William E. Shardlow Jr.

SKOWHEGAN — William E. Shardlow Jr., 79, of Frederick's Corner Road, Norridgewock, formerly of Farmington, died late Wednesday evening, Aug. 9, 2000, at Willows Nursing Care Center, in Skowhegan, after an extended battle with cancer.

He was born April 17, 1921, in East Wilton on the family farm, the first child of William Edward Shardlow Sr. and Marion (Gilman) Shardlow.

Bill, or "Junior" as he was known to many of his friends, attended East Wilton schools and graduated from Wilton Academy in 1940.

He was a member of Wilson Grange, in East Wilton, serving as master in 1949 and 1950, and the State and National Grange. He was also a member of Franklin Lodge Independent Order of Odd Fellows, of Farmington.

During World War II, Bill worked with his father on the farm and also was employed at Bass Shoe Factory, in Wilton. Later, he worked as a relief projectionist at the State Theatre, in Farmington. He was employed at Wilton Woolen Co. until the spring of 1955 when the mill closed.

In 1949, Bill married Anna May Small, of Farmington. They moved to a small farm on Farmington Falls Road where they raised five children.

He then was employed at Farmington Shoe Co. for 27 years and continued working at the State Theatre until 1983. With the shoe factory about to close and being 62 years of age, he decided to retire from both jobs in 1983.

After retirement, Bill delivered the Waterville Morning Sentinel and the Portland Sunday Telegram.

Bill was very interested in history and genealogy and was a member of the Maine Genealogical Society. One of the highlights of his life was a University of Southern Maine baseball tour to the various major and minor league parks and games in the summer of 1997 when he had the opportunity to meet his childhood idol, Bob Feller.

He always enjoyed attending his children's and grandchildren's school activities and attended the Eastern Maine High School basketball tournament, in Bangor, for more than 20 consecutive years.

He was predeceased by a sister, Laura DeMillo, of Jay.

He is survived by the mother of his children, Anna Shardlow, of Wilton; two sons, William A. Shardlow, and his wife, Sharon, of Windham, and Wilbur A. Shardlow, and his wife, Naomi L., of Gardiner; three daughters, Christine O'Roak, and her husband, J. Charles, of Searsport, Rachel Heath, and her husband, David, of Farmington, and Mary Hyland, and her husband, Randall T., of Searsmont; a brother, John Shardlow, of East Wilton; a sister, Betty Tobin, of North Attleboro, Mass.; 10 grandchildren, Jonathan and Matthew Shardlow, of Portland, Nicole Willey, of Milbridge, Tyson Shardlow, of Gardiner, Jared and Jonah Shardlow, of Searsport, Joshua and Holly Heath, of Farmington, and Rose and William Hyland, of Searsmont; two great-grandchildren, Anna Shardlow, of Portland, and Cole Willey, of Milbridge; and a close personal friend, Jennie Lewis, of Norridgewock.

Relatives and friends are invited to call 7-9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, at Wiles Funeral Home, 137 Farmington Falls Road, Farmington, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Farmington.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to Wilson Grange, or to Maine Genealogical Society, c/o Wiles Funeral Home, 137 Farmington Falls Road, Farmington 04938.

Donald C. Blodgett

PENOBSCOT — Donald Chase Blodgett, 81, of Penobscot, died peacefully Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, surrounded by his loving family, at Penobscot.

He was born April 7, 1919, at Brooksville, the son of William and Edith (Hinckley) Blodgett.

He graduated from Brooksville High School and Fort Trumbull Officers Training School, in New London, Conn., with highest honors.

He started yachting on the yacht Nakhoda in 1938, spending winters in Miami, Fla. and summers in Harbor Springs, Mich.

He was a licensed pipe welder, working at both Bath and South Portland shipyards.

Don was a World War II veteran of the Merchant Marines, serving as chief mate on the Aedenus Burke and Sturdy Beggar in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, and the Mediterranean Sea. After World War II, he shipped on the Del Rio, a combination passenger and cargo ship, from New Orleans to South America. He loved the sea.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

In 1947, he purchased Blodgett's Market, which he operated until his retirement in 1986. He was a licensed real estate broker and worked as Blodgett's Real Estate.

He was a charter member of Downeast Merchant Marines, 50-year member and past master of Rising Star Lodge 177, AF&AM, honorary trustee of George Stevens Academy, former member of Penobscot School Committee, and founder and first fire chief of Penobscot Volunteer Fire Department, serving 21 years as chief.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carolyn (Leach); brother, Malcolm, and his wife, Myrtle, of East Orange, N.J. and Brooksville; sons, Michael, and his wife, Anna, of Augusta, Gerald, and his wife, Debbie, of Brunswick, Donald II, of Scarborough, and Alden, of Penobscot; daughter, Jacqueline Curtis, and her husband, Robert, of Standish; seven grandchildren, Todd, and his wife, Elizabeth, of Hallowell, Megan, of Portland, Jennifer and Matthew, of Brunswick, and Chandler, Annemarie, and Andrea, of Scarborough; one great-granddaughter, Maeve; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours will be 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 14 Elm St., Bucksport, with Masonic services at 7 p.m.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, at South Penobscot Baptist Church, with Rev. Ron Hutchins officiating. Interment, with military honors, will be in Bay Cemetery, Penobscot.

Donations in his memory may be made to Alzheimer's Research, 15825 Shady Grove Road, Suite 140, Rockville, Md. 20850-4022, or to Penobscot Volunteer Fire Dept., c/o Albert "Bim" Snow, Fire Chief, Penobscot 04476.

Clara L. Ellis

WINTHROP — Clara L. Ellis, 70, of Winthrop, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, in Augusta.

Clara was born May 7, 1930, in Roxbury, Mass., the daughter of Ernest S. and Lucy M. (Smith) Rose.

She moved to Maine at the age of 3 and settled in Readfield. She attended Readfield schools and graduated from Winthrop High School.

Clara and her late husband owned and operated Bill's Lunch Restaurant, in Hallowell, until 1958. She then worked at several local nursing homes as a cook. She also took in many children in need of a home.

Mrs. Ellis enjoyed crafts, including knitting, crocheting, and sewing. She liked music and was an avid cook. She enjoyed camping in her younger days.

The love of her life was her children and grandchildren. She would take in any child who needed a home and did so many times.

Clara was predeceased by a son, Frank Farrell.

She is survived by two sons, John Farrell, and his wife, Debra, of Monmouth, and Buster Ellis, and his companion, Charlotte, of Winthrop; five daughters, Jane Farrell Glazier, and her husband, Francis, of Winthrop, Mary Farrell Crocker, and her husband, Leslie, of Winthrop, Lucy Buckman, of Turner, Nancy Collins, and her husband, Bob, of Winthrop, and Janine Collins Burns, and her husband, Bob, of Windsor; a special niece, Tina Mason Lunt, of Monmouth; a sister, Eleanor Lucas, of Readfield; 20 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 14, at Lakeview Cemetery, Winthrop, with Rev. Edward Spencer officiating. Burial will follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 52 Federal St., Brunswick 04011-2194.

Roberts Funeral Home, 26 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, has been asked to assist with arrangements.

John K. Murphy

PORTLAND — A celebration of the life of John K. Murphy, former executive editor of the Portland Press Herald and Maine Sunday Telegram, will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at F. Parker Reidy's, 87 Exchange St.

The Old Port restaurant was a popular spot with Mr. Murphy and his co-workers from the newspaper office, a block away.

The event will be hosted by the two surviving children of Mr. Murphy, Ellen F. Barnett of Spencer, West Va., and Dr. Robert Murphy of New Haven, Conn.

Mr. Murphy died on April 28, 2000, after complications from a heart attack.

He began his 40-year career as a reporter at the Kennebec Journal in Augusta, his hometown newspaper, and retired as executive editor 10 years ago. He lived in Clearwater, Fla.

Leonard J. Pelotte

SIDNEY — Leonard J. Pelotte, 70, of Sidney, died early Thursday morning, Nov. 30, 2000, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Waterville.

He was born May 16, 1930, in Sidney, the son of Alfred and Phoebe (Levine) Pelotte, and attended Sidney schools. He was an Army veteran.

At one time he was employed by Diamond International, in Oakland, and was a self-employed woodsman. For many years he owned and operated Leonard Pelotte Construction, in Sidney.

His wife of 43 years, Geraldine Pelotte, and a son, Earl, died previously.

Survivors include two daughters, Rebecca Philbrick, and her husband, John, of Sidney, and Pamela Pelotte, and her fiance, Timothy Powers, of Pittsfield; three grandchildren, Cari and Matthew Philbrick, and Lisa Arbour, all of Sidney, and two great-grandchildren, Kristen and Morgan Arbour, of Sidney; several cousins, and his dog, "Poopie." He will be missed by his special friends at the Middle Road General Store.

A graveside funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, at Lewis Cemetery, Cottle Road, Oakland.

Those who wish, may make memorial donations to Sidney Rescue, c/o Sidney Town Hall, 2986 Middle Road, Sidney 04330.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Funeral Home, Oakland.

Geraldine M. "Gerry" Picard

AUGUSTA — Geraldine M. "Gerry" Picard, 68, of Riverside Drive, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at her home.

She was born at Caswell Plantation, May 14, 1932, the daughter of Claude and Yvonne (Labreck) Grenier.

She graduated from Van Buren High School.

Mrs. Picard was employed by the city of Augusta as a crossing guard at Williams School for 21 years and had been on duty the day she died. She also was employed as a custodian at the office of Dr. Daniel Clark, where she had worked for 24 years.

She was a Cub Scout den mother and leader for many years for Troop 678, of Augusta.

Mrs. Picard was a communicant of St Andrew's Catholic Church, where she was a Eucharistic minister and taught CCD classes for more than 17 years.

She was a member of the Gardiner Singles Club Board of Trustees, American Association of Retired Persons, and was an avid bingo player. Most of all, she was a devoted mother and grandmother.

Mrs. Picard was predeceased by her husband, Simon J. Picard, who died Aug. 15, 1974.

Survivors include her three sons, Wayne Picard, and his significant other, Katie Hughes, Ronald Picard, and his wife, Stacy, and Robert Picard, and his wife, Rhonda, all of Vassalboro; five brothers, Herbert Pelkey, of Florida, Howard Pelkey, of Guilford, George Pelkey, of Zephyrhills, Fla., Mike Pelkey, of Pittsfield, and Richard Pelkey, of Stetson; four sisters, Bernice Currier, of Guilford, Lorraine Dominique, of Long Island, N.Y., Hazel Numberg, of Belmont, N.H., and Irene Pelkey, of Oakland; seven grandchildren, Christopher Picard, and his significant other, Patricia Putnam, Jaime Picard, and her significant other, Joshua Hall, Angie Picard, and her fiance, Jean Couturier, Robby Picard, Ryan Picard, Jason Picard and Randy Picard; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may visit 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, and Sunday, Feb. 4, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, where officers and members of Abnaki Council 334-3rd Degree Knights of Columbus, are asked to meet at 7 p.m. Sunday, to recite prayers for their departed member Simon J. Picard's wife, Gerry. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Monday, Feb. 5, at St. Andrew's Catholic Church. Burial will follow, in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Old Belgrade Road, Augusta.

Francis X. Richard

MONMOUTH — Francis X. Richard, 72, a resident of Blue Road, Monmouth, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta, where he was a patient for one day, following a lingering illness.

He was born in Winn, April 23, 1928, the son of Oliver and Elizabeth Duplisea Richard.

He attended Monmouth schools and served in the Army during the Korean Conflict.

Francis married Mildred Hartford, of Leeds, Dec. 31, 1952, in Sabattus.

He was employed by Maine Central Railroad in the maintenance of ways department until 1987.

Francis enjoyed tinkering and inventing. He also enjoyed drawing, sketching, and welding. He could do anything.

He was predeceased by one sister, Marie J. McCluskey.

Mr. Richard is survived by his wife, of Monmouth; two daughters, Linda Arsenault, of Mount Vernon, and Judy Boucher, and her husband, Gary, of Sabattus; one son, Blaine Richard, of Litchfield; five sisters, Eileen Thompson, of Leicester, Mass., Lettie Boutte, of Sidney, Elizabeth Richard, of Greene, Rosie Miller, and her husband, Hobart, of Litchfield, and Alice Hunt, of Sabattus; four grandchildren and three great-granddaughters.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, at Bragdon-Finley Funeral Home, 707 Main St., Monmouth. Interment will be in Monmouth Ridge Cemetery, Monmouth.
