Robert O. St. Michel

1931-2003

HARRISON — Robert O. St. Michel Sr., 71, formerly of Harrison, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at the Russell Park and Rehabilitation Living Center in Lewiston. He was born in Augusta, July 2, 1931, a son of Theodore and Marguerite (Greenleaf) St. Michel.

His wife, Iris B. St. Michel; his father, Theodore St. Michel; and a sister, Rita Lyman, predeceased him.

He graduated from Cony High School of Augusta in 1951 and attended Bentley School of Accounting in Boston. He was a Korean War veteran, having served in the Air Force from 1952 to 1956. He was a member of the Tribal Council in Orono; past president of Norway/Paris Lions Club; Knights of Columbus charter member, Council 5315; past Grand Knight Fourth Degree, Oxford Hills; past president, Rotary Club in Rumford; member of the Elks Club and the Eagles Club of Norway; life member of the American Legion of Norway; and life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of South Paris.

He was past chairman for Manpower Planning and Training, state of Maine; and past chairman for Private Industry Council of New England of Boston. He served on several boards and committees for three governors: Edward Muskie, Joseph Brennan and Kenneth Curtis.

He received the Presidential Citation from President Ronald Reagan and a Presidential Citation with commendation from President Jimmy Carter for working with the elderly program for the state of Maine. He owned and operated a housing complex for the elderly in Bridgton, South Paris Tire Co. for 20 years, a printing company in Rumford, Jamies Restaurant in Norway, a manufacturing business in Presque Isle, and a car dealership in South Paris.

Survivors include a son, Robert O. St. Michel Jr.; two daughters, Laurie Newhall of Harrison and Helen Robillard of South Paris; two stepchildren, Gail Trenberth of Boulder, Colo., and Mildred "Billie" Dube of Andover, N.H.; his mother, Marguerite St. Michel of Gardiner; his brother, Donald St. Michel of Topsham; three sisters, Marguerite Lambert of Augusta, Nancy Clary of Gardiner and Linda Kelly of San Antonio, Texas; and five grandchildren, a great-grandchild, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He enjoyed fishing and skiing with lifelong family friend, the Rev. Gilbert Patenaude. There will be no visiting hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, at St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Augusta. Spring burial will be at Holy Family Cemetery in Augusta. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Augustine's Restoration Fund, 1 Kendall St., Augusta 04330. Arrangements are under the care of Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner.

Florencio DelaTorre Maque

1930-2003

Fairfield — Florencio DelaTorre Maque, 67, of Fairfield and formerly of the Philippines, died unexpectedly Saturday, April 5, 2003, at his daughter's home in Fairfield.

He was born in Guihulngan Negros, Philippines, Aug. 11, 1930, the son of Jimenes Maque and Maria (DelaTorre) Maque. In September 1967, he married Estelita Nadela Bacalso.

He has lived the last three years in Maine with his daughter, Maricor, son-in-law Joseph Turner, and his three grandchildren, Maria, Joseph F. and Michael Turner of Fairfield. He is also leaves five children in the Philippines, Marivic Jomao-as, Jonathan Maque, Voltaire Maque, Mechard Maque, and Lala Marie Marque; many grandchildren, brothers and sisters; and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He will be cremated at Gracelawn Memorial Park in Auburn and taken back to the Philippines in the summer. Arrangements are by Lawry Brothers Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Herman Eddy Thayer

2003

RANDOLPH — Herman Eddy Thayer, 75, of Jones Street died Friday, April 4, 2003, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland. He was born in Randolph, a son of Charles Thayer and Irene Marshall.

Herman was an Army veteran of World War II. He had been employed for 25 years as a medical technician at the Veterans Affairs medical center at Togus, for 23 years at the Wise Trading Co. in Augusta, and most recently at the Senator Inn in Augusta.

He was a licensed pilot and enjoyed flying. He was a tinker and a very compassionate man. He called upon many people to make sure everything was all right. He was an avid pool player.

A son, David Thayer of Ohio; a sister, Rita Leathers; and a brother, Duane Marshall, predeceased him. He is survived by 11 children, Richard Thayer of Hallowell, Peter Thayer of Hallowell, James Thayer of Waterville, Margo Donacker of Augusta, Suzin McCausland of Hallowell, Lynn Palmer of Litchfield, Roberta McRae of Texas, Kendra Danforth of Gardiner, Thomas Thayer of Pittston, Trudy Thayer of Augusta, and Tina Turcotte of Pittston; two sisters, Patricia LaPointe of Chelsea and Carolyn Bailey of Wiscasset, and three brothers, Linwood Thayer of Pittston, Kenneth Thayer of North Whitefield and Hallis Thayer of North Whitefield; 24 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday, April 10, at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner. At his request, there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, New England Division Inc., 1 Main St. Suite 300, Topsham 04086.

Helen Voter Jones

1918-2003

WINTHROP — Helen Voter Jones, 84, of Upper Narrows Lane died Saturday evening, May 31, 2003, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta Campus, following a long illness.

She was born in Phillips on Nov. 19, 1918, the daughter of Percy A. and Fannie M. (Marden) Voter. Helen was educated in Phillips schools, graduating from Phillips High School in 1936. She married Winfield G. Jones on Nov. 5, 1938, in Phillips. She was a member of the Mexico Baptist Church.

Helen was predeceased by her husband, Winfield; her two brothers, Stanley and Russell Voter, both of Mexico; and a daughter-in-law, Okson Jones, of Winslow.

She is survived by a daughter, Janice, and her husband, Robert Hall, of Standish; a son, Raymond Jones, of Winslow; and a daughter, Linda and her husband, Ronald Burke, of Winthrop. She is also survived by two very special granddaughters, Brenda Hall and her husband, Bret Overturf, of Corinth, and Andrea and her husband, Michael DeSimone, of Waterboro; three great-grandchildren, Kaj, Tuuli and Maija Overturf, all of Corinth; a sister-in-law, Ruth Voter, of Mexico; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, personal care assistant Joyce Waning, of Winthrop.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit 12:30-2 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, where a 2 p.m. funeral service will follow the visitation. Burial will take place in Farrington Morton Cemetery, U.S. Route 2 (River Road), Mexico, immediately following the service.

Veneita Huston Learnard

1922-2003

AUBURN — Veneita H. Learnard, 81, a longtime resident of Norris Hill, Monmouth, died Saturday, May 31, 2003, at the IOOF Nursing Home in Auburn, where she was a resident for seven years.

She was born March 18, 1922, in Saugus, Mass., the daughter of Homer W. and Mabel G. Sears Houston. Veneita was a graduate of Edward Little High School in 1940 and went to Westbrook Vocational School (machinist), phlebotomy training at Central Maine General and St. Mary's hospitals.

She married Clayton E. Learnard on June 28, 1941, in Auburn, and for many years they made their home at Norris Hill Road, Monmouth. Clayton died Nov. 7, 1987. Recently, Veneita had resided at the IOOF Home, Fairview Avenue, Auburn.

Veneita worked as a machinist during World War II, at the Saco-Lowell Machine Co. in Biddeford. She also worked for Chick Orchards of Monmouth, and was a part-time assistant administrator at the IOOF Home in Auburn. She retired in 1986 as a secretary from Rural Community Action Ministry in Leeds. She taught traditional rug hooking in adult education in Lewiston, Leeds and Winthrop for many years. She also was the owner and operator of Granny's Apple Pie Bakery and was noted for cake decorating in Monmouth. Veneita enjoyed family history, working with art in water and oil colors. She was known for her beautiful handhooked rugs and playing the piano and guitar. She was active in civil defense as a radio operator and taught ham radio.

She was past matron of the Androscoggin Chapter and 50-year member of Order of the Eastern Star chapter 165; past master and 50-year member of Eureka Grange 7; past matron of Eureka Juvenile Grange in Durham; member of the State and National Grange; active member of the 4-H club; past officer of Androscoggin Mayberry American Legion Auxiliary; member of Fidelity Rebekah Lodge 4 of Auburn; member of the Republican town committees of Durham and Monmouth; past president of Monmouth Fireman Auxiliary; past officer of Clan Campbell, Order of Scottish Clans; president of Monmouth Gavel Club; matron of Order of the Eastern Star; on the board of directors of D.F.D. Medical Center of Leeds; served on the board of directors of the Rural Community Action Ministry council of Leeds; member and deacon of Leeds Presbyterian Church and secretary of the Woman's Association of the Church; and co-coordinator of the Salvation Army for the towns of Monmouth and Litchfield. She served three years on the Durham school board, was instrumental in the building of Durham Elementary School and served on the Monmouth Recreation Committee.

She is survived by two daughters, Lt. Colonel Gloria Hall, R.N. (U.S. Army retired), of Buckfield and Sue-Ellen M. O'Connor of Monmouth; two brothers, Homer W. Houston Jr. of Poland and John S. Houston of Pejepscot; four grandsons, Jason D. Hall, Russell C. Gaghan, Jonathan D. Hall and Erik J. Gaghan; one granddaughter, Tasha S. O'Connor; two great-grandsons, Bryan J. Gaghan and Cameron J. Gaghan; and one great-granddaughter, Brooklynn N. Gaghan.

She was predeceased by a brother, Stanley E. Houston.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 3, at Bragdon-Finley Funeral Home, 707 Main St., Monmouth. Interment is at Gracelawn Memorial Park, Auburn. Visiting hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Monday, June 2, at the funeral home.

Cecilia Taylor

1960-2003

NORTH WHITEFIELD —Cecilia Taylor, 42, of Gardiner Road, died May 30, 2003, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta after a brief illness.

She was born in Augusta on June 10, 1960. Cecilia was employed by Joseph Kirschner Co. for 18 years. She was chief steward for the United Food Workers Union. She was also active in the United Way campaigns.

Cecilia was preceded in death by a brother, Roland Sirois; and a sister, Geneva Skyraven.

Surviving is her husband, Phillip R. Taylor of North Whitefield; a stepson, Phillip R.S. Taylor and his wife Jennifer of Ohio; a stepdaughter, Christina L. Sanbornand her husband, Stephen, of North Whitefield; four brothers, Norman Sirois of Lebanon, Maurice Sirois of Chelsea, Raymond Sirois of Kentucky and Peter Sirois of Augusta; five sisters, Joanne Dechaine of Grand Isle, Reina Dennis of West Gardiner, Therese Peaslee of Rockland, Elizabeth Cody of Florida and Bernadette Sirois of Corinna; three grandchildren, Tyler Crumley of North Whitefield and Emmitt Taylor and Lauren Taylor, both of Ohio; many nieces and nephews; two special cousins, Paul and Irmy Sirois of Lewiston; and her mother-in-law, Bertha T. Taylor of Gardiner.

Cecilia was a person who had a tremendous love for animals of all kinds. Her "family" also included eight loving dogs, six loving cats and two 1,100-pound pigs.

Visiting hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. Memorial contributions may be made to Kennebec Valley Humane Society, Pet Haven Lane, Augusta 04330.

Anne L. Cunningham

1930-2003

RICHMOND — Anne L. Cunningham, 72, of Main Street passed away unexpectedly Saturday, July 26, 2003, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta.

She was born in Richmond on Nov. 2, 1930, the daughter of Harold and Anna (Whitney) Mealey.

Anne attended Richmond Schools, class of 1948. She later married her beloved husband, Ernest, in Richmond in 1951.

During the 1950s, Anne worked as a Richmond telephone operator until the company relocated. She also worked for more than 15 years as a secretary for the former Jones Insurance Agency of Richmond and in the family business, Cunningham's Market, in Richmond until her retirement in 1986.

She was a member of Dresden Richmond Methodist Church, a 44-year member of the Eastern Star Electa Chapter 2 of Bowdoinham, a 29-year life member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Richmond, a past member of the Richmond Booster Club, and a member of the Methodist Women's Society and the Richmond PTA.

Anne was predeceased by her parents, brother Earle Mealey and sisters Marguerite Stockton, Eleanor Spera and Priscilla Slack.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 52 years, Ernest Cunningham of Richmond; daughters Pamela Huntington and her husband, Bruce, of Richmond, Sue Dionne and her husband, Peter, of Farmingdale, and Patricia Pierce and her husband, Andrew, of Bowdoin; grandchildren Ryan Huntington and his wife, Amanda, of Nebraska, Eric Huntington of Richmond, Caitlin Dionne of Farmingdale, Chelsey Dionne of Farmingdale, Meghan Pierce of Bowdoin and Matthew Pierce of Bowdoin; brother-in-law Bill Slack of North Carolina; two aunts; and several close nieces, nephews and cousins.

Anne will be remembered as a devoted and kind person to her family, friends and community.

Family and friends may visit 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, at Kincer Funeral Home, with services being performed by the Women's Auxiliary and Eastern Star at 6 p.m. A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 30, at Dresden Richmond Methodist Church, Richmond, with Pastor Margaret Queior officiating. Burial will follow in Richmond Cemetery, Richmond. Following the service, a gathering will take place at the Richmond American Legion on Carding Machine Road, Richmond.

In Anne's memory, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society Breast Cancer Research, 1 Main St., Topsham 04086.

Arrangements are under the care of Kincer Funeral Home, Richmond.

Bruce J. Duval Jr.

1961-2003

NORTH MONMOUTH —Bruce J. Duval Jr., 42, a resident of Annabessacook Road, died early Sunday morning, July 27, 2003, at the home of a friend, from a self-inflicted wound.

He was born in Lewiston on July 13, 1961, the son of Bruce J. and Corrine Rowbotham Duval Sr.

Bruce attended Edward Little High School and was a graduate of Dover-Foxcroft Academy. Bruce made his home with his mother on Annabessacook Road. He worked as a truck driver for Gamache Trucking of North Monmouth.

Bruce enjoyed woodworking and was a pack rat.

He is survived by his mother of North Monmouth; one uncle, Thomas Green of Maryland; one aunt, Brenda Greenleaf and her husband, Reginald, of Buckfield; one nephew, Craig Lovejoy; and one cousin, Cory Bakalyar of Lewiston.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 30, at the Valley Cemetery, Greene. Arrangements by Bragdon-Finley Funeral Home, 707 Main St., Monmouth.

Richard Harvell

1916-2003

HALLOWELL — Richard Harvell, 86, died peacefully at the hospital in Ellsworth on July 24, 2003, after a sudden illness.

He was born on Oct. 7, 1916, in Fitchburg, Mass., and was the son of John and Flora (Gilley) Harvell. Richard grew up in Waban, Mass., and spent many summers at the ancestral home in Robbinston.

He graduated from the College of William and Mary in Virginia and married his college sweetheart, Jean Pollard. He served as an officer in the Navy in both World War II and the Korean War, retiring as a captain in the Naval Reserve. He and Jean made their home for many years in Goffstown, N.H., and Dick owned a home improvement business in Manchester, N.H., and Bedford, N.H.

Their retirement years were enjoyed in Naples, Fla., for 23 winters, traveling to Steuben each summer. In 2001, Dick and Jean moved to Granite Hill Estates in Hallowell, but continued to enjoy their well-loved cottage on the coast each summer.

Dick enjoyed fishing, designing and tying his own trout and salmon flies, hunting, tennis, and televised sports of all kinds. He painted many landscape scenes, designed and built his summer home, researched family history, and enjoyed reading biographies and histories. He took a great interest in studying and photographing the natural world.

Richard is survived by Jean, his devoted wife of almost 63 years; by his daughter, Linda Harvell of Hallowell; daughter and son-in-law Judith and Peter Andersen of Connecticut; and his grandchildren, Eric Andersen and Kristen Andersen. Survivors also include his brother Phillip Harvell and his sister Ellen Livingston.

He was predeceased by his brother John Harvell and his sister Anne Lotz. His family is proud of him, his many accomplishments and long active life, and they have all learned much from him.

There will be no calling hours. Memorial services will be private. Following his wishes, his ashes will be scattered at sea.
