Bartholomew J. Ryan

SIDNEY — Bartholomew "Bart" Ryan, 68, of Sidney, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at a local hospital, following a brief illness.

Mr. Ryan was born July 31, 1931, to Bartholomew and Margaret Trumble Ryan Hart.

Bart enlisted in the Air Force in 1951, serving at Vance Air Force Base, in Enid, Okla.

Following his discharge, he attended Oklahoma State University.

He worked as an advertising executive for several central Maine radio stations, until his retirement.

Mr. Ryan was a 32 Degree Mason and a Shriner.

An avid horseman, he participated on many levels to promote the quarter horse industry in Maine.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Leslie D. Ryan; his daughters, Lisa Long, of Clairemore, Okla., and Britt Ryan, of Providence, R.I.; a son, Bret Ryan, of Sidney; and two grandchildren.

Bart's family invites family and friends to a celebration of his life from 1-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, June 2, at the Function Room, 255 Trafton Road, in Waterville.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Maine Chapter of National Association of Women In Construction Scholarship Fund, c/o Joyce newman, 3 Hillcrest St., Hallowell 04347, or a favorite charity.

Arrangements are by Direct Cremation of Maine, Belfast.

Walter B. Hall

ORONO — Walter B. Hall, 79, a longtime resident of Augusta, passed away peacefully at his home, in Orono, on Monday, July 3, 2000.

Born May 1, 1921, in New Bedford, Mass., he was the only child of Richard G. and Grace (Butler) Hall. He was raised in Emden and North Anson, and graduated from Anson Academy, in 1939.

He attended University of Maine and graduated from New York Institute of Photography in 1941.

Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, on Dec. 7 1941, Hall enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving his country until December 1945. During World War II, Hall served with the 3rd Marine Division, in the South Pacific, including campaigns at Bougainville, Guam, and Iwo Jima, where he was wounded by enemy fire. Hall's military honors include the Purple Heart, Presidential Unit Citation, and Navy Unit Commendation.

Following his miltary service, Hall returned to Maine and settled in Augusta.

In 1946, he married Arlene M. Farrar, of Augusta. In their life together, they raised two sons and participated in several community activities and organizations. Hall volunteered, for several years, as scout master of Boy Scout Troop 684, a position that gave him great personal reward in helping boys discover their talents and work toward their aspirations.

For several years, Hall worked as an advocate for veterans and their families, with the U.S. Veterans Administration, state, and American Legion Department of Maine. In 1953, he accepted a career position as a rural letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service, in Augusta, where he worked until his retirement in 1978. He supplemented his employment with positions in the Department of Economic Development.

After retirement, Hall spent several years devoting his energies to personal projects. A longtime member of South Parish Congregational Church, in Augusta, Hall served in positions from church school superintendent to sexton. As an outgrowth of that service, Hall began to support Augusta girls athletic teams, attending field hockey, basketball and softball games throughout the state for several years. He was most proud to be known as Cony High School's No. 1 field hockey fan.

His wife, Arlene Hall, died in 1977.

Surviving are two sons, Calvin Hall, and his wife, Brenda, of Presque Isle, and Tim Hall, and his wife, Irene, of Orono; four grandsons, Brian Hall and Nicholas Hall, both of Presque Isle, and Travis Hall and Parker Hall, both of Orono; and nieces and nephews.

A committal service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 7, at Father Leonard LeClair Memorial Chapel, Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Old Belgrade Road, Augusta. A reception will follow, at South Parish Congregational Church, 9 Church St., Augusta.

The family suggests donations be made in his memory to Walter Hall Fund, Girls Athletic Program, c/o Cony High School, 120 Cony St., Augusta 04330.

Arrangements are with Gray & Pratt Funeral Directors, Windsor.

Lawrence R. Picard

LEESBURG, Fla. — Lawrence Richard Picard, 79, of 25134 Barrow Hill, Leesburg, died Monday, July 3, 2000, at Leesburg, as a result of an accident.

He was born Jan. 26, 1921, in Waterville, Maine, the son of Eugene and Marie Rossignol Picard.

A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, Mr. Picard married Emerilda Chaput, in November 1943, in Lewiston, Maine.

Mr. Picard retired from Sterns Department Store, in Waterville, after 43 years as a buyer and salesman.

He moved to St. Petersburg, in 1984, and to Leesburg, in 1989.

A member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, in Leesburg, Mr. Picard was a member of Plantation Golf Association, Waterville Country Club, a former member of Waterville Elks Club, a church usher, and former grand knight of Knights of Columbus.

He was an avid golfer, shooting four holes-in-one.

He is survived by his wife, of Leesburg; daughters, Gayle, and her husband Paul Ropp, of Fairfax, Va., Janet, and her husband, John White, of Waterville, and Julia, and her husband, Kevin Anderson, of Brunswick, Maine; brother, Richard Picard, of Tacoma Lakes, Maine; sisters, Helen Sullivan, of Waterville, Annette Veilleux, of Aurora, Colo., and Evelyn Nadeau, of Winslow, Maine; six grandchildren, Christopher and Elizabeth Ropp, Darla and Kristen White, and Margaret and David Anderson.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 8:30 a.m. Monday, July 10, at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Leesburg, with Fr. Nicholas O'Brien as celebrant.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Leesburg Regional Medical Center Auxiliary, c/o LRMC 600 East Dixie Ave., Leesburg 34748.

Arrangements are by Beyers Funeral Home 1123 West Main St., Leesburg.

Albert E. Stearns

JEFFERSON — Albert E. Stearns, 76, of Jefferson, passed away Tuesday, July 4, 2000, at his home, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born June 5, 1924, in Worcester, Mass., the son of Walter E. and Ethel Barrows Stearns.

He grew up and attended schools in in Upton, Mass., and married Edith L. Hunter, on June 26, 1942.

An Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Stearns was a carpenter and cabinetmaker for 45 years.

After moving to Jefferson, in 1983, he was a custodian at Jefferson Village School for 13 years and had been employed, for the past two years, at Round Top Center for the Arts, in Damariscotta.

He was a member of Seventh Day Adventist Church, in Farmingdale.

Albert was predeceased by a daughter, Ethel Stearns, in 1987.

He is survived by his wife, Edith, of Jefferson; sons, Roger, of Franklin, Mass., Ronald, of Mary Esther, Fla., Gerald, of Northboro, Mass., and Brian, of Holden.

There will be no visiting hours.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, July 9, at Seventh Day Adventist Church, Farmingdale, with Pastor Stephen Dayen officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Albert's memory to Miles Hospice, RR 2, Box 4500, Damariscotta 04543.

Arrangements are by Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.

Clara L. Ellis

WINTHROP — Clara L. Ellis, 70, of Winthrop, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, in Augusta.

Clara was born May 7, 1930, in Roxbury, Mass., the daughter of Ernest S. and Lucy M. (Smith) Rose.

She moved to Maine at the age of 3 and settled in Readfield. She attended Readfield schools and graduated from Winthrop High School.

Clara and her late husband owned and operated Bill's Lunch Restaurant, in Hallowell, until 1958. She then worked at several local nursing homes as a cook. She also took in many children in need of a home.

Mrs. Ellis enjoyed crafts, including knitting, crocheting, and sewing. She liked music and was an avid cook. She enjoyed camping in her younger days.

The love of her life was her children and grandchildren. She would take in any child who needed a home and did so many times.

Clara was predeceased by a son, Frank Farrell.

She is survived by two sons, John Farrell, and his wife, Debra, of Monmouth, and Buster Ellis, and his companion, Charlotte, of Winthrop; five daughters, Jane Farrell Glazier, and her husband, Francis, of Winthrop, Mary Farrell Crocker, and her husband, Leslie, of Winthrop, Lucy Buckman, of Turner, Nancy Collins, and her husband, Bob, of Winthrop, and Janine Collins Burns, and her husband, Bob, of Windsor; a special niece, Tina Mason Lunt, of Monmouth; a sister, Eleanor Lucas, of Readfield; 20 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 14, at Lakeview Cemetery, Winthrop, with Rev. Edward Spencer officiating. Burial will follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 52 Federal St., Brunswick 04011-2194.

Roberts Funeral Home, 26 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, has been asked to assist with arrangements.

Robert T. Arbour

AUGUSTA — Robert T. Arbour, 73, of Riverside Drive, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at Veterans Affairs Medical and Regional Office Center, Togus, after a long illness.

He was born April 10, 1927, in Augusta, the son of Barthelemi and Marie (Gosselin) Arbour, and attended Augusta schools.

Mr. Arbour was a communicant of St. Andrew's Catholic Church and a former member of Le Club Calumet.

A Navy veteran of World War II, Robert was the owner of Kennebec Photo Service.

Mr. Arbour was predeceased by a brother, Roger Arbour, and four sisters, Jeanne Harvey, Rita Harvey, Juliette Arbour, and Carmenne Seavey.

He is survived by a son, David Arbour, of Augusta; two daughters, Therese Arbour, and her companion, Glenn Dube, of Augusta, and Lisa Pepin, and her husband, Michael, of Farmington; two sisters, Gabrielle Bouchard, and her husband, Arthur, of Augusta, and Georgette Dutremble, of Augusta; five grandchildren, Trisha Dube, Robert Dube, Jason Arbour, Meaghan Arbour, and Rachelle Pepin; several aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no public visiting hours.

A committal service will be held at noon Friday, Aug. 11, at Fr. Leonard LeClair Memorial Chapel, Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Old Belgrade Road, Augusta. Burial will follow.

Memorial donations may be made to either American Cancer Society, New England Division, Inc., 52 Federal St., Brunswick 04011-2194, or HealthReach Hospice of Augusta, P.O. Box 1568, Waterville 04903-1568.

Arrangements are under the care of Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.
