Barbara C. Thomas

1929-2002

LIBERTY — Barbara C. Thomas, 72, of Liberty, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

She was born in Liberty, Nov. 27, 1929, a daughter of Clyde and Iva (Fuller) Bachelor.

She graduated from Camden High School, class of 1947. In 1953 she married Maurice P. Thomas, and they resided in Littleton, Colo., for 37 years. In 1998 they moved back to Maine and made their home in Liberty.

She was predeceased by one brother, Edwin Bachelor.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Maurice P. Thomas of Liberty; four children, Wayne Thomas of Middletown, N.J., Judith Aguilar of Littleton, Jayne Moore of Vermillion, S.D., and John Thomas of Walsenburg, Colo.; one sister, Madeleine Haskell of Palermo; and 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, Gray Chapel, Windsor Neck Road, Windsor, with the Rev. Edward L. Heath officiating. Burial will follow at the Morrill Village Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Brain Injury Rehab Center, 74 Parkway St., Brewer 04412.

Arrangements are in the are of Lawry Brothers Funeral Home.

Claire C. Wallace

1926-2002

LEWISTON — Claire C. Wallace, 76, of 307 Cressey Road, Monmouth, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center following a long illness.

She was born in Lawrence, Mass., Feb. 14, 1926, the daughter of Louis and Elizabeth (Casey) Cyr, and had been a resident of this community for the past 40 years.

Mrs. Wallace enjoyed camping and fishing with her husband in her earlier years. She also enjoyed her grandchildren and her dog, Cubby.

She is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Dumont and her companion, Ed Merrill, of Monmouth, and Pam Caron of Lewiston; one half brother, Michael Cyr of Corinna; one half sister, Charlotte Nye and her husband, Orlin, of Corinna; five grandchildren, Paul J. Salley, James Renaud, Robert Dumont, Brittney Salley and Tyler Salley; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Walter H. Salley, who died in 1967, and her recent husband, Ralph "Pop" Wallace, who died in 1993; and by her three sons, J. Douglas, David L. and Peter L. Salley.

A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, at the Corinthian Cemetery in East Corinth. At her request, there will be no visitation.

Arrangements are by Pinette Funeral Home.

Edwin Fuller Whitney

2002

CAPE ELIZABETH — Edwin Fuller Whitney, 82, of Cape Elizabeth died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, in Cape Elizabeth.

He was born in Portland, the son of Albert and Mildred Fuller Whitney.

He was a graduate of Deering High School. Following high school, he worked for Maine Central Railroad until his enlistment in the 240th Coast Artillery Band on Nov. 7, 1938. He served in Europe as part of the European Theater of Operations while assigned to the 220th General Hospital in France. He returned to the United States and was honorably discharged from active duty in April 1946. He resumed his Army National Guard affiliation by enlisting as master sergeant in headquarters in South Portland in April 1947. Having completed more than 38 years of service in the Army and the Army National Guard, Col. Edwin Fuller Whitney retired with the grade of brigadier general, Maine National Guard (retired). During his lengthy career, he earned the following awards: the Legion of Merit, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle-Eastern Medal, World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with two hourglass devices, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal with one oak leaf cluster, and the Maine Honorable Service Medal with two 10-year devices.

Following his retirement, Edwin became deeply involved in working with stained glass. He was a lifelong member of the Unity Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and a member of the American Society of Military Comptrollers.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Mildred M. Laukaitis; a son, Kenneth C. Whitney and his wife, Judith E. Harper; his brother, George Whitney of Portland, a sister, Barbara Whitney of Brunswick; and two nephews and one grandnephew.

Visiting hours are 10-11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 29, at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland, with a memorial service to follow at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Brooklawn Memorial Park.

Leona Mae Dennett Smith

1904-2003

AUGUSTA — Leona Mae Dennett Smith, 98, of Augusta, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at the Augusta Rehabilitation Center, following a long illness.

She was born in Scarborough, March 24, 1904, the daughter of Leon and Emelyn (Milliken) Dennett.

Mrs. Smith was a very active member of the community. She loved serving and helping many organizations, including the Kennebec Valley Garden Club, the Republican Women's Club, the Augusta Women's club, the Order of Rebekahs and the Green Street United Methodist Church. During World War II, she was active in the Red Cross and received their medal for excellence.

Leona was a familiar sight on her porch at 28 Davenport St., where she was often called the "Mayor of Davenport Street." She was famous for knitting mittens, scarves, sweaters and caps for the children in the neighborhood and for the church. Her porch was a gathering place for children, and they loved sharing their lives, dolls, plays and dances with her. Her cooking featured cookies and her famous "burned carrots."

Mrs. Smith was predeceased by her husband, Carroll Smith; her son, Robert L. Smith; her sister, Marguerite Quimby; and her brothers, Carl, Don, Norman, Gordan and Roland Dennett.

Leona is survived by her daughter, Jean Bache-Wiig and her husband, John; her brother, Stanley Dennett; her grandchildren, Robert L. Smith Jr. and his wife, Ruth, Sharon Carter and her husband, Roger, Mark Smith and his wife, Diane, Terry Smith, Eric Bache-Wiig, Carol Bache-Wiig, Joseph Cloutier, Robert Cloutier, Debby Cloutier and Sherrill Cloutier; and her great-grandchildren, Matthew and Jeffrey Carter, Christopher and Nicole Smith, and Thomas Smith and Cheranne Bennett.

There will be no visiting hours.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, at Green Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jan Davis officiating.

Spring burial will be in Coombs Mills Cemetery, Augusta.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Green Street United Methodist Church Building Fund, 13 Green St., Augusta 04330.

Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, Augusta.

Allen service

A Mass of Christian burial for Gilda M. Allen, who died Jan. 24, 2003, was celebrated Monday morning at St. Augustine Catholic Church with the Rev. Paul Pare, retired, officiating. Altar servers were Donald Brawn and Romeo Tardiff. Organist was David Stewart and soloist was Arthur Pare.

The reading was given by niece Natalie Gaignard, and the Prayer of the Faithful was read by niece Sharon Beaulieu. Taking part in the Offertory Procession were granddaughter Crystal Ladd and niece Diane Pomerleau. Personal remarks were offered by Mrs. Allen's sister, Theresa Bean.

There were representatives from St. Augustine Parish, St. John the Baptist Union of America, and Lapointe Lumber Co.

Pallbearers were grandsons Christopher McCrimmon, Shaun McCrimmon and Mack McCrimmon, along with nephews Lionel Rodrigue, Raymond Rodrigue and David Harriman.

Spring burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, Augusta.

Arrangements were by Plummer Funeral Home, Augusta.

Charles Bader

1915-2003

PERMAQUID POINT —Charles Bader, 87, of Permaquid Point, and Boca Raton, Fla., quietly passed away at his home in Boca Raton on Thursday, April 3, 2003, surrounded by his beloved family.

Born in 1915 in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was a graduate of DeWitt Clinton High School and New York University. He worked as director of the Young Men's Hebrew Association in the greater New York City area for a short time before being drafted by the armed services during World War II. He served with the Air Force in Miami; Alburquerque, N.M.; and Newport Beach, Calif., retiring as a lieutenant colonel.

After the war, he returned to New York City and joined the Veterans Administration. He was transferred to the VA hospital in Togus, where he began his career of 30 years as chief of corrective therapy, retiring in 1977. He also lectured to students at the University of Maine at Orono on entering the profession of physical and corrective therapies.

Mr. Bader married Dorothy Isaacson, from New York City, in 1941 and they were together for 62 years. He was one of the founders of Temple Beth-El Synagogue in Augusta and served a term as its president. He was also active in B'nai Brith.

During retirement, he volunteered with the Big Brothers organization, working with children in physical education. Charles was also an avid golfer.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his son, Lawrence Bader of Overland Park, Kan.; his daughter, Ellen Kandel of Metuchen, N.J.; and his two brothers, Robert and Leslie Bader of Boca Raton, Fla.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 7, at the Levey Chapel, 471 Deering Avenue in Portland. Rabbi Susan Bulba-Carvutto of Temple Beth-El in Augusta officiated at the services. Interment with military honors followed the service at Mount Sinai Cemetery in Portland.

Donations in Charles Bader's memory may be made to the Vitas Hospice Charitable Foundation, 8880 Rio San Diego Drive, Suite 950, San Diego, Calif. 92108. Contributions should be designated for the Palm Beach County Division of Florida.

Barbara Jean Campbell

1939-2003

WALTERS, Okla. — Barbara Jean Campbell, 63, was born to Francis Richard and Millie Marie (Adkins) Oakes in Lawton, Okla., on Sept. 11, 1939, and departed this life in Walters on April 7, 2003, at the age of 63 years, 6 months and 26 days.

Barbara grew up in Lawton. Through the years, she did clerical work for various employers. She married Norman Robert "Bobby" Campbell on Sept. 16, 1985, in Mineral Wells, Texas. They made their home in Lawton until moving to Walters in 1994.

Barbara was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Walters. She enjoyed reading her Bible, attending church and playing cards.

Survivors include her husband, Bobby, of Walters; a son, Orrin Bly of Tennessee; three daughters, Donna Roman and Susan Pueschel, both of Lawton, and Leigh Ann Brann of Maine; two stepsons, Roger Campbell and Richard Campbell, and a stepdaughter, Lisa Rene Stinson, all of Lawton; two brothers, Donnie Oakes of Tucson, Ariz., and Larry Johnsey of Muskogee, Okla.; six grandchildren, Matthew D. Bly, Lauryn Alene Bly, Lei-Lani Marie Roman, Savanah J. Brann, Daulton Riley Brann and Jordan Nickolas Brann; two stepgranddaughters, Chevonne Asenap and Christina Smith; a stepgreat-granddaughter, Katelyn Asenap; other relatives; and many friends.

Funeral services will be conducted from the Hart-Wyatt Funeral Chapel in Walters, 1 p.m. Thursday, April 10, with the Rev. Wade Scott officiating. Burial will occur in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Lawton, under the direction of Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home.

James P. "Jim" Chichetto

1950-2003

ETNA and BANGOR —James P. "Jim" Chichetto died from complications caused by kidney failure at a Bangor hospital on April 6, 2003.

Jim was born June 11, 1950, in Augusta, the third of four children born to James J. and Bernadette A. (Pepin) Chichetto.

The family moved to Hampden in the early 1950s. Jim enjoyed a happy childhood in Hampden and graduated from Hampden Academy in 1968. After working a year, he attended the University of Maine at Orono. While in college, he worked summers as a lineman for New England Telephone. After college he went to work full time for NET and later AT&T. Because of force reductions at AT&T in the 1990s, Jim started his second career with Federal Express and was employed by them at the time of his death.

A motorcyclist for more than 30 years, Jim helped found ABATE of Maine and was active in United Bikers of Maine, serving as an area representative, county director, vice president and president. He also helped found the Maine Motorcyclist PAC and was active in political education and legislation concerning all motorcyclists in Maine. Jim also enjoyed the world of scuba diving; he was a diver for 18 years and enjoyed the ocean and exploring shipwrecks.

Jim also helped re-found the Maine aviation Historical Society in the 1990s and served as vice president and president. During this time, the MAHS started working to establish the Maine Air Museum in Bangor.

Jim loved history and enjoyed living history with the 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry, Company B. He also enjoyed researching mysteries and was working on the "White Bird" at the time of his passing. He enjoyed bushwhacking and hiking the woods of Maine and enjoyed all aspects of nature in Maine.

Jim designed and built his home in Etna and worked on projects in town as they were needed. He helped write the first Comprehensive Plan for the town of Etna, set up the first Planning Board and the Board of Appeals, and was a member of the town Planning Board.

He also helped establish the first recycling program in Etna and was active in school events. Jim enjoyed hunting and fishing, swimming, downhill skiing and water skiing; he enjoyed teaching those sports and others to his son as he grew up.

Jim is survived by his son, James A. Chichetto of Bangor; his three sisters, Carol A. Chichetto of Brewster, Mass., Susan E. Chichetto-Weston of Bath and Mary E. Chichetto of Brewster, Mass. He is also survived by two nieces, Lori Murphy and her husband, Todd, of Rome and LeAnne Broas and her husband, Rick, of Jersey City, N.J. He also leaves behind a special friend and companion, Gale M. Kennedy of Bangor.

"Do not mourn my passing but celebrate my life, my joys were many, my sorrows few. I enjoyed my life and the people I met and the work I took on. I learned what it was to be a son, a husband and a father. To know the joys of being a parent and to deal with the events that life serves up. I had fun and did the things I wanted and was never bored. I am off now on the next great adventure, and will see you all just a bit further down the road of life."

Friends may call 5-8 p.m. Friday, April 11, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where a celebration of his life will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, April 12, with Peter Noddin officiating. Following the memorial service, motorcycle riders will lead the funeral procession to the Maine Air Museum. There will be a short ceremony by the 20th Maine Volunteer Regiment, Company B. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Brookings-Smith Family Center, 163 Center St., Bangor, following the ceremonies. Those who wish to remember Jim in a special way may make gifts in his memory to Simpson Memorial Library, P.O. Box 186, Carmel, 04419.
