Ernest "Ernie" James Porter Sr.

HOT SPRINGS, S.D. — Ernest "Ernie" James Porter Sr., 92, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2001, at the Department of Veteran Affairs, Fort Meade.

He was born in Middleboro, Mass., Jan. 27, 1909, the son of Annie Elizabeth (Ridgeway) Porter and James Porter.

Ernie entered the Army in June, 1943, as a truck driver for heavy equipment. He was stationed in Africa and Europe during World War II, and received numerous decorations and citations, including Good Conduct Medal GO 132, ASF WDPC FSC 45, European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon with bronze service Arrowhead, and the Distinguished Unit Badge GO 95 Hq 5gth Army 44.

Discharged from Company C 48th Engineer Battalion in August 1945, Ernie continued to drive trucks for White Trucking Co., West Bridgewater, Mass., for 21 years. After moving to Maine, he worked as a nurses' aide at the Augusta Mental Health Institute, retiring in 1974 after 20 years.

Ernie married Eleanor Fay Porter in 1971, and they lived in Maine until 1976, when they moved to New Smyrna Beach, Fla. After Eleanor's death in 1989, Ernie moved back to Maine to be closer to his brother, Clifford Porter, of Waldoboro, and his son, Ernest James Porter Jr., and family. He lived in Maine until 1999, moving to Hot Springs, to be closer to his granddaughter, Deborah Gorman, and her husband, Joseph Gorman, and great-granddaughter, Meagan Gorman.

Ernie had a passion and love for life that was evident in everything he did. He loved people, traveling and good food. He was a member of the South Somerville Baptist Church in Somerville, Maine, and the Calvary Baptist Church in Hot Springs.

He is survived by his brother, Clifford Porter of Waldoboro; two granddaughters, Deborah Gorman, and her husband, Joseph, of Hot Springs, and Loretta Kilgore, and her husband, Wayne, of Farmingdale, Maine; two great-granddaughters, Dawn (Kilgore) Morin, and her husband, Andre, of Sidney, Maine, and Meagan Gorman, of Hot Springs; one great-great-granddaughter, Aurora Rose Morin, of Sidney; one great-grandson, David Kilgore, of Farmingdale; two daughters, Ruth Southworth, of New Hampshire, and Shirley Boynton, of South China. He also is survived by several stepdaughters, stepsons, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be at 9 a.m., Friday, Aug. 10, the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Veterans Affairs Black Hills Health Care System of South Dakota or the Hot Springs Volunteer Ambulance Service.

Local arrangements are under the care of Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta.

Dorothee "Dottie" Beland

AUGUSTA — Dorothee "Dottie" Beland, 82, of Augusta, died Sunday Aug.5, 2001, at the Glenridge Nursing Home.

She was born in Augusta, Jan. 26, 1919, the daughter of George Poulin and Angelina (Boucher) Poulin.

She graduated from Cony High School and had lived in the Augusta area all her life. She was a communicant of St. Mary's Parish.

Dottie had worked for the state of Maine until her retirement. She enjoyed playing golf and swimming.

She was predeceased by her parents and a daughter.

She is survived by a nephew, Lewis Poulin, of Seattle, Wash., and a niece, Theresa Landry, of Lewiston.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call 7-9 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 7 Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Friday Aug. 10, at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Western Avenue, Augusta, with the Rev. Michael Gendreau officiating. Interment will follow at St. Augustine Cemetery.

Philip Neal Hills

AUGUSTA — Philip Neal Hills, 80, of Macomber Street, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at the Maine Veterans' Home, Augusta.

He was born in Portland, March 4, 1921, the son of Lawrence and Marion Hills.

He attended schools in Portland, Augusta and New Hampshire.

Mr. Hills served with the Navy during World War II, in both the Mediterranean and Pacific Theatre as a PT boat gunner's mate.

He worked for Central Maine Power Co. for 38 years, starting as a ground man and working his way up to Division Line supervisor. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and his hobbies included buying automobiles.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Betty Royce Hills, of Augusta; one son, David Hills, of Augusta; three granddaughters, Amy Yancey, of South Carolina, and Samantha Hills and Megan Hills, both of Winthrop.

He was predeceased by a son, Stephen, A. Hills, in 1996; two brothers, G. Arnold Hills and N. Stephen Hills; and two sisters, Ellen Galbraith and Alice Legge.

There will be no visiting hours. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10, at Mount Cemetery, Augusta. Rev. Michael Davis, pastor of the Green Street United Methodist Church will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta.

Laura M. Dupont

HALLOWELL — Laura M. Dupont, 101, recipient of the Boston Post Cane this year as the oldest resident in Hallowell, died early Tuesday morning, Oct. 16, 2001, at her daughter's home, in Hallowell.

She attended schools in Hamlin.

She was a housewife most of her life, busy raising her 10 children. For the last 32 years, she had resided with her daughter and son-in-law, Sylvia and Richard Fortin, at 94 Second St.

Mrs. Dupont was a devout Catholic and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Hallowell, for more than 30 years. She was also a member of the Ladies of St. Anne at St. Bruno's in Van Buren.

Laura enjoyed playing cards, dancing and flower gardening. She also loved baking, embroidering, knitting and sewing.

She was predeceased by her first husband and father of her 10 children, Frank Labrecque, her second husband, Ben Gagnon, and her third husband, Frederick Dupont; three sons, Louis, Edward, and Loomis Labrecque; and a daughter, Ester Fascione.

She leaves behind three sons, Nelson and Percy Labrecque, of South Windsor, Conn., and Philip Labrecque, of Claremont, N.H.; three daughters, Rose Pelletier, of Limestone, Carlene Maynard, of Washburn, and Sylvia Fortin of Hallowell; stepbrothers, stepsisters, 40 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Friends and relatives are invited to visit 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 68 Second St., Hallowell. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Hallowell, with Rev. George Hickey, celebrant. Burial will follow in Hallowell Cemetery.

For those who wish, contributions in Mrs. Dupont's memory may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 12 Summer St., Hallowell 04347, or to HealthReach Hospice, P.O. Box 1568, Waterville 04903-1568.

Dacey service

AUGUSTA — A Mass of Christian burial for Ola C. Dacey, who died Oct. 11, 2001, was celebrated Monday afternoon at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Augusta, with Rev. Michael Gendreau, pastor, officiating. Altar servers were Raymond Delorme and Dr. Henry Ryan. Organist and soloist was Michael Gervais.

The first reading was by grandniece Kristina Caruso and the second reading by grandniece Jennifer Brady. Remembrances were offered by niece Marguerite Swift Dubosque.

There were representatives from the church, National Association of Retired Federal Employees and St. Mary's Guild.

Pallbearers, all members of Abnaki Council 334, Knights of Columbus Pallbearers Association, were Paul Gilbert, Ernest Morisette, J. Leo Lachance, Rodney Waldron, Peter Grenier and Norman Tondreau. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Augusta, where Rev. Gendreau offered committal prayers.

Arrangements were by Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.

Roland M. Berry

1914-2002

HALLOWELL — Roland M. Berry, 87, of Maple Street, Hallowell, died Monday April 1, 2002, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.

He was born in Dexter, Sept. 2, 1914, a son of Delbert and Sadie Leathers Berry.

Roland had been employed by the state Department of Finance and Administration for 25 years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a long-time member of the American Legion.

He loved to play golf and was a former member of the Augusta Country Club.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Cole Berry of Hallowell; his daughter, Judith Lapham of Hallowell; two grandchildren, Jennifer Heneberry of Waltham, Mass., and Jeff Lapham of Hudson, N.H.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

At his request there will be no service. Burial will be in the new Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Augusta.

Arrangements are in the care of Staples Funeral Home, Gardiner.

Carolyn Boston Bonney

1915-2002

SACO — Carolyn Boston Bonney, 86, of Saco, passed away unexpectedly at her residence on April 1, 2002.

She was born in Alfred, May 2, 1915, the daughter of Peter and Caroline Boston.

She was orphaned at an early age, and Mr. and Mrs. Harry L. Smith became her legal guardians. Mrs. Smith was the sister of Peter Boston. She was a graduate of Thornton Academy in 1933, Westbrook Junior College and the Katharine Gibbs School. She served on her Thornton Academy high school class reunion committee until her death.

She lived at various times in Maine, Massachusetts and Connecticut. During that time, she raised twin sons, volunteered in civic groups and performed in local stage plays. She was an exceptionally avid reader and was cited during National Literacy Week in the Portland Press Herald and interviewed on television for reading more than 400 books from the Dyer Library in Saco. She retained much of the information she gleaned from her reading and was conversant on a wide range of topics and geography. She had a good sense of humor and always enjoyed a good joke. A person of many interests, she was a pianist, artist and bridge player. She was an active member of the Educational and Industrial Union in Saco.

She is survived by her sons, Charles Bonney and his wife, Sharon, of Wayne, and William Bonney and his wife, Nina, of Pembroke, N.H., a brother, Raymond Smith and his wife, Betty, of Oakland; her sister Ester Dolby and her husband, Lawrence, of Saco; her brother, Harry Smith and his wife, of Joan, also of Saco; her grandson, Charles Bonney II and his wife, Annie, of Brookline, Mass.; her granddaughter, Sarah Lapides and her husband, Matthew, also of Brookline; her granddaughter, Tippany Murphy, her husband, John and their infant son, Noah, of Dracut, Massachusetts; her grandson Jeffrey Bonney of Gloucester, New Jersey; a niece, Millie Szuksta of Lowell, Mass., and many other nieces and nephews.

A gathering of family and friends will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 6, at the Dyer Library, Deering Wing.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Dyer Library, 371 Main St., Saco 04072.

Arrangements are in the care of Dennett, Craig & Pate Funeral Home, Buxton.

Herman J. Grover

1922-2002

GARDINER — Herman J. Grover, 79, of Costello Road, Gardiner, died unexpectedly Monday, April 1, 2002, at the home of his long-time friend, Virginia Jewett.

He was born in Wiscasset, Nov. 24, 1922, a son of Fred and Lena Lake Grover. Herm was a graduate of Wiscasset High School.

He was employed for a short time at Bath Iron Works as a machinist's apprentice, and for 40 years at Yorktowne Paper Mill, retiring in 1987.

He enjoyed sports and coached many years for the Little League and American Legion baseball teams and the church basketball league. He was a 50-year member, a deacon and Sunday school teacher at Winter Street Baptist Church in Gardiner.

He enjoyed reading, especially his Bible, following the University of Maine sports teams and baseball. He played minor league baseball for the Boston Red Sox organization and for professional teams in New York and Canada.

His first wife, Geraldine Chase Grover, his second wife, Louise Hagerman Grover, three brothers and three sisters predeceased him.

Survivors include his long-time best friend, Virginia M. Jewett of Gardiner; four children, James F. Grover and his wife, Bonnie, of Augusta, Bonnie J. Babb and her husband, Frank, of Lewiston, Steve Grover and his wife, Debi, of Monmouth, and David J. Grover of Gardiner; nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Winter Street Baptist Church in Gardiner. Burial will be in the family lot in Oak Grove Cemetery Gardiner. A reception will be held in the church hall following the service.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Winter Street Baptist Church Memorial Fund in his memory.
