Elfie E. Williamson

BRUNSWICK — Elfie E. Williamson, 75, of Kitt Street, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, at Mid Coast Hospital, in Brunswick.

She was born Jan. 15, 1925, in Chelsea, a daughter of Alton and Delia McKechinie Williamson.

She was educated in Chelsea schools and graduated from Cony High School in 1943.

Elfie worked as an accountant for the state Department of Human Resources for 35 years, retiring in 1976.

She lived in Gardiner before moving to Brunswick two years ago.

Elfie was a member of the Nature Conservatory, Rockland Book Club, and Goodwill Circle, in Chelsea.

She enjoyed gardening and was active in the community and enjoyed spending time out with her friends.

Elfie was predeceased by a brother, Alton Williamson Jr., of Coopers Mills.

Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Lawrence (Nina) Robbins, of Bridgewater, Mass., Mrs. James (Edith) Boynton, of South Portland, and Mrs. Herbert (Vera) Harmon, of Milford, N.H.; a special niece, Elizabeth Lemon; and several other nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriner's Hospital, 11 Blossom St., Boston, Mass. 02215, or Arthritis Foundation, 930 Brighton Ave., Portland 04102.

Arrangements are by Demers-Desmond Funeral Home, 34 Cushing St., Brunswick.

Laura M. Darke

RANDOLPH — Laura M. Darke, 84, of Birmingham Road, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, at Robinson's Health Care Facility, Gardiner, after a brief illness.

She was born Jan. 31, 1916, in Wytopitlock, the daughter of Ronello Austin and Florence (Mathews) Austin and the fifth child of 10 children.

Mrs. Darke graduated from Wytopitlock High School in the class of 1933.

She was a homemaker in her own home for most of her life.

Mrs. Darke was a member of Winter Street Baptist Church.

Her husband of 31 years, Austin Darke, died March 31, 1965.

Survivors include a son, Brian O. Darke, of Las Vegas, Nev.; two brothers, Marion Austin, of Canaan, and Vernon Austin, of Southington, Conn.; two sisters, Lois Wright, of Plantsville, Conn., and Irene Gardner, of East Vassalboro; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

At her request, there will be no public visiting hours or funeral service.

Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Gardiner.

Arrangements are under the care of Amesbury-White Funeral Home, 39 Washington Ave., Gardiner.

Mary J. Smith

AUGUSTA — Mary Josephine Smith, 76, of West River Road, died Wednesday, morning, Aug. 9, 2000, at Augusta Rehabilitation Center, Eastern Avenue, Augusta, after a long illness.

She was born Dec. 23 1923, in Randolph, the daughter of Chester and Mary J. (Foley) Hutchinson.

Mrs. Smith had been employed at Augusta Mental Health Institute for more than 20 years, and prior to that, for several years at R.P. Hazzard Shoe Co.

She was a member of the Maine State Retirees Association.

Mrs. Smith was predeceased by two brothers, Chester Hutchinson and James Hutchinson.

Survivors include a son, Jimmy Golden, of Chelsea; three daughters, Kimberly L. Gagnon, and her, husband, Robert Jr., of Augusta, Roxanne Jacquith, of Augusta, and Dottie Connors, and her husband, Denny, of Farmingdale; two brothers, John Hutchinson and Ralph Hutchinson, both of Augusta; four sisters, Catherine Jeannotty, of Chelsea, Minnie Lewis, of Augusta, Mattie Vaughan, of San Diego, Calif., and Madelyn Bragdon, of Hartford, Conn.; four grandchildren; also several nieces, nephews and cousins.

At her request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Burial will be in Gracelawn Memorial Cemetery, Auburn.

Arrangements are by Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.

Agnes C. Bailey

WEST GARDINER — Agnes C. Bailey, 94, of Lewiston Road, died at her home Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, following a brief illness.

She was born in Randolph, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Louise Meuse Praught.

Agnes had been employed for several years by Willow Crest Nursing Home, in Pittston.

She was predeceased by her husband, Earl D. Bailey, her daughter, Dorothy Grimes, and four sons, Donald, Elwood, Charles and Jon.

Survivors include her son, Earl, and his wife, Wendy Bailey, of Dresden; her daughter, Barbara, and her husband, James Thornton, of West Gardiner; three sisters, Catherine Trask, of Richmond, Carolyn, and her husband, Joseph McIver, of Chelsea, and Joyce, and her husband, Linwood Fraser, of Randolph; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will follow, in the family lot in Litchfield Plains Cemetery.

Pare service

AUGUSTA — A memorial Mass for Laurent G. Pare, who died July 29, 2000, was celebrated Thursday morning, Aug. 3, at St. Augustine Catholic Church, with Rev. Richard St. Cyr, pastor, officiating. He was assisted by Rev. Raymond Lagace, OFM.

Altar servers were Patrick Jean and Gerald Rancourt. Organist was David Stewart and soloist was Arthur Pare.

Grandson Mark Pare gave the first reading and great-grandson Derek Patnaude gave the second reading. Taking part in the offertory procession were son, Philip Pare, and daughter, Diane Patnaude.

There were representatives from St. Augustine Parish, and Le Club Calumet.

Burial was in St. Augustine Cemetery, where Rev. St. Cyr offered committal prayers.

The American flag was presented to Mr. Pare's wife, Jeannette (Boucher) Pare, by J. Patrick Murphy.

Arrangements were by Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.

Rev. Michael H. Dugan

FAYETTE — Rev. Michael H. Dugan, 67, of Lovejoy Shores Drive, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, at Brigham and Womens Hospital, Boston, Mass., following a brief illness.

He was born on July 30,1933, in Kingston, N.Y., the son of William H. Dugan and Aurelia (Benda) Dugan.

Following graduation from Kingston High School, he attended the State University of New York Teachers College, New Paltz, N.Y., from which he received his bachelor's degree in 1955. He then attended General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church, New York City, receiving the degree of master of sacred theology in 1958. He did additional study at Salisbury and Wells Theological College, Salisbury, England, and Johnson Institute, Minneapolis, Minn.

He was ordained a deacon on June 11, 1958, and on Dec. 22 of the same year, a priest. Both ordinations, by Rt. Rev. Horace B. Donegan, Bishop of New York, occurred at Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, New York City.

In June 1958, he became curate of Christ Church Episcopal, Gardiner, where he also supervised the mission churches of St. John's, Dresden Mills, and St. Matthias, Richmond. He became vicar of St. Matthew's, Lisbon Falls, and St. Matthias, in 1961, leaving there in 1965 when he was offered the position of assistant to the rector and director of Christian education, Trinity Church, Southport, Conn. Leaving there in 1969, he served as rector of St. Saviour's, Bar Harbor, until 1983, to become rector of St. Mark's, Newport, Vt. From 1987 until 1994 he was canon to the Ordinary of the Diocese of Vermont, or assistant to the bishop. He became priest in charge, later rector, of Trinity Church, Randolph, Mass., in 1994, retiring from that position to the summer home that he and his family long enjoyed on Lovejoy Pond.

Fr. Dugan was active in community, ecumenical and New England Episcopal Church affairs. He was a charter member of both the Lisbon Rotary Club and Lisbon Development Corp. In Connecticut, he was a vice president of Greater Bridgeport Council of Churches, and worked closely with an inner-city parish (St. Mark's) in a joint tutoring program and developing the first day-care center in that city. At that time, he took local leadership in civil-rights activities. While in Bar Harbor, he became the founding president of Mount Desert Island Council of Churches, and served on the board with a term as president of Bar Harbor Public Nursing Association.

He served the Episcopal church in New England as a deputy to the province, on diocesan and provincial canons committees and as a member of the provincial deployment officers. He was the executive secretary to the Vermont Diocesan Council and secretary of convention.

He was married to Priscilla Woodward Dugan at St. Luke's Cathedral, Portland, by Rt. Rev. Oliver L. Loring, Bishop of Maine, on Aug. 6, 1960. They deeply loved one another and enjoyed more than 40 years of marriage.

A brother predeceased him.

He is survived by his wife, Priscilla, who resides at their home on Lovejoy Shores. He also leaves three children, Rev. Jeffrey S. Dugan, of Farmington, Conn., Barbara Dugan Henricks, of Stratham, N.H., and Peter M. Dugan, of Portsmouth, N.H.; five grandchildren, Matthew S. Dugan, Martha Claire Dugan, Christopher S. Dugan, William S. Dugan and Emma R. Henricks. He is also survived by his mother, Aurelia (Benda) Dugan Joyce, who resides in a retirement complex in Ulster Park, N.Y.; and three sisters, Maureen Seche, of Windsor, Calif., Gail Roux, of Rock Hills, S.C., and Anne Borchert of Marlboro, N.Y.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 9, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, corner of School and High streets, Wilton. Committal will be at Pine Grove Cemetery, Dresden Mills, at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Episcopal Relief and Developmental Fund, formerly known as the Presiding Bishop's Fund for World Relief, Episcopal Church Center, 815 Second Ave., New York, N.Y. 10017.

Assisting with arrangements is Amesbury-White Funeral Home, 39 Washington Ave., Gardiner.

Leona D. Bates

MONMOUTH — Leona Dakin Bates, 80, beloved wife and mother, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at Nicholson's Long Term Care and Rehabilitation, Winthrop.

She was born in Melrose, Mass., Dec. 15, 1919, the daughter of Leon G. and Clara (Brown) Dakin. She attended school in Massachusetts and at Kents Hill School, and graduated from Winthrop High School in 1938.

She attended the University of Maine at Orono and graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1968.

Mrs. Dakin married Harold E. Bates and lived in Monmouth most of her married life, moving to Highland Heights, in Winthrop, in 1986. She and Harold celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary in November 1999.

She worked for the Lewiston, Greene and Monmouth telephone companies for many years until 1953, when she became a teacher in Wales for the combined third through fifth grades. She taught there and at Montello School, in Lewiston. She retired from teaching after 25 years.

Mrs. Dakin belonged to, and was past noble grand of Arthur Lovejoy Rebekah Lodge 105, in Winthrop. She was a member of Mary Kelton Dummer Lodge, in Gardiner, and Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a past member of Hillandalers Snowmobile Club, in Winthrop, Monmouth Ladies Firemen's Auxiliary, Monmouth Grand, and Cochnewagen Agricultural Fair Association.

She belonged to North Monmouth Community Church and Maine Teachers Association.

She loved knitting, crocheting, sewing, reading and writing. When her daughter was young, Leona made all of her dance costumes, sometimes as many as 14 of them for a June recital. She made all of her own clothes during her teaching years.

After retirement, she worked for many years on her family's genealogy with her cousin, June.

She traveled to Europe, Central America, the western United States, Canada and Mexico during her teaching career, with teacher friends, returning with interesting artifacts.

She and her husband resided in Safety Harbor, Fla., during the winter, for many years. For the past 3 1/2 years, she and Harold lived with, and were cared for, by their son, Leonard, and his wife, Grace, in Monmouth.

Her husband, Harold, died on June 15, 2000. She missed him terribly.

She will be sadly missed by her three children, Harold L. Bates, of Jacksonville, Fla., Leonard D. Bates, and his wife, Grace, of Monmouth, and Nancy B. Ludewig, and her husband, Douglas, of Monmouth; a sister, Rita D. Kenfield, and her husband, Albert, of North Monmouth; seven grandchildren, Robert Bates, Eric Bates, Lee Ann Miller, Lou Ann Bachelder, Katherine Ludewig, Sherry Ferland, and Lauri Frost; 10 great-grandchildren and other dear family members.

Visiting hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, at Roberts Funeral Home, 26 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, with Rev. Ed Spencer, pastor of North Monmouth Community Church, officiating. Burial will be in Glenside Cemetery, Winthrop.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to North Monmouth Community Church, Christian Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 35, North Monmouth, or Cumston Public Library Children's Room, P.O. Box 239, Monmouth 04259.
