Barbara (Randlette) Sousa

1937-2003

HIGGANUM, Conn. —Barbara (Randlette) Sousa, 66, of Morris Road, beloved wife of Paul Sousa, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown.

She was born in Lewiston, Maine, daughter of the late George and Gertrude (Richardson) Randlette. Prior to her retirement, she was employed with McCutcheon Burr and IMI as a claim manager for 18 years.

Besides her husband, she is survived by one son, David Sousa and his wife, Rosemary, of Ivoryton, Conn.; two grandchildren, Eric and Michael Sousa of Ivoryton; one brother, Bradley Randlette of Augusta, Maine; and two sisters, Marsha Cooper of Winthrop, Maine, and Natalie Brann of Clinton, Maine.

A memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 11, at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St., Middletown, Conn. Friends may visit with the family at Biega Funeral Home, 6-7:30 p.m. April 11. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Ira F. Dole

1913-2003

AUGUSTA — Ira Frederic Dole, 89, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.

He lived on Fairview Avenue in Augusta for 46 years prior to his move to Granite Hill Estates in 2000.

He was born in Brewer, Aug. 21, 1913, a son of Eugene Morris Dole and Minnie (Floyd) Dole. He was graduated from Bangor High School in 1932 and the University of Maine at Orono in 1936 with a degree in civil engineering.

In 1939 in Bangor, he married Dorothy Nealey, who predeceased him in 2001.

He worked for Central Maine Power Co. for 33 years and retired in 1978. He was a trustee of South Parish Congregational Church and a member for 50 years and sang with the Lamplighters, a local singing group.

He enjoyed his large family, gardening, tennis and woodworking; and he was an ardent, loyal but frustrated Red Sox fan. He was devoted to his dogs, Newfoundland and others.

He is survived by three daughters, Nancy Curtin and her husband, Richard, of Sanibel, Fla., and West Gardiner; Judith Byers and her husband, John, of Sanford, N.C.; and Jean Goodwin and her husband, Tom, of Naples, Fla. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Jill Goodwin Brown, Amie Goodwin Guindon, Scott Goodwin, Petty Officer 1st Class Geoffrey Byers, Andrew Byers, Dana Curtin Granados, Richard Curtin Jr., Andrew Curtin, Karen Curtin Voorhees, Kathryn Curtin, Brian Curtin and Elizabeth Curtin Hayes; and 12 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother, Floyd Dole of Bangor.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 31, at South Parish Congregational Church, 9 Church St., Augusta.

Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, Augusta.

Frances Nelson Fink

SCARBOROUGH —Frances Nelson Fink, of 15 Estate Dr., died Monday, May 26, 2003, at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough.

She was born in Augusta, the daughter of Roland and Beatrice Colfer Nelson. She graduated from Portland High School and the University of Maine.

Mrs. Fink taught English and history at Portland High School in the mid-1940s and later in Lewiston schools and at Mid-State College.

For more than 30 years, she was a legislative advocate for civil rights and for human service programs for developmentally disabled people. She was one of the founders of the Association for the Mentally Retarded in Rumford, a founder of the Occupational Training Center (later Pathways) in Auburn and a founder and past president of the John F. Murphy Foundation in Auburn. She wrote the federal grant and served as president of the Advocates for the Developmentally Disabled, now called the Maine Advocacy Center.

As a young woman, she was active in the League of Women Voters, was a founder of the Maine Right to Life and taught Christian doctrine for many years in various Catholic parishes. She served on the board of directors of the Red Cross and the United Way in Lewiston-Auburn.

She was a member of St. Maximilian Kolbe Church and of the Friends of the Scarborough Public Library.

Mrs. Fink was predeceased by her husband, John E. Fink, who died in 2000; and a brother, Maurice R. Nelson, who died in 1980.

Surviving are three sons, John M. Fink of Dorchester, Mass., Jeffrey E. Fink and his wife, Robyn, of Scarborough and Robert W. Fink of Scarborough; a grandson, Benjamin M. Fink of Scarborough; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Maximilian Kolbe Church. Burial will follow at New Calvary Cemetery, South Portland. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Scarborough Public Library, 48 Groom Road, Scarborough 04074; or to Auburn Public Library, 49 Spring St., Auburn 04210. Arrangements are by Conroy-Tully South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland.

Lilla M. 'Peggy' Rollins

1922-2003

BATH — Lilla M. "Peggy" Rollins, 80, of 47 Floral St., Bath, died Sunday, Aug. 3 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

She was born in Bath on Oct. 10, 1922, daughter to Vernon E. and Addie (Oliver) Gray.

Peggy grew up in Five Islands, attended the "one-room schoolhouse" in her elementary years and later graduated from North Yarmouth Academy. Following her education, she worked at Bath Iron Works and then served in the Navy as a nurse during World War II.

After Navy service, she married Kenneth L. LaRose Sr. and lived in Bath and then New Jersey, until his death, with their two sons Wayne L. LaRose and Kenneth L. LaRose Jr. In 1965, she married Clifford M. Rollins. They lived in Bath and then Topsham until his death in 1999.

She was predeceased by her brother, Vernon E. Gray Jr.; and three sisters, Ethelyn Barter, Barbara Avery and Charlotte Jean Carlton.

Survivors include her two sons, Wayne L. LaRose and his wife, Sue, of Bath and Kenneth L. LaRose and his wife, Fran, of Palermo; her "adopted" son Peter Inchcombe and his wife, Sarah, of Hallowell; a sister, Hazel Perow of Bath; and 16 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, at Five Islands Baptist Church, Georgetown Road, Georgetown, with the Rev. Peter Inchcombe officiating.

Arrangements are under the care of Cremation Services of Maine, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast.

Raymond Chester Healey

1943-2003

GARDINER — Raymond Chester Healey, 59, of Libby Hill Road and formerly of the Damariscotta area, died Tuesday morning, Aug. 5, 2003, from diabetic complications at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.

He was born in West Haven, Conn., on Aug. 8, 1943, a son of Ernest and Francia Hulen Berce.

Ray was a Navy veteran. He was a self-employed finished carpenter. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening, and he was a great cook.

He was a member of the American Legion of Damariscotta for several years.

His parents; a son, Stephen; and a brother, William, predeceased him.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda Pelletier Healey, of Gardiner; daughters Ashley and Samantha of Gardiner; his son, John Healey and wife Kathy of Jefferson; son Dana Healey of Farmington; his daughter, Lisa Henry and husband Barry of Wilton; his daughter, Pam Knox of Randolph; his brother, James Healey and wife Pamela of Winter Springs, Fla.; sister Rebecca Maxwell of Waldoboro; sister Anita May of Vermont; sister Roberta Delano of Friendship; his brother, Thomas Berce of Befast; and 15 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours will be 2-4 p.m. Thursday at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner. Burial will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Brenda Healey, RFD 5 Box 482, Gardiner 04345.

Ralph Roland Mangin

WINTHROP — Ralph Roland Mangin, better known as "Buddy" and "Pa," 74, died Aug. 8, 2003, with his family at his side.

He was born in and was a lifetime resident of Winthrop.

Following a long battle with cancer, he will be missed and remembered as the greatest grandfather ever.

He worked for Davis Lumber Co., Peachy Builders, Monmouth Lumber, Cottrel and Grey and Elwood Buzzel.

Buddy was predeceased by his wife of more than 50 years, Pauline (Davis) Mangin; a son, Paul; his parents; and two sisters, Trudy Gibault and Marilyn Melnyk.

He is survived by his sons, Richard Mangin and his wife, Margie, Peter Mangin and Mark Mangin; four grandsons, Rick and his wife, Kathy, Bob and his partner, Rebecca, Peter and his wife, Jamie, and Kyle; one granddaughter, Tasha; one great-grandson, Tyler Christopher; two brothers, Joe and David Mangin; and four sisters, Sally Noel, Chris Stockford, Shirley Mangin and Linda Belz.

A graveside service will be held for the family at Friends Cemetery in West Gardiner.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the wonderful people at Hospice Volunteers of Kennebec Valley, 150 Dresden Ave., Gardiner, 04345.

Robert H. Cushman

1917-2003

GORHAM — Robert H. Cushman, 85, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003, at Gorham House in Gorham.

He was born in Waltham, Mass., on Nov. 30, 1917. He attended local schools in Waltham and later graduated from Kents Hill School. He joined the Navy in 1942 and entered the pilot training program, which he had completed and "soloed" but was hurt in a training exercise and later returned home.

Bob and his wife, Eunice, lived for several years in Waltham, Mass., where he was on the survey and planning board. In 1955, Bob moved to Mount Vernon, where his dad ran a boys' summer camp on Echo Lake.

Bob and his family moved to Readfield and settled on Old Kents Hill Road, where they enjoyed the close neighborhood. Bob started an annual lobster bake for neighbors and friends, which became a popular summer event loved by all.

In the early 1960s, Bob, along with close friends, built Trollheim, a ski chalet at Sugarloaf, to take advantage of the skiing and get his children involved at a young age.

Bob owned and operated Highway Fence and Construction Co. with his brother Norm and later worked with Bridge Construction Corp. as a superintendent.

He was an active member in the Shriners and the Masons.

"Cush," as he was fondly called by his close friends and relatives, was an avid outdoors enthusiast and enjoyed hunting and fly-fishing. His special place to be was with the other members at his camp at Round Mountain Pond, where he enjoyed the special beauty and took pleasure in fly-fishing for brook trout.

Bob and Eunice recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary.

Bob is survived by his wife, Eunice; a daughter, Martha of Chapel Hill, N.C.; two sons, Robert H. Jr. of Gorham and Stephen A. of Yarmouth; a sister, Elizabeth of Burbank, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at Gorham House in Gorham. A private burial will take place in Newton, Mass.

H. June Grotton

1930-2003

JEFFERSON — Helen June Grotton, 73, of Jefferson passed away Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, at her home.

She was born Jan. 22, 1930, in Jefferson, daughter of Horace and Gladys (Peaslee) Cooper, and attended Jefferson schools.

On Aug. 27, 1950, she married Sheldon Grotton, and together they shared 52 years. June was a devoted wife and mother of 10 children. In 1977 she joined the work force until she was forced to retire because of health conditions. She enjoyed writing to her pen pals, Red Sox, NASCAR, knickknacks, her grandchildren and her 1 p.m. soap opera.

She was predeceased by her husband, Sheldon Grotton; her parents; her brother, Clayton Cooper; and her daughter, Brenda J. Grotton.

Survivors include her nine children, Lorraine Grotton of Jefferson, Michael Grotton and wife Evalina of Coopers Mills, Timothy Grotton and wife Theresa of Weeks Mills, Sharon Grotton of Jefferson, Donna Bechard and husband Leonard of Jefferson, Debra Grant and husband Donald of Belgrade Lakes, Russell Grotton of Dodd City, Texas, Robert Grotton and wife Lisa of Jefferson, and Jeffery Grotton and wife Pamela of Jefferson; eight granddaughters, Jillynn, Penny, Jada and husband George, Peggy and husband Jason, Jana, Jackie, Ashely and Joni; five grandsons, Michael, Joshua, Brady, Lucas and Dylan; three step-grandchildren, Kristen, Helena and Michael; two great-granddaughters, Kaitlyn and Olivia; her brother, Earle Cooper; sister Hazel Glidden; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, Gray Chapel, Windsor Neck Road, Windsor, where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3. A private burial for family and close friends will be held immediately afterward at Highland Cemetery in Jefferson. Arrangements are under the direction of Lawry Brothers Funeral Home Gray Chapel, Windsor.
