J. Margaret Walker

1946-2003

THOMASTON — J. Margaret Walker, 56, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 22, 2003.

She was born in Rhode Island on Dec. 13, 1946, a daughter of Mary F. Amaru and Capt. Donald P. Walker.

After moving around the country with her Navy family, she graduated from East Greenwich High School in Rhode Island.

She was employed in the hardware department at Home Depot in Augusta.

She loved gardening and sailing, but her favorite moments in life were those spent with her family and friends.

She will be missed by all who knew her, including her animals, Benjamin, Midnight and Joshua. She will be remembered by those who knew her for her love of life, contagious smile and carefree spirit.

She was predeceased by her father, Capt. Donald P. Walker.

She is survived by her mother, Mary F. Amaru; son John Walker and fiancee Tiffany Reeves of Thomaston; daughter Kyra Gamage and her husband, Michael Gamage, of Gray; sister Mardon Walker and her husband, Laurence Belosevic, of Baltimore, Md.; her beloved granddaughter, Anna Walker and her mother, Kristin Walker. She is also survived by Daniel McCarthy, Martha Mecklen, Darlene Bonneface and her other close friends.

A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Any correspondence can be sent to her son, John Walker, P.O. Box 375, Camden 04843.

Arrangements are under the direction of Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, Gray Chapel, Windsor Neck Road, Windsor.

Lester K. Mason Sr.

1921-2003

PAISLEY, Fla. — Lester K. Mason Sr., 82, died Feb. 11, 2003, at Deland Hospital in Florida.

He was born Aug. 4, 1921, in Winthrop. Lester attended Winthrop High School.

Mr. Mason married Rose May White of Augusta on July 22, 1939. He served in the Army during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946.

After the war, Lester went to work for the Augusta Public Works Department until 1969, when he opened Mason's Lawnmower and Power Equipment Service.

Lester sold the business and retired to his camp on the shores of Androscoggin Lake in Wayne. He resided there until 1999, when he moved to Florida.

Mr. Mason raced hydroplane boats throughout New England, and as he became older, he became the announcer for the races. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed many years of bowling on various leagues.

Lester is survived by his wife, Rose; two sons, Lester Mason Jr. of Plant City, Fla., and Larry Mason of Augusta; two daughters, Rose Dearborn and Barbara Bolduc, both of Chelsea; and a niece, 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 1, at the new Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1 Main St., Suite 300, Topsham 04086.

Russell E. McPherson

1929-2003

BOWDOINHAM — Russell E. McPherson, 74, of Preble Road passed away at his home after a long battle with cancer, on July 28, 2003.

He was born in Mapleton on April 16, 1929, the son of Harold and Hazel (Archer) McPherson.

Russell was a salesman for the Bill Dodge Automobile Co. of Brunswick for more than 30 years.

Russell was a member of the Masonic Village Lodge 26 of Bowdoinham for more than 35 years and a member of the Eastern Star for more than 30 years.

Russell enjoyed his grandchildren and camping.

Russell is survived by his beloved wife, Norma McPherson of Bowdoinham; son James McPherson of Bowdoinham; daughters Deborah DeHahn of Bowdoinham and Susan Toth of Bowdoinham; a brother, Arnold McPherson of Bowdoinham; and a sister, Kathleen Estabrook of Brunswick; six granddaughters; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 31, at the Church of the Nazarene on Main Street in Bowdoinham, with the Rev. Dan Joyce officiating.

In Russell's memory, donations may be made to Chans Hospice, 50 Baribeau Drive, Brunswick 04011.

Dianne Margaret Rowe

PORTLAND — Dianne Margaret Rowe, 61, of Codman Street died Sunday, July 27, 2003, at her residence unexpectedly.

She was born in Augusta, the daughter of Albert and Esther Washuk Learned, where she attended schools graduating from Cony High School class of 1960. She also attended nursing school in Waterville.

Dianne was employed as a licensed practical nurse at MaineMedical Center, Seaside Nursing Home, the former Osteopathic Hospital of Maine, and Sisters of Mercy Motherhouse Infirmary.

She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

She enjoyed boating, gardening and following the golf careers of her cousins, Martha White and Penny Cummings. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren.

She leaves a son, David Rowe Jr. and his wife, Karen, of Westbrook; two daughters, Tracy and her husband, Jeffrey Morris, of Portland and Debra and her husband, Randy White, of Cape Elizabeth; one sister, Mary Lou and her husband, Robert Egts, of St. Simons Island, Ga.; one brother, Steve and his wife, Barbra Learned, of Augusta; five grandchildren, Janessa White, Matthew and Meaghan Morris, Devin and Joshua Rowe.

Visiting hours will be held 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., where prayers will be recited at 9:15 a.m. Thursday, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Interment will be private. If desired contributions may be made in her memory to Barbra Bush Hospital for Children, c/o MMC 22 Bramhall Street, Portland.

Catherine Cronin

1934-2003

ROCKTON, Ill. — Catherine H. "Katie" Cronin, 69, of Rockton, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, in Swedish American Hospital, Rockford.

She was born June 14, 1934, in Augusta, Maine, the daughter of John and Susan Harvey Sproul. Katie married Dennis Cronin on June 16, 1956, in Augusta, Maine.

Katie was an incredibly devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was a very active member in the community, schools and events. Some of her many memberships include the Jaycettes, Mother of Twins Club, Rockton Grade School PTO and Rockton Village Planning Committee. She was a chairman for Our Town Committee. Katie was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church and a member of the Altar and Rosary Society.

Survivors include her husband, Dennis, of Rockton; children Cathy Cronin of Columbia City, Ind., Kelly (Sorin) Jordache of Fleetwood, Pa., Kristi (Greg) Klimowicz of Twin Lake, Mich., Kevin Cronin of Rockford, Sue (Bob) Cheney of West Chester, Ohio, Shaun Cronin of Kingstown, St. Vincent West Indies, Julie (Shawn) Oberreiter of Mentor, Ohio, and Jennifer (David) Parrish of LaBelle, Mo.; 15 grandchildren, Matei, Lydia and Luca Jordache, Jonathon, Steve, Joe and Susie Klimowicz, Taryn and Adam Cheney, Sarah, Emily, and Andrew Oberreiter, Jackson, Noah and Sam Parrish; two brothers, Robert (Donna) Sproul, and Paul(Jeannette) Sproul; five sisters, Annie Tomasello, Mary Wing, Ida (Joe) Owen, Jane Morin and Pauline (Ralph) Marceau; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one son, Dennis C. Cronin Jr.; her parents; two sisters, Lillian Quigley and Doris Sproul; and two brothers, Harvey Sproul and Oliver Sproul.

A funeral Mass of Christian burial will be hold at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, in St. Peter Catholic Church with the Rev. Zdzislaw Francis Wawryszuk officiating. Burial will be in Rockton Cemetery, Rockton. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday in Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, Wis., with a scripture service at 7:45 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to one's favorite charity in Katie's name.

Marie Magdalena Bouman Orfield

1906-2003

FARMINGDALE — Marie Magdalena Bouman Orfield, 97, died peacefully Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, at her daughter's home here.

She was born in Freeman, S.D., on April 1, 1906, the fourth of 10 children of Henry J. and Magdalena (Erdman) Bouman. She was raised in Hamburg, Minn., where her father was the Lutheran minister. She graduated from Norwood Young America High School.

Marie taught in the Hamburg Parochial School for several years before attending Mankata State Teachers College where she earned her teachers certificate. She then taught elementary school in Austin, Minn., for several years.

While in Austin, she met and married Leland S. Orfield on Dec. 27, 1936. During her married life, the Orfield family lived near Lakeharriet in Minneapolis and spent summers on a farm in Forman, N.D. Marie cooked many splendid meals for large gatherings of friends and relatives in their Sheridan Avenue home.

For 50 years, she was active in Mount Olive Lutheran Church as a Sunday school teacher and a member of various women's groups. Marie and Leland and their family traveled extensively in the United States and Europe.

Her husband, Leland, died in 1993. She is also predeceased by brothers and sisters Meta Mesenbring, Walter Bouman, Gertrude Bouman, Herbert Bouman, Helene Schliesser, Martha Trier and Herman Bouman.

Surviving are four children, Bernhard Leland Orfield and wife Mary, Henry Wallace Orfield and wife Nancy, Barbara Marie Loken and husband Neal and Ronald Nils Orfield and wife Nancy; grandchildren Susan Orfield, Eric Orfield and wife Dawn, Kevin Orfield and wife Lynda, Carrie Onan and husband Mike, Anna Loken, Won Mee Loken and Laura Liddy; 11 great-grandchildren, Lauren, Paige and Noah Orfield, Leland, Nicholas, Andrew and Zachery Orfield, Julie and Jackson Orfield, Alphonso Lidell and Savon Marcell Williams.

A memorial service will be held in Minnesota at a later date. Arrangements are by Wheeler Funeral Home of Oakland.

Ernest M. Chapman Jr.

1928-2003

LIMINGTON — Ernest M. Chapman Jr. passed away Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was born in Dresden on Nov. 15, 1928, the son of the late Ernest M. Chapman Sr. and Grace L. Chapman. "Ernie," as he was called by his many friends and family, started school in the one-room school house in Dresden.

He joined the Marine Corps in 1948, serving in operations against enemy forces in South and central Korea, Dec. 14, 1950-Sept. 10, 1951. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with two stars. Ernie was also instrumental in the capture and securing of Seoul Korea, Sept. 21-Oct. 7, 1950.

Ernie was involved the Wonsan-Hungnam-Chosin Campaign, Oct. 28-Dec. 11, 1950. He was a heavy mortar unit leader. Ernie was employed as a painter for many years after his honorable discharge from the Marine Corps.

He is survived by his loving wife of more than 53 years, Lillian Frisbie Chapman Limington; daughter Linda Marsh of Rochester, N.H.; brother Ralph Chapman of Freeport, Edward Chapman and his wife, Addy, of Limington; sisters Grace Vance of Portland, Lorraine Towns of Shapleigh, and Loretta MacAffee and her husband, Ralph, of Mesa, Ariz.

A graveside service will be held at the new Maine Veterans Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta, on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003, at 11 a.m. with military honors being performed by the Marine Corps.
