Gladys M. Jones

ST. ALBANS — Gladys M. Jones, 91, wife of the late Frederick Jones, died Monday morning, Feb. 5, 2001, at Sanfield Rehab & Living Center in Hartland.

She was born Sept. 6, 1909, in St. Albans, daughter of Earle and Etta (Farrar) Weeks. She attended a one-room schoolhouse in Ripley. After raising her large family, she was employed as a housekeeper at the Scott-Webb Hospital in Hartland and continued there when it changed to Sanfield Nursing Home until her retirement.

She was an avid reader and cook, making biscuits, rolls, doughnuts and molasses cookies. She enjoyed her garden, flowers and watching the birds. She made many quilts and rugs for her family. She also enjoyed riding and only needed to be asked and she was ready to go on long or short trips.

Survivors include her four daughters, Maxine Ervin, of Corrina, Marjorie Weeman, of St. Albans, Shirley Hewins, of Palmyra, Faye and Andy Lawrence, of St. Albans; eight sons, Earle, of St. Albans, Maurice and his wife, Diana, of Harmony, Frederick and his wife, Janice, of St. Albans, Clarence and his wife, Gloria, of Canaan, Ralph and his wife, Ann, of Bancroft, Edwin and his wife, Phyllis, of Hartland, David and his wife, Jantha, of St. Albans, Richard and his wife, Ann, of Palmyra; 31 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

She also leaves a friend, former daughter-in-law, Eloise Jones, of Corinna; three nephews and several cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, Frederick, in 1949; son, Herbert, in 1958, two infant children and two sons-in-law, Earl Ervin, in 1983, and Leonard Weeman, in 1988; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and her only brother, John Weeks, in 1998.

Family and friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, with a funeral at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, at the D.H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield, with Pastor Jamie Cahill officiating. Spring burial will take place at the Village Cemetery in St. Albans.

At the families request, donations may be made in her memory to the Sanfield Rehab & Living Center, Attn: Cynthia Libby, 47 Main St., Hartland ME 04943.

Evelyn L. Pottle

SOLON — Evelyn Lenora Pottle, 71, a 15-year resident of Solon, previously residing in Starks, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at the Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan.

She was born Sept. 8, 1929, in Solon, the daughter of Truman and Beulah (Jackson) Berry, and graduated from Solon High School. She attended Central Maine Vocational Technical Institute in Fairfield.

She married Frank W. Pottle, Feb. 14, 1961, in Skowhegan.

Evelyn had been employed as a CMA (certified medical assistant) at Maplecrest Rehabilitation & Living Center in Madison and retired in 1995 after 15 years of employment at Cedar Ridge Center for Health Care & Rehabilitation in Skowhegan.

She was a member of the Kennebec Valley Grange of Madison and volunteered for the Helping Hands organization of Starks.

Survivors include her husband, Frank W. Pottle, of Solon; two daughters, Sandra Belyea, and her husband, Charles, of Starks, and Cindy Doyon and her husband, Claude, of Wilton; son, Anthony Pottle and his wife, Candace, of Frisco, Texas; six grandchildren; a sister, Loretta Andrews and her husband, Kenneth, of Bingham, and a brother, Murray Berry, of Lewiston.

There will be no funeral or memorial service; arrangements are by Giberson Funeral Home of Madison.

Austin W. Brown Jr.

CORNVILLE — Austin W. "Bud" Brown Jr., 79, of West Ridge Road in Cornville, formerly of Oxbow Lane in Dover, N.H., died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was born in Exeter, N.H., son of Austin W. Brown Sr. and Florence (Pickering) Brown, and graduated from Exeter High School in 1939.

After high school, he was employed at Exeter Brass Works as supervisor. In 1946 he made a career transition to GE Corporation located in Somersworth, N.H. Within one year with GE, he quickly progressed to lead foreman and later to production manager until retirement in 1984.

He was an outdoor enthusiast and life member of the National Rifle Association. He especially loved his hunting and fishing trips with his friends and family. But, most of all he enjoyed the time he spent with his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia (Rainville) Brown; son, Barry R. Weeks Sr. and his wife, Patricia, of Rollinsford, N.H.; daughter, Marie R. Vermette, of Barrington, N.H.; son, Richard H. Weeks II and his wife, Lorin, of Dublin, Ohio; daughter, Therese I. Jones, of Barrington, N.H.; son, Raymond Brown and his wife, Christine, of Simi Valley, Calif.; and daughter, Francis McNeal, of Mountainburg, Ark.; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Pearl Johnson.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family. Roberge Funeral Home, High Street, Somersworth, N.H., assisted with arrangements. Memorials in his name may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Lloyd Hayden

SKOWHEGAN — Lloyd Hayden, 49, of Skowhegan, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Thayer Unit, Waterville.

He was born May 31, 1951, in Hartland, son of Chrystal (Corson) Hayden and Leon Hayden.

Lloyd was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He married Gwendolyn (Whiting) Hayden, March 6, 1976.

He was employed as a truck driver.

He loved to hunt and fish but hunting was his favorite.

Survivors include his wife, Gwendolyn Hayden, of Skowhegan; four stepchildren, Troy Lake and Bonnie Lake, of Lewiston, Melinda Lake, of Dixfield, Janice Bryant, of Oxford; six grandchildren, Jasmine, Desirae, Brianna, Bryant, Tyler and Garrett; his mother, Chrystal Hayden, of East Livermore; six sisters, Darlene Dutil, of Winslow, Doreen Bickford, of Georgia, Louise Perkins, of Oxford, Cheryl Sargeant, of Limington, Celia Buzzell, of Gray, Rolanda Hayden, of East Livermore; one brother, Ricky, of Minnesota; several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, with the funeral at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 4, at the Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 261 Madison Ave., Skowhegan, with the Rev. Mark Tanner officiating. Burial will take place later at the Pine Grove Cemetery.

Leone M. Huff

GUILFORD/SANGERVILLE — Leone M. Huff, 95, formerly of Guilford and Sangerville, died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at a Greenville nursing home.

She was born Sept. 5, 1905, in Fort Kent, daughter of Joseph and Martha (Albert) Babin. She graduated from the Madawaska Training School in Fort Kent, Presque Isle Normal School and then from Castine Normal School. She taught school in her younger years and later worked at Hardwood Products in Guilford for over 40 years.

She was a communicant of Holy Family Catholic Church in Sangerville and a member of the Catholic Ladies Club. She was proud to be a member of the Maine and National Teachers Associations. She was so appreciative of her friends and neighbors who helped make it possible for her to live alone for so many years.

She is survived by three sons and their wives, Duane and Kathy Huff, of Guilford and Florida, Wayne and Melanie Huff of Monson, and Dale and Ann Huff, of Millinocket and Abbot Village; a sister, Helen Klemek, of Ohio; a brother, Wilfred Babin, of Monson; 15 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren; a cousin, Corinne Bearce, of Dover-Foxcroft; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Orman Huff; a sister, Verna; a brother, Lawrence; and a grandson, Doug.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 5, at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 21 Oak St., Guilford. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, April 6, at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Sangerville with the Rev. James Robichaud officiating. Spring burial will be held at the Rural Grove Cemetery in Dover-Foxcroft.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations to the Catholic Ladies Club, c/o Martha Danforth, PO Box 675, Guilford ME 04443.

Muriel Kiesow

CHINA — Muriel Kiesow, 82, of China, died Monday, April 2, 2001, at the Oak Grove Nursing Care Center in Waterville.

She was born June 23, 1918, in Hartford, Conn., daughter of William H. and Mary V. (Cowell) Schremmer.

She was a member of the China Baptist Church and the China American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include four sons, John, Bruce and Robert, of China, and Gary, of Augusta; one sister, June Kerr, of Texas, and one brother, Harold Schremmer, of Rhode Island; four grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a time to be announced at the China Baptist Church with the Rev. Ron Morrell, pastor, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Redington Funeral Home in Waterville.

Kenneth L. Legg

WESTBOROUGH, Mass. —Kenneth L. Legg, 80, of 2 Flanders Road in Westborough, died Sunday afternoon, April 1, 2001, at the Westborough Healthcare Center after a period of failing health. He was the husband of Eleanor C. (Carroll) Legg. He had been a resident of Westborough since 1960.

He was born April 25, 1920, in Jamaica, Long Island, N.Y., the son of the late Charles and Louise (Weidmann) Legg. He attended North Attleboro school and graduated from North Attleboro High School in 1938 in Massachusetts. During World War II, he served in the Pacific Theatre with the U.S. Navy as a radioman first class.

He was employed as an administrator and salesman with Western Union in Taunton and Worcester for 31 years. Later he was employed for 11 years at State Mutual Insurance in communications before retiring in 1980.

Since 1960 he was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Westborough where he started as a lay reader then became a junior and senior warden, and a chairperson of various nominating committees. He participated on two Diocesan Committees at the request of the Bishop. He also served as Chalice Bearer and Crucifer.

Kenneth had been a member of the King David Lodge A.F.&A.M. in Taunton for over 45 years and was affiliated with the Siloam Lodge in Westborough. He was a former leader and chairman of Boy Scout Troop 22 where two of his sons were awarded the Eagle Scout and also assisted in many programs with Algonquin Council Boy Scouts of America in Framingham.

He served on the Council On Aging and was active in the planning and building of the Senior Center and was the past president of the "Friends of the Senior Center," all in Westborough.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Robert K. Legg, of Derry, N.H., Donald B. Legg, of Springfield, Va., Douglas R. Legg, of Waterville, Maine, and David M. Legg, of Orlando, Fla.; four brothers, Charles F. Legg Jr., of North Attleboro, Merrill A. Legg, of Temecula, Calif., Norman E. Legg, of Wiscasset, Maine, and Ronald W. Legg, of North Attleboro; one sister, Corinne Svendsen, of Brewster, Mass.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Curtis C. Legg.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 5, at the Rand-Harper-Pickering Westborough Funeral Home, 62 West Main St., Westborough.

His funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 6, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 3 John St., Westborough. Interment will be private at the Hillside Cemetery in Auburn.

Ellen F. Washburn

LIVERMORE FALLS — Ellen F. Washburn, 82, of Livermore Falls, died late Sunday night, April 1, 2001, in the comfort of her home home on Munsey Avenue with her family at her side.

She was born Jan. 9, 1918, at Kittery Point, the daughter of Charles G. and Cordelia (Wildes) Tobey. She attended schools in Beverly, Mass., graduating from Beverly High School, class of 1935. She continued her education at Hawthorne Business School in Salem, Mass.

She was employed at a fish market in Salem, Mass., and moved back to Kittery Point where she was employed by a finance company. She retired from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard after 20 years of service and on Aug. 25, 1962, married S. Paul Washburn at the Kittery Point Congregational Church.

After moving to Livermore Falls, she was one of the first employees during the construction of the Androscoggin Mill, International Paper Co., and worked in the engineering department. She later was a bookkeeper for New England Furniture Co. and Dunton Department Stores in Livermore Falls.

She joined, by baptism, the First Baptist Church in Livermore Falls and for many years served as the Financial Secretary of the church. She was also an active member of the American Baptist Women. She was active in many fraternal organizations. She was a 50-year member of the Rebekahs, the Order of the Eastern Star and Pythian Sisters. She was a past president of The Rebekah Assembly of Maine, a Past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star in both Kittery and Livermore Falls, and was a secretary of the local lodge of Pythian Sisters. She served as secretary and treasurer of the Northeast Odd Fellows Association, an association of members from the New England States and the Provinces of Quebec and the Atlantic Provinces. She is the last surviving charter member of the Nurses Training Scholarship Fund, a program supported by Maine Odd Fellows and Rebekahs to relieve a nursing shortage in the state. This program originated in 1957. She has been a member ever since and has been secretary for many years.

Ellen enjoyed participating in family activities, especially at Thanksgiving and Christmas. She enjoyed her camp at Sebec Lake, and both school and family reunions. Ellen's angel food cakes were in demand at fraternal and church activities throughout the years.

She is survived by her husband, S. Paul Washburn, of Livermore Falls; her brother, Charles G. Tobey Jr. and his wife, Alice Tobey, of Eliot; four nephews, one niece, one cousin, eight grandnephews and -nieces and three great-grandnephews and -nieces.

Family and friends are invited to call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, at the Wiles Funeral Home, 308 Franklin Road (Rte. 133), Jay. In the evening Tuesday, members of the OES Mt. Olivet Chapter 29 of Auburn will have a service followed by Charity Rebekah Lodge 6.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, from the First Baptist Church, Church Street, Livermore Falls. Those who desire may give gifts in her memory to either the First Baptist Church, Attn: Irene Couture, 25 Church St., Livermore Falls ME 04254; or to the Odd Fellows & Rebekahs Nurses Training Scholarship Fund, c/o S. Paul Washburn, 22 Munsey Ave., Livermore Falls ME 04254; envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Winter entombment will be at the funeral home. Spring burial will be at the First Parish Cemetery in York.

Ruth J. (Broome) Crowe

SPRUCE HEAD — Ruth Janice (Broome) Crowe, of Spruce Head, Maine, and Cape Haze, Fla., died Sunday, June 3, 2001, following a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born June 29, 1932, in Fall River, Mass., the daughter of Milton and Elsie (Barrow) Broome. A graduate of East Providence High School, she also graduated from the Roger Williams Hospital School of Nursing where she was the president of her class.

On June 13, 1953, Ruth married Byron A. Crowe in Riverside, R.I., and spent the next 48 years as a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. A resident of Coventry, R.I., for more than 20 years, she was a member of the original congregation of St. Matthias Episcopal Church of Coventry, and also belonged to the St. Matthias Altar Guild and the Episcopal Church Women. She was also a Girl Scout Leader for many years and received the Grand Cross of Color from the Pawtuxet Valley Order of Rainbow for Girls.

Since moving to Maine 25 years ago, she has especially enjoyed boating with her husband, gardening and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She has been an active member of the Lemon Bay Garden Club (Englewood, Fla.), since 1995.

Survivors include her husband, Byron A. Crowe, of Spruce Head, and Cape Haze; two daughters, Sharon E. Crowe and her husband, Philip Roy, of Waterville, Adreth A. Rackliff and her husband, Craig, of Spruce Head; one son, Andrew B. Crowe, of Texas; one sister, Adreth Poole, of Riverside, R.I.; and six grandchildren who called her "Mema," Nathan and Annie Pease, Logan and Alexandra "Lexi" Rackliff, Jamie and Byron A. Crowe II.

Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 7, at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St., Rockland.

A celebration of Ruth's life will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, June 8, at the Rockland Congregational Church, 180 Limerock St., Rockland, with the Rev. Mitch Ross officiating.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Bob Gagnon Cancer Care Fund, c/o Northeast Health, 22 White St., Rockland ME 04841.
