Dr. Robert H. Farris

1931-2003

MANCHESTER, N.H. —Dr. Robert H. Farris, Ph.D., a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel, died at a Manchester hospital on Sept. 23, 2003.

He was born Aug. 17, 1931, in Eastport, Maine, to Arthur M. Farris and Mary Mitchell Henry. He attended local schools and graduated from Shead High School in 1947. He attended Bates College before joining the Air Force.

After his initial tour of duty, he returned to Maine and worked with Inland Fishery. Returning to the Air Force, he graduated from officer candidate school with a commission and served 27 years, including two tours in Vietnam. He continued his education, receiving his B.A. and M.P.S., and in 1974 he earned his doctor of philosophy degree from the University of Notre Dame.

After he retired from the Air Force, he worked several years for the Maine Department of Transportation.

On March 21, 2001, he married his childhood sweetheart, Marilyn (Mim) Brooks, who survives him. He is also survived by two sisters, Hazel Schoonover of Chico, Calif., and Helen Hadley of Odessa, Texas, and several nieces, nephews and cousins, including James and Paul Lowe of Eastport.

He was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Pauline Keesee; and two sons, Robert Melville and James Alan Farris.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, at Washington Street Baptist Church, Eastport.

Rob had many fond memories of time spent at the Baptist Youth Camp, which is located in Charlotte, Maine. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Baptist Youth Camp in care of Ralph Hicks, 87 Clark St., Eastport 04631.

Cate & Johnson Funeral Service of Manchester, N.H., is directing arrangements.

William Schmucker

1939-2003

AUGUSTA — William "Bill" Davidson Schmucker, 64, of Cedar Street in Augusta, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003, at Maine Medical Center in Portland after a brief illness.

He was born April 11, 1939, in Islip, N.Y., to Herman Otto Schmucker and Anna Patricia Davidson-Schmucker, both of Islip.

He graduated from Islip High School in 1957. He was a naval veteran who served on the USS Turner, Sixth Fleet, out of Mayport, Fla. He left the military as an E-5 engineer with high honors. After his time in the service, he became an independent tractor-trailer driver for close to 30 years, with an almost flawless driving record. He moved to Maine in 1980 and enjoyed the area's comfortable pace and lifestyle, as well as its gracious people. He also worked for a short while at Jon Canty Construction in West Gardiner.

He is survived by his brothers, Mike Schmucker of Jefferson, Ga., Bob Schmucker of Warner-Robins, Ga., Jim Schmucker of Miami, Fla., and Joseph Schmucker of Athens, Ga.; and his sister Pat Scotto of East Haddam, Conn.

Bill also enjoyed many happy hours of football games, camping, fishing, storytelling, and video and card games with his seven children, William Schmucker Jr. (who passed away in 1984), of Jacksonville, Fla., Bruce Schmucker of Jacksonville, Brian Schmucker of Jacksonville, Danielle Poetzsch-Gnidziejko of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Patrica Schmucker-Rines of Augusta, Jennifer Schmucker-Parlin of Richmond and Diane Schmucker of Gardiner.

Bill also leaves behind his two daughters-in-law, Sylvia Schmucker and Mayla Schmucker, both of Jacksonville; his two sons-in-law, Kevin Parlin of Richmond and Andy Gnidziejko of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; and future son-in- law Paul Riddle of Augusta. He also leaves behind his most cherished grandchildren, Morgan Alexis Rines, Matthew David Rines, Brittany Jade Parlin, Maya Lauryn Parlin, Hailey Marie Barrett, Kyle Schmucker, Erica Schmucker, Katelyn Schmucker, Mason Schmucker and William Lee Schmucker, and honorary grandson Joey Gates. He also leaves his beloved feline companion of five years, Nebill.

Bill will always be remembered as a hard worker who was a very devoted father and grandfather. He was very proud of each one of his family members. He will be remembered as a warm, positive and very loving individual. He had a big heart and made every friend feel like a part of the family. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten, as his presence was unsurpassed by all who knew and loved him. He will go down in our family's history as the World's Champion Skip-Bo Player. "After a while, crocodile."

Visiting hours will be 4-7 p.m. Sunday at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner, where a funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday. Committal services will follow with military honors provided by the Navy and the Kennebec County Honor Guard at the new Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.

The family prefers that any donations be mailed to Patty Rines, 29 Cedar St., Augusta 04330. All donations will help pay funeral expenses and will be greatly appreciated.

Carol M. Weatherhead

1927-2003

JEFFERSON — Carol May Weatherhead, 76, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003, at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.

Carol was born a daughter of Robert R. and Olive R. Colby Webber, on March 23, 1927, in Warner, N.H., where she attended and graduated from schools.

She worked as a bookkeeper in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. On July 15, 1966, she married Stuart Weatherhead and they made their home in North Reading, Mass. In 1971 they moved, along with their children, to Jefferson.

Being a gifted craftsperson, Carol sold her work all over the country. She enjoyed doing crafts, her children and her great-grandchild. She was a member and past matron of the Lakeview 179 Order of the Eastern Star and also was a past member of the Willow Grange in Jefferson.

She is survived by her loving husband of 37 years, Stuart Weatherhead of Jefferson; children William McManus of Bradenton, Fla., Eddie McManus of Augusta and Tom McManus of Milford, Mass.; stepchildren Michael Weatherhead of Jefferson, and Pamela Gesualdo and her husband, Richard, of North Reading, Mass.; brothers Roger Webber of Greenwoods, Fla., and Bill Webber of Grovetown, Ga.; sister Arlen Bagley of Bradford, N.H.; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a date and time to be announced.

Arrangements are under the care of Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.

L. Jerome Audet

WATERVILLE — L. Jerome Audet, 71, of Waterville, died Monday, June 5, 2000, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was born Aug. 1, 1928, in Skowhegan, son of Ludovic and Marie (Lapointe) Audet. He graduated from the University of Maine at Orono, earning a master's degree in education in 1967, and taught in the public school system for 35 years, retiring in 1988.

He taught in Rockland, at Besse High School in Albion, and at Winslow Junior High School. During this time, he also coached basketball and served as principal.

He was active in community civic organizations, including the Jaycees and Waterville Lions Club, which he had served in the capacity of secretary for the past 15 years.

He was a member of Waterville Elks Lodge 905, which he served as treasurer and past exalted ruler, and a member of the Waterville Knights of Columbus.

He was a very generous and giving person — and was always ready to lend a helping hand.

He was predeceased by his wife, Joyce Audet, who died in 1989; and two brothers, Robert and Louie Audet.

Survivors include a son, Joe Champagne, of California; two stepdaughters, Stephanie Carter, of China, and Lisa Collins, of Unity; two sisters, Bernadette Dolloff, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Barbara Tracy, of Waterville; 10 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 8, with Waterville Elks Lodge 905 performing the Lodge of Sorrow at 7 p.m., at Veilleux Funeral Home, 8 Elm St., Waterville.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, June 9, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Pleasant Street, Waterville. Burial and committal prayers will follow at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, Grove Street, Waterville.

Memorial donations may be made in his memory to Servants of the Blessed Sacrament, 101 Silver St., Waterville ME 04901.

Georgia A. Collins

RANGELEY — Georgia A. Collins, 45, died Friday, June 2, 2000, at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington.

She was born July 17, 1954, in Jacksonville, Fla., daughter of George Ham and Juanice (Padgett) Stuart. She attended schools in South Kingston, R.I. She married Eddie Collins on Oct. 6, 1970, in Narragansett, R.I.

She was employed for several years for the town of Rangeley as a secretary and for A-One Builders as a secretary. For the past two years, she was employed at People's Choice Restaurant as the assistant manager.

She was a member of the Rangeley Fire Department Ladies' Auxiliary and a past member of Rangeley Pythian Sisters. She loved to go to and watch car races, loved to crochet, knit, gardening, her flower garden, spoil the grandchildren and collect Elvis memorabilia.

Survivors include her husband, Edwin "Eddie" Collins Sr., of Rangeley; her mother, Juanice, and stepfather, Raymond Stuart, of DeFuniak Springs, Fla.; a daughter, Victoria, and her husband, Peter Lodise, of East Meadow, N.Y.; a son, Edwin Collins Jr., and his wife, Michelle, of Rangeley; four brothers, Billy Stuart, of Opp, Ala., Larry Stuart, of Ohio, Phillip Stuart, of Arkansas, and Wayne Spence, of Dallas, Texas; a sister, Patty Hollenbeck, of California; five grandchildren, Jacqueline Cooke, Dylan Lodise, Ashley Collins, Jordan Collins and Kylie Collins.

Visiting hours will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, at Rangeley Baptist Church in Rangeley, where a funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 8. Arrangements are by Adams Funeral Home of Farmington.

Friends who wish may make donations in her memory to Coolies Anemia Foundation, c/o People's Choice Restaurant, PO Box 988, Rangeley ME 04970.

June E. Curtis

UNITY — June E. Curtis, 65, recently of Billerica, Mass., died unexpectedly Sunday, June 4, 2000, at a Belfast hospital.

She was born Aug. 16, 1934, in Belfast, daughter of Nathan and Matte Mae (Moody) Miller. Her husband, Cecil Curtis, died several years ago.

She was a bus driver for a special needs organization for a number of years in the Billerica area and more recently was employed in a nursing home. She moved to Unity in May to be with her family. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting.

Survivors include three sons, William Raven, and wife, Juanita, of Unity, John Curtis, of Frankfort, and Keith Curtis, and wife, Jackie, of Massachusetts; a daughter, Sally Olive, of Revere, Mass.; three sisters, Evelyn Brown, of Hampden, Dorothy Seekins, and husband, Horace, of Stockton Springs, Katherine Muise, and husband, Bob, of Saugus, Mass., and 11 grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a brother, Roger Miller.

There will be no services in Maine. Her cremated remains will be placed with her husband's remains at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett, Mass. Arrangements are by Lawry Brothers Funeral Home of Unity.

Phillip G. Fletcher

WATERVILLE — Phillip Gordon Fletcher, 64, of Waterville, died at home early Monday, June 5, 2000, following a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Aug. 14, 1935, in North Anson, son of the late Roland C. and Esther (Wells) Fletcher. He married Alayne Buzzell on Sept. 26, 1954.

Phil and his family resided for 21 years in Massachusetts, where he was involved with race cars. Twenty-three years ago, they moved back to Maine and have resided in Waterville ever since.

For the past 22 years, Phil was employed by the Waterville Public Works Department as foreman at the central garage. He was very active and was past president of the Anson-North Anson Snowmobile Club.

He was also central region director of the Maine Snowmobile Association, and an active member of Kennebec Valley Trails Inc. and ATOMS Antique Car Club.

Phil was known to spend countless hours in his garage at home tinkering on his friends' automobiles. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Ellen Therrien.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Alayne Fletcher, of Waterville; two sons, Dennis Fletcher, and wife, Donna, of Norton, Mass., and Wayne Fletcher, and wife, Gretchen, of Gorham; five grandchildren, Dawn Fletcher, of Norton, Mass., Ryan, Aaron, Kaitlyn and Jason Fletcher, all of Gorham; his mother-in-law, Minerva Buzzell, of Anson; a special cousin, Joyce Burton, of Scarborough; a brother-in-law, Clinton Buzzell, and wife, Helen, of Anson; two sisters-in-law, Ramona Everett, and husband, Alfred, of Anson, and Roberta Duhaime, of Weston, Mass.; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; and a very good friend, Darwood Corey, of Waterville.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main St., Fairfield.

A funeral celebration will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 8, at United Baptist Church, Church Street, Oakland, with the Rev. Andrew Kane officiating.

Cremation will follow at Gracelawn Memorial Park in Auburn. His interment will be made at Sunset Cemetery in North Anson.

Donations in his memory may be made to either the Anson-North Anson Snowmobile Equipment Fund, c/o Dot Friend, PO Box 437, Anson ME 04911; or Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 44 Binney St., Boston MA 02115-6068.

Okson O. Jones

WINSLOW — Okson O. Jones, 59, of Winslow, died Monday, June 5, 2000, at Thayer Unit, MaineGeneral Medical Center, Waterville.

She was born Oct. 26, 1940, in Wonsan, North Korea, daughter of Chong and Chom Pun (Kim) Om. She married Raymond P. Jones in January 1970 in Seoul, Korea.

Survivors include her husband of Winslow; a son, Bill Jones, of New York City; a sister, Ok Ja Om, of Chorwon, South Korea; and several cousins.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, at Redington Funeral Home, 5 Park St., Waterville, where a funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 7.

Burial will be made at 10 a.m. Friday, June 9, at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Old Belgrade Road, Augusta.

Emeline P. Merrill

BRUNSWICK — Emeline P. Merrill, 89, of 59 Jordan Ave., died Saturday, June 3, 2000, at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

She was born June 23, 1910, in Bristol, daughter of Harrison and Annie (Munro) Marsh, and attended Bristol schools. She married Earl Merrill in January 1932 in North Conway, N.H. He died in 1959.

The Merrills lived in North Conway prior to moving to Brunswick in 1942. Emeline was employed at the Brunswick Record for many years, retiring in 1965.

She was a member of the 55 Plus Club and Bath Coasters.

She is survived by a daughter, Joyce E. Breder, of Cranberry, N.J.; two sons, Wayne R. Merrill, of Brewer, and Carl H. Merrill, of South Harpswell; a sister, Hazel Allan, of North Conway; 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

A son, M. Heinie Merrill, died Oct. 30, 1999.

Visiting hours were held Monday at Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal St., Brunswick. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 6, at First Parish Church, Maine Street, Brunswick, with the Rev. Dr. William C. Imes officiating. Burial will be made in Riverside Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 52 Federal St., Brunswick ME 04011.
