop school system. They also provided a bus ministry for the East Winthrop Church as well as a church in Augusta.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1993, and her son, Robert, in 1972.

Survivors include a son, Herbert Baker, and wife, Janice, of East Winthrop; sister, Norma Strickland, of Gardiner; stepsister, Sally Morrissey, of Manchester; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held in the spring at Roberts Funeral Home of Winthrop.

Honorary pallbearers will be William Baker, grandson, of Bangor; Robert Baker, grandson, of Winthrop; Frank Benson, of East Winthrop; Gerry Hinds, of Wayne; Charles Frost, of Farmington; and James Hinds, of East Winthrop.

Lawrence A. Brann Jr.

AUGUSTA — Lawrence Alden "Larry" Brann Jr., 71, a native of Jefferson, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta Campus, after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Jefferson, Sept. 22, 1928, the son of Lawrence Alden and Gertrude (Noyes) Brann, and attended the Murphy School and also the Browntown School in Jefferson.

He married Marian Robishaw in Jefferson on April 17, 1948.

Larry enjoyed family outings and cookouts and was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying fishing. He was a fan of boxing and Western films.

Larry was married for 49 years and helped raise six children.

He had been employed at Dalton Lumber in Augusta and worked in the woods for several years for Donald Northrup. Prior to retirement, Larry drove trucks for Jack Tobey.

Surviving are four sons, Donald Brann, and wife, Michelle, of Augusta, Daniel Brann, and wife, Ina, of Windsor, Larry Brann, and wife, Pauline, of Whitefield, and Wendall Brann, and wife, Andrea, of Augusta; two daughters, Judith Butler, and husband, William, of North Kingstown, R.I., and Verna Cleaves, and husband, Scott, of Jefferson; three brothers, James Brann, of Jefferson, Oliver Brann, of Whitefield, and Charles Brann, of Augusta; his sister, Ethel Noyes, of Jefferson; 19 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and his former wife, Marian (Robishaw) Brann, of Augusta.

Visiting hours are from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 28, at Gray & Pratt Funeral Home, Windsor Neck Road, Windsor, where a funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 29, with the Rev. Warner Howard officiating. Spring interment will be at Highland Cemetery in Jefferson.

If desired, the family suggests memorial gifts to Windsor Ambulance Association, PO Box 46, Windsor ME 04363; contribution envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Raymond A. Fortin

AUGUSTA — Raymond A. Fortin, 62, of Cony Road, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta after a long illness.

He was born in Augusta, Aug. 7, 1937, the son of Henry Fortin and Marion (Cloutier) Fortin, and attended Augusta schools.

He was employed as a painter and paperhanger by Jean-Paul Fortin Painting Contractor for 10 years. He previously was employed by Sid Pare & Son Painters and Don Larochelle and he was self-employed for a time.

Raymond was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He liked listening to country music, playing horseshoes and pool. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed being with his children and grandchildren.

Raymond was preceded in death by his father; and a brother, Roger Fortin, in 1936.

Surviving is his wife, Patricia (Vigue) Fortin, of Augusta; his mother, of Augusta; four sons, Armand Fortin, Timothy Fortin, and his wife, Paula, Raymond Fortin Jr., and his wife, Penny, and Randy Fortin, all of Augusta; three sisters, Theresa Gilbert, and her husband, Noel, of Chelsea, Reinette Lapierre, and her husband, Robert, and Sylvia Douin, and her husband, Dominique, all of Augusta; six grandchildren and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 29, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 1, at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Kendall Street, Augusta. Spring interment is planned at the Holy Family Cemetery.

Memorial gifts may be made to the American Heart Association, Maine-New Hampshire-Vermont Affiliate Inc., PO Box 346, Augusta ME 04332-0346.

Janette Gerrish

OLD ORCHARD BEACH —Janette Gerrish, 69, of Pine Wood Manor in Ocean Park, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at St. Andre's Health Care Facility in Biddeford.

She was born Feb. 24, 1931, on Vinal Haven Island, daughter of Armand F. and Leontine (Berube) Ledoux, and attended Old Orchard Beach High School.

She was a former member of the Old Orchard Beach Methodist Church.

He had been employed by Morningstar of Kennebunk and later by Components of Kennebunk. She was a former member of the Common Connection Club of Biddeford.

Survivors include her mother, of Biddeford; her husband, Frank Gerrish Jr., of Naples; three sons, John M. Gerrish, of Palermo, David S. Gerrish, of Naples, and Thomas P. Gerrish, of Windsor; three brothers, Marcel Joseph Ledoux, of Biddeford, Joseph, R. Ledoux, of Atlanta, Ga., and Victor Ledoux, of Old Orchard Beach; two sisters, Lucienne M. Cook, of Burlington, Mass., and Adele Ledoux, of Old Orchard Beach; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A visiting hour will be held from 11 a.m. until the noon memorial service Tuesday, Feb. 29, at Cote Funeral Home, James Street, Saco, with the Rev. Doug Mays officiating. Burial will follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Saco.

Granville W. Manley

WHITEFIELD — Granville William "Bill" Manley, 79, of Whitefield, died Saturday morning, Feb. 26, 2000, at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta.

He was born in Freedom, May 16, 1920, the son of Jasper and Maude (Mills) Manley.

A graduate of Unity High School, Class of 1937, Bill had served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served three years in the Pacific Theater, seeing action in Guadalcanal, New Caledonia and New Guinea.

He married Edith Guzzetti, Sept. 29, 1945, in Chicago, Ill. In May 1955, they moved to North Whitefield, where he lived until his admittance to the Maine Veterans Home in 1983.

Bill raised Hereford cattle and was employed at the Veterans Administration Center at Togus.

Mr. Manley was predeceased by his brother, Harrison Manley, and his parents.

Survivors include his friend and former wife, Edith Manley, of Whitefield; his brother, Wilfred Manley, and his wife, Patricia, of Windsor; his sister, Mabel San Fillipo, of Waterville; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many of the nursing staff at the Maine Veterans Home, who had become devoted, loving caregivers during the 17 years he lived there.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 28, at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner. Burial will be in the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Protectors of Animal Life Society, Case Road, East Winthrop ME 04343.

Cora E. Sharpe

AUGUSTA — Cora Esma Sharpe, 86, formerly of Gardiner, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation & Nursing Care at Gray Birch in Augusta.

She was born in Bowdoin, Feb. 14, 1914, the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth (Hutchins) McAfee, and attended Bowdoin schools.

She had resided for many years in Boston and relocated to Maine in the early 1980s, residing in the Gardiner and Augusta areas.

She was predeceased by her husband, Gary Sharpe; her sister, Mary Reynolds, and her brother, Robert McAfee.

Survivors include her son, Robert Sharpe, of West Roxbury, Mass.; sister-in-law, Mabel McAfee, of Wiscasset; three nieces and nephews, Leontine Reed, of Wiscasset, Cheryl Welton, of Oregon, and Glenn McAfee, of Wiscasset.

At her request, there will be no service. Arrangements are under the care of Staples Funeral Home of Gardiner.

Amalie R. Crandall

MILLINOCKET Amalie R. Crandall, 82, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, at Camden Health Care Center after a period of declining health.

Born in Samarcand, N.C., Nov. 19, 1917, she was the daughter of Lucie B. and Mary (Andersen) Rutland.

She was a graduate of Hernando High School in Williston, Fla., and attended Bryant-Straton College in Boston where she met her future husband, A. Kermit Crandall. They were married at Presque Isle, April 2, 1939. In 1955, she and her husband moved to Ashland, where he served as town manager. In 1964, they moved to Millinocket when Mr. Crandall was appointed town manager there.

At the time of her death, Mrs. Crandall still maintained her home in Millinocket. She had resided with her son in Rockland for the past six years. A devoted homemaker, she was active in the Maine Contract Bridge Association, the Millinocket Garden Club and the Literary Society in Millinocket and Ashland.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1975, Mrs. Crandall is survived by two sons and their wives, Winston K. and Kathie Crandall, of Albuquerque, N.M., and Wayne R. and Ann Crandall, of Rockland; one daughter and her husband, Barbara and Albert Godfrey, of Gardiner; a close friend who resided with the Crandalls during her teen-age years, Sandra Hedrich, of Presque Isle; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, from the R.L. Bouchard Funeral Home, 11 Tamarack St., Millinocket, with the Rev. Dr. Patrick D. Seymour, pastor of the First Congregational Church of Millinocket officiating. Interment will follow in the Millinocket Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Maine Affiliate Inc., PO Box 2208, Augusta ME 04338-2208.

Funeral arrangements are with the Burpee-Strong Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St., Rockland.
