Frances Lessard

MONMOUTH — Frances Lessard, 55, a resident of Maple Street, Monmouth, died Monday night, June 5, 2000, at her home surrounded by her loved ones, following a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born on Feb. 28, 1945, in New York, N.Y. She attended Litchfield schools.

Frances worked for many years as a certified nurse's assistant at Greene Acres and Central Maine Medical Center.

She was a member of Greene Baptist Church.

Frances volunteered at Heritage Manor.

She had a love of the outdoors and pets, especially her cat and dog.

Frances is survived by her three daughters, Pam Gray, and her husband, Bruce, of South Monmouth, Tina Duquette, and her husband, Robert, of Sabattus, and Rhonda Cook, of Monmouth; one son, Ronald Cook Jr., and his wife, Melissa, of Gardiner; nine grandchildren; a foster sister, Ida Greene, of Marysville, La.; and her longtime and dear companion, Billie Jo Pettingill, of Litchfield.

Visiting hours are 6-8 p.m. Thursday, June 8, at Bragdon-Finley Funeral Home, 707 Main St., Monmouth.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, at Greene Baptist Church. Interment will follow, in Ridge Cemetery, in Monmouth.

Lawrence C. Meise

TOPSHAM — Lawrence "Larry" C. Meise, 38, of Fairview Avenue, Augusta, died Friday, June 2, 2000 as the result of an automobile accident.

He was born in Staten Island, N.Y., May 1, 1962, the son of Carl and Margaret Fenenic Meise. He graduated from Sayreville High School, in Sayreville, N.J.

He married Lisa Canfield in Perth Amboy, N.J., on May 6, 1989.

Mr. Meise was a custodian at William Cone School, in Topsham.

He was an avid New York Giants football fan.

He is survived by his wife, of Augusta; two daughters, Ashley Meise and Hannah Meise, both of Augusta; his parents, of Conifer, Colo.; three brothers, Robert Meise and Stephen Meise, both of Colorado, and Edward Meise, of New Jersey; a sister, Susan Meise, of Colorado; and paternal grandmother, Charlotte Meise, of Staten Island, N.Y.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 7, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Western Avenue, Augusta. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Larry Meise Childrens Trust Fund, c/o Gardiner Savings Bank, 66 Eastern Ave., Augusta 04330.

Audrey S. Pindar

AUGUSTA — Audrey Smith Pindar, 78, formerly of Fairfield and Farmingdale, died Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at Maine Veterans Home, in Augusta.

She was born in Watertown, N.Y., on Sept. 8, 1921, the daughter of Sherman and Gladys Laberee Smith.

Mrs. Pindar had been employed for 19 years at Veterans Administration Medical Regional Office Center, in Togus.

Audrey was predeceased by her husband, Curtis M. Pindar, and her two sons, Glen and Bruce Pindar.

She is survived by two brothers, Granville Smith, of Falmouth, and Sherman Smith, of Waldoboro; two sisters, June Dunton, of Florida, and Geraldine Marks, of Thomaston; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 8, at Whitefield Cemetery, Route 218, Whitefield.

Arrangements are under the care of Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner.

John W. Bernotavicz

LITCHFIELD — John William Bernotavicz, 57, passed away peacefully Monday, July 3, 2000, at home with his loving family.

Son of Amelia and John Bernotavicz, Ph.D., John was born May 25, 1943, in Brockton, Mass. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1965, after which he spent two years in Senegal, West Africa, as a Peace Corps volunteer. He graduated from Georgetown University Law Center in 1971. While in law school, John met the former Freda Douglas and they married in 1968. Looking for a good place to raise a family, John and Freda moved in 1974 to Maine, where they bought a home in Litchfield and John worked for Pine Tree Legal Services.

His two children, Alexa and Jarad, fulfilled his dream of growing up in the country, where they learned to love the outdoors and enjoyed a close family life.

John's professional career developed from a local solo practice in Richmond to international corporate litigation with the Portland firm of Curtis, Thaxter, Stevens, Broder, & Micoleau, where he served as the managing partner of the firm from 1989 to 1994. Along with Kenneth Curtis, John headed the International Practice Group for the firm and had extensive national and international experience with the acquisition and development of energy projects, most particularly with hydroelectric facilities and renewable resources. He was especially proud of the many contributions he was able to make to his adopted state. For example, he was co-chairman of the Governor's Advisory Council on International Trade and was instrumental in establishing the Maine International Trade Center, of which he was vice-chairman.

Throughout his life, John traveled widely, nurturing a view of the world that is both enlightened and compassionate. His loving nature, his depth of understanding, and the spiritual guidance he provided were evident to all who knew him.

He will be greatly missed by his wife and children; his father, Dr. John W. Bernotavicz, of Hyannis, Mass.; sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Jon Heffelfinger, of Whitmore Lake, Mich.; and brother and sister-in-law, Colin and Helen Douglas, of Whickham, England.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 7, at the St. Charles Borromeo Church, McKeen Street, Brunswick.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Siddhartha School Project. This school provides Tibetan Buddhist educational opportunities for the children of Stok, Ladakh, in India. Please make any contributions payable to FOTWA/ SSP, at Siddhartha School Project, PO Box 382250, Cambridge, MA 02238-2250, in memory of John W. Bernotavicz. Arrangements are by the Brackett Funeral Home of Brunswick.

Norman F. McKenney

READFIELD — Norman F. McKenney, 46, of Main Street in Readfield, died unexpectedly Sunday, July 2, 2000, in Squaretown Township while on a fishing and camping trip with his brother, Herbert.

He was born Feb. 18, 1954, in Augusta, son of Max L. and Margaret E. (Jacquith) McKenney, and attended local schools, graduating from Winthrop High School, class of 1973.

He had been employed by Lipman Poultry and Hannaford Bros. for a number of years.

Survivors include his father, Max L. McKenney, of Readfield; three brothers, Richard McKenney, and his wife, Alice, of Augusta, Alton McKenney, and his wife, Mary, of Wayne, and Herbert McKenney, of Readfield; several aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his mother, Margaret (Jacquith) McKenney, March 2, 1989.

A graveside funeral will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, July 7, at the East Readfield Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Peter Misner officiating. Arrangements are by Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta.

Margaret S. (Maggie) Emery

ROME — Margaret S. (Maggie) Emery, 52, of Rome, died early Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, at Inland Hospital in Waterville.

She was born July 27, 1948, in Winterville, daughter of Adrian and Jeannette (Gagnon) LeClair.

She was employed for several years at New Balance Athletic Shoe in Norridgewock.

She loved spending time with her dog, Wiley. She enjoyed camping and other outdoor activities. She liked spending time at the races with her family.

Survivors include her longtime companion, Ed Knight, and her beloved daughter, Casey Emery, of Rome; Ed's children, Trudy Batchelder, of Canaan, Sandy Knight, of Embden, Mark Knight, of Eddington, Kim Cote, of Oakland, Howard Knight, of Oakland, and Ginny Savio, of Skowhegan; her loving mother, Jeannette, of Skowhegan; five sisters, Rita Kimball and Jean Clark, of Skowhegan, Theresa Alley, of Clinton, Ann LeClair, of Canaan, Ann Kimball, of Norridgewock; six brothers, Arnold, of Atlanta, Ga., Norman, Adrian, Paul, Edwin, all of Skowhegan, and Robert, of North Waterboro; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and a close friend, Sandra Knight, who spent many long hours by her side during her illness.

A graveside service will be announced at a later date.

Albertha H. Libby

REDMOND, Ore. — Albertha Helen (LaCroix) Libby, 88, died Friday, May 19, 2000, in Redmond.

She was born June 4, 1911, in Waterville, Maine.

She married Albernie Libby, June 23, 1930, and they raised 10 children. He died in 1985.

She moved to Downey, Calif., in 1955, Klamath Falls in 1993, and Central Oregon in 1997.

She was a homemaker who loved to cook, bake and sew.

Survivors include four daughters, Joyce Rose Stafford, of Texas, Pauline Goodrich, of Missouri, Louise Foreman, of Oklahoma, and Faith Heidtman, of Oregon; three sons, Earl Libby, of Maine, and Ernest and Alfred, of California; four sisters and three brothers, including Ernest LaCroix, of Redmond; 43 grandchildren and many great- and great-great-grandchildren.

A private service was held with arrangements by Redmond Memorial Chapel.

Emma R. Luce

OAKLAND — Emma R. Luce, 89, a resident of 22 Pleasant St., died Tuesday morning, Aug. 8, 2000, at the Oak Grove Nursing Home in Waterville.

She was born in Oakland, daughter of the late John B. Veilleux and Mary E. (Boucher) Veilleux, and attended Mount Merici Academy and St. Francis de Sales Schools in Waterville. She was employed for 22 years at Depositors Trust Co., now Key Bank, in Oakland, serving in the loan department and in supervisory capacity.

She was a graduate of the classical course of college at Mont Notre Dame in Sherbroke, Quebec, Canada, an affiliate of Montreal University, and Thomas College Business School in Waterville, class of 1925.

She was employed by the town of Oakland as secretary to the town manager for 14 years, 1935-1949, and was in that employment when the town-manager form of government was first established in Oakland. She was a former private secretary to the late John L. Thomas Sr. of Thomas Business College. She partook of courses offered in AIB Banking and Municipal Planning.

She was a member of St. Theresa's Parish, having served as president of St. Theresa's Guild, member of the Columbus Guild in Waterville, having served as president. She was treasurer of the MDCCW Waterville District for 18 years. She was a member of the Oakland-Maine Community Betterment Program.

She married Albert S. Luce, Feb. 22, 1946; he died July 15, 1976.

She was predeceased by a stepson, Stanley Luce; stepdaughters, Mrs. Henry (Ella) Varney, Mrs. Harold (Madeleine) Field, Mrs. Edward (Eunice) Creamer; one nephew, Francis J. Vigue; two brothers, John B. Vigue and Jos. M.E. Vigue.

Survivors include stepdaughters, Mrs. Harold (Dorothy) Stevens, of Oakland, Mrs. Florence Rowe, of Newport, Mrs. Floyd (Ellen) James, of Pittsfield; nephews, John B. Vigue Jr., of Skowhegan, Robert H. Lane, of Winslow; nieces, Mrs. Margaret L. Clark, of Oakland, and Mrs. Joseph (Marie) Martin, of Oakland; one great-niece, Kimberly Martin Gilbert, of Hudson, N.H.; one great-nephew, Keith J. Vigue, of Farmingdale; several step-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, at the Veilleux Funeral Home, 8 Elm St., Waterville.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at St. Theresa's Catholic Church, Church Street, Oakland. Burial and committal prayers will follow at St. Francis Cemetery in Waterville.

Cecile D. Robitaille

AUBURN — Cecile D. Robitaille, 84, of 35 Moody Road in Lisbon, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, at Clover Manor in Auburn.

She was born in Grand Isle, Dec. 21, 1915, daughter of George and Sophie (Hebert) Dubois, and attended Lewiston schools.

Retiring in 1971, she was employed for 27 years at Bates Manufacturing Co. Hill Division and later at Geiger Bros. and Shapiro Shoe.

She was a member of Holy Cross Parish and the Holy Cross Senior Citizen. She was an avid seamstress and liked to do special projects around the house.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Laureat A. of Lisbon, whom she married June 26, 1937; six sons, Rev. Marcel Robitaille of Waterville, Gerard and his wife, Joanne, George and his wife, Barbara, Larry and his wife, Paula, all of Lisbon, David and his wife, Susan, of Lewiston, Daniel and his companion, Kathy Lachance of Lewiston; two sisters, Mrs. Ernest (Isabelle) Morrissette, Mrs. Armand (Lorenza) Daillaire, all of Lewiston; 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two daughters, Diane Robitaille and Mrs. Laurier (Doris) Mathieu; seven brothers and four sisters.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, at The Fortin Group Funeral Home, Turner Street, Auburn.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, at Holy Cross Church in Lewiston. Committal will be held at St. Peter's Cemetery.
