Marjorie J. Maxcy

SOUTH PORTLAND — Marjorie J. Maxcy, 88, of South Portland, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at a local nursing facility.

She was born in Scarsdale, N.Y., a daughter of Harry Sturgis and Caroline Clapp Jackson. Mrs. Maxcy graduated from Deering High School in 1931.

She married Gardiner J. Maxcy, in Lexington, Mass., on Oct. 4, 1935.

After living in Stowe, Mass., for a short time, she raised her family in Clinton, Mass., where she was active in church, hospital and other local affairs. Mrs. Maxcy moved to Lexington, Mass., in 1957, where she and her husband owned and operated the Lexington Press, in downtown Lexington, for many years.

She and her husband, and family, summered on Squirrel Island, in the Boothbay region, having kept the Maxcy cottage there until 1993.

She recently resided at Portland House, in Portland, and regularly attended St. Alban's Church, in Cape Elizabeth.

She was predeceased by her husband.

Mrs. Maxcy is survived by two daughters, Anne Maxcy Newbury, of Squirrel Island and South Portland, and Carolyn Maxcy, of Cape Elizabeth; one son, Robert F. Maxcy, of Holliston, Mass.; grandchildren, Katherine Newbury Ray, of Cape Elizabeth, Dexter Gardiner Newbury, of Winthrop, Jennifer A. Maxcy, of Santa Monica, Calif., and Christopher R. Maxcy, of San Francisco; great-grandchildren, Hope Althea Rogers and Courtney Victoria Rogers, both of Winthrop.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, at St. Alban's Church, 885 Shore, Road, Cape Elizabeth. Burial will immediately follow, at St. Mary the Virgin Church Yard Cemetery, in Falmouth.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Squirrel Island Chapel, c/o John M. Lesdure Jr., Treasurer, P.O. Box 755, 3 Church Lane, Kennebunkport 04046.

Arrangements are by Hay & Peabody Funeral Home, 749 Congress St., Portland.

Freelow A. Crummett

NEWCASTLE — Freelow Allen Crummett, 44, of Roxbury, Mass., passed away Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, in Boston, Mass., after short battle with cancer.

He was born in Gardiner, Jan. 13, 1956, the son of Freelow E. and Lucy S. Crummett, and attended Newcastle schools, graduating from Lincoln Academy in 1974.

Mr. Crummett attended Boston University and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

He was a very talented graphic arts designer, and owned and operated Design Wise. He had many clients in the Boston area who spoke highly of his work.

Freelow's hobbies were collecting miniature chairs and clocks, Eames and Knoll furniture, and his and others' artwork, and movies. His loves included his beloved Land Cruiser, travel, textiles, food, design, the outdoors, Vermont, Maine and music of all sorts, mostly folk and soul.

He is survived by his parents, of Newcastle; one sister, Brenda Cayford, and her husband, Ben, and their two children, Riley and Lindsay, of Skowhegan; one brother, Mark Crummett, and his wife, Cheryl, of Whitefield; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

At his request, there will be no visiting hours. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8, at Alna Cemetery, Route 218, in Alna.

Donations may be made in his memory, to American Cancer Society, Maine Division, Inc. 52 Federal St., Brunswick 04011-2194.

Arrangements are under the direction of Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, Skowhegan.

Almosa V. Putnam

PITTSTON — Almosa Vigue Putnam, 84, of Pittston, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta.

She was born April 1, 1916, in Augusta, the daughter of Arthur and Amanda Busque Vigue, of North Whitefield, was educated in Whitefield schools, and graduated from Gates Business College.

On Oct. 11, 1941, she married Harlan Putnam.

Mrs. Putnam was employed by the state for many years, most recently in the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, retiring in 1980.

She and her husband owned and operated Kennebec Mobile Home Sales and Park. They wintered in Jupiter, Fla., for several years, and enjoyed traveling.

Mrs. Putnam was a member of Highland Avenue United Methodist Church, Rural Letter Carriers Auxiliary, Lions Club and Randolph Senior Citizens.

She was a loyal supporter of all her grandchildren's academic and athletic activities.

Almosa was predeceased by her husband in 1995, as well as an infant daughter, Julianne.

She is survived by her daughters, Joan Ireland, and her husband, Larry, of Pittston, and Sharon Mathews, and her husband, Paul, of Randolph; five grandchildren, Lisa Ireland, Troy Ireland, Cara Mathews, Colleen Mathews and Eliza Mathews; a sister, Juliette Cloutier; a brother, Thomas Vigue; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at Highland Avenue United Methodist Church, Gardiner.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Highland Avenue United Methodist Church, c/o Kay Gregory, 72 Adams St., Farmingdale 04344, or East Pittston United Methodist Church, c/o Ralph Lathe, RFD 4, Box 342, Nash Road, Gardiner 04345.

Walter James Curtis II

SIDNEY — Walter James "Jim" Curtis II, 32, of Western Avenue, Winthrop, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, as a result of a car accident at Sidney.

He was born in Augusta, Nov. 28, 1967, the son of Walter and Anna (Snell) Curtis, and attended Penobscot Valley High School, class of 1986.

Jim was a long-time carpenter at Windy Hollow Construction Co., of Fayette.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, anything to do with the outdoors, and particularly time spent with his children.

He is survived by his daughter, Skylar Curtis, and son, Walter James Curtis III, both of Kents Hill; parents, Walter and Anna Curtis, of Fayette; grandmother, Julie Curtis, of Gardiner; sisters, Wendy Pierce, of Bowdoinham, and Rebecca Caramihalis, of Sanford; nephews, Christopher Perry, and Peter Caramihalis; nieces, Katherine Perry, and Amy Caramihalis; and many cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, at Kincer Funeral Home, 14 Pleasant St., Richmond, with Pastor Margaret Queior, of Dresden-Richmond Methodist Church officiating.

In Jim's memory, donations may be made to his children's trust fund, c/o Walter Curtis, RR 3, Box 3600, Kents Hill 04349.

Ruth R. Miller

CHELSEA — Ruth Robertson Miller, 85, of Togus Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000, at Robinson's Health Care Facility, in Gardiner.

She was born in Carmel, the daughter of Donald and Lena Bellmore Clapham, and graduated from Gardiner Area High School.

Mrs. Miller had been employed by various shoe shops in the area.

She was a member and past worthy matron of Order of Eastern Star.

Mrs. Miller was predeceased by her husband, Richard Miller, and twin sister, Elizabeth Thompson.

Survivors include her daughters, Priscilla Lewis, of Chelsea, and Linda Turner, of Augusta; her sons, Gerald Miller, of Randolph, and William Miller, of Enola, Pa.; 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Honorary pallbearers are grandsons, Russell Lewis, Robert Lewis, Scott Miller, Wayne Watson and David Miller.

Visiting hours are 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 17. Burial will follow, in the family lot in Chelsea Heights Cemetery.

James G. Brann

JEFFERSON — James Glidden Brann, 84, of 418 Augusta Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000, at Country Manor Nursing Home, Coopers Mills Village, Whitefield.

He was born June 24, 1916, in Jefferson, the son of Lawrence Alden and Gertrude (Noyes) Brann, and attended Murphy School, in Jefferson.

As a young man, he was employed as an electrician at Bath Iron Works during World War II, and at Kittery Naval Shipyard. He sold real estate in his younger years. Mr. Brann worked for many years as a carpenter, builder and home contractor.

He was an avid citizen's band radio operator whose handle was "Dragon." He loved to play the Maine State Lottery, despite his period of ill health.

Mr. Brann had been the companion of Saima F. Harvella for nearly 20 years. He and Saima made their home in Jefferson for the past few years, and had previously lived in Windsor.

In addition to his loving companion, Saima F. Harvella, of Jefferson, survivors include two sons, Roland O. Brann, and companion, Sue Sproul, of Jefferson, and Ronald J. Brann, and his wife, Carol, of Waldoboro; his daughter, Juanita J. McLean, of Waldoboro; his sister, Ethel Noyes, of Jefferson; two brothers, Oliver Brann, and his wife, Terrie, of Whitefield, and Charles Brann, of Augusta; five grandchildren, Shawn Brann, Natasha Brann, James Brann Jr., Robert Lermond, and Stephen McLean; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

By request, visiting hours are private.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at Shepard Cemetery, Route 32, Jefferson, with Pastor Albert York, of Weeks Mills Advent Christian Church officiating. Committal and burial will follow.

Arrangements are by Gray & Pratt Funeral Directors, Windsor.

Theresa Boudreau

WATERVILLE — Theresa Boudreau, 72, of Waterville, died Tuesday evening, Nov. 28, 2000, at Maine Medical Center, Portland.

She was born Feb. 14, 1928, in Waterville, the daughter of Joseph and Clara (Veilleux) Labbe.

Mrs. Boudreau was employed for several years at Keyes Fibre Co. in Waterville.

She was an active beano player.

Mrs. Boudreau was predeceased by her husband, Wilfred Boudreau, in 1999; three brothers, Leo Labbe, Percy Labbe, and Norman Labbe; and three sisters, Yvonne Savasuk, Alice Luce, and Lillian Ware.

Survivors include one daughter, Patricia Douin, and her husband, Paul, of Augusta; one sister, Jeannette Rodrigue, and her husband, George, of Winslow; one brother, Roland Labbe, of Massachusetts; one special niece, Venita Nadeau; as well as several other nieces and nephews.

There will be no visiting hours.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 4, at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Old Belgrade Road, Augusta, with Rev. Michael Gendreau officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Veilleux Funeral Home, 8 Elm St., Waterville.

Dorothy Grover Schmidt

AUGUSTA — Dorothy Grover Schmidt, 93, of Parkwood Drive, a former longtime resident of 13 Elm St., died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, following a brief illness.

She was born in Bethel, Oct. 1, 1907, the daughter of Adrian Grover and Ruth (Bean) Grover.

She graduated from Gould Academy and Central Maine Medical Center School of Nursing, where she received her nursing degree.

Mrs. Schmidt had been employed by Redington-Fairview Hospital, in Farmington, as a registered nurse for several years and previously had worked as a private duty nurse for several years.

Mrs. Schmidt was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, of Augusta, and formerly served as a board member of St. Mark's Home for several years.

Her husband, Dr. Lorrimer Schmidt, died May 20, 1985. She was also preceded in death by a son, Wayne Schmidt.

Surviving are two sons, David L. Schmidt, and his wife, Harriett, of West Gardiner, and Dr. James L. Schmidt, and his wife, Anne, of Readfield; one sister, Sylvia Luxton, of Gorham; five grandchildren, Lisa Hicks, Steven Schmidt, Gloria Weeks, Robert Schmidt, and Dianna Erb; six great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

There will be no public visiting hours. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Augusta. Spring burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Augusta.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Summer Street, Augusta 04330, or Kennebec Valley YMCA, Winthrop Street, Augusta 04330.

Arrangements are under the care of Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.
