Dwain F. Haskell

1964-2002

PALERMO — Dwain Francis Haskell, 38, of Palermo, died Saturday, March 30, 2002, in Morrill from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was born Feb. 19, 1964, in Waterville, a son of Francis (Bill) Haskell and Beverly (Willoughby) Haskell, both of Palermo.

He enjoyed driving trucks and attending stock car races. He won second place in a pulp loading competition at the Fryeburg Fair.

Survivors include one son, Brandon J. Haskell of Palermo; his mother, Beverly Haskell of Palermo; his father, Francis Haskell and special friend Catherine Cleaves, of Palermo; brother, Dusty and his wife, Pam, of Palermo, brother and "Best Friend" Dwight, and a special friend and companion, Linda Whiteside of Liberty; one sister, Dawn Haskell and special friend, Martin Witham of Waterville; and especially close friends, Debbie, Brandon and Morgan Galloway of Liberty; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to gather from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, with a funeral at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, at the Lawry Brothers Funeral Home-Gray Chapel, Windsor Neck Road, Windsor, with the Rev. Edward L. Hatch officiating. Interment will follow at the Smith Cemetery in Palermo.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like memorial contributions be made in his memory to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, 87 Elm St. Suite 203, Camden ME 04843.

David J. LeBrasseur

1943-2002

BENTON — David J. LeBrasseur, 58, died unexpectedly Monday, April 1, 2002, at his Monk Road residence.

He was born in Waterville, July 10, 1943, the son of Francis J. and Lillian M. (Veilleux) LeBrasseur, and was a graduate of Waterville High School.

David was an avid pool player. He was a machine operator for Keyes Fibre Co. for several years.

He is survived by a son, James LeBrasseur of New Hampshire; two daughters, Gina LeBrasseur of Portland and Diane LeBrasseur of West Enfield; two sisters, Mrs. Robert (Diane) Bishop of Clinton and Mrs. David (Joyce) Buck of Fairfield; a grandchild; and by many nieces and nephews.

There will be no hours of visitation. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 4, at Notre Dame Church, 112 Silver St., Waterville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his memory may be sent to Interfaith Food Pantry, c/o Barbara Pouliot, 9 West Pleasant St., Oakland ME 04963. Arrangements are with Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm St., Waterville.

Alan W. Peace

1938-2002

NORTHFIELD, Vt. — Alan W. "Bucky" Peace, 63, of Northfield, died Saturday morning, March 30, 2002, at Gifford Medical Center in Randolph, Vt.

He was born June 25, 1938, in Clinton, Maine, son of Harold and Marjorie (Watson) Peace.

Bucky attended Northfield schools and graduated from Northfield High School in 1956. He served in the U.S. Air Force as an airplane mechanic at Dover Air Force in Delaware from 1956 to 1960. Following the service he returned home and worked at the Northfield Woolen Mill and Howe Cleaners in Barre before going to work at Norwich University at Northfield in 1963. He worked in the college bookstore and later was the Uniform Procurement Officer until his retirement in 1999.

He enjoyed gardening, motorcycling, hiking, hunting, reading and maple surgaring.

Bucky loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He loved spending time with children of all ages. He was a very loving and dedicated husband. His memberships included the Harley Davidson Owner's Club and the Miniature Horse and Donkey Club.

He leaves his mother, Marjorie Peace, his wife, Marilyn (Falzarano) Peace, to whom he was married Sept. 14, 1963, in Northfield; son, Randy Peace and his wife, Janice; a sister, Joyce Garcia and husband, Paul; two grandchildren, William and Shawn Moody, all of Northfield; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 9, at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Chapel, Randolph Center, with the Rev. William Wick officiating. Burial will follow at the Vermont Veterans Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.

In lieu of flowers, friends wishing, may make memorial contributions in Bucky's memory to the Brown Public Library, Northfield VT 05663.

Dorothy (Bourque) York

1918-2002

COOPERS MILLS —Dorothy (Bourque) York, 83, of Rockland Road, who most recently resided at Windward Gardens in Camden, departed this earth to walk with her Lord, Saturday, March 30, 2002, from Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport.

Dorothy, known to friends and family as "Dotty", was born in Waterville, Oct. 30, 1918, a daughter of Henry J. and Adelina (Chapais) Bourque, the youngest of three children.

She was a graduate of Waterville High School and in May 1946 she married Walter R. York of Coopers Mills, where she resided most of her life.

She worshipped regularly at St. Giles Episcopal Church in Jefferson, where she sang in the choir for many years.

Mrs. York had been an active member of the Rebekah Lodge in Coopers Mills and a life member and Past Matron of Lake View Chapter 179 Order of the Eastern Star in Jefferson. She was also a Grand Representative for the Eastern Star, providing her with the chance to do what she loved, to travel around the country and to attend meetings.

She had been employed by Central Maine Power Co. for 20 years, retiring in 1979.

She was predeceased by her husband, Walter R. York; a brother, Royal Bourque, and a sister, Hilda Fletcher.

She will be sadly missed, but lovingly remembered by her children, Brian R. York and his wife, Diane, of South China, and Roberta G. York and her long time companion, Thomas Palmer, of Augusta; her beloved grandchildren, Jason, Erin and Adam York; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no public visiting hours. A committal service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 4, in the Fr. Leonard LeClair Memorial Chapel at the old Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta.

Arrangements are in the care of Plummer Funeral Home of Augusta.

Michael L. Arvayo

1984-2002

CLINTON — Michael L. Arvayo, 18, of Clinton, died Saturday, June 1, 2002, in Benton, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was born March 21, 1984, in Ephrata, Pa., son of Michael and Rhonda (Thorne) Arvayo.

He had been employed by Flood Brothers Dairy Farm in Clinton. He enjoyed playing basketball and hanging out with his friends. He will be best remembered by his family and friends for his gentle kind manner and living life to the fullest.

Survivors include his parents, Michael Arvayo of Jacksonville, Fla., and Rhonda Jones of Clinton; his grandparents, Jean and Frank Lambert of Fairfield, Alice Thorne of Coopers Mills, and Carlos and Carmen Arvayo of Mesa, Ariz.; his sisters, Rebecca Basford of Scarborough, Michelle Arvayo of Clinton, and Lisa Sanders and her husband, Wes, of Maryland; two nieces, Kaylee and Taylor, and nephew, Tyler; three best friends, Pat Prosser of Texas, Scott St. Peter of Texas, and Matt Goldsmith of Fairfield; and countless friends.

Family and friends are invited to gather at the Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main St., Fairfield, from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 5. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 6, at the Brown Memorial United Methodist Church in Clinton with the Rev. Susan Davenport officiating. Burial will take place at a later date at Mount Hope Cemetery in Augusta.

Natalie S. Butler

1908-2002

FARMINGTON — Natalie S. Butler, 93, passed away quietly Saturday, June 1, 2002, at her home in Farmington.

She was born on July 13, 1908, in Melrose, Mass., the daughter of Dwight Case and Clare (Vaughn) Sturges. She grew up in the Melrose area where she and her friends would go horseback riding on the weekends. She attended Vesper George Art School from 1926 to 1928. She then acquired a job with Irving & Casson A.H. Davenport Co. in Boston, as an interior decorator and designer of reproduced furniture.

She met Benjamin Butler, an attorney, at a friend's wedding where they fell in love and were married on May 23, 1932, in King's Chapel, Boston. Upon her marriage, she moved to Farmington where she became involved in cultural and historical activities of the town of Farmington. She and her husband also established a small pottery business and they sold their wares wholesale to businesses on the coast of Maine.

She became a charter member of the Farmington Historical Society and collaborated with her husband, Benjamin, in the publication of six different "Farmington Pilgrimage" booklets used in conjunction with the historical tours sponsored by the society between 1965 and 1976. She was co-chairman of the Union Baptist Church Restoration Project and county chairman of the Maine Sesquicentennial Celebration in 1970. Mrs. Butler was also instrumental in the effort to preserve and restore the Little Red School House in West Farmington, now an official historic landmark. She was also a trustee of Maine Citizens for Historical Preservation; an incorporator trustee and treasurer of the Farmington Public Library; a trustee of the Franklin Memorial Hospital; a member of the Maine Society of Mayflower Descendants; a member of the New England Genealogy Society. She was presented with the first honorary Master of Arts degree ever awarded by the University of Maine at Farmington on June 4, 1972, at the college's annual commencement exercises; an honorary member of Delta Kappa Gamma. She was awarded the Certificate of Commendation by the American Association for State and Local History in 1971, and received the Historical Preservation Award of the Maine Historical Preservation Commission in 1972; the Roderick-Crosby Post American Legion honored her with "Citizen of the Year" award by Post Commander Camille Marquis in 1988. She also authored, with her husband, the History of Old South Church, Farmington, Maine, 1966; Little Red Schoolhouse, 1971; Farmington's Musical Heritage, 1975; The Falls: Where Farmington, Maine, began in 1776, 1976; Dwight C. Sturges: Etcher of an Era, 1974; Zephaniah Builds a Schoolhouse-Among Other Things!, 1975.

Her husband, Benjamin, and her daughter, Diane Clare Brinkman predeceased her. Her son, Benjamin Sturges Butler, four granddaughters and six great-grandchildren survive her.

A celebration of her life will be held starting at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, June 6, at the Old South Church, Main Street, Farmington. The first half hour will be in quiet time with the service beginning at 1 p.m. Those in attendance are invited to stay for continued fellowship and refreshment following the service. Private family committal services will be held at Fairview Cemetery in Farmington. Gifts may be given as an alternative to flowers to the Natalie Sturges Butler Scholarship for continued arts studies, c/o Superintendent's Office, SAD 9, New Sharon ME 04955. Arrangements are in the care of the Wiles Funeral Home, 137 Farmington Falls Road, Farmington.

Merle E. Carr

1924-2002

SIDNEY — Merle E. Carr, 78, of Cameron Drive, died Monday, June 3, 2002, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta after a long illness.

He was born in Dexter, May 26, 1924, the son of Maurice Carr and Jessie (Page) Carr. Merle was a graduate of Dexter High School and served honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed for several years as a sales representative by Clark Marine of Augusta. He was previously employed as a sales representative by Harry Miller Co. of Boston and later by Manset Marine of Rockland for 28 years.

Merle enjoyed playing cards and he developed his craft as a woodworker over many years. He was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church of Augusta, a charter member of the Maine Marine Trade Association, former member and past grand knight of the Knights of Columbus of Dexter, former member and past commander of American Legion Post 53 of Dexter and a member of the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks of Augusta.

Merle was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Lewis Carr, of Dexter.

Surviving is his wife of 55 years, Marie A. (Ronco) Carr of Sidney; one son, Peter Carr and his wife, Jane, of Augusta; four daughters, Lana Wintle and her husband, Calvin, of Detroit, Shawna Foye and her husband, Thomas, of Sidney, Judy Bryant and her husband, Wayne, of Williamsville, N.Y., and Jane Haskins and her husband, Thomas, of Burnt Hill, N.Y.; two brothers, Clayton Carr of Dexter and Dennis Carr of Corinna; two sisters, Charlene Breton of Dexter and Helen LaCasse of Floral City, Fla.; 15 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, where members of the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks of Augusta are asked to meet at 7:30 p.m. to offer a service. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 6, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Augusta. Burial will follow at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta. The family would appreciate memorial contributions be made to: Sidney Rescue, 2986 Middle Road, Sidney ME 04330. Edith D. Chaffee

1918-2002

CUMBERLAND — Edith Dugas Chaffee, 84, of Cumberland, died Saturday, June 1, 2002. She died peacefully surrounded by family and loved ones.

She was born Jan. 26, 1918, in Huntington, Mass., the daughter of Henry and Winifred Dugas. She graduated from Huntington High School in 1936 and attended Providence Bible Institute and Nyack College, Nyack, N.Y.

On Aug. 2, 1941, she married Glenn Chaffee. They entered life together in ministry in 1942, and over 50 years served churches in Shelfield, Mass., Hill, N.H., East Wilton, Maine, and West Peru, Maine. In addition to serving in ministry she was also a librarian at Glen Cove Christian Academy in Rockport.

Mrs. Chaffee was also a gifted writer. She wrote over 20 plays including two published, To All People, and Christmas Stranger. Her poetry, articles, newsletters, and humorous lyrics have brought warmth, pleasure and fun to her family and friends. Many of her plays were written and performed at Camp Berea in North Turner. She and her husband founded this Camp in 1960 and directed this Christian Ministry for teenagers for 35 years.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Glenn; two daughters, Roberta Farrington and her husband, Wayne, and Joy Byron and her husband, Frank; two sons, Theodore and his wife, Lynne, and Richard and his wife, Loris. She had 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, two sisters, Dorothy Manly of Huntington, Mass., and Betty Lauffenburger of North Carolina.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 3, at Wilson Funeral Home, 24 Shaker Road, Gray. A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, at Payson Park Evangelical Free Church, 424 Ocean Avenue, Portland, with the Rev. Emil Frank officiating. A private committal service will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Camp Berea, North Turner ME 04282.
