Francois Jean Lamontagne

GRAY — Francois Jean Lamontagne, 88, died Thursday, July 26, 2001, at a Lewiston hospital.

He was born Dec. 19, 1912 in Bury, Canada, the son of Arsene and Odelie Carrier Lamontagne.

Mr. Lamontagne, was an Air Force sergeant on a C-47 during World War II. After the war he worked as a foreman at Copper Tank, in Portland. Mr. Lamontagne was a member of St. Gregory's Parish.

He was predeceased by his wife, Geraldine Gurney.

Surviving are four brothers, Joe Lamont, of New Jersey, Phil Lamontagne, of Chelsea, Lawrence Lamontagne, of Carson, Calif., and Leon Lamontagne, of Norwalk, Calif.; two sisters, Theresa Cromer, of Norwalk, and Ella Chasse, of Winslow.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 28, at St. Gregory's Parish. Monsignor Robert Lavoie will be the celebrant. Burial will be private. Arrangements are by Wilson Funeral Home, 24 Shaker Road, Gray.

Phyllis A. Fogg

1915-2002

WINTHROP — Phyllis A Fogg, 86, of Upper Narrows Lane, died peacefully on Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care, Glenridge Drive, Augusta, after a long illness.

She was born in West Gardiner, May 19, 1915, the daughter of Walter and Ada (Hutchings) Merrill.

Phyllis was educated in Gardiner schools.

She worked as a nanny in South Carolina for many years. Upon her retirement, she went to live with her son and daughter-in-law in California, then in Missouri, returning to Maine in 1997 when her son retired.

Before her eyesight started to deteriorate, she was an avid reader and liked to travel.

She was predeceased by her sister, Lois Beauchaine, in 1970.

She is survived by her son, Robert Smith and his wife, Carmen, of Winthrop; three grandchildren, Catherine Smith of Omaha, Neb., Mark Smith of Culpepper, Va., and Valerie Smith of Syracuse, N.Y.; one great-granddaughter, Jessica Smith of Spelter, W.Va.; her brother, Norwood Merrill and his wife, Marjorie, of Gardiner; three nieces, Laurie Carlson of Gardiner, Patrice Clark of Winthrop and Beth Glidden of Vassalboro, and their families; and Barbara Begin of Niantic, Conn., a special person who was like a daughter, and her family.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 6-8 p.m. Monday, April 8 at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, where a celebration of Phyllis' life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be at Glenside Cemetery in Winthrop at a later date.

Joseph A. Libbey

1911-2002

AUGUSTA — Joseph A. Libbey, 91, died Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at Maine Veterans' Home in Augusta.

He was born in Bangor, March 8, 1911, the son of George and Margaret (Barry) Libbey.

Joseph was educated in the Bangor area. He attended the Julliard School of Music for two years, and was first violinist with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra before enlisting in the Army during World War II. He was a private first class and radio operator serving March 6, 1942- Oct. 8, 1945 in the campaigns in Normandy, northern France, the Rhineland and Central Europe. He was the recipient of 4 bronze service stars and a Good Conduct Medal.

He later returned to Maine and graduated from the Univerity of Maine at Orono in 1950 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was employed by the aircraft industry at Pratt and Whitney in Connecticut for most of his career as a research engineer in mechanical and thermodynamics. He worked with some of the first computers used in the design of aircraft. He had been a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Church since he retired and moved to Augusta in the 1970s.

He was a familiar patron of the Maine State Library, where he pursued his hobby of family genealogy. He kept up with the local Bangor news through the Bangor Daily News, and remained interested in world news, history and geography. In recent years, he was associated with Senior Spectrum through visits at the Cohen Center in Hallowell.

Mr. Libbey was very interested in supporting those who were less fortunate, and contributed to several different charitable organizations, such as St. Jude's Hospital. He was also a generous member of the UMaine Alumni. He was a quiet, humble gentleman who will be fondly remembered for his quick smile and his faithfulness to his God.

Joseph was predeceased by his brother, Edward Libbey; and two sisters, Margaret Myatt and Ruth Case.

He leaves behind two nieces, Ann Moore of Lewis, N.Y., and Elaine Wisneiwski of Elizabethtown, N.Y.; and two nephews, Charles Libbey of Littleton, N.C., and Paul Myatt of Denver Colo., who knew him as "Uncle Joe" and who he would, even in his later years, drive long distances to visit in other states. He also leaves behind two special friends, Elizabeth Phelps of Winthrop and Elizabeth Gardella of Augusta.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit 4-7 p.m. Friday, April 5, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home 1 Church St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Western Ave., Augusta, with Rev. Mike Gendreau, celebrant. Burial will follow at approximately 1 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Bangor.

For those who wish, donations in his memory can be made either to St. Mary's School, c/o Dan Hickey Center Fund, P.O. Box 555, Augusta 04332-0555, or to the Memorial and Honor Program, St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105-1942.

Tammy Ann Darling Matovcik

1965-2002

AUGUSTA — Tammy Ann Darling Matovcik, 36, of Stone Street, Augusta, and formerly of Perth Amboy, N.J., passed away unexpectedly April 1, 2002.

She was born in Perth Amboy, Dec. 20, 1965, a daughter of Edwin and Maryanne Waters Darling. Tammy graduated from Rutgers University with a degree in marine biology.

She had been employed for 12 years as head chef for a Ground Round Restaurant in New Jersey. After an automobile accident in 2000, which left her disabled, she moved to Maine.

She is survived by her mother, MaryAnne Darling Hundanish of New Jersey, her companion of five years, Robert E. Dedo of Augusta; her son, William Matovcik of Worcester, Mass.; two sisters, Nan and MaryAnn Darling of N.J.; her brother, Keith Waters of New Jersey; a grandson, Gabriel William Matovcik; her good friend, Anna Hill of Augusta; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner. Burial will be in the Whitefield Cemetery.

Florence Valliere

1915-2002

GREAT NECK, N.Y. — Florence Valliere, 87, of Great Neck and formerly of Augusta, Maine, died at her residence, March 21, 2002.

She was born in Augusta, Jan. 8, 1915, the daughter of Emile and Josephine (Lessard) Valliere.

Florence had been employed at Bates Manufacturing Co.-Edwards Division for a period of years. She moved to New York and became a child-care provider and housekeeper for the Epstein family of Long Island.

She was predeceased by her parents; one brother, Romeo; five sisters, Muriel, Rose Gagne, Adrienne Madore, Jeannette St. Pierre and Rolande Packard.

Survivors include her brother, Robert and his wife, Rita, of Augusta; a sister, Yvette Bilodeau and her husband, Raoul, of Arizona; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial Mass was held at St. Aloysius Church, Great Neck.

Marie E. Dostie

1905-2002

AUGUSTA — Marie Edith Dostie, 97, formerly of Mount Vernon Avenue, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at Augusta Rehabilitation Center, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Augusta, April 23, 1905, the daughter of Augustin Cloutier and Angelina (Mathieu) Cloutier.

Mrs. Dostie was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church. She had been employed by Bates Manufacturing Co. for 20 years and by E.E. Taylor Shoe Co. for 10 years while raising 12 children.

She was an extraordinary person with many natural talents. She could tat, crochet, sew, quilt and make braided and hooked rugs. As a young mother, she would make many of her children's clothes. Over the years, in her "spare" time, she tatted beautiful ladies' handkerchiefs, crocheted countless afghans and made about 100 quilts. She shared most of these items with family and friends.

Marie Edith was predeceased by two husbands, Albert Soucy and Alonzo Dostie. She was also preceded in death by a son, Roger Soucy, and a daughter, Ann Marie Gagne.

Surviving are five sons, Herman Soucy and John Soucy of Largo, Fla., Rene Soucy of Manchester, N.H., George Soucy of Belgrade, and Arthur Soucy of Mount Vernon; five daughters, Albertine Labbe, Theresa Smith, Gloria Fleming and Rose Couture, all of Augusta, and Constance Beckim of Gardiner; one brother, Rosario Cloutier of North Whitefield; two sisters, Marion Fortin and Reinette Dearborn, both of Augusta; one stepson, Gabriel Dostie; two stepdaughters, Rachael Violette and Pauline Gauthier; 42 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 5, at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Holy Family Cemetery. Ordway E. Laflin

2002

LEICESTER, Mass. — Ordway E. Laflin, 88, of 4004 Pine Hill Road in Mount Vernon, Maine, formerly of Leicester, died Monday, July 29, 2002, at Robinson Health Care Center in Gardiner, Maine.

He leaves a son, Edward E. Laflin of Manchester, N.H.; three daughters, Florence A. Collins of Manassas, Va., Karen M. Costa of Danielson, Conn., and Carol P. Cooper of Cherry Valley, Mass.; and two grandchildren.

He owned and operated Laflin's Garage in Leicester for more than 30 years, retiring in 1976.

He was a 65-year member of the Spencer Lodge of Masons AF&AM. He received a 50-year ring from the Lodge.

He was born in Worcester, Mass., the son of Salem and Florence (Wheeler) Laflin, and lived in Leicester until 1974, before moving to Mount Vernon.

A private funeral will be held with burial at Pine Grove Cemetery in Leicester at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Please omit flowers. Contributions may be made to the Masonic Home, Main Street, Charlton, Mass. 01507. Morrison-Morin Funeral Home of Leicester is directing arrangements.

Lorraine S. Gingrow

1927-2002

HALLOWELL — Lorraine S. Gingrow, 75, of Outer Central Street and also of Belleview, Fla., died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at Munroe Regional Medical Center in Belleview following a brief illness.

She was born in Augusta, March 25, 1927, the daughter of Francis and Anastaise (Michaud) Madore.

Mrs. Gingrow was a graduate of Cony High School, class of 1946, and was a communicant of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and St. Theresa's Church in Belleview.

She was a homemaker most of her life, but also worked for the state Department of Agriculture for more than 20 years and previously was a volunteer at Lithgow Library in Augusta and Hubbard Free Library in Hallowell.

Mrs. Gingrow was also a member of the Friends of the Belleview Library in Florida.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Theodore T. Gingrow of Hallowell and Belleview; six daughters, Ann M. Corbett and her husband, Jim, of West Gardiner, Mary M. Gingrow-Shaw and her husband, Ernie, of Augusta, Frances G. Newman and her husband, Jeff, of Windsor, Susan G. Myers and her husband, Dennis, of Gainesville, Fla., Elizabeth Heath and her husband, Michael, of Gardiner, and Jean A. Cote and her husband, Joseph Cote Jr., of Houston; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Friday at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallowell. Burial will be in Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, at a later date.

Those who desire may make donations to Hubbard Free Library, 115 Second St., Hallowell 04347.

Muriel Grace Quirion

1918-2002

AUGUSTA — Muriel Grace Quirion, 84, of Augusta, died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at Nicholson's Longterm Care Facility in Winthrop following a long illness. She was born in Augusta, April 10, 1918, a daughter of Blaine S. and Edith (Clark) Worthley. Muriel was a graduate of Cony High School and Gates Business College.

She married Lionel J. Quirion of Waterville, Jan. 11, 1949; he died in January of 1993. Muriel was employed by the Internal Revenue Service, Small Business Administration and Selective Service before retiring from federal service in 1973. She was active in the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) for many years.

After retirement, Muriel and her husband, Lionel, enjoyed several years of managing an oceanside motel at Longboat Key, Fla. They also enjoyed spending some additional years in Sarasota, Fla.

"Auntnie" (as she was known to her family) loved her gardens and flowers, and taught her niece, Janice, how to enjoy the beauty of God's world. Muriel was a woman of great courage throughout a long illness and was a kind and thoughtful friend to many.

She was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy M. Hinkley. She will be lovingly remembered by her niece, Janice Muriel Hinkley Anderson and her husband, Frederick E. Anderson, of Winthrop; and great-nephews Stephen K. Anderson of Wilmington, N.C., and Jeffrey S. Anderson and his wife, Beth, of Ashville, N.C.

Visiting hours, funeral and committal service to be announced. Arrangements are by Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin Road, Winthrop.
