Doris L. Nickerson

WATERVILLE — Doris L. Nickerson, 97, widow of Dr. Kermit S. Nickerson, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, in Waterville.

She was born March 17, 1903, in Winterport, daughter of Charles and Eda (Young) Clements, and graduated from Winterport High School in 1922 and from Eastern State Normal School in Castine in 1924. She taught elementary school in South Lincoln, Auburn and Waterville.

In 1928, she married Dr. Kermit S. Nickerson in Winterport and moved from Oakland to Waterville. Dr. Nickerson was superintendent of schools in Oakland and then in Waterville and served as Maine's commissioner of education. He died in 1982.

She was a member of Pleasant Street United Methodist Church for many years as well as the United Methodist Women. She was an active volunteer in the Waterville Woman's Club serving on the library and music committees.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Norris Clements, and her sister, Helen Roderick.

Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn N. Card, of Wellington, Colo.; a son, Clement A. Nickerson, of Brunswick, and Brooksville, Fla.; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 17, at Greenlawn Cemetery in Swanville. Arrangements are by Redington Funeral Home of Waterville.

If desired, memorial donations may be made to the United Methodist Women, c/o United Methodist Church, 61 Pleasant St., Waterville ME 04901.

Malcolm R. Paine

PALMYRA — Malcolm R. "Mac" Paine, 75, of Palmyra, died unexpectedly Sunday, June 11, 2000, at a Pittsfield hospital.

He was born March 8, 1925, in Charleston, son of Lyndall and Lillian (Russell) Paine, and attended Charleston and East Corinth schools, graduating from East Corinth Academy, class of 1943. He was an U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, entering the service directly following graduation from high school and served for three years.

He married Carlista Early on May 19, 1946.

Mac was an used car dealer in the Newport and Palmyra area for over 48 years. In his early years in the car business, he and his father had a Pontiac and GMC dealership in Newport. He then went into business for himself and sold used cars, and lawn and garden tractors in both Newport and then in Palmyra. During his years in the car business, Mac was associated with Linnehan Auto in Bangor and for many years with Hartley's in Newport.

Mac liked making things with wood and, for the past several years, he owned and operated Country Wood-N-Things in Palmyra. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Newport, where he served 20 years as a deacon.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Carlista "Clis" Paine, of Palmyra; his stepmother, Pauline Paine, of Newport; two daughters, Sharon M. O'Leary, and her life partner, Joe Daley, of Windham, and Sandra, and her husband, Valmore Buckland, of Hurricane, W.Va.; a half-sister, Evelyn Hawthorne, of Newport; four grandchildren, Rachel Welch, of Bangor, Rebecca Thibodeau, of Kenduskeag, Shelley Scarbro, of Lavallette, W.Va., Sherri Chapman, of Hurricane; seven great-grandchildren, Brooke Scarbro and Bently Scarbro, both of Lavallette, Chely Thibodeau, of Kenduskeag, Caleb Chapman, Emily Chapman and Samuel Chapman, all of Hurricane, and Chelsea Welch, of Bangor; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He will be remembered by special friends, Warren and Cindy Noyes, and their family, of Newport.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, at Brown Funeral Home, 24 High St., Newport.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 15, at Calvary Baptist Church, Grove Street, Newport, with pastor Michael Stephenson officiating. Burial will follow in the family lot at Corinthian Cemetery in East Corinth.

Friends who wish may make memorial donations to the Calvary Baptist Church, Expansion Building Fund, 29 Grove St., Newport ME 04953. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Paulina (Taylor) Paradis

WATERVILLE — Paulina (Taylor) Paradis, 62, of Waterville, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at Lakewood Manor nursing home in Waterville after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born Oct. 22, 1937, in Hallowell, daughter of William Taylor and Dorothy (Barry) Lewis, of Augusta.

She married Roger J. Paradis, of Winslow, on June 8, 1968, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Winslow.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Fairfield and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in Winslow.

She enjoyed embroidery, puzzles and quiet scenic rides to the coast and boat rides and get-togethers on Snow Pond. Next to her family, her biggest joy was her native American heritage, attending several pow-wows and gatherings.

Survivors include her loving husband, Roger J. Paradis, of Waterville; her mother, Dorothy Lewis, of North Carolina; two sons, Donald Paradis, of Oakland, and Paul Paradis, of Waterville; three daughters, Donna West, of Chelsea, Paula Cates, of St. Albans, and Rhonda Murray, of Lompoc, Calif.; a brother, Herbert Taylor, of Mocksville, N.C.; a sister, Dolly Bibber, of Florida; 17 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. She assisted in raising one of her grandsons, David Paradis, of Waterville.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, and Thursday, June 15, at Veilleux Funeral Home, 8 Elm St., Waterville.

Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 19, at St. Francis Cemetery, Grove Street, Waterville.

Yvonne M. Pomerleau

WATERVILLE — Yvonne M. Pomerleau, 95, who resided at 93 Western Ave., died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at Oak Grove nursing home in Waterville.

She was born June 21, 1904, in St. Come, Quebec, Canada, daughter of Joseph and Odelinda (Rodrigue) Veilleux Vigue.

She married Wilfrid Pomerleau 48 years ago. He died in 1974. She was a housewife most of her life and a Waterville resident, and a devoted lifelong member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. She was a member of the St. Anne Society and a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Chapel.

Survivors include a son, Roland J. Pomerleau, and wife, Sunny, and one daughter, Juliette Pomerleau Henchey, and husband, John; six grandchildren, Brenda Pomerleau Breton and Debra Pomerleau Lemieux, Michael, Paul, Johnny Henchey, Teresa Henchey De Bendictis, and eight great-grandchildren; one loving sister, Florence Lessard, and two sisters-in-law, Dorielle Vigue and Marrietta Lessard Vigue.

At her request there will be no visiting hours.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 15, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Elm Street, Waterville.

Burial and committal prayers will follow at St. Francis Cemetery, Grove Street, Waterville. Arrangements are by Veilleux Funeral Home of Waterville.

Memorial donations may be made to Servants of the Blessed Sacrament, 101 Silver St., Waterville ME 04901.

Eleanor A. Russell

NEW SHARON — Eleanor A. Russell, 87, of New Sharon, died at Sandy River Center for Health Care on Friday, June 9, 2000, following a long illness.

She was born Nov. 20, 1912, in Kezar Falls, daughter of Frank and Anne (Kelly) Wescott. She was educated at Farmington Normal School, graduating with a teaching degree.

She taught in New Sharon and later in Paris. She also was a beautician, owning her own shop in Norway.

In 1954, she married Gleason E. Russell. They made their home in Miami, Fla., for 23 years, moving in 1976 to New Sharon.

She enjoyed golf, being around children, and riding around the country roads.

She was predeceased by a sister, Frances Jack, of Pensacola, Fla.; and her husband, Gleason Russell.

At the request of the family, there will be no visitation hours. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Adams Funeral Home of Farmington.

Remembrances may be made in her memory to the Maine Alzheimer's Association, 163 Lancaster St. Suite 160B, Portland ME 04101-2406.

Kenneth A. Schmitz

SKOWHEGAN — Kenneth A. Schmitz, 83, of Skowhegan, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at Cedar Ridge nursing home in Skowhegan.

He was born July 24, 1917, in Skowhegan, son of Herbert and Myrtie Schmitz, and attended Skowhegan schools. He served in the U.S. Navy Seabees during World War II.

He had served as treasurer of the Waterville Carpenters Union local for 15 years and was a self-employed carpenter for 20 years. He also owned and operated Merit Swimming Pools for 25 years.

Ken enjoyed square dancing, roller skating, traveling and woodworking.

Ken is survived by his wife of 48 years, Paulette (Paulie); six children, Bruce Schmitz, of Washington, D.C., Brian Schmitz, and wife, Julie, of Connecticut, Wayne Schmitz, of Georgia, Lou-Anne Shaw, of Carmel, Scott Schmitz, and wife, Lena, of Mechanic Falls, and Randy Schmitz, and wife, Lori, of Waterville; a brother, Maynard Schmitz, of Maryland; and a sister, Gladys Libby, of Skowhegan; nine grandchildren, Jessica, Alex, Nicholas, Emily, Keith, Kelly, Kyle, Jacqueline, and Aaron; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Catherine Gullifer and Lillian Bloomquist.

There will be no visitation. A memorial Mass celebrating his life will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 16, at Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church, Water Street, Skowhegan, with the Rev. Marcel Chouinard officiating.

Burial will follow at 1 p.m. at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Old Belgrade Road, Augusta.

Arrangements entrusted to the care of Pine State Cremation Service, 1-800-769-6371.

Ruby A. Cross

BRIGHTON PLANTATION —Ruby A. Cross, 84, of Brighton, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at Cedar Ridge Nursing Care Center in Skowhegan.

She was born Oct. 24, 1915, in Athens, daughter of Maurice and Beulah (Thompson) Small, and attended Athens and Brighton Plantation schools.

She married Willard Cross on April 22, 1935, in Athens. He died May 14, 1997.

She was a homemaker all her married life. She had served as the plantation tax collector for Brighton for many years.

She was a longtime member of the Wellington Evangelical Church, which she attended regularly. She loved growing flowers and was noted for her beautiful flower gardens. She was a great lover of the Lord and was always trying to lead people to the Lord.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Greta and John McCue, of Brighton; three grandchildren, Pam Fox, of Wellington, Tim McCue and wife, Janice, of Presque Isle, and Faith Bussell and husband, Darrell, of Harmony; two great-grandsons, Daniel McCue, of Presque Isle, and Adrian Bussell, of Harmony, both of whom she loved dearly; several nieces and nephews. She loved her two cats, Callie and Susie Q.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, at Mount Rest Cemetery in Athens. Arrangements are by Smart & Edwards Funeral Home of Skowhegan.

Donations may be made in her memory to the Harmony Ambulance Service, 100 Ham Hill Road, Cambridge ME 04923.

Lawrence E. Glidden

PALERMO — Lawrence Eugene "Gene" Glidden, 47, of Southern Oaks Drive, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta Campus, from complications of a brainstem hemorrhage that he suffered Thursday, Aug. 10.

Born Nov. 28, 1952, in Waterville, he was the son of Lawrence Madison and Flora Marie (Phillips) Glidden. Gene graduated from Erskine Academy in South China in 1971 after attending Palermo Consolidated School.

He received an associate's degree in civil engineering from the University of Maine after serving two years in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era.

He married Janet S. Achterberg on June 29, 1985, in Flower Mound, Texas. Gene and his wife moved 15 years ago back to Maine, living previously in Dallas and Houston, Texas, as well as Washington, D.C.

Gene was a small-engine mechanic, operating Glidden's Small Engine Repair in his shop at home.

He loved racing and motorcycle riding. Gene also enjoyed tractors, fast boats, and the outdoors.

His parents both died previously.

Surviving are his wife, Janet A. Glidden, of Palermo; a son, Kevin E. Glidden and his fiancée, Patty Philbrook, of West Gardiner; two sisters, Pat Clark and husband, Clair "Chief", of Hedgesville, W.Va., and Laraine Glidden and husband, Merrill Hall, of Yarmouth; two stepbrothers, Frederick H. Allen, of Portland, and Kenneth C. Allen and wife, Cynthia, of Sebago; his stepfather, Frederick N. Allen, of Gorham; his mother-in-law, Anita Achterberg, of Pueblo, Colo.; his brother-in-law, David Achterberg and wife, Elaine, of Littleton, Colo.; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, two nieces, and many friends.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, at Gray & Pratt Funeral Home, Windsor Neck Road, Windsor.

A graveside committal service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, at Chadwick Hill Cemetery, Route 32, South China, with the Rev. Winifred Reynolds officiating.

If desired, the family suggests memorial gifts to Windsor Volunteer Ambulance Association, PO Box 46, Windsor ME 04363.
