Robert C. Smith

1972-2003

MADISON — Robert C. Smith, 30, died unexpectedly Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, in Madison. He was born Oct. 17, 1972, in Skowhegan, the son of Thomas J. and Barbara (Allen) Smith. Robert attended Madison schools graduating from Madison High School with the class of 1991. He attended Kennebec Valley Technical College of Fairfield where he studied building construction.

He was employed by Shop 'n Save Super Market in Madison for approximately 10 years and had also been employed by Cianbro Corp. and B.E.&K. Construction.

He was a member of the Carpenters Union of Augusta. Robert belonged to a Dart League at the American Legion in Madison. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping.

He is survived by his daughters, MaKayla Smith of Madison and Hannah Rundlett of Canaan; his parents, Thomas J. and Barbara E. Smith of Madison; his sisters, Lisa Murray and fiance David MacDonald of Madison, Tammy Judkins of Hartland and Cindy Bossie of Madison; his grandfather, Robert V. Smith and his wife Joyce of Madison; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at the SRS School on Pleasant Street in Madison. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a memorial contribution, c/o Barbara E. Smith, 127 Pine St., Madison ME 04950. Arrangements are by Giberson Funeral Home, 40 Maple St., Madison.

Hilda M. Viles

1932-2003

BRIGHTON PLANTATION — Hilda May Viles, 70, died unexpectedly Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at Maine Medical Center in Portland. She was born Dec. 15, 1932, in Hartland, daughter of Harry and Sadie (Emery) Elliott, and attended Hartland Academy.

She married Warren W. Viles Jr., March 10, 1951, and they where lifelong residents of Brighton Plantation. Hilda was a homemaker and raised seven children.

She loved fishing, her Toyota, and she loved being with her family and friends.

Her daughter, Elizabeth Irene, granddaughter, Amy Viles, brother, Edwin Elliott, and niece, Wanda, died previously. She is survived by her husband, Warren W. Viles Jr.; her sons, Winfield Viles of Brighton, Owen Viles and his wife Doris of Moscow, Steven Viles and wife Chong of Salem, Hugh Viles and wife Vikki of Canaan; daughters, Toni Viles of St. Albans, Cheryl Viles and companion Dan Perkins of Solon, Linda Cates and husband Mark of Moscow; grandchildren, Allan Viles and companion Kattie Sweet, Dan, Shawn, Steve and Alex Viles, Derek and Brandon Cates, and Alicia Jacobs; also two great-grandchildren, Durgin and Kendra Sweet; brothers, Louis Elliott, Alton Elliott, Weston Elliott, and a sister, Lorraine Post; a special niece, Pam Smiley; and special friends, Linda Graham and Nick and Merlene; several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, at the Church of the Nazarene, Meadow Street, Bingham, with the Rev. John Mark Evans. Interment will be later in the spring at the Mt. Abram Cemetery. Arrangements are by Giberson Funeral Home, 18 River St., Bingham.

Eric Scott Osnoe

1982-2003

WATERVILLE — Eric "Porkchop" Scott Osnoe, 21, died May 29, 2003, in Palermo, as the result of an automobile accident.

He was born in Lincoln on Jan. 15, 1982, the son of Nellie Marie Cole and Kenneth Osnoe Jr.

Eric worked at C&C Distributors. Not only did he work with them, he spent his entire adult life with them. To him, they were family. He knew they were always there for him.

He enjoyed spending as much time as he could with his son. His hobbies were fishing, camping, boating, driving, riding ATV's, spending time with his girlfriend and protecting his siblings. He was a very happy, upbeat guy who could put a smile on anyone's face. He will be sorely missed by all.

He is survived by his father, Kenneth Osnoe Jr., of Danforth; his mother, Nellie Cole of Springfield; his son, Cameron Osnoe of Clinton; his "Dad," Dennis Dodge Sr.; three sisters, Jessica Cole of Waterville, Lacey Cole of Greenbush and Angela Osnoe; six brothers, Danny Dodge of Clinton, Dennis Dodge Jr., Kenneth Osnoe III and his wife Nancy, Christopher Osnoe, Craig Osnoe and Brian Osnoe; grandparents, Helen Cole of Springfield and Kenneth and Evelyn Osnoe of Burlington; cousins, Velvet Cole and Wayne Cole; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by his grandfather, Dale Cole.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Charles Smith

1924-2003

PITTSFIELD — Charles Smith, 78, died Saturday, May 31, 2003, at Birch Grove Rehabilitation & Living Center in Pittsfield.

He was born Aug. 18, 1924, in Portland, the son of John and Clair (Fraser) Smith.

Charles has been a resident of Pittsfield since December of 2002 and previously lived for more than 20 years in Anson.

He is survived by a brother, Roland Smith of Belfast.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 4, at the East Cemetery in New Portland, with Pastor Frank Gleason officiating. Arrangements are by Giberson Funeral Home, 40 Maple St., Madison.

Elizabeth Hall Coffin Stevens

1920-2003

SKOWHEGAN —Elizabeth Hall Coffin Stevens, 83, died Saturday, May 31, 2003, at the Redington Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan.

Friends and relatives may call from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, at the Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 4, at the Federated Church in Skowhegan with Rev. Mark Tanner officiating. Interment will take place at Mount Hope Cemetery in Bangor, following the service.

Ralph C. Huff

1924-2003

WELLINGTON — Ralph C. Huff, 78, died Saturday, May 31, 2003, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Togus.

He was born in Wellington on Nov. 28, 1924, the son of Gorham and Rose (Andrzejewski) Huff.

He married Hazel "Polly" Trafton on June 6, 1943, residing in Wellington. Polly died July 5, 1995.

He was a longtime resident of Wellington, living in Skowhegan for the past four years.

Ralph worked as a farmer and atvarious shoe factories as a machinist. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed the outdoors.

He is survived by a daughter, Valerie J. Huff and her companion, Susan Knowles, of Skowhegan; his mother, Rose Huff of Pittsfield; Todd Mitchell of Dexter and Renee Johnson of Augusta; a nephew, Larry Huff of Windham.

He was predeceased by his father, Gorham Huff and a brother, Rufus Huff.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 5, at the Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan with the Rev. Mark Tanner officiating.

Irving E. Drew

1927-2003

PALERMO/WINSLOW —Irving E. Drew, 75, passed away quietly on Sunday, June 1, 2003, at Thayer Unit, MaineGeneral Medical Center, following a prolonged period of illness.

He was born in 1927, the son of Henry and Phyllis Drew of Skowhegan.

Irving graduated from Skowhegan High School and attended Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield. While still in his teens, he worked part-time with his father in Drew's Floor Sanding and Refinishing business. He was employed at Quimby Veneer in Bingham for a short time, in retail with Sears Roebuck in Waterville for nearly 30 years and in 1981 returned to the Drew Floor Sanding and Refinishing business full time, most of these years in the Camden-Rockport and Winter Haven Islands area.

Irving was a kind and loving husband to his wife of 32 years, Marie (Barra) Drew and together they thoroughly enjoyed hunting and ATV riding in the Palermo area and at their Lake Moxie Camp. He was a great fisherman and took much pleasure recounting his experiences.

He is predeceased by his parents and a brother, Henry.

He was the father of four children, Irving II (Nicola) Drew, Terry (Gregg) Allbright, JoAnn (Matthew) Dworman and Stephen (Marina) Drew; and eight grandchildren. He also leaves behind a special nephew, Henry Drew, and companion Lauren Pompei, and a niece, Michele (Shawn) McGuire.

He will be sadly missed by his four stepchildren and their spouses, Guy and Phebe Quattrucci, Dominic and Paula Quattrucci, Michael and Janice Quattrucci and Anna Q. Niehoff and Nancy A. LaGasse; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at the Muskie Center on Gold Street in Waterville with Pastor Ed Hatch officiating.

Ronald Lavoy Rowles

1925-2003

FARMINGTON — Ronald Lavoy Rowles, 77, of Fairbanks, died peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family on Sunday, June 1, 2003.

Ron was born Aug. 16, 1925, in Woodland, Pa., a son of Raymon Lavoy and Lillian Iolene (Shoff) Rowles. He graduated from Cuyahoga Falls High School in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 at age 17. He served aboard the Rough Rider (C-36253) in Boothbay Harbor, Maine.

On July 11, 1945, he married Gloria Black of Boothbay.

He worked as a ship's rigger and a commercial fisherman before working as a manager of Reny's Department Store in Farmington for 35 years. He enjoyed working part-time at Bass Shoe in Wilton after his retirement from Reny's.

Ron was an avid fisherman, golfer and cribbage player. He also enjoyed building and flying radio controlled airplanes, bowling, shooting pool and was an amateur radio operator NIGZG. He was active with the American Legion, Roderick Crosby Post No. 28 in Farmington and was a Member of the South Bristol Anchor Masonic Lodge No. 58.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Gloria; two sons, Larry and his wife, Sharon, of Waterboro and Darryl and his wife, Michele, of Brewer; five grandchildren, Scott Rowles and his wife, Rosemary, of West Gardiner, Jason Rowles of South Portland, Kellee Rowles of South Portland, Jessica Rowles of Herman and Michael Rowles of Brewer; one great-grandson, Cameron Rowles of West Gardiner; two brothers, Raymond and his wife, Dorothy, of Uniontown, Ohio, and Glen and his wife, Barbara, of Massillon, Ohio; and one sister, "Pat" Clemens and her husband, Jerry, of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.

He was predeceased by his parents and a grandson, Stephen Rowles.

Public memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 5, from the Jay Baptist Church. Memorial visitation will be held one hour prior to the services from 1 to 2 p.m. Following the services, the Women's Fellowship will host a reception in the church vestry. All are welcome. Arrangements are in the care of the Wiles Funeral Home, Cremation Service and Bereavement Resource Center, 137 Farmington Falls Road, (U.S. Route 2 and Route 27) in Farmington.

Linwood James Leavitt

1934-2003

HARTLAND — Linwood James Leavitt, 69, of Hartland, died unexpectedly Saturday, May 31, 2003, at his residence.

He was born on March 13, 1934, in Dixmont, the son of Harry and Grace (Dunn) Leavitt.

He married Lorraine Ashcroft on Dec. 12, 1959. He served in the United States Army from 1957-1958. Linwood also served in the Army National Guard until 1962.

He worked for S.D. Warren and Sappi from 1987 to 1999.

Linwood loved to hunt and fish, but he especially loved spending time with his familyand grandchildren. He also enjoyed working on his woodpile.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Lorraine P. Leavitt. He is also survived by his mother, Grace Leavitt of Palmyra; a daughter, Karen Blodgett and husband, Lester, of Concord; son, James Leavitt and wife, Tamara, of St. Albans; four grandchildren, Tonya and Matthew of Concord and Rachel and Savanna of St. Albans. Also surviving are two sisters, Leola Moody and husband, George, of Pittsfield and Patricia Holt and husband, Richard, of Oakland; six brothers, Earl and wife, Therolin, of Palmyra, Galen and wife, Ervena, of Palmyra, Harry Jr. and wife, Louise, of Detroit, Caroll and wife, Carol Sue, of Newport, Howard and wife, Nancy, of Glenburn and Harland and wife, Debbie, of Glenburn; an uncle, Preston Dunn and wife of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. Also surviving are many special friends, too many to mention.

By the request of the family, a private calling will take place. In Linwood's memory, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, New England Division, 1 Main St., Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086-1246. Arrangements are under the direction of Donald H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, Pittsfield.

James D. Joseph

1919-2003

SKOWHEGAN — James D. Joseph, 83, died June 2, 2003, at Thayer Unit, MaineGeneral Medical Center, in Waterville.

He was born in Waterville on Nov. 1, 1919, the son of David and Tamamie (Karem) Joseph.

Mr. Joseph was a graduate of Waterville High School. During World War II, he worked in shipbuilding in Fall River, Mass. He retired as an independent pipe fitter welder. He was a lifetime member of the Waterville Lodge of Elks and a lifetime member of Local Pipe Fitter Union 783/716.

He was a big fan of Al Corey and the Sounds of the big bands. He was an avid gardener, fisherman and loved horse races.

He is survived by his companion of 19 years, Virene De Beck of Skowhegan; sons and their wives, Robert J. and Early Joseph of Helson, British Columbia, Ronald A. Joseph of Orono and Donald A. and Teddi-Jann Joseph of Orono; a daughter and her husband, Gale and Brian La Plante of Waterville; sisters and brothers, Lena Fotter of Waterville, Julia Campion of Oakland, Josie Lasley of Virginia, Selma Thompson of Illinois, Marianne Perry of Florida, Madeline Joseph of Waterville, Celia John of West Virginia, John D. Joseph of Waterville, George Anthony "Tony" Joseph of Waterville and Philip Joseph of Florida; and eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Alice Yeaton Joseph, who died in 1982.

A graveside committal service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 6, at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, Grove Street, Waterville with Rev. Mr. Peter Joseph (deacon) officiating. Memorial donations in his memory may be made to MaineGeneral Medical Center, 3 North Nursing Unit, Office of Philanthropy, 30 Chase Ave., Waterville, ME 04901. Arrangements are with Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm St., Waterville.
