Edward Stephen "Steve" Murray

CUMBERLAND FORESIDE — Edward Stephen Murray, 59, a prominent Portland lawyer and longtime Cumberland municipal official, died at his home Saturday, March 31, 2001.

For the last two years, he had waged a courageous battle with brain cancer, a disease he was diagnosed with in February 1999. "He was determined to maintain a positive attitude about his illness and live life to the fullest as long as he could," said his wife of 38 years, Carolyn Murray. "His partners, many colleagues, friends, doctors and family members marveled at the dignity and determination with which he approached his illness."

Murray was born in Arlington, Mass., in 1941. He graduated from Arlington High School and worked his way through Harvard College, earning his undergraduate degree in 1963. During law school, he worked at the U.S. Bureau of Customs, beginning a lifelong tradition of service in the public sector. He graduated in 1968 from Georgetown University Law Center.

Following his graduation, he and Carolyn returned to her home state of Maine, and he joined the law firm of Drummond, Wescott & Woodsum.

In 1970, Murray became an assistant attorney general in the administration of Gov. Kenneth M. Curtis and under Attorney General James Erwin. There he had primary responsibility for environmental matters and represented the Department of Environmental Protection, Department of Conservation, Land Use Regulatory Commission, State Planning Office, Department of Marine Resources, Department of Parks and Recreation, Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, and Baxter Park Authority. He was instrumental in drafting and defending new laws on land use, clean air, clean water, and freedom of information.

In 1973, he co-founded the Portland law firm known as Murray, Plumb & Murray, along with Peter Plumb and Peter Murray (not related). He concentrated his practice in environmental law and regulation, municipal law, and general advice to his many clients. He served as the firm's managing partner and remained a senior partner until his retirement last year. "Steve exemplified the best in lawyering skills — a strong analytical and advocacy ability blended with the capacity to give compassion and common sense advice to his clients," said Peter Murray.

Murray's interest in and commitment to politics and municipal governance ran very deep. He served on the Cumberland Town Council for 12 years, five years as its chairman, and on many municipal committees and state commissions. In 1998, he ran as a Republican for the Maine Senate, missing by just a few hundred votes against a state representative. "Steve gained much from and liked the experience of campaigning," said his wife. "He loved going from door to door, meeting and talking with local people." He also served on a variety of non-profit boards, including as trustee of the former Brighton Medical Center, and at his death, as chairman of the 75 State Street elder residential facility.

"Steve Murray always had a commanding presence," said partner Peter Plumb. "With his handsome, tall, and erect posture, engaging and warm personality and that enormous head of gray hair, he was a statesmanlike figure, as I am sure his many clients and friends would agree."

For many years, Murray was an active communicant and lay participant at Holy Martyrs Church, in Falmouth, where his duties ranged from teaching Sunday school to heading up the Stewardship Appeal.

The Murrays raised three daughters. One of his greatest pleasures was introducing his daughters to the beauty of Maine through camping and hiking trips. His role as grandfather in recent years gave him great pleasure and pride.

Murray's favorite place was Baxter State Park and Mount Katahdin. He was an enthusiastic student of the writings of Gov. Percival Baxter, and spent a significant part of his legal career defending and promoting the instructions left by Gov. Baxter for the care and maintenance of the park.

His family has asked that in lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in his memory to the Baxter State Park Donation Account, 64 Balsam Drive, Millinocket 04462.

He is survived by his wife, the former Carolyn Bird, of Cumberland Foreside; his three daughters, Christine "Cricket" Nickerson, and her husband, Scott, of San Antonio, Texas, Andrea Murray, and her husband, Ben Campo, of Cumberland Foreside, and Rebecca Murray, of Oakland, Calif.; his mother, Henrietta Murray, of Lexington, Mass.; his three brothers, Robert Murray, of Lunenburg, Mass., Charles Murray, of Westwood, Mass., and Richard Murray, of Ballinasloe, County Galway, Ireland; and three grandchildren, Corey, Alicia and Clarissa.

There will be no visiting hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, at Holy Martyrs Church, 266 Foreside Road, Falmouth, with Monsignor Murphy, celebrant. Internment will be private.

Funeral arrangements are by Jones, Rich and Hutchins Funeral Directors, Portland.

Todd Anthony Bernier

WINTHROP — On Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, Todd Anthony Bernier, son of Roland P. Bernier and Patricia A. (Ward) Bernier, was surrounded by those who loved him, when his battle with cancer ended at the young age of 27. Those present with him at that moment were his entire immediate family and a few of his closest friends.

Todd was born Jan. 30, 1974, and he lived most of his life in Winthrop. He had attended the local high school, but graduated from Cony High School in 1993 after transferring to continue his football career. Already a rising star on the Winthrop team, he became a defensive machine on the Cony team, amassing the most tackles for the year in a shortened season, because of transferring, and earned himself the Most Valuable Defensive Player Award for the 1992 season.

He was diagnosed in the summer of 1999 with terminal cancer after being undiagnosed for a few years because of his age. Colon cancer is most likely to affect only those nearly twice his age and was not considered to be the source of his pain until it was too late. He was struck down in the prime of his life because he didn't fit the profile of a typical patient who would have this curse of cancer, once again because of his age.

"Listen to your body and if it is telling you something is wrong, but the doctor is saying nothing is wrong ... find a new doctor." This was Todd's response to most people who asked him about his illness, and of course, that was always followed by, "I'm fine...doin' good," no matter how much pain he was in at that time.

Todd was predeceased by his eldest brother, Roland P. Bernier Jr., and his maternal grandparents, Patrick H. Ward and Gladys Donaghy-Ward, paternal grandparent, Roger O. Bernier, all of Winthrop.

He leaves his parents of Winthrop; four brothers, Timothy and Christopher, both of Winthrop, Shawn, and his wife, Kimberly, of Wayne, and Benjamin, of League City, Texas; his maternal uncle, Raymond Ward, and son, Jacob, of Winthrop; paternal grandmother, Dora Fleury-Bernier; an aunt, Barbara Corson, her son, Mark Corson, and her daughter, Michelle Rice, all of Bangor; two nieces, Ashley and Cassandra Bernier, of Wayne, who lit up his life; his close friends, Patrick Higgins and Darcy (Dunn) Baird, and his faithful companion, Kanoda, his dog; lastly, his newly acquired friends, the Bradstreets, of Winthrop, especially the mother, Kathy. All three friends were present and by his side at the end.

Todd had a love for nature and the outdoors, especially ice fishing. He could see things in the woods that others did not see. He had a special love for animals, old people and little children. People were drawn to his warm smile. He will leave a hole in many lives, but his fight is now over.

Relatives and friends are invited to call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, at the Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, where a service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, with Elder Jan Saleeby, of the local congregations of Jehovah's Witnesses, officiating.

The family suggests those who wish may make donations in Todd's memory to the Johns Hopkins Cancer Research Center, Baltimore MD; or the Jimmy Fund.
