Florence E. Farina

1940-2002

PALMYRA and NEW LONDON, Conn. — Florence E. Farina, 61, died peacefully Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at a New London health care facility.

She was born in New London, Nov. 17, 1940, a daughter of Tracy and Irene (Merritt) Affeldt.

Mrs. Farina enjoyed cooking, gardening and bird watching.

She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Richard Farina Sr.; three children, Richard Farina Jr. and his wife, Terry, of North Stonington, Conn., Annette Pomroy and her husband, Jim, of Palmyra, and Stacey Landry of Plainville, Mass.; six grandchildren, Abigail, William, Kayla, Briana, Nicholas, and Michael; four sisters, Connie, Beverly, Sandra and Suzie; and brother, Tracey.

She was predeceased by her parents.

At her request the service will be private.

For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are in the care of D.H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, Pittsfield.

Col. Eugene J. Paradis, Ret., U.S. Marine Corps

1923-2002

OLD TOWN — Eugene Joseph Paradis, 79, husband of Cora (Rand) Paradis, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at a Bangor hospital.

He was born in Old Town, March 21, 1923, the son of Emile J. and Lydia (Sirois) Paradis.

Since his retirement from the service in July 1983, he had resided at Pushaw Pond, Old Town. Eugene graduated from Old Town High School in 1940 and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps at Southwest Harbor. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in April 1941, was commissioned second lieutenant in June 1948, and retired as a colonel in July 1973.

During World War II, he served on the USS Denver as a member of the Marine Detachment from 1942-1944 and participated in the campaign for Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands. As a member of First Marine Regiment, 1st MarDiv, from 1950-1951 he participated in the landing at Inchon and the operations for the capture of Seoul, Korea, the Chosin Reservoir Campaign, North Korea, and the Spring-Summer offensive in the cental sector of Korea.

During the Vietnam War (1966-1967) he served as Special Liaison Officer of the commanding General III MAF to the Commanding General, Second Republic of Korea Marine Brigade. During his 32 years of service he had received more than 40 personal and unit awards and citations for combat service. His personal decorations include the Legion of Merit with V, Bronze Star with V, Navy commendation Medal with V, and a Purple Heart. He also held citations from the Republics of Korea, Vietnam and the Philippines.

Following his retirement he attended the University of Maine and graduated in 1979 with a bachelors degree in Public Administration.

He was twice elected to the Old Town city council (1974-1980) and served two terms as council president. In a special election he was elected to the Maine House of Representatives for the 109th (1979) Legislature. During his service in the Legislature, he was a strong proponent of the forest industry, veterans' issues and law enforcement. He served during the 113th Legislature as assistant minority leader. He was a communicant of Holy Family Parish, a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3381 of Old Town, the Retired Officers Association, a member of the Chosin Few, the American Legion, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the Orono-Old Town Kiwanis, and a cooperator of Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Cora Frances (Rand) Paradis of Old Town; two sons, Col. Emile E. Paradis, ret., USMC, of Atlanta, and Paul X. Paradis and his wife, Elizabeth, of Old Town; three daughters, Ethel Lynne Sawyer and her husband, Bruce M., of Ellsworth, Jeanne M. Paradis and Maria Hamlin of Old Town, and Michelle A. McClellan and her husband, Michael, of Raymond; seven grandchildren, Mathieu Paradis of Oakland, Calif., Marc Paradis of New Orleans, Toby Paradis of Old Town, Todd M. Sawyer and his wife, Angela, of Ellsworth, Katherine Sawyer of Winthrop, Mass., Margaret McClellan and Patrick McClellan of Raymond; two sisters, Annette King of Gouldsboro and Lydia Baker of Goodyear, Ariz.; and a brother, Master Gunnery Sgt. Mitchell P. Paradis, USMC, ret., of Sun City West, Ariz.

He was predeceased by a son, Rand Joseph Paradis; and two sisters, Laura R. Cathcart and Marguerite Finley.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Birmingham Funeral Home, 287 South Main St., Old Town, where members of the VFW Post 3381 of Old Town will conduct a chapel service at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Family Parish, with the Rev. Normand Richard, celebrant. Burial with full military honors will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lawn Dale Cemetery in Old Town.

Immediately following the Mass, all are welcome to the Holy Family Parish Center for a light luncheon and continued fellowship.

Barbara Mae Witham Rogers

1932-2002

CUMBERLAND — Barbara Mae Witham Rogers, 70, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, after battling cancer for eight years.

She was born in Waterville, Aug. 11, 1932, the daughter of Edward Payson and Bertha Mae Hall Witham Jr. and graduated from Pennell Institute in 1950. She married Frank Rogers on March 20, 1954.

Mrs. Rogers was a devoted, loving and caring wife, loving, nurturing, protecting and wonderful mother, and a caring, giving, loving grandmother. She was a classic homemaker whose grandchildren brought her the greatest joy and whose family was her life.

Surviving are her husband of 48 years, Frank Rogers of Cumberland; seven children, Mrs. Henry Candance Frizzell of Standish, Mrs. John Cinde Tilton of Saco, Mrs. Charles Jodie Parrish of Milton, Vt., Mr. Russell Rogers and his wife, Cynthia, of Scarborough, Mrs. Adam Vickie Darling of Gray, Mr. Timothy Rogers and his wife, Virginia, of Cumberland, and Mr. Bradley Rogers and his wife, Elizabeth, of New Gloucester; one sister, Elizabeth Reny of Waterville; one niece and one nephew; 18 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents and a brother, John Witham.

Visiting hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Wilson Funeral Home, 24 Shaker Road, Gray. The funeral service will be private.

Frances Lucille (Emery) Buckley

1922-2002

PITTSFIELD — Frances L. (Emery) Buckley, 80 of Pittsfield, passed away Monday morning, Nov. 25, 2002, at Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield after a brief illness.

She was born in Pittsfield, March 30, 1922, the daughter of Carroll C. and Erma M. (Ross) Emery. She attended Pittsfield schools and Maine Central Institute.

Frances was a lifelong resident of Pittsfield and a member of the First Congregational Church of Pittsfield. She was an avid gardener and her flower gardens were a thing of beauty to behold to everyone who visited her home in spring and summer. She loved her children dearly and always kept rooms full of toys to entertain her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her loved ones will sorely miss her.

Survivors include her three children, Darrell G. Brown of Fayetteville, N.C., Robert K. Brown of Boerne, Texas, and Georgie S. Farrin of Pittsfield; grandchildren, Darrell Brown Jr. and Robert C. Brown of Washington, Jennifer Brown of Fayetteville, Bobbi-Jo Hebert of Bradford, R.I., Christopher Brown of Boerne, and Amy Farrin and Nanette Farrin Ardry of Portland; her great-grandchildren, James, Jeffery and Emily Hebert, Elizabeth Brown, Camden Ardry and Dominic Wilson; her brother, Lawrence Emery, and sisters Glenice Emery and Carol Jean Nichols, all of Pittsfield.

She was predeceased by her husband, Wilton S. Buckley, Feb. 15, 2001. Her sisters, Dorothy Dallaire and Nena Pollard and a brother, Kenneth Emery also predeceased her.

Frances requested cremation. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29, at the Village Cemetery in Burnham. She will be interred beside her beloved husband, Buck.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital,501 St. Jude Place, Memphis TN 38105.

Eldon C. Buzzell

1921-2002

SKOWHEGAN — Eldon C. Buzzell, 81, of Skowhegan, died Nov. 25, 2002, at Windship Green Nursing Home in Bath.

He was born in Skowhegan, July 28, 1921, the son of John J. and Rena (Buzzell) Buzzell.

Eldon served in the Army Corps of Engineers from 1942 to 1945, and in the Navy Reserves from 1945 to 1954.

He was an avid reader. He also loved horses, country music and dancing.

He is survived by his ex-wife, Barbara Buzzell of Skowhegan; three sons, Charles Buzzell of Norway, Michael Buzzell and his wife, Lucy, of Clinton, and Richard Buzzell and his wife, Sue, of Brunswick; six grandchildren, Heidi Rodzen and her husband, Tristan, Nicholas, Michael, Rachel, Clayton and Charlie; and one great-granddaughter, Teaghan.

Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29, at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan, where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Mark Tanner officiating. Burial will be private, 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, at the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Augusta.

Arrangements are by Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, Skowhegan.

Esther A. Fredrikson

1911-2002

CHINA — Esther A. Fredrickson, 91, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

She was born in Petersham, Mass., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Benson.

She lived most of her life in Belmont, Mass., where she met and married her late husband, Arvid Fredrikson. Together they owned a construction business in Belmont.

In 1970, Esther and Arvid retired to Damariscotta and built a home along the Damariscotta River. After the passing of her husband in 1975, she moved to China to be closer to her family. Esther took great pride in her gardens and enjoyed sewing and cooking.

Survivors include her son, Edward Fredrikson Sr. and his wife, Elaine; her grandson, Edward Fredrikson Jr. and his children, Maeghan and Amy Fredrikson.

The service will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the China Rescue, China Village.

Amberann George, A.R.R.T., R.M.

1945-2002

LA ROMANA, Dominican Republic — Amberann George, 57, the beloved sister of Alison and Frederick Hawes and Andrea and Richard Taylor died unexpectedly Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, in La Romana.

She was born in Augusta, Maine, Sept. 13, 1945, the daughter of the late James Jr. and Marcia (Tillson) George. She attended schools in Waterville, Maine, and graduated from Waterville High School. She later attended and graduated from the Thayer Hospital School of Radiologic Technology.

She was certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in 1965 and became employed by Thayer Hospital in Waterville as a staff radiographer in the same year. Amber later received training in radiation therapy at Augusta General Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She was a radiation therapist and later program director for the Mid-Maine Medical Center School of Radiologic Technology. Amber served as chief technologist for Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor, Maine, from 1987 to 1999, before becoming the division director for diagnostics and therapeutics at MDI Hospital. In 2000 she became the director of diagnostic imaging services at Littleton Regional Hospital in Littleton, N.H.

Amber was appointed as a member of the Radiologic Technology Board of Examiners for the state of Maine in 1983. She co-authored the state of Maine's first limited licensure exam for radiographers in 1984. She was a member of the American Society of Radiology Technologists and the American Hospital Radiology Administrators. Amber served at various times as program chairperson, secretary, college bowl chairperson, board member and state representative for the New England Conference of Radiologic Technologists.

Amber is survived by her sisters, Alison Hawes and her husband, Frederick, of Fairfield, Maine, and Andrea Taylor and her husband, Richard, of Montpelier, Vt.; her nephew, James Hawes of Jackman, Maine; and nieces, Jennifer Taylor, of Woburn, Mass., and Susannah Taylor and Molly Taylor, both of Montpelier.

A memorial service will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, at Ross Funeral Home, West Main Street, Littleton, N.H. A reception will follow at Littleton Regional Hospital.

Those who wish may send a memorial contribution to the Amberann George Fund, c/o Littleton Regional Hospital, 600 St. Johnsbury Road, Littleton N.H., 03561. Contributions made will be used for breast care services provided by the hospital in Amber's memory. Burial will take place at a later date at Maplewood Cemetery in Fairfield, Maine, with a committal service to be announced.

Wileen (Bean) Grondin-Greeley

1952-2002

ST. ALBANS — Wileen (Bean) Grondin-Greeley, 50, died Nov. 25, 2002, at a Bangor hospital following a long illness.

She was born in Rangely, July 14, 1952, a daughter of Willis and Lorraine (Campbell) Bean. She graduated from Skowhegan High School and attended the University of Maine at Orono.

She had retired from the Chancellor's Office at the University of Maine.

Wileen will be remembered for her love of life, of people, of dancing, camping and fishing.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Greeley of St. Albans; her father, Willis and stepmother, Charlene of Norridgewock; a son, Jeremiah Grondin, and a daughter, Ashley Grondin, both of Bangor; a brother, Scott Bean and his wife, Carolyn, of Palmyra, N.Y.; a stepsister, Marlene Menger and her husband, Wayne, of Weeks Mills; a stepbrother, Daniel Reed of Cape Elizabeth; a nephew, Shagan Bean, and a niece, Saydra Bean; and her former sister-in-law and mother of Shagan and Saydra, Sandra Bean, all of Palmyra.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, at Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Newport, where a time of remembrance will be held at 3:30 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1 Main St., Suite 300, Topsham 04086. Envelopes will also be available at the funeral home.
