Leah M. Cline

AUGUSTA — Leah M. Cline, of 80 Willow St., died at her home Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001.

She was one of five daughters born to Orrin O. and Beulah (Ware) McAllister of Augusta.

Mrs. Cline was a lifelong resident of Augusta and a lifelong member of Penney Memorial United Baptist Church in Augusta. She graduated from Cony High School and Farmington Normal School, and continued her education at the University of Maine, Orono, and at Colby College in Waterville.

Leah began her teaching career at Cony Rural School where she taught 28 children — sub-primary through eighth grade. Leah spent the last 25 years of her career teaching fourth grade at Hussey School in Augusta.

She belonged to the local, Maine, and National Educational Organizations, the American Association of University Women, the R.B. Capen Rebekah Lodge and the Eastern Star.

Leah was married to Joseph Cline, who died of brain cancer July 28, 1987.

She is survived by two sisters, Doris W. and Muriel A. McAllister; her son, Dennis A. Cline, and his wife, Claire K.; four grandchildren, Harmony, Justin, Verity and Merit Cline.

Relatives and friends may visit from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta, where a funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. S. Robert Beaumont officiating. A graveside committal service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Riverside Cemetery in Augusta, where Mrs. Cline will be buried next to her husband, Joseph. Memorial contributions may be made to the Meals on Wheels program, Cohen Community Center, Town Farm Road, Hallowell 04347; or to the Penney Memorial United Baptist Church, 35 Grove St., Augusta 04330.

Ada J. Evans

GARDINER — Ada Julia Evans, 94, formerly of West Hill Road in Gardiner, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, at Robinson's Health Care Facility in Gardiner.

She was born in Somerville, Mass., June 20, 1907, the daughter of William and Clara (Williams) Reynolds.

She was a member of Christ Church Episcopal in Gardiner and the Rebekahs.

She is survived by six daughters, Patricia Tuttle, and her husband, Gerry, of Augusta, Shirley Sinclair, and her husband, Robert, of Winthrop, Janice Pushard, and her husband, Paul, of Augusta, Nancy Pare, and husband, Grant, of Gardiner, Judy Moody, of Auburn, Rhona O'Mara, of Hampton, N.H.; two sons, Ronald (Bud) Evans, and his wife, Esther, of Litchfield, and Robert Evans, and his wife, Colleen, of Phippsburg; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Agnes Evans, of Augusta; nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a stepson, Greg, and two sisters, Alma Allen and Cecila Getchell.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, in the family lot at Mount Hope Cemetery in Augusta. Arrangements are under the care of Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner.

Muriel Poulin

AUGUSTA — Muriel Poulin, 75, of Trueworthy Avenue, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at Maine Veterans Home after a long illness.

She was born in Augusta, Sept. 27, 1926, the daughter of John A. and Regina A. (Audet) Poulin.

She was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church and was a member of the Cushnoc Senior Citizens.

Muriel had been employed by Key Bank Corporation for 12 years and had previously been employed by R.P. Hazzard Shoe Co., Taylor Shoe Co. and Commonwealth Shoe Co.

She was predeceased by her father, John A. Poulin.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Gerard Poulin, of Augusta; her mother, Regina A. (Audet) Poulin, of Augusta; her daughter, Linda Duffy, and her husband, Christopher, of Augusta; two sons, Peter J. Poulin, and his wife, Pamela, of Chelsea, and Kenneth G. Poulin, and his fiancee, Carrie Pelletier, of Readfield; two sisters, Yvette Gilbert and Lorette Gagne, both of Augusta; a brother, Raynald M. Poulin, of Randolph; and seven grandchildren and several aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

At her request, there will be no public visiting hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Kendall Street, Augusta. Following cremation, burial will be held at the convenience of the family in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to HealthReach Hospice, P.O. Box 829, Waterville 04903-0829; Hospice Volunteers of Kennebec Valley, 150 Dresden Ave., Gardiner 04345; or St. Augustine Restoration Fund, 5 Kendall St., Augusta 04330. Howard D. Stevenson

AUGUSTA — Howard D. Stevenson, 94, of Riverside Drive, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta Division, after a brief illness.

He was born in Somerville, Mass., Sept. 11, 1907, the son of William R. and Lilla (Spence) Stevenson, and attended school in Medford and Everett, Mass., and received diplomas from Professor Herrick's School of Civil Service and Purdue University on Pest Control Technology.

He founded Modern Pest Services Inc. of Augusta and operated the firm from 1945 until 1973.

Howard was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Florida and was a lifetime honorary member of the National Pest Management Association. In 1999 he was given the Bartlett W. Eldridge Award, the highest recognition the New England Pest Management Association can bestow a member. He was an avid motorcyclist and yachtsman and had been a member of the Wawanock Power Squadron. He also enjoyed spending time at his cottage in Rangeley.

He was predeceased by a brother and a sister.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Jennie A. (Maskewich) Stevenson, of Augusta; a son, Richard E. Stevenson and his wife, Bonnie, of Boothbay; two daughters, Carol A. MacDowell, of Chelsea and Joan M. Thomas, and her husband, Dr. Richard Thomas, of Bangor; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Monday, Nov. 26, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, with the Rev. Michael Gendreau, pastor of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Pelton Hill, Manchester. Doris E. Striar

BANGOR — Doris E. Striar, 90, of 9 McKinley St. in Bangor, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, after a long and productive life, during which she established a reputation for devoted friendship, joi de vivre and for not suffering fools gladly.

She was born Dora E. Mazick in Providence, R.I., July 6, 1911, the daughter of Rebecca (Resnick) Mazick and Max Mazick. On her side of the family, she is still known as Dora.

She was the wife of Louis Striar, of Bangor, who died in 1983. A 50-year survivor of breast cancer, she counseled women that life after that disease could be long and fulfilling. She was for many years the passionate leader of the Bangor Chapter of Youth Aliyah, an organization devoted to saving Jewish children from Nazi persecution and getting them to what was then Palestine. Afterward, she became and remained an ardent Zionist, who devoted energy and resources to the state of Israel from its earliest beginnings. She was also an enthusiastic supporter of numerous charitable organizations in guiding St. Joseph's Hospital in Bangor.

Doris was a member of Congregational Beth Abraham in Bangor, where she was a life member by the Sisterhood. She was a lifelong member of Hadassah and Women's American ORT. Doris was also a member of the Jewish Community Council Center Women's League. Doris Striar's greatest love was for children, especially her granddaughters, great-grandson, and many nieces and nephews.

Doris Striar is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Myles and Lise Lange Striar, of Boston, three granddaughters, Siri Striar, and her husband, Francisco Hernandez, and their son, Emilio Ariel Striar Hernandez, all of Somerville, Mass., Johanna Striar, of Seattle, Wash., and Maria Striar, of New York City; and a sister, Sarah Saklad, of Providence, R.I.

She was predeceased by a brother, Morris Mazick.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 26, at the Jewish Funeral Chapel, 118 Center St., Bangor, under the direction of Rabbi Fred Nebel. Interment will be at the Beth Abraham Cemetery, Mount Hope Avenue, Bangor. Memorial week will be observed at Doris' home, 9 McKinley St., Monday, immediately following interment until 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday through Thursday 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Due to the Sabbath, hours will resume 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday. Services will be held Monday through Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at 9 McKinley St. Those wishing to remember Doris in a special way may contribute in her memory to Youth Aliyah, c/o the Jewish Community Council, 6 State St., Bangor 04402-2066; The Foundation for Breast Cancer Research, c/o Susan G. Joseph F. Younes

AUGUSTA — Joseph Fouad Younes, 56, died unexpectedly early Saturday morning, Nov. 24, 2001, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.

He was born in Lebanon, March 2, 1945, the son of Fouad and Maria (Armani) Younes, and attended school in Lebanon and came to the United States in the early 1980s. He co-owned and operated a restaurant in Boston before moving to the Augusta area, where he has since resided. A self-employed architect, he will be remembered by his family and many friends as an extremely kind and generous man, and he will be dearly missed by them all.

His father, Fouad Younes, predeceased him.

Joseph is survived by his mother, Maria Younes, of Augusta; his two brothers, Naji and Tony Younes, both of Augusta; his two sisters, Angelle Habib and Florence Assaf, both of Augusta; and many, many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church Street, Augusta. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated the same day, following visiting hours, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Western Avenue, Augusta, with the Rev. Mike Gendreau, celebrant. Robin S. Rankin

GARDINER — A celebration of the life of Robin S. Rankin, who died Nov. 20, 2001, was held Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at Christ Church Episcopal in Gardiner. The celebrant was the Rev. Bruce Alexander, pianist and soloist was Marcia Gallagher, time of remembrances were given by Larry Stewart, Rick Wilson, Anita Benoit, Laurie Dubois and Karol Shaw. Pallbearers were David Benoit, Jim Caston, Rod Dubois, Scott Ferguson, Bob Gurney and Bill Norwood. The committal prayers followed in the family lot at Oak Grove Cemetery in Gardiner. Arrangements were under the care of Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner.

Muriel C. Andrews

1907-2002

FARMINGDALE — Muriel (P-Nut) C. Andrews, 94, formerly of Northern Avenue in Farmingdale died Saturday, June 1, 2002, at the Augusta Rehabilitation Center.

She was born in Cambridge, Mass., Sept. 1, 1907, a daughter of George and Harriet Chase.

Muriel was employed at the Commonwealth Shoe and Leather Co. and for S.D. Warren Paper Mill, from which she retired in 1974.

She enjoyed camping, dancing and animals. Her husband of 50 years, Lee Andrews, two brothers, Ralph and Warren Chase, predeceased her.

She is survived by her daughter, Dottie Hachey and her husband, James, of Farmingdale; two grandchildren, Tammy McGonagle and husband, Peter, of Portland, Sawn Eric Hachey of Portland; great-grandson, Alexander J. McGonagle; three nieces, Leona Russell, Warene Eldridge, and Helene Snowman.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, at the family lot in Maple Grove Extension Cemetery in Randolph. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Kennebec Valley Humane Society, 16 Pet Haven Lane, Augusta ME 04330. Arrangements under the care of Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner.

Jean Elizabeth Blake Keenan

1930-2002

AUGUSTA — Jean Elizabeth Blake Keenan, 72, died Friday, May 31, 2002, at the Greybirch Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Facility in Augusta after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Hallowell, Feb. 2, 1930, the daughter of Benjamin H. and Margaret C. Blake.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert E. Keenan of Pittston in 1995, and a brother, Oliver Blake of Hallowell in 1948.

She is survived by her five daughters, Kathleen Kimball of Pittston, Lynn Rose of Pembroke, Mass., Marjorie (Bruce) Parent of Lewiston, Roberta (Robert) Chase of Whitefield, and Brenda (Terry) Drake of Minot; her eight grandchildren, Jason Kimball, Douglas Grant, Kathleen and Emily Parent, Andrew and Mackenzie Cook, Jodelle Chase, and Andrea MacAvoy; her brothers and sisters, Winthrop (Pauline) Blake of Lubec, Louise Botello of Falmouth, Mass., Herbert (Mary) Blake of Bothell, Wash., Richard Blake of Hallowell, Virginia (Richard) Choate of Farmingdale, Roger (Margaret) Blake of Farmingdale and William (Rose) Blake of Lubec.

Jean had a passion for her flower gardens. She spent endless hours planting, arranging and nurturing them. She felt great joy being surrounded by her family and friends and always enjoyed their musical talents. Traveling and shopping were also favorite pastimes.

Animals always found her to be very passionate and loving. Through the years many found a home with her.

Jean was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Gardiner and a hairdresser in the local community for many years. She will be sadly missed.

Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 3, at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Tuesday, June 4, at St. Joseph's Catholic CHurch in Gardiner.

In lieu of flowers it is suggested that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or the Kennebec Valley Humane Society or a charity of one's choice.

Beverly J. McCracken

1922-2002

FALMOUTH — Beverly J. McCracken, 79, of Falmouth, formerly of Portland and Auburn, died Friday, May 31, 2002, at her home after a long illness.

She was born Oct. 16, 1922, in Lewiston, a daughter of Harry C. and Ora (Donovan) Jordan. She attended Auburn schools and graduated from Edward Little High School, class of 1949. She attended the Maine School of Commerce in Auburn and was later employed by Central Maine General Hospital and the American Red Cross in Lewiston.

In 1948 she married Alexander McCracken of Auburn. Beverly was a homemaker and devoted to her family. She enjoyed arts and crafts, doing volunteer work, shopping, and the company of family and friends. She also enjoyed traveling, having gone to Europe twice, Bermuda, Florida, and many shorter trips.

She was formerly a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.

She is survived by her husband, Alexander of Falmouth; a son, Stephen of Falmouth; a daughter, Elizabeth Dube of Lewiston; and two grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, at Jones, Rich, & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 5, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Auburn.
