Belle Jacobs Seibert

NEW YORK CITY — Belle Jacobs Seibert, originally of Fayette, passed away at Mt. Sinai Hospital, New York City, on Jan. 20, 2000, from complications of chronic lung failure.

Although born in Boston in 1915, she grew up in Fayette, where her father farmed and supervised the construction of many of the highways and roads of this state.

She attended Kents Hill School and, shortly after graduation, moved to New York City.

In that city, she quickly applied the rugged work ethic she learned in Maine. She became the family cook, nanny, and surrogate mother for a prominent Park Avenue family. As a second job, she worked in the maintenance department of Columbia University at night. In between, she baked cakes for profit, for St. John the Divine Church, and for her boarders.

She developed a coterie of friends in New York. Many were having difficult times, and many were minorities, but all required assistance which she cheerfully provided.

Each August, as long as she was able, she spent the month at her sister's camp on Cobbossee Lake in Manchester. There, all her nieces, nephews, family, and friends had the benefit of her cooking and wry wisdom.

She was predeceased by her parents, Carl Jacobs and Orabelle Mereow, and her brothers and sisters, Elsie Crimmin, Ethyl Weymouth, Fred Jacobs, Wesley Jacobs and Oren Jacobs. She is survived by nephews and nieces, Elsie Brackett, Mona Hackey, Louise Hohorst, Kathleen Stairs, Carl Weymouth and Rachel Crimmin White, and a cousin Alice Dunn.

Her memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Dunn's Corner Church, Mount Vernon. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Harvey E. Crimmin Jr. Memorial Fund or the Dunn's Corner Church Steeple Fund.
