Lawrence F. Merrill

NEWPORT — Lawrence F. Merrill, 78, of Newport, died Saturday, May 6, 2000, at a Pittsfield hospital.

He was born Jan. 11, 1922, in Derry, N.H.

He served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II and received a Silver Star, Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.

He was employed by the construction business for many years as a high line worker and as a steel worker.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn (Smith) Merrill, of Newport; three children, Charlie Mason, of Florida, Howard Merrill, of Orient, and Debbie Toothaker, of Montville; 12 stepchildren, 10 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 11, at Riverside Cemetery in Newport, with Shirley B. Carter of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4298 of Dexter officiating. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home of Newport.

Ona Kathleen M. Patterson

WATERVILLE — Ona Kathleen M. Patterson, 97, of Waterville, died Saturday, May 6, 2000, at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta.

She was born Jan. 22, 1903, in Fairfield, daughter of George and Kate (Bradbury) Mayo, and graduated from Lawrence High School in Fairfield in 1920 and from Thomas College in Waterville in 1923.

She taught school for four years at Lawrence High School and was employed by Home Insurance Co. in Waterville and later for public accountant Carl Dubord.

Prior to living at the Maine Veterans Home, she resided in Sarasota, Fla., for 27 years during the late fall and winter months and spent her summers at Messalonskee Lake. She was a member of Pleasant Street United Methodist Church in Waterville and for many years was a member of the Odd Ladies.

She was predeceased by her husband, Wallace Patterson, in 1990, and by a daughter, Jean Turner, in 1989.

Survivors include a son, George A. Henry, and wife, Marilyn, of Waterville; a half-brother, Harold Mayo, of Las Vegas; a son-in-law, Norman Turner, of Oxford, Conn.; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandson; several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 20, at Redington Funeral Home, 5 Park St., Waterville. Burial will be made at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Old Belgrade Road, Augusta. Arrangements are by Redington Funeral Home of Waterville.

Memorial donations may be made to Nurses Scholarship Fund, c/o Maine Veterans Home, RR 7 Box 901, Augusta ME 04330.

Carolyn R. Butler

ST. ALBANS — Carolyn R. Butler, 47, of St. Albans, died Monday, June 12, 2000, at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

She was born April 30, 1953, in Hartland, daughter of Linwood and Helen (Ramsdell) Bowley, and attended Skowhegan Area High School. She married Paul S. Butler on March 6, 1971.

She was employed 20 years by Irving Tanning Co. in Hartland.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed flower gardening and the company of her grandchildren and her two dogs, Hobo and Sadie.

Survivors include her husband of St. Albans; her mother, Helen Bowley, of Canaan; two children, Paula Crocker, and husband, Robert, and their children, Haley and Hunter; and Travis Butler, all of St. Albans; a brother, Linwood Bowley, of Canaan; mother-in-law, Eva Butler, of St. Albans; sister-in-law, Donna Vicnaire, and husband, Linwood, of St. Albans; brother-in-law, Wayne Butler, and wife, Audrey, of Wellington; and sister-in-law, Dawn Ruland, of Augusta.

Friends may visit from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 13, at D.H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, at Hartland Full Gospel Church. Burial will follow at Maloon Cemetery, St. Albans.

Paul E. Conner

SANGERVILLE — Paul E. Conner, 76, husband of Alfreda (Hanscom) Conner, died Monday, June 12, 2000, at a local hospital.

He was born July 10, 1923, in Sangerville, son of Albert W. and Mildred (Brown) Conner.

He was employed 21 years at Guilford Industries. He also worked in the woods and drove a milk truck.

He was a North Dexter Grange member for many years.

In addition to his wife, Alfreda, of Sangerville, survivors include six children, Velma Grant, and husband, Jim, of Dexter, Darrel Conner, and wife, Tootie, of Palmyra, Paula Locklin, and husband, David, of Guilford, Steve Conner, of Sangerville, Kevin Conner, and his friend, Mary, of Plymouth, Lynette Hanscome, and husband, Kenneth, of Guilford; three brothers, Neil, of California, Bernard, of Norridgewock, and Elbridge, of Greenville; 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Greaves, and a brother, Weldon Conner Jr.

He will be remembered by his special friends, Clifford and Marilyn Braley and family, of Machias.

Friends are invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 15, at Lary Funeral Home in Dover-Foxcroft.

A graveside memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, June 16, at Sangerville Village Cemetery, with the Rev. Isaiah Hill officiating.

Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Cancer Care Unit of Maine, Webber Building, Eastern Maine Medical Center, 417 State St., Bangor ME 04401.

Ralph C. Gray

NORTH NEWPORT — Ralph C. Gray, 93, of North Newport, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at a Pittsfield hospital.

He was born Aug. 27, 1906, in North Newport, son of Adelbert and Lydia Mae (Ireland) Gray, and attended North Newport schools.

For over 20 years, Ralph was employed as a spinner at Moosehead Woolen Co. until it burned. He was then employed 20 years as an electrician at Fayscott Co. in Dexter.

Ralph married Clara Hayden Gray. She died Feb. 15, 1989.

He was a member and past master of North Newport Grange and served there until it merged with Sebasticook Grange in Newport. He was a life member of Sebasticook Grange, in which he held a 60-year membership pin.

For several years, Ralph served on the Newport school board. He was a member of the Maine Antique Power Association and Maine Antique Tractor Club, and a former member of the Dusters Antique Auto Club.

Survivors include five daughters, Barbara Garnett, of Corinna, Winona, and her husband, DeWayne Custer, of North Newport, Regena, and her husband, Lewis Tuttle, of Newport, Dody, and her husband, Roy Duplisea, of Palmyra, Sandra, and her husband, Stephen Graham, of Blaine; 14 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He will be remembered by a special granddaughter, Beverly Kaufman, of Dover-Foxcroft; and a special grandson and his wife, Carleton and Carol Garnett, of North Newport.

He was predeceased by his infant daughter, Nedra; a sister, Gladys, and four brothers, Wilbur, Ernest, Ivan and Donald.

Friends may call from 2 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, at Brown Funeral Home, 24 High St., Newport, where a funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 15, with the Rev. E. Lewis Bell officiating. Burial will be held in the family lot at North Newport Cemetery.

Olive M. Loomis

STARKS — Olive Mary (Crane) Loomis, 89, died peacefully in her sleep, Monday, June 12, 2000, at her Starks home.

She was born April 7, 1911, in Mansfield, Conn., daughter of Clarence G. and Lulu A. (Blakely) Crane, and attended Mansfield Center and Willimantic schools in Connecticut.

She was an early career woman and worked independently from age 18. She was employed as a buyer and comparison shopper for a well-known clothing store in Connecticut and for insurance companies.

She took great pride in the reputation that she had acquired as a valued employee. While she did not like to reminisce, she did tell many of her Maine neighbors that her employer in Connecticut had tried hard to convince her to stay and not move to Maine.

She was the devoted wife of Lester G. Loomis. He died in 1985. They were married Oct. 17, 1931, in New York City at the Little Church Around the Corner. This chapel was known worldwide at the time as a favorite wedding spot, and Olive always enjoyed telling visitors about her wedding, her gown and that special and elegant day.

She moved to Maine about 20 years ago with her husband, where they had a new home built and raised goats, geese and cattle. She adored her animals and had many cats over her lifetime. Her most beloved cat, the "Gray Cat" lived to the unbelievable age of 23.

She left an indelible impression on all who knew her during her years in Maine because of her forthrightness and honesty. She will be missed deeply by her special friend, Earl R. Sterry, and her most recent caregivers, Carolyn Sours and Carolee Hand. She leaves many dear friends including Beulah Hebert, Norman and Linda Ellis, Gary Athenian and Earl's girlfriend, Carol Coles.

In accordance with Mrs. Loomis' wishes, there will be no service or visiting hours. She will be interred beside her husband in the Old Willimantic Cemetery in Windham, Conn. Arrangements are by Giberson Funeral Home, 40 Maple St., Madison; www.legacy.com.

Doris L. Nickerson

WATERVILLE — Doris L. Nickerson, 97, widow of Dr. Kermit S. Nickerson, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, in Waterville.

She was born March 17, 1903, in Winterport, daughter of Charles and Eda (Young) Clements, and graduated from Winterport High School in 1922 and from Eastern State Normal School in Castine in 1924. She taught elementary school in South Lincoln, Auburn and Waterville.

In 1928, she married Dr. Kermit S. Nickerson in Winterport and moved from Oakland to Waterville. Dr. Nickerson was superintendent of schools in Oakland and then in Waterville and served as Maine's commissioner of education. He died in 1982.

She was a member of Pleasant Street United Methodist Church for many years as well as the United Methodist Women. She was an active volunteer in the Waterville Woman's Club serving on the library and music committees.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Norris Clements, and her sister, Helen Roderick.

Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn N. Card, of Wellington, Colo.; a son, Clement A. Nickerson, of Brunswick, and Brooksville, Fla.; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 17, at Greenlawn Cemetery in Swanville. Arrangements are by Redington Funeral Home of Waterville.

Malcolm R. Paine

PALMYRA — Malcolm R. "Mac" Paine, 75, of Palmyra, died unexpectedly Sunday, June 11, 2000, at a Pittsfield hospital.

He was born March 8, 1925, in Charleston, son of Lyndall and Lillian (Russell) Paine, and attended Charleston and East Corinth schools, graduating from East Corinth Academy, class of 1943. He was an U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, entering the service directly following graduation from high school and served for three years.

He married Carlista Early on May 19, 1946.

Mac was an used car dealer in the Newport and Palmyra area for over 48 years. In his early years in the car business, he and his father had a Pontiac and GMC dealership in Newport. He then went into business for himself and sold used cars, and lawn and garden tractors in both Newport and then in Palmyra. During his years in the car business, Mac was associated with Linnehan Auto in Bangor and for many years with Hartley's in Newport.

Mac liked making things with wood and, for the past several years, he owned and operated Country Wood-N-Things in Palmyra. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Newport, where he served 20 years as a deacon.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Carlista "Clis" Paine, of Palmyra; his stepmother, Pauline Paine, of Newport; two daughters, Sharon M. O'Leary, and her life partner, Joe Daley, of Windham, and Sandra, and her husband, Valmore Buckland, of Hurricane, W.Va.; a half-sister, Evelyn Hawthorne, of Newport; four grandchildren, Rachel Welch, of Bangor, Rebecca Thibodeau, of Kenduskeag, Shelley Scarbro, of Lavallette, W.Va., Sherri Chapman, of Hurricane; seven great-grandchildren, Brooke Scarbro and Bently Scarbro, both of Lavallette, Chely Thibodeau, of Kenduskeag, Caleb Chapman, Emily Chapman and Samuel Chapman, all of Hurricane, and Chelsea Welch, of Bangor; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He will be remembered by special friends, Warren and Cindy Noyes, and their family, of Newport.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, at Brown Funeral Home, 24 High St., Newport.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 15, at Calvary Baptist Church, Grove Street, Newport, with pastor Michael Stephenson officiating. Burial will follow in the family lot at Corinthian Cemetery in East Corinth.

Friends who wish may make memorial donations to the Calvary Baptist Church, Expansion Building Fund, 29 Grove St., Newport ME 04953. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
