Alfred G. Oakes

EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y. —Alfred G. Oakes, 73, died Monday, June 12, 2000, at his home in East Syracuse.

He was born in Port Deposit, Md., and had resided in Fairfield and Waterville, Maine, and Syracuse and Pulaski, N.Y., before moving to East Syracuse.

He had retired from Colby College in Waterville and retired as the owner and operator of the Lake Street Barber Shop in Pulaski.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

His mother and father, Elvina (Baker) Oakes and William H. Oakes, predeceased him.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years the former Gloria Michaud; daughter, Maureen Huband, of East Syracuse; son, William Oakes, of Wisconsin; and a grandson.

There will be no calling hours, and a private service will be held, with burial at a later date. Arrangements were by Delaney & Greabell Funeral Home of East Syracuse.

Contributions in his name may be made to the American Cancer Society, 7145 Henry Clay Boulevard, Liverpool NY 13088.

Yvonne M. Pomerleau

WATERVILLE — Yvonne M. Pomerleau, 95, who resided at 93 Western Ave., died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at Oak Grove Nursing Home in Waterville.

She was born June 21, 1904, in St. Come, Quebec, Canada, daughter of Joseph and Odelinda (Rodrigue) Veilleux Vigue.

She married Wilfrid Pomerleau 48 years ago. He passed away in 1974. She was a housewife most of her life and a Waterville resident, and a devoted lifelong member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. She was a member of the Saint Anne Society and a communicant of the Blessed Sacrament Chapel.

Survivors include one son, Roland J. Pomerleau, and wife, Sunny, and one daughter, Juliette Pomerleau Henchey, and husband, John; six grandchildren, Brenda Pomerleau Breton and Debra Pomerleau Lemieux, Michael, Paul, Johnny Henchey, Teresa Henchey De Bendictis, and eight great-grandchildren; one loving sister, Florence Lessard, and two sisters-in-law, Dorielle Vigue and Marrietta Lessard Vigue.

She was predeceased by three sisters, Emma Bougie, Rose Poulin, Clarisse Veilleux Bouffard, and eight brothers, Emile, Eugene, Edmund, Leo-Paul, Ernest, Lionel, Armand and Antoine.

At her request there will be no visiting hours.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 15, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Elm Street, Waterville. Burial and committal prayers will follow at St. Francis Cemetery, Grove Street, Waterville. Arrangements are by Veilleux Funeral Home of Waterville.

Memorial donations may be made to the Servants of the Blessed Sacrament, 101 Silver St., Waterville ME 04901.

Theresa I. Rollins

WYTOPITLOCK — Theresa Irene Rollins, 81, a native of Palermo and resident of U.S. Route 2A here since 1945, died Jan. 15, 2000, at Madigan Estates in Houlton after a period of declining health.

Born in Palermo, June 22, 1918, the daughter of Fred Hamilton and Carrie Gertrude (Wentworth) Morang. She was raised in Palermo, attending local schools and was a 1937 graduate of Walker High School in Liberty.

Theresa married Everett Rollins, who died in 1985. She had lived in Portland at one time and was a psychiatric aide briefly at the former Augusta State Hospital.

Two of her nephews, Bernard Saban, of Palermo, and Carl Rollins, of Wytopitlock, both died previously.

Surviving are her nephews, Frederick Saban, of Weeks Mills, and Clive Rollins, of Wytopitlock; two brothers-in-law, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins, and all of their family members.

A graveside committal service will be held at noon, Thursday, June 15, followed by burial at Sand Hill Cemetery in Palermo with the Rev. Edward Hatch officiating. Gray & Pratt Funeral Directors of Windsor are in charge of service plans.

John L. Merrill

SOUTH SOLON — John Lander Merrill, 78, a practicing attorney for nearly 50 years, went to his eternal home Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, after a long, courageous battle with emphysema.

He was born April 19, 1922, in Skowhegan, the son of William Folsom Merrill and Jeannette Lander Merrill.

John attended local schools and graduated from Phillips Academy, in Andover, Mass. He entered Bowdoin College but left to join the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in the European Theater with the rank of staff sergeant.

Following the war, he returned to his studies at Bowdoin, graduating in 1948. He went on to receive his law degree from Boston University in 1952 and returned to his hometown to practice law with his father in the firm of Merrill and Merrill. John was admitted to the bar by his uncle, Edward F. Merrill. During his law career he was elected Somerset County Attorney and Somerset Probate Judge.

He was past master of Somerset Masonic Lodge A.F.& A.M., DeMolay Commandery 10, White Shrine, Past Patron of Sunset Chapter Order of Eastern Star, in Skowhegan, and Keystone Chapter Order of Eastern Star, Solon. He was a member of Bingham Congregational Church, where he was a deacon, Somerset Bar Association, Somerset County Republicans, School Administrative District 54 school board during the construction of the new high school, and a member of Federated Church, where he was on the finance board for many years.

Although dedicated to his family and his law profession, some of John's happiest hours were spent hunting at Upper Enchanted, and fishing and camping at Pierce Pond. He always yearned for the first spring brook fishing when the snow began to disappear and the ice began to melt.

Earlier years were spent at the family cottage at Pleasant Pond, where he and his wife of 52 years spent their honeymoon. He married Barbara Dow, of North Hampton, Mass., June 5, 1948.

After returning to Skowhegan, John and his family resided on Water Street, spending their summers at their farm in South Solon. They moved to their new home in South Solon in 1976, which was built entirely of wood cut on John's land by John, family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, of South Solon; three children, William F. Merrill, and his wife, Luciann "Midge," of South Solon, Harriet Merrill Davis, and her husband, Glen, of Hoboken, N.J., and Frank D. Merrill, and his wife, Nancy P., of Skowhegan; three grandchildren, Reagan T.W. Merrill, of Derry, N.H., Sean F. Merrill and Alaena S. Merrill, both of South Solon; a lifelong friend, Paul LaFond, of Skowhegan; one sister, Frances Sterling, of Texas; three nieces, Marilyn Gondeck, Janet Thorp, and Martha Sterling-Golden.

A celebration of his life will be held at the convenience of his family, in November. Masonic services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, at Smart and Edwards Funeral Home, 261 Madison Ave., Skowhegan.

Donations may be made in his memory, to Bingham Congregational Church, P.O. Box 114, Bingham 04920, Skowhegan Federated Church, Island Avenue, Skowhegan 04976, or American Lung Association of Maine, 122 State St., Augusta 04330-5615.

Virginia F. Black

CHINA — Virginia Fletcher Black, 94, of China, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at a Waterville hospital.

She was born in China, Jan. 12, 1906, the daughter of Robert and Sarah (Wiggin) Fletcher, and graduated from Erskine Academy, class of 1925.

She married Ernest "Bennie" Black in 1927, and they spent 65 wonderful years together before he passed away on Aug. 28, 1992.

Mrs. Black was a member of China Baptist Church for 79 years. She was active in the Women's Alliance and Bible study. She was also a member of Silver Lake Grange in China, where she served as past secretary and was active with the Albert Church Brown Library in China.

She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, reading and writing letters.

Mrs. Black was predeceased by her brothers, Stanley, Bill, Harold, Ralph, Byron, and Carl.

Survivors include her children, Donald Black, and his wife Barbara, of Amherst, Mass., and Frances Shorey, and her husband, Frank, of China and West Lebanon, N.H.; her sisters, Ruth Bumps, Florence Young, and Marjorie Bucklin; her brother, Paul Fletcher; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no public visiting hours.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, at China Baptist Church in China, with the Rev. Ronald Morrell officiating. Burial will follow, in Chadwick Cemetery, Route 32, South China.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to China Baptist Church, China 04926, or China Rescue, China 04926.

Arrangements are by Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, Fairfield.

Valaire Vigue

WINSLOW — Valaire Vigue, 80, of Winslow, beloved husband, father and grandfather, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at Waterville.

He was born June 1, 1920, in Beauceville, Quebec, the son of Charles and Vincentine Gilbert Vigue.

Mr. Vigue was a U.S. Army veteran.

In 1943 he married the former Jeanette Lagasse.

Mr. Vigue was part-owner and operator of C.H. Vigue and Sons, in Winslow, for 50 years.

He was predeceased by one son, Fredrick Vigue; two daughters, Maryann Jolicoeur, and Lorraine Vigue; his parents; and three brothers, Real, Waldo, and Lawrence Vigue; and one sister, Marie Dennis.

He is survived by his wife; five sons, Raymond, and wife, Linda Vigue, and Norman Vigue, all of Winslow, Robert Vigue and David Vigue, both of Waterville, and Armand, and wife, June Vigue, of Oakland; three daughters, Nancy, and husband, Ricky, and Annette Landry, all of Winslow, and Rosemarie, and husband, Ronald Liberty, of Fairfield; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and one brother, Victor Vigue, of Waterville.

There will be no visiting hours.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 6, at St. John's Catholic Church in Winslow. Burial follows at St. Francis Cemetery, Waterville.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the memory of Mr. Valaire Vigue to St. John's Catholic Church, Winslow.

Arrangements are by Veilleux Funeral Home, 8 Elm St., Waterville.

Angelina P. Kent

RANDOLPH — Angelina P. Kent, 94, of Kinderhook Street, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Facility, Glenridge Drive, Augusta.

She was born in Waterville, on July 23, 1906, the daughter of Philip and Caroline (King) Perry.

On Dec. 25, 1926, she married Plympton C. Kent Sr.

Mrs. Kent and her husband owned and operated Kent's Market in Gardiner for many years. She worked for C.F. Hathaway Company in Waterville for several years and for Margaret Chase Smith Handbags, where she retired in 1980.

She was a past member of Order of Eastern Star.

Mrs. Kent enjoyed fishing, bowling, and playing beano with her friends. She was especially proud to have the new Randolph Town Office built on property that she formerly owned.

She was predeceased by her husband, Plympton C. Kent Sr., June 6, 1972, a son, Plympton C. Kent Jr., in 1993, and two daughters, P. Diane Kent, in 1969, and G. Shirley Kent Peterson, in 1992.

Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Joan M. Kent, of Richmond; three grandchildren, Catherine Kent Gasper, and her husband, Robert, of Manchester, Steven Kent, of Bangor, and Andrew Kent, of West Gardiner; two great-grandchildren, Jason Gasper, of Brunswick, and Leslie Gasper, of Portland; and several nieces.

At her request, there will be no public visiting hours. A committal service and burial will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, in Richmond Cemetery, Main Street, Richmond.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, New England Division, Inc., 52 Federal St., Brunswick 04011-2194.

Arrangements are under the care of Amesbury-White Funeral Home, 39 Washington Ave., Gardiner.
