He was born in Augusta, Maine, Feb. 22, 1954.

Robert O.E. Elliot

2002

KENNEBUNK — Robert O. E. Elliot, 99, died early Sunday morning, July 28, 2002, at his home in Kennebunk.

He was born in Hyde Park, Mass., and spent a good part of his youth in Woolwich. Moving to Hampton, N.H., he graduated from Hampton Academy and went to Boston University to study journalism. In 1925, he married Annie Colwell of Hyde Park and they moved to Hampton, where they lived when he worked on the Hampton Union newspaper, the Boston Herald-Traveler and Portsmouth Herald.

While in New Hampshire, he wrote a rod and gun column for the Portsmouth Herald and did fish and game publicity for the state of New Hampshire. In 1946, he moved to Augusta and took a job as director of recreational promotion for the Maine Development Commission.

He worked for several state agencies, including Inland Fisheries & Wildlife, retiring in 1971 as director of travel and tourism for the state Department of Economic Development.

Through those years, Mr. Elliot continued as a prolific free-lance writer, photojournalist and author. He published a wide variety of books, including "The Eastern Brook Trout," "All About Trout," "Bass Fishing in New England," "Salmon Fishing in New England," "Trout from Maine to California" and "The Making of an Angler." He also published more than 100 articles in national publications such as Field and Stream; Outdoor Life; Sports Afield; True; Argosy; Fur, Fish and Game; and others.

He was contributing editor for Field and Stream for several years.

Mr. Elliot was a lifetime member of the New England Outdoor Writers Association, serving on its board of directors. He was a past master of the Augusta Lodge 141, AF&AM, and a member of Kora Temple Shrine, Lewiston. He also was a member of the Maine Association of Retirees. He received the Silver Trout award from Trout Unlimited.

Bob's love of fishing and Maine's outdoors were surpassed only by his love and devotion to his wife and family. He spent many happy hours in the field pursuing his passions — fly fishing, hunting upland birds and golfing.

A son, Harvey Elliott; brothers John and Ben; and sisters Alice and Mae predeceased him.

Surviving are his loving wife of 77 years, Annie, of Kennebunk; a daughter, Mary Ann Rico and her husband, Enrique, of Houston; two sons, Neil of McMinnville, Ore., and Dale of Mount Vernon; one brother, Bill Elliot and his wife, Alzena, of Hampton, N.H.; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside committal will be held at 2 p.m. Aug. 17, at Pine Grove Cemetery, Belgrade.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Theodora 'Teddy' Lee Levy

1951-2002

OAK BLUFFS, Mass. —Teddy Levy, of 66 High St., Winthrop, Maine, passed away unexpectedly Friday, July 26, 2002, while vacationing with friends on Cape Cod.

Teddy was born in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Dec. 16, 1951, the daughter of Diane and the late William Smithgall. She lived in several towns in New York state, graduating from Berlin High School in Berlin, N.Y., in 1970.

She moved to Maine in 1977, settling in the old Maxwell farmhouse (always a work in progress), where she raised not only her own children but touched the lives of numerous others with her Teddy Bear Day Care. Most recently, she worked for Sage Dining Services at Kents Hill School, a job she truly loved because she got to "mother" a bunch of kids again.

Teddy also worked as a waitress in several area restaurants and was a manager at Sally's Steakhouse. She met the love of her life while working at the Senator Inn, and Norm and Teddy were married in December 1980. They spent countless hours together touring the state, from the western mountains to the bays and beaches, all up and down the coast, particularly Popham Beach, which held a special place in her heart.

Teddy was a tireless worker, well known for her tremendous work ethic. But more than anything, she loved a good time. She was always the life of any party. Whether it was a fraternity get-together, a family reunion or a wedding, you could hear Teddy from anywhere in the room, and if there was music, you would always find her on the dance floor.

Teddy loved to cook and watch people eat, especially her family. Her Thanksgiving spreads were legendary.

She will be sadly and forever missed by her husband, Norman of Winthrop; her two children, Garrett of Boulder, Colo., and Esther of Bangor, Maine; her mother, Diane Smithgall of Winthrop; her sister, Gail Smithgall of Readfield, Maine; her brothers, Frank Smithgall of Winthrop and Howard Smithgall and his wife, Brenda, and their children, Nathan and Glen, of Lochbuie, Colo.; a special aunt, Audrey Roesel of Winthrop; and her dear uncle, Steve Jones and his wife, Joann, of Highland Village, Texas, and Harpswell, Maine.

Teddy dearly loved and was loved by her in-laws, Frank and Ann Rowe of South Thomaston, Maine; her sisters-in-law, Kristina Rowe of North Fort Meyers, Fla., Frances Daley and her husband, Thomas, and their daughter, Isabel, of New Haven, Conn., Cheryl Rowe-Deroche and her husband, Peter, and their children, Gabe, Aleda and Annie, of Toronto, Ontario; her great friend, Lois Feith of Winthrop; and numerous cousins and friends throughout the Northeast and Colorado.

In accordance with Teddy's wishes, there will be no funeral. However, there will be a celebration of Teddy's life at our house on High Street at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 31.

Please, in lieu of flowers, send a donation in Teddy's name to the American Heart Association, 343 Gorham Road, South Portland 04106.
