James J. Scheid

WINDSOR — James Joseph Scheid, 58, of Windsor Neck Road, died Monday, Nov. 13, 2000, at Maine Veterans Home, in Augusta, after a brief illness.

Born in New York City, July 12, 1942, he was the son of James Chester and Katherine J. (Higby) Sheid.

After graduating from high school, in New York, Jim served as a lance corporal in the Marine Corps just prior to the start of the Vietnam War.

He served 25 years on the New York City Police Dept., retiring as a sergeant.

He moved to Windsor from Long Island, N.Y., in 1990, and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Surviving are his mother, Katherine Scheid, and her husband, Al, of Windsor; three sons, Kevin Scheid, Steven Scheid and Scott Scheid, all of Long Island; a brother, John V. Scheid, of Windsor; a sister, Dorothy V. Murphy, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; several grandchildren; and nephews and nieces James C. Scheid, of Windsor, Heather M. Scheid, of Caribou, and Michael Murphy and Brian Murphy, both of New York.

Visiting hours are 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, at Gray & Pratt Funeral Home, Windsor Neck Road, Windsor.

No public service is planned. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family in New York.

Emily W. Dunn

BOWDOINHAM — Emily W. Dunn, 84, of White Road, passed away Monday, Nov. 13, 2000, at MaineGeneral Nursing Care Facility at Gray Birch after a short illness.

She was born Sept. 17, 1916, in Rowley, Mass., the daughter of Robert and Emily (Wadsworth) Wallace, and attended Richmond High School, graduating in 1934.

Emily worked at Ames Worsted Mill, in Richmond, Blake's Country Store, in Bowdoinham, and at home, being a dedicated and loving mother for her seven children.

She was also a Golden Sheaf and 70-year member of Progressive and Enterprise Grange 48, both of Richmond.

Emily was predeceased by her first husband, Otis Gray, in 1944, and her husband, Marshall Dunn Sr., in 1985; a son, Myron Dunn; a daughter, Susan Dunn; and brothers Raymond and Robert Wallace.

She is survived by her sons, Marshall Dunn Jr., of Bowdoinham, and Robert Gray, of West Virginia; daughters, Janice Curtis, of Richmond, Dorothy Thibodeau, of Chelsea, and Martha Emmons, of Richmond; brother, John Wallace, of Richmond; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; cousin, Irene Morrison, of Ireland; sister-in-law, Katherine Dunn, of Arizona; several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 17, at Pioneer Cemetery, Bowdoinham, with Fr. Bruce Alexander, of St. Matthias Episcopal Church, officiating. An Enterprise Grange service will be presented at 11 a.m. In Emily's memory, donations may be made to St. Matthias Episcopal Church of Richmond, c/o Fr. Bruce Alexander, 292 Alexander Road, Dresden.

Arrangements are under the care of Kincer Funeral Home, 14 South Pleasant St., Richmond.

Irene Levasseur

LEWISTON — Mrs. Irene (Grondin) Levasseur, 80, of Lewiston and Edgewater Colony, South Harpswell, died Monday evening, Nov. 13, 2000, following a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Hallowell, Oct. 16, 1920, the daughter of Henry and Lena (Rancourt) Grondin, and was educated in Lewiston schools, graduating from Lewiston High School in 1937.

On June 29, 1946, she married Carroll E. Levasseur, who was a Fuller Brush salesman and former president of the Auburn Federal Credit Union. He died Oct. 17, 1976.

Mrs. Levasseur was employed locally for many years as a bookkeeper at Peck's Department Store, Bates Mill, Hood's Mailing & Printing, Hillcrest Farm, the former Value House store, and The Mill Fabric Outlet, from which she retired in 1990. In her later years, she also worked as an assistant purchaser in retail.

She was also a volunteer at St. Mary's Hospital for more than 20 years, accumulating more than 3,000 hours of service.

Mrs. Levasseur was a member of St. Joseph's Church, St. Joseph's Queens Guild Sodality, Holy Cross Senior Citizens, St. Mary's Auxilliary, Horizons 55, Covenant 50, and was a former member of the Altrusa Club.

She loved playing cards with "the girls" on Saturday nights, and enjoyed the ocean, traveling, summer theatre at Bowdoin College, and knitting and sewing.

She was predeceased by a son-in-law, John Thomas, in 1996.

Mrs. Levasseur is survived by a daughter Theresa Thomas, of Durham; sons Robert, and his wife, Amy, of Cape Elizabeth, Roger, and his wife, Lynda, of New Gloucester, and Richard, and his wife, Denise, of Windham; a granddaughter, Leah Durgin; grandsons Chad Levasseur, Michael and Brent Thomas, and Andre and Jay Levasseur; a stepgranddaughter, Bianca Vanderpool; a stepgrandson, Orville Vanderpool; a great-granddaughter, Emily Durgin; a great-grandson, Taylor Levasseur; sisters, Priscilla Roux, of Newburyport, Mass., Louise Cormier, and her husband, Henry, of Auburn, and Anita Lacoste, and her husband, Larry, of Sabattus; brothers, Richard Grondin, and his wife, Jeannine, of Lewiston, and Leo Grondin, and his wife, Gin, of Bridgton.

Visiting hours are 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, at The Fortin Group Funeral Homne, Turner and Center Sts., Auburn. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 17, at St. Joseph's Church. Committal will be in St. Peter's Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph's School Tuition Assistance Fund, 393 Main St., Lewiston, or Blessed Katharine Drexel Church, Building Fund, c/o St. Charles Borromeo Church, 132 McKeen St. Brunswick, 04011-2980.

Sherry A. Gilley

SIDNEY — Sherry A. Gilley, 58, of Deer Run Ridge, died unexpectedly Nov. 13, 2000, at her home.

She was born in Augusta, Sept. 5, 1942, the daughter of Roger Cote and Leora E. (Ireland) Cote.

Mrs. Gilley was a homemaker most of her life.

She attended St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, in Augusta, and was a member of Goodwill Grange, of Chelsea.

Surviving are her husband of 35 years, Robert W. Gilley Sr., of Sidney; two sons, Robert W. Gilley Jr., of Bellingham, Mass., and Scott W. Gilley, of Florida; five daughters, Cynthia Gannon, of Mendon, Mass., Linda Marie Slowy, of Oxford, Mass., Deidre Gilley and Melissa McCormick, both of Franklin, Mass., and Lora Lee Gilley, of Milford, Mass.; one brother, Barry Cote, of Augusta; two sisters, Dawn Smith, of New York, and Nancy Gerrier, of Augusta; 15 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours are 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Western Avenue, Augusta. Burial will follow, in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Old Belgrade Road, Augusta.

Isabelle R. Croxford

CAPE ELIZABETH — Isabelle Robinson Croxford, 90, of Cape Elizabeth, formerly of Fir Hollow Road, Pemaquid, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, at a Cape Elizabeth nursing home.

She was born in Pemaquid, a daughter of Veysey and Ethel Lindsey Robinson. The family later moved to Old Town, where her father was principal of the high school from which she graduated in 1928.

She then attended the University of Maine, graduating cum laude, in 1932, with a bachelor's degree.

Mrs. Croxford was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority, Phi Beta Kappa, and Phi Sigma Phi. Returning to the University after graduation, she taught English there for a year while studying for a master's degree.

She married Horace A. Croxford, June 11, 1933. Mr. Croxford passed away Oct. 20, 2000, of this year.

Mrs. Croxford had been affiliated with the American Association of University Women, and local, state and national teachers associations. She served as librarian at Cony High School, in Augusta, and in the Bangor and Old Town High Schools.

She was a member of the Methodist Church, in New Harbor, and belonged to Fortnightly Club, of Round Pond, the Neighborly Club, of Pemaquid, and the Willing Workers, of New Harbor.

She retired to Pemaquid in 1972, spending winters thereafter at Zephyrhills, Fla.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Wayne (Betsy) Ross, of South Portland; one sister, Mrs. Andrew (Mabel) Watson, of Zephyrhills, Fla.; two grandchildren, Anne Ross-Murray, of Portland, and Steven W. Ross, of Falmouth; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Bristol Area Library, Bristol, 04539, or a charity of choice.

There will be no visiting hours. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, at New Harbor Cemetery, Bristol.

Arrangements are by Hobbs Funeral Home, South Portland.

Lila Maude Jackson

AUGUSTA — Lila Maude (Badershall) Jackson, 67, of Old Belgrade Road, passed on peacefully at her home in the company of her husband of 51 years, Ray Jackson, and family members. She made the journey to be with the Lord and all her loved ones before her.

She was born Feb. 11, 1933, in Augusta, the daughter of Roger Badershall and Alice Maude (Larrabee) Badershall.

Lila received great satisfaction from helping her children and grandchildren through life's journey. It would take a book to list all her qualities. She was a very unique loving wife and devoted mother of seven children, and a kind and caring person who was loved by all who knew her. She was known as Ma, Grammy, Gram, Nana, Sis, Aunt Lila, and as a second mother and friend to many. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

She enjoyed writing to her pen pals, collecting cookbooks and recipes, cooking and going to family gatherings, lawn sales and fairs. She also received great joy from spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Lila was predeceased by her parents, Roger Badershall and Alice (Larrabee) Badershall Cady; stepfather, Phil Cady; and brothers, Fred and Larry Badershall.

Lila is survived by her beloved husband, Ray Jackson, of Augusta; three sons, Donald A. Jackson, and his wife, Victoria, of Mount Vernon, David W. Jackson, and his wife, Sheryl, of Chelsea, and Joseph R. Jackson, and his wife, Stacy, of Readfield; four daughters, Alice E., and her husband, Paul Bernier, of Augusta, Dorothy M., and her husband, Robert Kanaris Jr., Joanne R., and her husband, Paul Allen, and Mary B., and her husband, John Willette, all of Mount Vernon; a sister, Dorothy Morang, of Pittston; a brother, Roger Badershall, and his wife, Elaine, of Augusta; 10 grandsons, 11 granddaughters, two great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends and relatives may visit 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, where a celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, with Rev. John L. Dunn Sr. officiating. Spring burial, will be in Kling Cemetery, Augusta.

Donations may be made in her memory to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 31160, Hartford, Conn., 06150-1160.

William 'Billy' Alan Staples

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — William "Billy" Alan Staples, 35, of Kissimmee, died suddenly Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at Kissimmee.

He was born in Augusta, Maine, May 17, 1965, the son of Robert C. and Cecile (Lambert) Staples, and attended local schools.

He was an iron worker for several years, in Flagstaff, Ariz., before moving to Florida in 1994.

Billy loved motorcycling, and was a member of the Osceola Riders Club, in Florida.

He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Cecile and Gerard Pare, of West Gardiner, Maine; one son, Timmy Nowlin, of Winslow, Maine; his paternal stepgrandmother, Hazel Staples, of Mount Vernon, Maine; and his companion, Randi Howard, of Kissimmee.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorials in Billy's name may be made to a charity of choice.

Arrangements are under the care of Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta.

Ronald C. Sutter Sr.

WEST GARDINER — Ronald C. Sutter Sr., 55, of Ronnie Street, died suddenly Monday evening, Feb. 5, 2001, at the MaineGeneral Medical Center emergency room, Augusta.

He was born in Gardiner, May 20, 1945, the son of Percy and Myrtle Harriman Sutter.

Ron was employed for 25 years at Bath Iron Works as a welder.

He devoted his time to his family, especially to his grandson. He loved to have pillow fights with Ronnie.

Ron was predeceased by his parents, and his son, Ronald C. Sutter Jr., Oct. 22, 1985.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Brenda Bodge Sutter, of West Gardiner; two daughters, Ronnette, and her husband, Gary Partridge, of Litchfield, and Paula Gravelle, of West Gardiner; his son, Paul Sutter, of Portland; three brothers, Donald Sutter, of West Gardiner, Timothy Sutter, of Augusta, and Calvin Sutter, of Wiscasset; his sister, Janice Butler, of West Gardiner; one grandson, Ronnie Partridge; several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

Visiting hours are 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner, where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8. Spring burial will be in the family lot, in Ripps Cemetery, West Gardiner.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the American Diabetes Association Maine Affiliate, P.O. Box 2208, Augusta 04338.
