Marie E. Seney

OAKLAND — Marie Elizabeth Seney, 83, of Oakland, died suddenly and peacefully Sunday, June 4, 2000.

She was born Jan. 22, 1917, in Waterville, daughter of Otto C. and Florence O. (Brewer) Knauff.

She graduated from Williams High School, in Oakland, class of 1936.

For most of her married life, Marie was a babysitter for several professional families from Maine to the Carolinas. She maintained a lifelong correspondence and visitations with some of these families.

For several years she lived in Newport, where she regularly attended Peoples Methodist Church, and was past president of Women's Society for Christian Service. Since moving back to Oakland, she had been an active member of Oakland-Sidney United Methodist Church.

Marie was very active at Muskie Center, in Waterville. Since 1982, she had devoted more than 20,000 volunteer hours to the Day Care Program, ran beano games held twice a week, and helped to put up 120 Meals on Wheels every day. The word for help at Muskie Center was Marie, who was named Volunteer of the Year.She also visited about 40 patients in local nursing homes every month.

While at home, she enjoyed feeding and watching the birds.

She received several awards, including a special citation from American Association of Retired Persons for distinguished service, Saunders L. Patterson Outstanding Volunteer Award, in 1993-1994, and Department of Human Service nominee for Exemplary Older Person Award for 1999. The town of Oakland honored Marie and her husband, Theodore Seney Sr., for volunteer service by dedication of the annual town report in 1993.

Besides her parents, Marie was predeceased by a sister, Ada C. Knauff, who died in 1995.

Survivors include her husband, Theodore P. Seney Sr., whom she married in 1942; son, Theodore P. Seney Jr., and his wife, Caroline, of Vassalboro; brother, Robert W. Knauff, of Oakland; grandson, Matthew K. Seney, of Newton, Mass.; nephew, Thomas Knauff, of Oakland; and niece, Janet Knauff, of Rockland.

Friends are invited to visit from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, at Wheeler Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Oakland.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, at Oakland-Sidney United Methodist Church, Fairfield Street, Oakland. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Grove Street, Waterville.

Those who wish may make memorial donations to Humane Society of the Waterville Area, 120 Drummond Ave., Waterville 04901.

Gloria L. Norton

RANDOLPH — Gloria Lorraine Norton, 62, widow of Harold L. Norton Jr., died Sunday, June 4, 2000, at her residence.

She was born Dec. 9, 1937, in Damariscotta, the daughter of Raymond E. and Eleanor E. (Marshall) Black.

Gloria was a homemaker most of her life, raising eight children.

Her greatest joy, in recent years, was watching her grandchildren grow. They were her life.

Babies and children always made her smile, as well as a well-sung gospel tune. Another of her great joys was going to meetings at Fellowship Baptist Church. She considered the people there, and Pastor Williams, her second family, and loved them all dearly.

Gloria was a classic lady in every sense of the word, with an alert mind, willing hands, and a desire to be active in her world.

She was devoted to her family and was always there for anyone in need. She always maintained a positive outlook on life and always had a good word for everybody. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

She was predeceased by her parents, husband, Harold L. Norton Jr., and brothers, Edward and Andrew Black.

Mrs. Norton is survived by five daughters, Gloria Monteiro, of New Bedford, Mass., Dawn Magee, and companion, Maynard Wing, of Skowhegan, Carol Perkins, and her husband, Matt, of Randolph, Susan Furlong, and her husband, James, of East Winthrop, and Dianna Lerette, and her husband, Bob, of Randolph; three sons, Harold L Norton III, and his wife, Jeannie, of Pittston, Raymond Norton, and his wife Tracy, and Michael Norton, and his companion, Tonya, of Augusta; grandchildren, Wayne Macumber and Kimberly Ryan, of New Bedford, Mass., Cathy Perkins, of Randolph, Matt Perkins Jr., of Berlin, N.H., James Furlong II, of Plant City, Fla., Jeromiah Norton, of Gardiner, Joseph Magee, of Skowhegan, Jennifer Norton, of Bangor, Jessica and Joshua Norton, of Pittston, Tommy White, of Randolph, Alex, Adam and Carrie Norton, and Kevin, Justin and Tasha Swift, of Randolph, Brittany Barrows, of Randolph, Jody Norton, of Nebraska, Theresa Wright, of Augusta, and Michael Norton Jr. and Christopher Norton, both of Augusta; one brother Richard Black, of Damariscotta, two sisters, Judy Morse, of Chula Vista, Calif., and Priscilla Sumabat, of Whitefield; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 7, with Rev. Don Williams officiating. Burial will be later, at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta.

Nancy F. Sprowl

DANVERS, Mass. — Ms. Nancy Faye Sprowl, 52, of 11 Bayberry Road, Danvers, a vice president of banking, died Wednesday evening, May 31, 2000, at her home, surrounded by her devoted family, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Belfast, Maine, and raised in Searsmont, Maine, she was the daughter, of Leander M. and Florence (Sibley) Sprowl, of Searsmont. She received her education in Searsmont and Belfast school systems.

She earned her degree from University of Maine.

Sprowl was employed as vice president of First National Bank of Ipswich and previously had been employed in Boston area banks.

An accomplished seamstress and quilter, she had donated many beautiful hand made items to her favorite animal shelters for fund raising. She was devoted to the rescue of stray and unwanted cats and dogs. Nancy was a volunteer for Strays in Need, in Danvers, and Dog Orphans, in Douglas.

She was a member of Unitarian Universalist Church, in Danvers.

Ms. Sprowl was a sister of the late Virginia Andrews, of Searsport.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by one daughter, Sarah G. Stetson, of Danvers; twin sons, Leander Stetson and William W. Stetson Jr., both of Danvers; two brothers, David Sprowl and George Sprowl Sr., both of Searsmont; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 10, at Unitarian Universalist Church, Locust Street, Danvers. A committal service will be held at a later date, in Searsmont.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to North Shore Feline Rescue, P.O. Box 1263, Middleton 01949, or Stanley O. Travis Fund, Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine, 200 Westboro Road, North Grafton 01536.

Arrangements are by Peterson-O'Donnell Funeral Home, 167 Maple St., Route 62, Danvers.

Geneva S. Raven

BELGRADE — Geneva Sky Raven, 46, of West Road, died Monday, June 5, 2000, at home, after a long illness, with her family at her side.

She was born in Brunswick, on Nov. 29, 1953, the daughter of Joseph P. and Merie L. Goupil Sirois.

Geneva was educated in Augusta schools.

She owned and operated her own business, MZ Fix It, in Belgrade. She also had been employed for NRF Distributors, in Augusta, for 11 years.

Geneva was a Eucharistic minister, and a very active member of St. Joseph's Parish, in Gardiner.

She was a member of Rosary Makers, of Augusta.

Geneva accepted everyone the way they were. She loved simplicity, farming, gardening, and her American Indian heritage. She was very creative and independent. She loved God, and could see him in everything she accomplished.

She was predeceased by her father, her brother, Roland, and sister, Blanche.

She is survived by her mother, of Chelsea; her son, Angelo Rado, and his wife, Julie, of Lisbon; four brothers, Norman Sirois, of East Lebanon, Maurice Sirois, of Chelsea, Raymond Sirois, of Fort Campbell, Ky., and Peter Sirois, of Augusta; six sisters, Joanne Deschaine, of Madawaska, Reina Denis, of West Gardiner, Therese Peaslee, of Pittston, Elizabeth Cody, of Gainesville, Fla., Cecilia Taylor, of Whitefield, and Bernadette Sirois, of Old Town; one grandson, Nicholas Collins; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 7, at St. Joseph's Church, in Gardiner. Burial will follow, in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Marguerite W. Rideout

DAMARISCOTTA — Marguerite W. Rideout, 72, died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at her Schooner Cove home, following a brief illness.

Born Oct. 6, 1927, in Chattanooga, Tenn., she was a daughter of Burleigh R. and Mabel O. (Thompson) Waterman.

Moving to Maine as a young woman, she attended University of Maine.

In 1948 she married Raymond A. Rideout Jr. The couple resided, for many years, in Hallowell, where she was active in the care of her four children.

Following retirement, the couple came to Damariscotta in the early 1980s.

Her husband, Raymond, and three children, Karen, Anne, and David predeceased Marguerite.

She leaves her remaining son, James Rideout, of Fall River, Mass.; one brother, Charles A. Waterman, of Boothbay Harbor; and her granddaughter, Michele Landry, of Windham. She also leaves two nieces, Laura Smith and Jean Smith; as well as two nephews, David Smith and Andrew Smith.

Marguerite will be laid to rest, with private services, at Pine Knoll Cemetery, Newcastle.

Arrangements are under the care of Strong Funeral Home, Damariscotta.

Okson O. Jones

WINSLOW — Okson O. Jones, 59, of Winslow, died Monday, June 5, 2000, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Thayer Unit, Waterville.

She was born Oct. 26, 1940, in Wonsan, North Korea, daughter of Chong and Chom Pun (Kim) Om. She married Raymond P. Jones in January of 1970, in Seoul, South Korea.

Survivors include her husband, of Winslow; son, Bill Jones, of New York, N.Y.,; sister, Ok Ja Om, of Chorwon, South Korea; and several cousins.

Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, at Redington Funeral Home, 5 Park St., Waterville, where a funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 7. Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 9, at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Old Belgrade Road, Augusta.

Louise W. Patterson

GARDINER — Louise Ware Patterson, 87, widow of Saunders L. Patterson, and last surviving child of Susan and Melvin Ware, of Gardiner, departed this life Sunday, July 2, 2000, at Augusta Rehabilitation Center.

Born in Gardiner, June 20, 1913, she attended Gardiner schools, and graduated from Hallowell High School in 1931.

She was employed, for 15 years, at radio station WFAU, as commercial continuity director, and where several of her plays were produced. She retired from the office of secretary of state, following several years in state service.

Mrs. Patterson was a member of Penney Memorial United Baptist Church, most of her life, where she was active in many capacities.

A freelance writer, she was correspondent for several newspapers, and her articles, poems, and fiction appeared in many periodicals. Her published letter to Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy, upon the death of her husband, the president, is on display at Kennedy Library Museum.

At 80 years of age, she wrote a history of Gardiner, "Vignettes of Gardiner."

As a soloist, she sang in nursing home facilities and was a member of Interfaith Singers. For 20 years she was a singing partner with Jim Shaw, and billed as the "Old Folks."

She volunteered, for many years, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, where the pediatrics ward play area was dedicated to Mr. and Mrs. Patterson. The two originated the annual variety show for the center.

Mrs. Patterson was predeceased by three brothers, Clifford, Ray, and Robert, and a sister, Evelyn Small.

Three children born to the union, of 52 years, survive her; David Saunders, of Farmingdale, and his wife, Nancy, Richard Loren, of Chelsea, and his wife, Betty, and Lynda MacFarland, and her husband, Michael, of Chelsea.

She also is survived by a sister-in-law, Laddie Patterson; and nieces and nephews. Eighteen grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren also survive.

A memorial service will be held at Penney Memorial United Baptist Church, 35 Grove St., Augusta, at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 13, with Rev. Dr. S. Robert Beaumont officiating.

Contributions of loving sympathy may be made to the pediatrics ward at MaineGeneral Medical Center, or to Penney Memorial United Baptist Church.

Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta, is assisting with arrangements.
