Paulina (Taylor) Paradis

WATERVILLE — Paulina (Taylor) Paradis, 62, of Waterville, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at Lakewood Manor nursing home in Waterville after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born Oct. 22, 1937, in Hallowell, daughter of William Taylor and Dorothy (Barry) Lewis, of Augusta.

She married Roger J. Paradis, of Winslow, on June 8, 1968, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Winslow.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Fairfield and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in Winslow.

She enjoyed embroidery, puzzles and quiet scenic rides to the coast and boat rides and get-togethers on Snow Pond. Next to her family, her biggest joy was her native American heritage, attending several pow-wows and gatherings.

Survivors include her loving husband, Roger J. Paradis, of Waterville; her mother, Dorothy Lewis, of North Carolina; two sons, Donald Paradis, of Oakland, and Paul Paradis, of Waterville; three daughters, Donna West, of Chelsea, Paula Cates, of St. Albans, and Rhonda Murray, of Lompoc, Calif.; a brother, Herbert Taylor, of Mocksville, N.C.; a sister, Dolly Bibber, of Florida; 17 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. She assisted in raising one of her grandsons, David Paradis, of Waterville.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, and Thursday, June 15, at Veilleux Funeral Home, 8 Elm St., Waterville.

Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 19, at St. Francis Cemetery, Grove Street, Waterville.

Yvonne M. Pomerleau

WATERVILLE — Yvonne M. Pomerleau, 95, who resided at 93 Western Ave., died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at Oak Grove nursing home in Waterville.

She was born June 21, 1904, in St. Come, Quebec, Canada, daughter of Joseph and Odelinda (Rodrigue) Veilleux Vigue.

She married Wilfrid Pomerleau 48 years ago. He died in 1974. She was a housewife most of her life and a Waterville resident, and a devoted lifelong member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. She was a member of the St. Anne Society and a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Chapel.

Survivors include a son, Roland J. Pomerleau, and wife, Sunny, and one daughter, Juliette Pomerleau Henchey, and husband, John; six grandchildren, Brenda Pomerleau Breton and Debra Pomerleau Lemieux, Michael, Paul, Johnny Henchey, Teresa Henchey De Bendictis, and eight great-grandchildren; one loving sister, Florence Lessard, and two sisters-in-law, Dorielle Vigue and Marrietta Lessard Vigue.

At her request there will be no visiting hours.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 15, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Elm Street, Waterville.

Burial and committal prayers will follow at St. Francis Cemetery, Grove Street, Waterville. Arrangements are by Veilleux Funeral Home of Waterville.

Memorial donations may be made to Servants of the Blessed Sacrament, 101 Silver St., Waterville ME 04901.

Eleanor A. Russell

NEW SHARON — Eleanor A. Russell, 87, of New Sharon, died at Sandy River Center for Health Care on Friday, June 9, 2000, following a long illness.

She was born Nov. 20, 1912, in Kezar Falls, daughter of Frank and Anne (Kelly) Wescott. She was educated at Farmington Normal School, graduating with a teaching degree.

She taught in New Sharon and later in Paris. She also was a beautician, owning her own shop in Norway.

In 1954, she married Gleason E. Russell. They made their home in Miami, Fla., for 23 years, moving in 1976 to New Sharon.

She enjoyed golf, being around children, and riding around the country roads.

She was predeceased by a sister, Frances Jack, of Pensacola, Fla.; and her husband, Gleason Russell.

At the request of the family, there will be no visitation hours. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Adams Funeral Home of Farmington.

Remembrances may be made in her memory to the Maine Alzheimer's Association, 163 Lancaster St. Suite 160B, Portland ME 04101-2406.

Kenneth A. Schmitz

SKOWHEGAN — Kenneth A. Schmitz, 83, of Skowhegan, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at Cedar Ridge nursing home in Skowhegan.

He was born July 24, 1917, in Skowhegan, son of Herbert and Myrtie Schmitz, and attended Skowhegan schools. He served in the U.S. Navy Seabees during World War II.

He had served as treasurer of the Waterville Carpenters Union local for 15 years and was a self-employed carpenter for 20 years. He also owned and operated Merit Swimming Pools for 25 years.

Ken enjoyed square dancing, roller skating, traveling and woodworking.

Ken is survived by his wife of 48 years, Paulette (Paulie); six children, Bruce Schmitz, of Washington, D.C., Brian Schmitz, and wife, Julie, of Connecticut, Wayne Schmitz, of Georgia, Lou-Anne Shaw, of Carmel, Scott Schmitz, and wife, Lena, of Mechanic Falls, and Randy Schmitz, and wife, Lori, of Waterville; a brother, Maynard Schmitz, of Maryland; and a sister, Gladys Libby, of Skowhegan; nine grandchildren, Jessica, Alex, Nicholas, Emily, Keith, Kelly, Kyle, Jacqueline, and Aaron; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Catherine Gullifer and Lillian Bloomquist.

There will be no visitation. A memorial Mass celebrating his life will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 16, at Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church, Water Street, Skowhegan, with the Rev. Marcel Chouinard officiating.

Burial will follow at 1 p.m. at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Old Belgrade Road, Augusta.

Arrangements entrusted to the care of Pine State Cremation Service, 1-800-769-6371.

Edna L. Collins

NEW SHARON — Edna L. Collins, 68, of New Sharon, died Monday, June 12, 2000, at her home in New Sharon following a brief illness.

She was born in Blaine, June 21, 1931, the daughter of Gordon and Helen (Piper) Thomas, and attended the schools of Robinson, Benton and Farmington.

She married Charles Collins in 1946 in Farmington and was a housewife for most of her life.

She was a member of the New Sharon Auxiliary and past member of the Henderson Memorial Baptist Church of Farmington. She enjoyed camping, fishing, playing solitaire and cooking.

She is survived by her husband, Charles, of New Sharon; two sons, Frank Collins, of Henniker, N.H., and Bernard Collins, of New Sharon; two daughters, Betty Raymond, of Merrimack, N.H., and Kathy Kenney, of Sabattus; a brother, Bernard Thomas, of Farmington; three sisters, Iva Lake, of Farmington, Eldora Durrell, of Farmington, and Goldena Small, of Greenland, N.H.; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a sister, Glenna, and a brother, Fred.

Visitation hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, at Adams Funeral Home, 3 Court St., Farmington.

A funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday, June 15, at the funeral home. Interment will be at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Old Belgrade Road, Augusta.

Friends wishing may make donations in her memory to the American Diabetes Association, Maine Affiliate, PO Box 2208, Augusta ME 04330-2208.

Reba G. Damren

MOUNT VERNON — Reba Gretchen Damren, 79, of Wings Mills Road, died Monday, June 12, 2000, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Graybirch in Augusta.

She was born Jan. 2, 1921, in Mount Vernon, the daughter of Charles and Edith (Merrow) Damren. After graduating from Mount Vernon schools, Reba took special care of her parents until the time of their death. Later, she was employed by the Augusta House for several years and the State of Maine Department of Public Improvements for 17 years until her retirement.

She was a former member of Readfield Grange and a member of Dunn's Corner Baptist Church in Mount Vernon.

Reba was a very loving and caring woman, and her family and friends meant everything to her. She also showed a special love for cats.

She was predeceased by her parents, and three brothers, Charles E. Damren, George W. Damren, and Dorcas M. Dufresne.

She is survived by two sisters, Alice Dunn, and her husband, Rev. John Dunn, of Mount Vernon and Freeport, and Hope Davis, of Windsor; nine nieces and nephews, Patricia Bailey, and her husband, Jon, Ronald Hodgdon, and his wife, Marie, Donald Hodgdon, and his wife, Sharon, Thomas Deschaine, and his wife, Carlene, Debra French, and her husband, Ronald, George E. Damren, Ralph W. Damren, and his wife, Roberta, Linda Bickford, and her husband, Cressel, and Debra Brooks, and her husband, Leland; a special grandniece and grandnephew, Shannon and Shawn Hodgdon; and several other grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.

Friends and relatives are invited to visit from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta.

A funeral service celebrating Reba's life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, June 15, at Dunn's Corner Baptist Church, Wings Mills Road, Mount Vernon, with the Rev. John Dunn officiating. Following the service, Reba will be laid to rest next to her parents in the East Readfield Cemetery in Readfield.

Bradford W. Johnstone Sr.

MADISON — Bradford W. Johnstone Sr., 74, of 6 Fall St., Madison, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was born Aug. 10, 1926, in Hartland, a son of Bradford Wellington Johnstone and Doris Hunt, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in dairy husbandry from the University of Maine and from the University of Wyoming with an master's degree in chemistry and physics.

Brad was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II as a diesel mechanic.

Bradford was a foreman for 12 years with various construction companies throughout New England. He taught high-school math and science in the Maine School System for 15 years.

After retiring from teaching, Brad and his wife, Jean Ann, owned and operated The Family Store in Skowhegan for five years. His favorite hobby was wood-crafting.

He was a member of the Columbia Street Baptist Church in Bangor. He was a member of The Order of The Eastern Star, a Master Mason and member of The Maine Teachers Association.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Jean Ann Johnstone, of Madison, and five children, Pam Allen of Turner, Jan Doughty of Bristol, Conn., Bradford W. Johnstone Jr. of North Waterboro, Karen Bachelder of Damariscotta, Ellen Sanford, the youngest and cutest, of Windham; six grandchildren and four great grandsons, one great granddaughter; one uncle, Orman Hunt, and his wife, Hazel, of Skowhegan; one aunt, Marie Frost, of Albion; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Bradford was predeceased by three grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 15, at Heald Funeral Home, 61 Main Street, Springvale, with an Eastern Star service at 6 p.m. followed by a Masonic service at 6:15 p.m. Thursday.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 16, at the East Waterboro Free Baptist Church in East Waterboro.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you send donations to The Gary Pike House, 97 State St., Portland ME 04101; or The Children's Miracle Network, 22 Bramhall St., Portland ME 04102.

Paul W. Libby

WETHERSFIELD, Conn. —Paul W. Libby, 78, of Wethersfield, died Thursday, June 8, 2000, at his home following a long illness with cancer.

He was born Feb. 25, 1922, in Winslow, son of the late Clyde and Edna (Whitten) Libby, and attended Albion schools. He entered the U.S. Army in 1942 and was honorably discharged as a private a few years later.

He was employed in various jobs in the maintenance departments and mostly recently for the Miss Porter's School in Connecticut.

He was an avid sports fan.

He loved his nieces and sisters and enjoyed spending many holidays at his sisters' homes.

Survivors include two sisters, Leone Libby Lunt and Louise Libby McDavitt; niece, Libby Hodgdon, and grandnieces, Sarah Hodgdon and Kate Hodgdon.

A graveside committal service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, June 19, at Number Four Cemetery in Albion with the Rev. John Wrigglesworth officiating. Local arrangements are by Lawry Brothers Funeral Home of Fairfield.
