Alex John Sillanpaa

ROME — Alex John Sillanpaa, 74, of Rome, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Waterville.

He was born Jan. 18, 1926, in Kingfield, son of Alex and Impi (Miller) Sillanpaa, who immigrated from Finland in the early 1900s. He attended Kingfield schools and was employed for 31 years by the Maine State Department of Transportation, retiring in 1982.

John was always the happiest when he was visiting family and friends, playing cribbage, or watching a western movie (while eating chocolate ice cream). Teasing and making people laugh were real close to the top of his list.

John was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Robert. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 45 years, Betty (Allen) Sillanpaa; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Steve Cianchette, of Pittsfield; son, Eric Sillanpaa, of Rome; four sisters, Sylvia and husband, Carl Carlson, of Florida, Salli and husband, Lucian Dudley, and Anita and husband, Everett Parsons, of Kingfield, and Minerva Pulsifer, of Massachusetts; four brothers, Wiekko and Austin "Pop" Sillanpaa, of Kingfield, Martin Sillanpaa and friend, Louise, of Kingfield, Niilo and wife, Blanche Sillanpaa, of New Vineyard; two special grandchildren, Becca and Alex Cianchette, of Pittsfield; friend, Dan Randieau, of Pittsfield; special sisters-in-law, Shirley Allen, of Windsor, and Beverly Kelley, of Oakland; 20 special nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to visit from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, at Wheeler Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Oakland.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Rome Village Cemetery. Following the service the family asks anyone wishing to join them at the Rome Community Center.

The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Kristin Holm and the MaineGeneral Medical Center Staff, and Dr. Roger Renfrew and the Redington Fairview Hospital Staff.

Memorial donations may be made in John's memory to either the American Lung Association, 122 State St., Augusta ME 04330; or American Cancer Society, 52 Federal St., Brunswick ME 04011.

John L. Merrill

SOUTH SOLON — John Lander Merrill, 78, a practicing attorney for nearly 50 years, went to his eternal home Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, after a long, courageous battle with emphysema.

He was born April 19, 1922, in Skowhegan, the son of William Folsom Merrill and Jeannette Lander Merrill.

John attended local schools, and graduated from Phillips Academy, in Andover, Mass. He entered Bowdoin College, but left to join the Army during World War II. He served in the European Theater with the rank of staff sergeant.

Following the war, he returned to his studies at Bowdoin, graduating in 1948. He went on to receive his law degree from Boston University in 1952, and returned to his hometown to practice law with his father in the firm of Merrill and Merrill. John was admitted to the bar by his uncle, Edward F. Merrill. During his law career, he was elected Somerset County attorney and Somerset probate judge.

He was past master of Somerset Masonic Lodge A.F.& A.M., DeMolay Commandery 10, White Shrine, Past Patron of Sunset Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, in Skowhegan; and Keystone Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, Solon. He was a member of Bingham Congregational Church, where he was a deacon; Somerset Bar Association; Somerset County Republicans; the School Administrative District 54 school board during the construction of the new high school; and Federated Church, serving on the finance board for many years.

Although dedicated to his family and his law profession, some of John's happiest hours were spent hunting at Upper Enchanted Pond, and fishing and camping at Pierce Pond. He always yearned for the first spring brook fishing when the snow began to disappear and the ice began to melt.

Earlier years were spent at the family cottage at Pleasant Pond, where he and his wife of 52 years spent their honeymoon. He married Barbara Dow, of Northampton, Mass., June 5, 1948.

After returning to Skowhegan, John and his family resided on Water Street, spending their summers at their farm in South Solon. They moved in 1976 to their new South Solon home, which was built entirely of wood cut on John's land by John, family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, of South Solon; three children, William F. Merrill, and his wife, Luciann "Midge," of South Solon, Harriet Merrill Davis, and her husband, Glen, of Hoboken, N.J., and Frank D. Merrill, and his wife, Nancy P., of Skowhegan; three grandchildren, Reagan T.W. Merrill, of Derry, N.H., and Sean F. Merrill and Alaena S. Merrill, both of South Solon; a lifelong friend, Paul LaFond, of Skowhegan; one sister, Frances Sterling, of Texas; and three nieces, Marilyn Gondeck, Janet Thorp and Martha Sterling-Golden.

A celebration of his life will be held at the convenience of his family in November. Masonic services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, at Smart and Edwards Funeral Home, 261 Madison Ave., Skowhegan.

Donations may be made in his memory to Bingham Congregational Church, P.O. Box 114, Bingham 04920; Skowhegan Federated Church, Island Avenue, Skowhegan 04976; or American Lung Association of Maine, 122 State St., Augusta 04330-5615.

Edwin J. Watson

AUGUSTA — Edwin J. Watson, 59, of Crosby Street, was found dead Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at his residence after a long illness.

He was born in Augusta, on June 13, 1941, the son of John W. Watson and Ida (Berube) Watson, and graduated from Cony High School in the class of 1960.

Ed served honorably in the Air Force during the Vietnam War.

He had been employed by Depositors Trust Company for a short time. He was previously employed by White Cloud Laundry for several years, and by John J. Watson Plumbing & Heating Company as an oil truck driver for 21 years.

Ed was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and of Abnaki Council 334 Knights of Columbus, and a former member of Abnaki Assembly 346 4th degree Knights of Columbus. He was also a former councilor for St. Aloysius Gonzaga Circle of Columbian Squires, and a former assistant scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 647, of Hallowell.

Surviving is a sister, Betty Huff, and her husband, Philip, of Augusta; two aunts, Germaine Godbout, and Martha Curran; two nieces, Deborah Newcombe and Dawn Pelletier; two grandnieces, a grandnephew, several cousins and his best friend, Rene J. Blais, of Augusta.

There will be no public visiting hours. Committal prayers will be offered at noon Thursday, Oct. 5, at Father Leonard LeClair Memorial Chapel, Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Old Belgrade Road, Augusta. Burial will follow in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Connor Animal Shelter, Pet Haven Lane, Augusta 04330, or the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are under the care of Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.

Victoria Dube

EAST WINTHROP — Victoria Dube, 64, of Turtle Run Road, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, at her residence after a long illness.

She was born in Augusta on Oct. 5, 1935, the daughter of Victor Ellis and Irene (Roy) Ellis.

Mrs. Dube was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Winthrop.

She enjoyed traveling, camping, playing cards, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Surviving is her husband of 47 years, Roger L. Dube, of East Winthrop; her father, of Arizona; three sons, Phillippe Dube, and his wife, Christine, of Augusta, Paul Dube, and Roger Dube II, and his wife, Jodi, all of Winthrop; six daughters, Lisa Curtis, and her husband, Kim, of Van Buren, Isabel Thomas, and her husband, Tim, of Monmouth, Irene Ogon, and her husband, Joe, of Vassalboro, Theresa Pettengill, and her husband, Larry, of St. Agatha, Linda Wright, and her husband, Harvey, of Winthrop, and Debbie Roy, of Augusta; one brother, Victor Ellis, of South Dakota; one sister, Nancy Merkel, and her husband, Harry, of Brewster, Mass.; 29 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and one on the way; and several aunts, uncles nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours are 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Augusta. Burial will follow in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Old Belgrade Road, Augusta.

Angelina P. Kent

RANDOLPH — Angelina P. Kent, 94, of Kinderhook Street, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Facility, Glenridge Drive, Augusta.

She was born in Waterville on July 23, 1906, the daughter of Philip and Caroline (King) Perry.

On Dec. 25, 1926, she married Plympton C. Kent Sr.

Mrs. Kent and her husband owned and operated Kent's Market, in Gardiner, for many years. She worked for C.F. Hathaway Company in Waterville for several years and for Margaret Chase Smith Handbags, where she retired in 1980.

She was a past member of Order of Eastern Star.

Mrs. Kent enjoyed fishing, bowling and playing beano with her friends. She was especially proud to have the new Randolph Town Office built on property that she formerly owned.

She was predeceased by her husband, Plympton C. Kent Sr., on June 6, 1972; a son, Plympton C. Kent Jr., in 1993; and two daughters, P. Diane Kent, in 1969, and G. Shirley Kent Peterson, in 1992.

Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Joan M. Kent, of Richmond; three grandchildren, Catherine Kent Gasper, and her husband, Robert, of Manchester, Steven Kent, of Bangor, and Andrew Kent, of West Gardiner; two great-grandchildren, Jason Gasper, of Brunswick, and Leslie Gasper, of Portland; and several nieces.

At her request, there will be no public visiting hours. A burial and committal service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, in Richmond Cemetery, Main Street, Richmond.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, New England Division, Inc., 52 Federal St., Brunswick 04011-2194.

Arrangements are under the care of Amesbury-White Funeral Home, 39 Washington Ave., Gardiner.

Lawrence M. Gabrion

ITHACA, Mich. — Lawrence M. Gabrion, 69, the son of Albert and Pearl Gabrion, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, after a long illness.

Gabrion, a lifelong resident of Ithaca, graduated in 1948 from Ithaca High School, where he was an outstanding athlete and class president. After serving two years in the Air Force, Gabrion began working for Lobdell-Emery Manufacturing Co. in Alma, Mich., where he ended his career of 30-plus years as head of the time-study and cost department.

Gabrion was a member of the Lions Club in Ithaca.

He is survived by his mother; his wife of 50 years, Mary; four children, Patrick Gabrion, of Hallowell, Maine, Rebecca Manderfield, of Davisburg, Mich., Michael Gabrion, of O'Fallon, Mo., and Annette Hull, of Ithaca; eight grandchildren, including Gavin and Sophie Gabrion, of Hallowell; two brothers, Marvin and John, and four sisters, Wanda, Bonnie, Maxine, and Vicki.

His family loves him and will always miss him.

Stanley Brooks

ORLAND — Stanley Shirly Brooks, 86, died Monday, Nov. 13, 2000, at his home surrounded by his loving family, after a long illness.

He was born May 3, 1914, in Old Town, the son of Lindell and Matilda (Boudreau) Brooks.

Upon graduating from high school in 1933, Shirly enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corps as a laborer.

In 1934 he moved to Bucksport and was hired by Maine Seaboard Paper Co., where he worked until the early 1940s. At that time he moved to Portland and worked at the South Portland Shipyard until enlisting in the Navy.

Upon receiving an honorable discharge, Shirly returned to Bucksport to once again work at the mill, then St. Regis Paper Co., where he performed a variety of jobs, the last being assistant paymaster until retiring in July 1979.

For more than 50 years he was a member of Felicity Lodge 19, AF&AM, American Legion Post 93, and Castine Grange. In addition, he was a member of Anah Temple Shrine.

Although dedicated to his family and home, some of Shirly's happiest hours were spent hunting and fishing throughout Maine with close friends.

Mr. Brooks was predeceased by his parents; five brothers, Everett, Arthur, Howard (Bobby), Claude and Charles; and two sisters, Evelyn and Madelyn.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Wilma (Marks) Brooks; two sons, Terry Brooks, and his wife, Alice, of Winthrop, and Dan Brooks, of Bangor; two granddaughters, Karen Grasso, and her husband, Ernest, of Chelmsford, Mass., and Michelle Butler, and her husband, James, of Rockland; two great-grandchildren, Joseph and Laura Grasso; one sister, Ida Parks, of St. Pauls, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a devoted niece, Maureen (Leach) Hawksley, and her husband, Richard, of Orland.

Friends are invited to visit with the family 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 14 Elm St., Bucksport, where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, with Rev. Tracey Reeves, of Orland United Methodist Church, and Rev. Gertrude Stone, Chaplain of New Hope Hospice, Inc., officiating. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Orland.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to New Hope Hospice, Inc., P.O. Box 757, Holden 04429, or Orland United Methodist Church, Orland 04472.

Leslie B. Higgins

DRESDEN — Leslie B. "Les" Higgins, 80, of Indian Road, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, while proudly marching in the local Veterans Day parade.

He was born in West Bath, the son of Frank and Olive (Bowker) Higgins, Dec. 23, 1919.

He attended Bath schools and started his military career in the National Guard. He went on to serve in the Army as a corporal, and later in the Navy, being honorably discharged in 1961. He was very proud to have retired from the Army with the rank of major.

In civilian life, Les was director of the Emergency Management Team in Augusta for several years.

He was active in town activities, serving on the Dresden School Board and School Building Committee, and was constable and selectman, and a deputy sheriff for Sagadahoc County.

Les was also very involved in many organizations through the years. He was a member and past master of Dresden Masonic Lodge, member of Bath and Wiscasset Masonic lodges, past commander of the Dresden-Richmond Veterans of Foreign Wars, longtime member of Richmond Legion Post 132 in Richmond, and the local Lions Club and was sexton of the Maple Grove Cemetery, in Dresden, for many years.

He enjoyed the outdoors, cutting wood, bowling and patriotic occasions.

He was predeceased by a brother and sister.

Les is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Hazel (Pushard) Higgins, of Dresden; son, Frank Higgins, of Dresden; sister, Frances Higgins Bixby, of Hebron; several nephews, cousins and one niece; also his two favorite dogs, Rambo and Ashley.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Richmond with Fr. Clement Thibodeau officiating. Burial will follow, at Maple Grove Cemetery, in Dresden, with military honors being provided by the American Legion.

In Les's name, donations may be made to the Humane Society of your choice.

Arrangements are by Kincer Funeral Home, Richmond.
