Col. Rodney C. Ellis

WATERVILLE — Col. Rodney C. Ellis, U.S. Army Retired, 83, died Saturday, June 2, 2001, at his residence in Waterville.

He was born Jan. 18, 1918, in Oakland, son of William C. and Ella (Jones) Ellis, and attended Oakland schools, Coburn Classical Institute and Colby College in Waterville. He received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Maryland.

Colonel Ellis retired from the U.S. Army in 1972 after 32 years of service, most of which was in the parachute troops. He received numerous medals and awards including the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Bronze Star Medal for Valor with five Oak Leaf Clusters.

Colonel Ellis belonged to several service organizations including the Retired Officers Association, the Military Order of World Wars and the National Association of Uniformed Services. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the American Legion. He was an avid sportsman and runner.

Survivors include his wife of 50 plus years, Donna (Horne) Ellis, of Waterville; one daughter, Dr. Madonna Ann Browne, of Cape Elizabeth; two half-sisters, Myrtle Bickford and Patricia R. Lagasse; two grandchildren, Ginger Anne Browne Johnson and Michael Browne; one great-grandson, Isaac Rodney Browne; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

He will be buried with full military honors at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 7, at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Old Belgrade Road, Augusta, with a service at the Father Leonard LeClair Memorial Chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of Redington Funeral Home in Waterville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Waterville Area Humane Society, 120 Drummond Ave., Waterville ME 04901.

Yvette M. Hebert

SHAWMUT — Yvette M. Hebert, 67, of Shawmut, passed away peacefully, Sunday evening, June 3, 2001, at a Waterville hospital.

She was born Sept. 9, 1933, in Waterville, daughter of the late John B. and Odilia M. (Pouliot) Hebert, and attended Lawrence High School in Fairfield.

Yvette was a loving, compassionate, and caring person; others always came before herself, especially children.

She was a communicant of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Fairfield.

Survivors include two brothers, Rene Hebert and his wife, Mary, of Maynard, Mass., and Donald Hebert and his wife, Rita, of Skowhegan; four sisters, Sylvia Labbe, of Fairfield, Frances Plante and her husband, Norman, of Winslow, Antoinette "Ann" Rice, of Fairfield, and Rita M. Hebert, of Shawmut; 12 nieces and nephews, 21 grandnieces and grandnephews, and five great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews, one aunt and several cousins.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, at the Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main St., Fairfield.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 7, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, High Street, Fairfield, with the Rev. Marcel Dumoulin, celebrant. Interment will follow at Saint Francis Cemetery, Grove Street, Waterville.

Those who wish, contributions may be made in her memory to a charity of choice.

Dorothy Hunter

BENTON — Dorothy Hunter, 86, of Benton, died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

She was born Jan. 5, 1915, in Fairfield, daughter of Edith and Walter Henry, and attended local schools, graduating from Lawrence High School in Fairfield.

Over the years she was very active in community and church organizations. She was a member of the Fairfield Methodist Church for over 70 years. During those years she was a Sunday school teacher, past president of the United Methodist Women, and a member of the Church Council.

Dorothy was a 50-year member of the Benton Grange and a past master. She held the position of Benton Town Clerk for over 30 years. She thoroughly enjoyed her friends and neighbors.

She married Samuel Hunter, Nov. 4, 1933; their marriage was a 66-year loving, lifelong partnership.

Survivors include a brother, Robert Henry, of Winslow; two sisters, Mary Walton, of Islip, N.Y., and Claire Reed, of Brewer; four daughters, Mrs. Erland Penley (Barbara), of Skowhegan, Mrs. Theodore Fisher (Nancy), of Colton, N.Y., Mrs. Graham Pierce (Judith), of Scarborough, and Mrs. William Berry (Sharon), of Nashua, N.H.; eight grandchildren, Belinda Wing, Greg Tulloch, Brian Penley, Gordon Tulloch, Glenn Tulloch, David Penley, Christopher Berry, and Jennifer McCafferty; nine great-grandchildren.

There will be no visiting hours. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, at the Fairfield United Methodist Church, Route 201. Arrangements are by Lawry Brothers Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Marie A. Houle

WATERVILLE — Marie A. Houle, 93, who died May 31, was also predeceased by a sister, Marie Ange Houle.

Ruth P. Brown

BENTON — Ruth P. Brown, 81, of Benton, passed away Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, at a Waterville hospital.

She was born in Benton, Dec. 17, 1919, the daughter of the late Ralph B. and Mildred (Brown) Pillsbury. She attended Fairfield schools, graduating from Lawrence High School, Class of 1937. She also attended and graduated from Thomas Business College, Class of 1939. During World War II, Ruth moved to California and was proud to be employed in the defense industry. After World War II, she came back to Maine and was employed by Hollingsworth & Whitney in Winslow and later by W.S. Pillsbury & Son as office manager for over 30 years, retiring in the mid-1960s.

On Oct. 5, 1969, she married Harold G. Brown, and they spent 30 years of togetherness before he passed away April 3, 1999.

Ruth was a member of the First Baptist Church in Fairfield, the Benton Grange and the Benton Extension. In her early years she enjoyed playing tennis. She was also an accomplished artist, an avid flower gardener and loved visiting with her family and eating out. She was very generous and was known for not forgetting a birthday with a pleasant card to all of her family.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Parker B., J. Wallace, and Laurence B. Pillsbury; and a sister-in-law, Phyllis Pillsbury.

Survivors include her brother, Ralph B. "Barney" Pillsbury Jr. and his wife, Ethel, of Benton; a sister, Helena E. Jones of Kennebunk; two sisters-in-law, Marion Pillsbury of Benton and Doris Pillsbury of Waterville; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and close friends.

Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main St., Fairfield. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Waterville with the Rev. Victor Angulo officiating. Contributions in her memory may be made to the First Baptist Church Abiding Memorial Fund, 12 Newhall St., Fairfield ME 04937; or to the Humane Society-Waterville Area, 120 Drummond Ave., Waterville ME 04901; or to a charity of choice.

Edith M. Crocker

CANAAN — Edith M. Crocker, 67, of Canaan, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at the Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield.

She was born Jan. 13, 1934, in Canaan, daughter of Fuller E. Crocker Sr. and Ella (Lake) Crocker, and graduated from Skowhegan High School, Class of 1952.

She was employed by Sears Roebuck & Co. in Skowhegan as a saleswoman for 24 years. She also worked at the Eagles Club in Skowhegan for 12 years as a bartender.

She was a member of the Eagles Club in Skowhegan for 33 years. She enjoyed going to the horse races, watching NASCAR races and baseball. She also enjoyed watching TV and reading.

Survivors include two sisters, Priscilla Anderson and her husband, Philip, of Detroit, and Shirley Underwood of Texas; brother, Fuller E. Crocker Jr., of Utah; five nephews, Richard Crocker of Canaan, Scott Croker and his wife, Peggy, and Chris Croker, all of Texas, David Crocker and Billy Crocker, both of Utah; two nieces, Linda Crocker and Nancy Crocker, both of Utah; several grandnieces and grandnephews.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, at the Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 261 Madison Ave., Skowhegan.

A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at the Fairview Cemetery, Canaan, with the Rev. Mark Tanner officiating.

John L. Despres

HARPSWELL — John Laing Despres, 54, of Dyers Cove Road, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

He was born in Lawrence, Mass., Nov. 1, 1946, the son of Leonard A. and Helen L. (Laing) Despres. He attended North Andover, Mass., schools and graduated from Masconomet High School in 1964. He then received his bachelor's degree in biology from Bowdoin College in Brunswick.

On Aug. 9. 1969, he married Linda Dyer.

For 10 years he taught biology at Worcester Academy in Worcester, Mass. He also coached football, hockey and baseball. In 1978 he earned his master's degree in natural sciences from Worcester Polytech Institute in Massachusetts.

In 1979 they returned to Brunswick. He taught physics at Brunswick High School becoming chairman of the science department.

For many summers and over 30 years until the time of his death, John enjoyed lobstering. He also enjoyed gardening.

He was a member of KI SI Fraternity, the Maine Teachers Association, the Maine Science Teachers Association and the Maine Lobster Conservancy.

Surviving besides his wife of Harpswell and mother of Cornville are two daughters, Erika L. Despres of Brunswick and Shauna C. Despres of Pompano Beach, Fla.; a son, Aaron D. Despres of Harpswell, and two brothers, Leonard A. Despres of Cornville and Daniel Despres of Bologna, Italy, two nephews, Andrew Despres of Durham and Brian Despres of Skowhegan, and a niece, Michele Despres of Massachusetts.

Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at Stetsons Funeral Home, 12 Federal St., Brunswick.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, from First Parish Church, Maine Street, Brunswick, with the Rev. Jill Small officiating. Interment will be in the Cranberry Horn Cemetery at Cundys Harbor. Memorial donations may be made to the Cundys Harbor Volunteer Fire Department, 97 East Cundys Point, Harpswell ME 04079; or to the Coastal Humane Society, Range Road, Brunswick ME 04011.

Carroll Kenney

PITTSFIELD — Carroll Kenney, 83, of Pittsfield, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, at Birch Grove Nursing Care Center in Pittsfield.

He was born Dec. 6, 1917, in Stetson, son of Harry and Vivene (Childs) Kenney. He worked on area farms during his working life. He was a special person, who never complained and always had a smile for everyone. He loved to go to auctions.

He was predeceased by a brother, Norman.

Survivors include a sister, Rena Cookson of Burnham; two brothers, Wendell Kenney of Gray and Ernest Kenney and his wife, Beatrice, of Burnham; sister-in-law, Arlene Kenney of Corinna; several nieces and nephews.

A graveside funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Village Cemetery in Pittsfield with the Rev. Steven Waite officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the D.H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield.

Wesley C. Mitchell

FARMINGTON — Wesley C. Mitchell, 19, formerly of Farmington, and a resident of Manchester, Vt., died in an accident Thursday morning, Oct. 11, 2001, in Sewanee, Tenn., where he was a freshman at the University of the South.

He was born Aug. 9, 1982, in Pittsfield, Mass., the son of John and Linda (Collins) Mitchell. He attended the Mallett Elementary School in Farmington and then was home schooled for four years. He moved frequently from an early age due to his father's ministry. He lived in Oxford, England, Keene, N.H., Naples, Fla., and New Haven, Conn. He attended Burr & Burton Academy in Manchester, Vt., and Saint George's Episcopal School in Newport, R.I.

Wesley saw and learned a lot of what life had to offer in his only 19 years. He had many interests and many families of friends from his diverse, social and spiritual upbringing. He was very athletic and enjoyed lacrosse, football, skiing, climbing, caving, kayaking and biking. He enjoyed art, especially working with leather. He was a people person and loved children and people of all ages. Though he kept himself busy, he was always ready to listen to others and lend a generous helping hand. The many people he touched in life will dearly miss him.

In addition to his parents, survivors include his two sisters, Chalice and Christine Mitchell, all of Manchester; maternal grandparents, Bernard and Ann Collins of Lee, Mass., and his fraternal grandmother, Eltress Means of Laconia, N.H.

Friends may call from noon at the Brewster Funeral Home in Manchester Center until the service at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, at the Zion Episcopal Church in Manchester where his father is Rector.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Wesley Collins Mitchell Memorial Fund, c/o Zion Episcopal Church, PO Box 717, Manchester VT 05255; this will help fund youth programs so others might experience some of the blessings that Wesley did. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Wilton.

Kenwood L. Rowe

RANGELEY — Kenwood L. Rowe, 91, of Rangeley, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, at the Sandy River Health Care and Rehab Center in Farmington where he had been a resident for the past several days. He had resided the past five years with loving care at the Elizabeth Ann Home in Rangeley.

He was born Dec. 20, 1909, the son of Olin R. and Ilda (Huntoon) Rowe, and attended Rangeley schools and Kents Hill prep school in Readfield.

Kenwood was owner of Rowe's General Store in Rangeley for over 30 years. He was an avid golfer and fisherman and promoter of the Rangeley Region. He was a member of the Rangeley Free Baptist Church.

He is survived by his daughter, Sally R. Church of Rangeley; eight grandchildren, Kim Morris of Bedford, N.Y., Suzanne Church of Needham, Mass., Elizabeth Schrurs of Paris, France, Steven Church of Portland, Renee Aucoin of Rangeley, Peter Rowe of Gray, Rebecca Indich of West Brook, Conn., Adam Rowe of Boston; 13 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, Eveline Hanson Rowe in 1965, and a son, William A. Rowe.

At the request of the family there will be no visitation hours. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at the Baptist Church, Main Street, Rangeley. Interment will be held at the Evergreen Cemetery in Rangeley. Arrangements are under the direction of Adams Funeral Home, Main Street, Phillips. Friends wishing may make donations in his memory to the Elizabeth Anne Home, PO Box 894, Rangeley ME 04970.
