SIDNEY James Hyle Heckerd, 66, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at his home on the Pond Road in Sidney.

He was born April 24, 1934, in Milford, Conn., son of Jack Hutchinson and Elizabeth Miller (Hogeland) Heckerd.

He had served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and then was employed by Sears Roebuck & Co. and was a member of the Augusta police force. Mr. Heckerd then was employed by the state Department of Transportation for 22 years, retiring in 1990.

He was a former member of the AF&AM, Bethlehem Lodge and Kora Karts.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Vera (Leighton) Heckerd, of Sidney; two sons, Jay Heckerd, of Camden, and Lee Heckerd, of Tarpin, Fla.; two daughters, Van Laliberte, of Union, and Jeanne Krechko, of Connecticut; two sisters, Elizabeth Hatch, of Rollar, Mo., and Jacquline Kovacsics, of Beaufort, S.C.; and seven grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held later at Resthaven Cemetery in Windsor. Arrangements are by Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home of Augusta.

Contributions in Mr. Heckerd's memory may be made to the Kennebec Valley Humane Society, Pet Haven Lane, Augusta ME 04330.

<*hed>Esther McNamara

WINTHROP Esther McNamara, 92, of 24 Main St., died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at Nicholson's Long Term Care & Rehabilitation Center in Winthrop.

She was born Feb. 27, 1908, in Winthrop, daughter of Clarence and Mabel (Marshall) Rowell.

She graduated from Winthrop High School in 1925. For many years, she was actively involved in the operation of the McNamara family bakery and restaurants. She was a faithful member of the Winthrop United Methodist Church.

Esther was predeceased by her husband, Richard W. McNamara, in 1985, and her brother, Reginald Rowell.

Survivors include a sister, Marjorie Shane, of Winthrop and Scarborough; two nieces, Janet Heyer, of Scarborough, and Candace Griffith, of Plymouth, Mass., and three nephews, Louis Shane, of Scarborough, John Shane, of Wayland, Mass., and Robert R. McNamara, of San Diego, Calif.

Friends and relatives are invited to visit from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, at Roberts Funeral Home, 26 Bowdoin St., Winthrop.

A celebration of Esther's life will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, at the Winthrop United Methodist Church with the Rev. Heidi Chamberland officiating. Burial will follow at the Maple Cemetery, Main Street, Winthrop.

Contributions in Esther's memory may be made to the Winthrop United Methodist Church, Main Street, Winthrop ME 04364.

<*hed>Lucia H. Topping

SANFORD Lucia Hinkley Topping, 85, of Shawmut Avenue, Sanford, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000.

She was born Nov. 2, 1914, in Milbridge, daughter of Gleason and Edna (Upton) Hinkley.

She attended Milbridge schools and was a graduate of Higgins Classical Institute and Gorham Normal School (now the University of Southern Maine). Before she attended college, she was a telephone operator.

Mrs. Topping taught school for more than 25 years. She began in Milbridge, teaching there for five years before moving to Sanford. She taught in the Sanford school system for 20 years, most of which were spent teaching second grade at the Lincoln School, retiring in 1976.

She was a member of the Search Light Club, the Sanford-Springvale College Club, which consisted of a group of women from the area who would get together once a month, the York County Teachers Association and the Maine Retired Teachers Association. She was also a Girl Scout counselor many years ago.

Mrs. Topping was an avid reader who loved to play bridge, travel and dance.

Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Francis Topping, of Sanford; daughters, Mrs. Francis (Nancy) Westrack, of Winthrop, Mrs. Richard (Helen) Farnsworth, of Kennebunk; grandchildren, Kevin Westrack, Kelley Richards and Dane Farnsworth; four great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, at the Heald Funeral Home, 580 Main St., Springvale. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, at St. Ignatius Church in Sanford.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Louis B. Goodall Memorial Library, 238 Main St., Sanford ME 04073.

Barbara G. Beatty

DENTON, Texas — Barbara Graham Beatty, 91, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2000, of natural causes in Denton.

Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Earle H. (Jim) Beatty, a native of Winthrop, Maine; her two sons, Richard, of Denton, and Bruce, of Norwalk, Conn., their wives, Chris and Kathy, and four grandchildren.

Barbara's family summered in Winthrop starting in 1896. Her grandfather, Oscar R. Graham Sr., built a cottage on the Upper Narrows Pond that remains in the family today. She first summered in Winthrop at the age of 3 and spent all or part of most summers there since then. Her father, Oscar R. Graham Jr., retired to his own cottage on Lake Annabescook.

The family will hold a private memorial service in Denton on Saturday, Nov. 25. A service will be held at the Winthrop Methodist Church in Maine during the summer of 2001.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the building fund of the Winthrop Methodist Church or a local hospice.

Patricia L. Garceau

WEST GARDINER — Patricia L. Garceau, 33, of Primrose Lane, West Gardiner, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2000, at Maine Medical Center, Portland, following a long battle with cancer.

She was born in Taunton, Mass., Aug. 26, 1967, the daughter of Louis A. and Mary Haskell Garceau.

She graduated from Taunton High School and was a personal care attendant for the elderly at Home Resource of Maine in Farmingdale.

Patricia was extremely devoted to her children and her job.

She is survived by her mother, of West Gardiner; three children, Dorothy Garceau, Joshua Guenard and Emily Garceau, all of West Gardiner; five sisters, Deborah Garceau, of Pawtucket, R.I., Mary Garceau, of Taunton, Theresa Garceau, of West Gardiner, Laurie Garceau, of Taunton, and Loretta Marshall, of Taunton; several nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts and cousins.

Visiting hours are 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13, at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, at St. Joseph's Church, Gardiner. Burial will follow, in Cherry Hill Cemetery, West Gardiner.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, New England Division, 52 Federal St., Brunswick 04011.

Leslie B. Higgins

DRESDEN — Leslie B. "Les" Higgins, 80, of Indian Road passed away unexpectedly Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, while proudly marching in the local Veterans Day parade.

He was born in West Bath, the son of Frank and Olive (Bowker) Higgins, Dec. 23, 1919.

He attended Bath schools and started his military career in the National Guard. He went on to serve in the Army as a corporal and later in the Navy, being honorably discharged in 1961.

In civilian life, Les was director of the Emergency Management Team in Augusta for several years.

He was active in town activities, serving on the Dresden School Board and School Building Committee, and was town constable, town selectman and deputy sheriff for Sagadahoc County.

Les was also very involved in many organizations through the years. He was a member and past master of the Dresden Masonic Lodge, member of Bath and Wiscasset Masonic lodges, past commandant of the Dresden-Richmond Veterans Foreign Wars, longtime member of the Richmond Post 132 in Richmond, and the local Lions Club and was cemetery sextant of the Maple Grove Cemetery in Dresden for many years.

He enjoyed the outdoors, cutting wood, bowling and patriotic occasions.

He was predeceased by a brother and sister.

Les is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Hazel (Pushard) Higgins, of Dresden; son, Frank Higgins, of Dresden; sister, Frances Higgins Bixby, of Hebron; several nephews, cousins and one niece; also his two favorite dogs, Rambo and Ashley.

Family and friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, at Kincer Funeral Home, 14 Pleasant St., Richmond, with a Masonic service being held promptly at 7 p.m. and an American Legion service to follow.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Richmond with Father Clement Thibodeau officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Dresden with military honors being provided by the American Legion.

In Les's name, donations may be made to the Humane Society of your choice.

Raymond F. Parent

AUGUSTA — Raymond F. Parent, 52, of Windy Street, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at his home after a long illness.

He was born in Augusta, June 24, 1948, the son of Norman and Anita (Gilbert) Parent.

Ray was a graduate of Cony High School in the class of 1967.

He was employed by Florida Power & Light Co., formerly Central Maine Power Co., for a total of 28 years. He previously was employed briefly by the state of Maine.

Ray was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and the Calumet Club in Augusta.

He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and snowmobiling.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Rosanne (Castonguay) Parent, of Augusta; one son, Kyle A. Parent and his wife, Denise, of Portland; one daughter, Julie E. Parent, of Portland; his mother, Anita Parent, of Augusta; one sister, Therese Golden and her husband, Gary, of Augusta; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, where members of the Calumet Club are asked to meet at 7 p.m. for a prayer service.

A memorial Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Kendall Street, Augusta.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Volunteers of Kennebec Valley, MaineGeneral Medical Center, 150 Dresden Ave., Gardiner 04345; or HealthReach Hospice, P.O. Box 1568, Waterville 04903-1568; donation envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Brian J. Webb

HOUSTON, Texas — Brian J. Webb, 34, of Lumberdale Road, and formerly of Readfield, Maine, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born in Fort Meade, Md., Nov. 14, 1966, the son of Jeffrey Webb and Margaret H. (Morse) Pierce.

Brian was a graduate of Maranacook Community School in Readfield, class of 1985, and of the class of 1989 at the University of Maine, Orono, where he received a bachelor of arts degree and was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity.

Mr. Webb had been employed by Chevron Oil Co. for 10 years as a marketing analyst.

Brian was an avid golfer and all around sports enthusiast. He played football while in high school and more recently played in the softball league in Houston.

He was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Roger H. Morse.

Survivors include his parents, Jeffrey Webb, of Readfield, and Margaret H. (Morse) Pierce, of Sidney, Maine; a sister, Heather Urquhart, of Winthrop, Maine; his maternal grandmother, Hildur C. Bacon, of Berlin, Conn.; his paternal grandparents, Roland V. and Hope Harper Webb, of Island Falls, Maine; a dear friend, Susan Bologna, of Houston; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no public visiting hours. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 8, at Torsey Memorial Church, Kents Hill, Maine. A gathering of family and friends will take place at the church immediately following the service. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in the Readfield Corner Cemetery in Readfield. Arrangements are under the direction of Plummer Funeral Home of Augusta.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, New England Division Inc., 52 Federal St., Brunswick, 04011-2194.
