Avis Irene Dunn Butman

READFIELD — Avis Irene Butman, 70, of Readfield, passed away with her family by her side Oct. 12, 2001, after a courageous struggle against heart disease. She never lost her sense of humor, even at the end.

She was born in Mount Vernon, Aug. 26, 1931, the daughter of Merton Christopher and Molly (Kendall) Dunn, and attended Dunn's Corner schools and Monmouth Academy.

Avis married Warren Owen "Dick" Butman in 1951, and they raised their five children in Readfield. She worked at the Carleton Woolen Mill in Winthrop for 26 years, where she made many long-term friends. Upon the closure and appreciation day for Carleton Woolen this past spring, Avis wrote a poem about the mill that received a standing ovation from the full-capacity crowd.

Many over the years knew Avis' love of music and poetry. Writing verse was a passion and experience that fulfilled her life in many ways. She was often inspired by something her grandchildren said or did, by memories of her youth and by close friends. You would often find her sitting at the end of her kitchen table by the window, writing down her thoughts. Her poems appeared in various local publications, and in 1996, the Readfield Elementary first- and second-grade classes presented her with an illustrated version of her poem, "The Itty Bitty Bug."

Avis was never happier than when her family was visiting, which was often, as she was such a fun person to be around! All who met her will remember her wonderful sense of humor. Avis was the daughter who packed up the kids and ran home to her parents when a particularly bad lightning storm was under way; she was the sister who kept up with all her brothers in any dare they gave her, and who scared her sisters with stories after they went to bed at night; she was the classmate who was described as a better ballplayer than many of the boys; and she was the aunt who climbed higher than anyone in the oak tree upon the hill beside the home where she was born and raised. She was the Grammy that would come racing around the yard, driving the John Deere tractor and pulling a cart while shouting, "Who wants a ride?" to her grandchildren and their friends. She was the mother who always found room at the table on Thanksgiving for friends of her children and made them part of her family from then on, and she was the wife who traveled throughout the country and Costa Rica with her husband and who helped make the farm they lived on so beautiful. She was the friend who always had a pot of fresh coffee and time to visit; and she was the lady who people would see and wave to in the early dawn as she fished by the bridge in her hometown.

Avis was predeceased this past July by her husband of 50 years.

She is survived by two daughters, Linda Butman Kinney and her husband, Don, of Monmouth, and Crystal Butman Bond and her husband, Dan, of Gardiner; three sons, Donald Warren Butman and his wife, Susan, of Littleton, Colo., William Owen Butman, of Scarborough, and Thomas James Butman and his wife, Mary, of Readfield; seven grandchildren, Evan and Kyle Butman, Justin, Jared and Christopher Bond, Jonathan Butman and Jenika Kelley; two step-grandchildren, Stephanie and Collin Sweatt; two brothers, Richard K. Dunn, of Mount Vernon, and Ronald F. Dunn, of Gardiner; three sisters, Mrs. Otis (Evelyn) Spillman, of Waterville, Mrs. Richard (Rachel) Lint, of Mount Vernon, and Mrs. Richard (Lorraine) Galouch, of Readfield; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and special family friends Bob Rooney, of Readfield, and Glen Cole, of Mount Vernon.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Kenneth J. Dunn and Harold "Bus" L. Dunn, both of Winthrop, and Clifton E. Dunn, of Mount Vernon; and one sister, Mary Helen Cunningham, of Mount Vernon.

According to her wishes, there will be a graveside service for family and friends, which will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at Readfield Corner Cemetery. Immediately following, everyone is invited back to the Butman home on Route 17 for a celebration of her life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Dunn's Corner Baptist Church, Attn: The Rev. John Dunn, Mount Vernon 04352.
