Alton W. Myers

BRIDGTON — Alton W. Myers, 67, beloved husband and father, died Feb. 26, 2000, at Bridgton, after a brief illness.

He was born on May 24, 1932, the son of William H. and Barbara Cutler Myers, of Scarborough. He attended Sacred Heart School, in Portland, and participated in choir and was an altar boy at Cathedral Catholic Church, in Portland.

As a young boy, he was active in Boy Scouts and was recognized as an Eagle Scout.

He married Daveen Poland in 1965, and worked for many years for Dixie Hendrix's Monument Co. in Auburn. Active in the construction industry, he operated North Star-Polaris, Inc., in Waterboro, until he retired in 1994.

He was involved in boxing and received a Golden Gloves boxing championship award in 1949. Mr. Myers joined the Army in 1952, and became part of the mountain climbing division stationed in Austria. He received an honorable discharge in 1954.

A multi-talented musician, he started playing guitar at age 10. He played in several local bands, including the Cumberland Ridgerunners. He entertained with many well-known personalities, including Ken MacKenzie, Dick Curless, Don Reno and Bill Ankatel.

His musical talents and positive influences affected the students of Bates College, who presented him with a Martin guitar to show their appreciation for his friendship and the leadership contributions he made while employed as the athletic equipment manager during the early 1970s.

Out of his generosity and love for bluegrass music, Mr. Myers opened his home to hundreds of participants who came from many states and eastern Canada each year to enjoy bluegrass field picking and elaborate barbecues, at no charge.

He was an enthusiastic collector of rare instruments and antique records, and contributed to the Dixie Flyer and National Mountain Railroader publication in Knoxville, Tenn., sharing his knowledge of early recordings with others. He was a member of N.A.V.R.E. and the Family Railroad Organization.

Alton enjoyed gourmet cooking, World War II history and was an amateur sound engineer.

Mr. Myers was predeceased by his parents, and a sister, Ellen Huff, of Scarborough.

He is survived by his wife, Daveen, son, Kevin, and daughter, Shana, all of Waterford; a son, Joseph Brown, of Norway; daughters Mary Elsea and Pam Wilson, both of Toledo, Ohio, and Rebecca Marston of Andover; brothers Edmond, of Massachusetts, Gerry, and his wife, Olga, of Riverside, Calif., William, of Scarborough, Donald, and his wife, Carolyn, of Cumberland, and Benjamin, and his wife, Lorraine, of Lyman; many nieces and nephews; and four grandchildren, including Dalton K. Myers, 7, who shared his love of trains and railroading.

Family and friends may attend visiting hours 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, March 1, at Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 230 Main St., Norway. Interment will be in the spring at Pulpit Rock Cemetery.

Paul S. Liscord Jr.

PETERBOROUGH, N.H. —Paul S. Liscord Jr., 74, of Peterborough, N.H., died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, after a long battle with prostate cancer. He was formerly a resident of Windsor, Conn., Doylestown, Pa., and Hopkinton, N.H.

He was born Oct. 29, 1925, in Hartford, Conn., the only child of Paul S. Liscord and Ethel Seaver Wood Liscord. He was a graduate of Loomis School, in Windsor, Conn., and graduated from Dartmouth College, in Hanover, N.H., in 1948.

From March, 1945, to May, 1946, he served in Europe with the 3rd Infantry Regiment, U.S. Army, as a radio technician, achieving the rank of technical sergeant, 4th class. He was involved in the final reduction of post Battle of the Bulge, and occupation of Nazi Germany. After World War II, Mr. Liscord pursued a long and successful career as a casualty actuary. He worked for Travelers Insurance Co., in Hartford, Conn., from 1948 to 1970, ultimately serving as vice president in charge of all casualty actuarial operations in the company.

He later joined the Insurance Company of North America in Philadelphia, Pa., managing its casualty actuarial department from 1971 to 1975. He also worked for the New Hampshire Department of Insurance in Concord, and as chief actuary with the Massachusetts Insurance Rating Bureau, Boston.

For 40 years, Mr. Liscord was a member of the Casualty Actuarial Society of America, serving as president in 1973. He capped this most successful actuarial career by founding his own consulting firm, Liscord, Ward and Roy, in Concord, N.H., in 1977. The firm serves corporate and governmental clients throughout the United States and Canada.

Mr. Liscord had a passion for singing, and sang all his life in school glee clubs, and at the Congregational churches to which he belonged.

Upon retiring in December 1990, he pursued this choral avocation with a zeal unencumbered by his work. He sang with the Monadnock Chorus, the New Hampshire Friendship Chorus, the Concord Vocal Octet and the Concord Chorale, serving also as its president. His association with these singing groups afforded him many opportunities to perform and travel throughout Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Russia, New Zealand, and Australia. On two occasions he performed in Carnegie Hall in New York City, most recently in 1998.

Mr Liscord is survived by his wife and "love of his life," Helen MacDonald Liscord; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Douglas Kelly, of Windsor, Conn., and Nadine and David Bothwell, of Bedford, N.H.; and two sons and daughters-in-law, Paul S. Liscord III and Barbara McKusick of Cape Elizabeth, and Thomas Liscord and Lisa Clarcq, of Wayne; as well as eight grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 12, at the First Church in Windsor, Congregational, 107 Palisado Ave., Windsor, Conn. Graveside services will be at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the memory of Paul Samuel Liscord Jr., to the Norris Cotton Cancer Research Ctr., Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Ctr., 1 Medical Drive, Lebanon, N.H. 03756.

Robert E. Soper

LADY LAKE, Fla. — Robert Edward Soper, 70, of Lady Lake, Fla., died, Monday, Feb. 28, 2000.

He was born in Livermore Falls, Maine.

Mr. Soper retired as an auditor for the state of Maine and moved to Lady Lake from Manchester, Maine, in 1989.

He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. Mr. Soper was an avid golfer and bowler. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Bangor, Maine, and the American Legion, in Augusta, Maine.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Soper, of Lady Lake, Fla.; a son, Scott R. Soper, of Indianapolis, Ind.; sisters, Dorothy Bradbury, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Carolyn Dunmore, of Livermore Falls; a grandson, Matthew S. Soper, of Indianapolis, Ind.; and many nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are by Beyers Funeral Home, 134 North Highway 27-441, Lady Lake, Fla.

Alfred J. Wright

PORTLAND — Dr. Alfred J. Wright Jr. 84, a resident of 10 White St., Lewiston, and a summer resident of Harpswell, died early Monday morning, Feb. 28, 2000, at Maine Medical Center following a short illness.

He was born in Lakewood, Ohio, Sept. 6, 1915, the son of Alfred J. and Anne Muth Wright Sr. He attended schools in Ohio, and, while in Boston, attended Boston Latin School.

He was a graduate of Adelbert College at Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He received his master's degree from Ohio State University.

He then went on to teach in private schools, including Los Alamos Ranch School, in New Mexico. He entered the Army in 1942, serving three years in Europe as a cryptographer and translator. During the war, while in Paris, he met Selysette Panzera, daughter of a Parisian singer. Upon his return to New York, he married Selysette on Dec. 21, 1946.

Following his marriage, he went on to Columbia University where he received his doctorate in foreign languages. In 1949, he moved to Hartford, Conn., where he taught at Trinity College until 1957, when he moved to Maine to become professor of foreign languages at Bates College.

He went on to become the youngest department chairman in Bates history and remained at Bates until his retirement in 1984.

Dr. Wright was a contributing editor to the French XX Bibliography for over 40 years. He was a member of the Professors of Modern Languages Association and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. His interests included gardening at his summer home in Harpswell, physical fitness, including walking, and music, which he both composed and played as an accomplished pianist.

He was predeceased by his wife, Selysette, in 1984.

Survivors include one daughter, Anne-Magdeleine Wright, of East Winthrop; three sons, Christopher, of Ithaca, N.Y., Robin, of Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Timothy, of Scarborough. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and one nephew.

Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m., Friday, March 3, at Bates College Chapel, College Street, Lewiston, with Rev. Kerry Maloney officiating. Spring interment will be in West Harpswell Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alfred J. Wright Foreign Language Award, C/O Development Office, Lane Hall, Bates College, Lewiston 04240.

Arrangements are by Pinette Funeral Homes, of Lewiston.

Alphena Belanger

WATERVILLE — Alphena (Ouellette) Belanger, 78, of Wallagrass and Waterville, beloved wife of the late Patrick Belanger, died Sunday, June 4, 2000, at a Waterville health-care facility.

She was born May 11, 1922, in Eagle Lake, daughter of Henry and Phoeb (Gagnon) Ouellette.

She had been employed as an elementary school cook for School Administrative District 27 for 20 years, cooking in Soldier Pond, and as head cook in Fort Kent for six years.

She was a member of Ladies of St. Anne, of Wallagrass, and Fort Kent Columbiettes.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Edwin Theriault, and her second husband, Patrick Belanger, in 1998.

Survivors include five daughters, Julie Taylor, of Wallagrass, Pauline Hebert, of Ballston Spa, N.Y., Jackie Theriault, of Waterville, Maxine Roy, of Eagle Lake, and Bertha Sirois, of Gardiner; four sons, Carroll Theriault and Roger Belanger, both of Ballston Spa, Nelson Belanger, of Ellenton, Fla., and Edgar Belanger, of Plainville, Conn.; four sisters, Emelda Toussaint, of Eagle Lake, Sr. Gloria Ouellette, of the Franciscan Order, in Worcester, Mass., Cynthia Winters, of Southington, Conn., and Thelma Saucier, of Ashland; one brother, Jules Ouellette, of Fort Kent; 24 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, and from 8 a.m. Thursday, June 8, until departure for Soldier Pond.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 8, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, in Soldier Pond, with Rev. James Albert officiating. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Soldier Pond.

At the request of the family those who wish may donate in her memory to the Alzheimer's Association Maine Chapter, 163 Lancaster St., Suite 160B, Portland 04101-2406, or Ronald McDonald House, 654 State St., Bangor 04401-5649. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Earl R. Tabor Jr.

BRANCH MILLS — Earl Richmond Tabor Jr., 70, who retired after 20 years in the Air Force, died Sunday, June 4, 2000, at Veterans Medical and Regional Office Center, Togus, after a brief illness.

Born in Boston, Mass., on Aug. 10, 1929, he was the son of Earl Richmond and Laura (Rawley) Tabor. He was raised and attended school in Massachusetts.

Earl retired from the Air Force as a technical sergeant. He served in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. Earl was stationed in California, Washington, Utah and Germany.

He was married to June Josephine Harrington, in Tacoma, Wash., June 7, 1969. He and his wife moved to Branch Mills village, in China, 18 years ago.

Earl was a life member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter at Togus.

In addition to his wife, June J. Tabor, of Branch Mills, he is survived by his daughter, Marilyn O'Connor, of North Brookfield, Mass., and her family; his stepson, Richard Willette, of Kingston, Mass., and his family; his sister, Laura Bernard, of Massachusetts; and his brother, Stanley Tabor, of Massachusetts.

By request, no visiting hours are planned.

A committal service and burial will be held at a later date, at Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, Mass.

Gray & Pratt Funeral Directors, Windsor, are in charge of arrangements.

Richard B. Small

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio — Richard Barney Small, 81, husband of Barbara (Lishness) Small, died Saturday, May 13, 2000, at Huron Road Hospital, in East Cleveland.

He was born in Toronto, Ontario, on Aug. 13, 1918, the son of Herbert C. and Mary (Lamson) Small.

Mr. Small graduated from Gardiner (Maine) High School.

He received his associate's degree from Blackburn College, in 1939, a bachelor's degree from Park College, in 1941, and his master's degree from Cornell University, in 1946.

Mr. Small had been employed at several colleges and universities, most recently as associate professor at Cleveland State University.

He was a member of American Association of University Professors, American Council of Teachers of Foreign Languages, American Translators Association, and Northern Ohio Translators Association.

Mr. Small was predeceased by two sisters, Elizabeth Burnell and Janet Small; and one brother, Lunds Small.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara (Lishness) Small, of Cleveland Heights; and several cousins.

A graveside service will be held at a later date at Howard Cemetery, West Gardiner, Maine.

Arrangements are by Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta, Maine.
