William F. Turner

1947-2002

CHELSEA — William Fennell Turner, 55, of Chelsea, beloved husband of Celeste and loving father of Ben and Adam, died unexpectedly Friday, May 31, 2002, at his home.

He was born May 25, 1947, in New York City, New York. In 1951 Bill's family moved to Togus, where his father, Dr. Fennell P. Turner, worked as the Chief of Surgery at the Veterans Administration Center for over 30 years.

Bill attended Cony High School in Augusta and Erskine Academy in South China and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. John F. Kennedy during the Vietnam era. Upon completing his tour of duty, he attended the University of Maine at Augusta, where he met his soul mate and time-traveler Celeste Rancourt. They were married in December of 1970 and Bill continued his studies and graduated from the University of Southern Maine with a degree in mathematics.

Bill worked as a marine worm digger for many years in the Wiscasset tidal region. He was a man of nature. He was a sustainable wood harvester at his Chelsea home, which he built with the help of Celeste and their sons, Benjamin of Augusta and Adam of Portland. He shared his love of the outdoors with his family, leaving them with fond memories of weekly visits to the family summer cottage on Damariscotta Lake and their annual tenting pilgrimage to Prince Edward Island.

Bill was well known for his patience, quiet strength and good nature, which earned him the nickname "Cool Breeze" at the State Bureau of Health and Vital Statistics where he worked as a computer programmer analyst for several years. Bill was also a Real Estate Broker and a member of the Kennebec Valley Board of Realtors.

He was predeceased by his mother, Vera Alice (Thompson) Turner, on Nov. 24, 1998, and his father, Dr. Fennell Parrish Turner, on April 23, 2002.

In addition to his beloved wife and loving sons, he is survived by his sister, Margaret T. Schuler and her husband, Kenneth, of Buckfield; brothers-in-law, Kenn Rancourt and wife, Jocelyne, of Auburn, and Peter Rancourt and wife, Kristan, of Hermon; sisters-in-law, Dianne Cates and husband, Gerry, of Waterville, and Sheila Bonefant and husband, Don, of Oakland; an uncle, John Pickett Turner and his wife, Jeanne, of Juno Beach, Fla., and an aunt, Sally Turner of Vero Beach, Fla.; special lifelong friends, Lew and Laura Randall of Waterboro, Peter and Debe Loughlin of Gorham, Reg and Jane Harvey of Wallingford, Conn., and several nieces, nephews, greatnieces, greatnephews, cousins, and friends.

Visiting hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, June 3, at Staples Funeral Home, Brunswick Avenue, Gardiner. A Mass of Christian Burial in celebration of Bill's life will be held at St. Joseph's Church at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 4. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Bill's memory to the Jefferson Village School Playground Fund, c/o Robert McDaniel, Jefferson Village School, 37 Washington Road, Jefferson ME 04348; or to the Chelsea Volunteer Fire Department, c/o Joseph Mills, Hallowell Road, Chelsea ME 04330; or to the charity of one's choice.

Norman J. Beaulieu

1929-2002

SIDNEY — Norman J. Beaulieu, 73, of Middle Road, died unexpectedly Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta Campus. He was born in Van Buren, May 3, 1929, a son of Joseph and Roseanna (Beaulieu) Ayotte.

Norman was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church and was an Army veteran, serving during the Korean War.

He had been employed for the State of Maine Bureau of Public Improvements for 25 years, retiring in 1991, and had previously worked at Taylor Shoe Co.

He was predeceased by a brother, Albert Ayotte. He is survived by a brother, Edward Ayotte of Van Buren; a sister, Roseanna Ayotte of Sidney; two nieces, Lisa Lajoie and Sue Cyr; a nephew, Michael Ayotte; and four grandnieces, three grandnephews and several cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at noon, Tuesday, Nov. 26, at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Northern Avenue, Augusta. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, Townsend Road, Augusta, in the spring. Ethel G. Chadwick

1912-2002

LIBERTY — Ethel G. Chadwick, 90, of Liberty, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast. She was born Nov. 24, 1912, daughter of William and Bertha (Black) Trask.

Ethel was a homemaker for many years on the family farm before becoming employed for several years by the WCCSA in Waldo County before retiring. She loved to crochet and knit. For many years she would sell her afghans, mittens and sweaters at area stores. She also braided rugs and gave lessons on how to do them. She enjoyed playing bingo and dancing. She lived life to the fullest.

She was predeceased by her husband, Melvin Chadwick, in 1977; son Douglas Chadwick in 1995; brother Lyle Trask; and a sister, Mildred Trask.

Survivors include a son, William Chadwick and his wife, Judith, of Liberty and Hobe Sound, Fla.; her longtime companion, Clifford Richards of Liberty; grandchildren Scott, Daphyne, Lori and husband Buddy, Wayne, Roxanne, Jonathan and Susanne; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, Lawry Brothers Funeral Home-Gray Chapel, Windsor Neck Road, Windsor, where a funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, with the Rev. Patrica Parker officiating. Spring burial will be held at Chadwick Hill Cemetery in South China.

L. Doris Ferguson

1912-2002

AUGUSTA — L. Doris Ferguson, 90, a resident of Monmouth, died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta, where she was a patient. She was born April 5, 1912, in Durham, the daughter of Emil and Maren (Johnson) Anderson. When she was very young, her family moved to Brunswick, where she attended school and graduated from Brunswick High School. She later attended Auburn Maine School of Commerce.

Doris married Ashley Ferguson; he died in 1987.

She was employed by the E.W. Penley Meat Packing Co. for several years and later was a secretary at the law office of Clifford & Clifford in Lewiston for several years. She went to work for the state of Maine at the Department of Human Services until she retired in 1977. She was a member of the Maine Association of Retired State Workers and the Monmouth Historical Society, and she was an honorary trustee of the Monmouth Museum.

She is survived by one daughter and her husband, Cynthia and Robert Turcotte of Litchfield; one brother and his wife, Berton and Beatrice Anderson of Gorham; one grandson, Shelby Turcotte of Litchfield; and one granddaughter, Tamaren Turcotte of Las Vegas, Nev. She was predeceased by two sisters, Olive and Evelyn Brocato; and one brother, Clifford Anderson.

A funeral will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Lewiston. Arrangements are by Bragdon-Finley Funeral Home, 707 Main St., Monmouth. If desired, contributions may be made to Augusta Humane Society, Augusta 04330.

Kevin A. McLaughlin

1963-2002

PORTLAND — Kevin A. McLaughlin, born Oct. 14, 1963, went to be with the Lord after a brief illness related to a brain tumor at his home in Portland, Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002.

He is the beloved son of Donald E. and Patricia V. McLaughlin of Gardiner and is survived by them; two brothers, Mark D. McLaughlin and his wife, Joyce, and Jonathan D. McLaughlin, both of Gardiner; four sisters, Dawn Russell and husband Jamie of LaGrange, Rebecca McLaughlin of Davie, Fla., Valerie McLaughlin of Gardiner and Heather A. Ouellette and husband Mark of Auburn; sister-in-law Sarah McLaughlin of Pittston; two aunts; friends and colleagues; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

His brother, Russell E. McLaughlin, predeceased him in 1997.

Kevin graduated from University of Maine at Farmington in 1984 with two degrees, one in special education and the other in elementary education. He also held two master's degrees, one in special education the other in administration. He ended his 17-year career in special education at Freeport Middle School on Oct. 22, 2002. He also taught eight years at Reiche School in Portland and four years at Lyman Moore Middle School in Portland. He was a dedicated teacher, always putting his students first, advocating for their needs. He was well-known for his sense of humor and special sense of caring. He was also active in the drama department as a director, building sets and working with casting, lighting and costumes. He enjoyed the theatre, collecting antiques, hiking, boating and traveling, vacationing in the White Mountains, Samoset, Florida, Prince Edward Island and Ireland.

His childhood church affiliation was Calvary Foursquare Church in Gardiner and he was most recently a member of the Park Avenue Church of God in Portland. In his short lifetime, Kevin touched many people, adults and children alike. He was greatly loved and will be sadly missed.

Visiting hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, at the Calvary Foursquare Church, Old Brunswick Road, Gardiner. A celebration of his life will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, at Calvary Foursquare Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Calvary Foursquare Church Mission Fund, Old Brunswick Road, Gardiner 04345. Arrangements are under the care of Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Avenue, Gardiner.

Maurice E. Millett Sr.

1929-2002

FARMINGDALE — Maurice E. Millett Sr., 73, of Meadowbrook Gardens in Farmingdale, died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta. He was born in Lisbon Falls, June 22, 1929, a son of Maurice Millett and Carrie (Cressey) Millett. Maurice attended Gardiner schools.

He had been employed for 33 years at the Commonwealth Shoe and Leather Co. in Gardiner and retired from the Portsmouth Naval Ship Yard in Kittery. He enjoyed his new 1986 Chevy pickup truck, crossword puzzles and socializing with his friends and family.

Three brothers, Winfield Millett Sr., George Jellison, Floyd Jellison predeceased him.

He is survived by his lifelong companion, Barbara (Rittall) Millett of Farmingdale; two daughters, Linda Williams and husband, Carroll, of Gardiner, Carolyn Millett and companion, Reginald Chabot of Whitefield; two sons, Maurice Millett Jr. and wife, Deborah of Sabattus, Timothy Millett and wife, Marcia, of Whitefield; five brothers, Kenneth Millett of Salome, Ariz. Fred Jellison of Dresden, Jessie Jellison of Windsor, Herman Jellison of Chelsea, William Jellison of Augusta; his sister, Ruby Tarbox of Richmond; three grandchildren, Andrew Williams, Amber Ware, Suzanne Burns; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25, at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner, where a funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26. Burial will follow at Cherry Hill Cemetery in West Gardiner.

Charles Robert Terrio

1932-2002

ENGLEWOOD, Fla. —Charles Robert "Bob" Terrio, 69, of Englewood, Fla., died Monday, Nov. 18, 2002. He was born in Beverly, Mass., Nov. 28, 1932.

He retired to Englewood in 1987 after 31 years with IBM and was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.

He resided on Old Kents Hill Road in Readfield, Maine, for 23 years. He summered in Wayne, Maine.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Meredith (Merrie); his father, Foster Terrio of Englewood; a daughter, Cynthia and son-in-law Ted of Fort Mill, S.C.; a son, David of New York City; a son, Todd and daughter-in-law Wanda, of Gray, Maine; and a granddaughter, Alexandra of Fort Mill, S.C.

Donations may be made to the Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Eighth Floor Oncology Unit, 1700 South Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, Fla. 34239; or to the Suncoast Humane Society, 6781 San Casa Drive, Englewood, Fla. 34224. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Union Meeting House at Readfield Corner.

Bessie E. Larrabee

1926-2003

HALLOWELL — Bessie Emogene Larrabee, 76, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Gloria Larrabee, after a yearlong battle with cancer.

She was born in Norway, July 13, 1926, the daughter of Harold and Edith (Mascal) Gregg. Bessie attended Augusta schools. She was married to Richard Larrabee Sr. for 28 years upon his death in 1971.

She was employed by Hazzard Shoe for a few years before working at Hudson Pulp & Paper and Statler Tissue, where she eventually retired after more than 40 years of service.

Bessie volunteered at Meals on Wheels for eight years. She was also a member of the Gardiner and West Gardiner Senior Citizens clubs. An avid gardener and craftsperson, she will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Bessie was predeceased by her husband, her parents and two brothers, Carrall and Richard Gregg.

She is survived by four sons, Harold Larrabee of Chelsea, Richard Larrabee Jr. and wife Doris of Augusta, Tom Larrabee and wife Gloria of Hallowell, and Don Larrabee and wife Claudette of South Gardiner; one stepdaughter, Nancy Storer of South Portland; two brothers, Howard Gregg of Augusta and Robert Gregg and wife Pat of San Antonio, Texas; two sisters, Hazel Austin and husband Vernon of Southington, Conn., and Marion Thompson and husband Ernie of Farmingdale; and nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 68 Second St., Hallowell, where a celebration of Bessie's life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, with Daniel Campbell, minister of the Church of Christ, officiating. Beatrice R. Meserve

1916-2003

DRESDEN — Beatrice R. Meserve, 86, of Gardiner Road, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Glenridge in Augusta after a long illness. She was born Feb. 5, 1916, the daughter of Maurice A. and Grace L. (Morse) Witham. Beatrice was a graduate of Bridge Academy in Dresden, class of 1934, and worked at Eaton Shoe Co. in Richmond.

She was married for many years to Vernon E. Meserve of Dresden.

Beatrice was a past member of the Dresden Historical Society. She enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, fishing, hunting, sewing, her children and three-wheeling.

She was predeceased by a son, Hildreth I. Meserve, who died in 1946. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Kermit Trussell of Pittston; two daughters, Norma "Tootie" Blodgett of Pittston and Sally Tribbet of Richmond; and seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

At her request, there will be no public visiting hours. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, at Amesbury, White & Harmon Funeral Home, 39 Washington Ave., Gardiner, with the Rev. Margaret Queior of the Dresden Richmond United Methodist Church officiating. Spring burial will be at Pine Grove Cemetery in Dresden. Alice B. Reynolds

1908-2003

SIDNEY — Mrs. Alice B. Reynolds, 94, passed away Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at the home of her daughter Dr. Beatrice K. Reynolds of Sidney.

She was born in Kankakee, Ill., on Nov. 9, 1908, the daughter of Charles H. and Sophia (Schultz) Mulholland and granddaughter of German-Jewish immigrants Johann and Carolyn (Schumaker) Schultz of Schwerin, Mecklenburg, Germany. The Schultz couple migrated to Chicago, Ill., in 1868, where they lived for six years, among other German immigrants from Mecklenburg and Prussia. Then they moved to Chabanse, south of Chicago, where they purchased a farm in Milks Grove Township area and attended the German Lutheran church there. Caroline (Schumaker) Schultz's brother John Schumaker settled in Kankakee, while her brother Theodore Schumaker settled in Morris, Minn.; her half-sister, Mrs. Neuberg settled in Clifton, Ill. Alice is also the granddaughter of Irish Catholic immigrants Charles and Mary (O'Donnelly) Mulholland, who migrated to Kankakee from Dundalk, Ireland. Her father, Charles Mulholland, was one of the founders of St. Patrick Catholic Church, the first Irish Catholic Church in Kankakee.

Alice was christened at age 5 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Kankakee. She graduated from Kankakee High School and attended Northern Illinois State Teacher's College at DeKalb, Farmington State Teachers College and Gorham State Teachers College in Maine.

She and Walter W. Reynolds were married in Chicago, Ill. They lived in Peoria, Ill., before moving to Sidney in 1942, when they bought the farm of Walter's great-grandparents Thomas and Susanna (Battles) Reynolds. Alice taught elementary school in Illinois and in Sidney until the death of her husband in 1965. She attended Second Baptist Church in Sidney and was a member of the Ladies Aid.

Alice was predeceased by her parents and her brothers, Charles J. Mulholland and Raymond J.P. Mulholland Sr., and sisters Carolyn Mulholland, Marcella Sullivan, Mildred Mulholland, Florence Williams, Leona Healy, Margareta Petersen, all of Illinois. Her husband, Walter W. Reynolds, son of William L. and Sarah P. (Hastings) Reynolds of Sidney, died at Portland on Jan. 10, 1965.

She is survived by her daughters, Dr. Beatrice K. Reynolds of Sidney and Mrs. Alicia A. Combes of Littleton, Colo.; her grandchildren, Brian H. Combes, Wesley G. Combes and Martha M. Fisher, all of Littleton; and great-grandson Cordell Combes. She is also survived by her nephews, Richard K. Petersen of Albuquerque, N.M., Raymond Mulholland Jr. of Kankakee, Calvin Peterson of St. Petersburg, Fla., and several great-grand-nephews and grandnieces in Illinois, Florida, New Mexico, California, Washington and Arizona.

A graveside service will be held in the spring at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the care of Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.
