Michael David Bourgoin

CLINTON — Michael David Bourgoin, 17, of Clinton, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at a Waterville hospital from complications of injuries sustained from a snowmobile accident earlier in the month.

He was born in Waterville, on May 25, 1982, the son of David M. and Denise M. (Dubois) Bourgoin. He was in his senior year at Lawrence High School, in Fairfield, where he was a member of the football team and belonged to the "Rowdies", a fan support group that follows both the boys and girls basketball teams. He also ran track and played intramural volleyball at Lawrence.

Michael loved the outdoors, enjoying fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, and four wheeling. Many of his peers remember Michael as an "affable, cheerful, and outgoing young man who had the skill to get along with others, and make their day a bit brighter."

He was a great role model, athlete, and a wonderful student.

His paternal grandparents, Edmund and Albertine Bourgoin, predeceased him.

Survivors include his parents, David and Denise, of Clinton; his maternal grandmother, Helen Dubois, of Waterville; many aunts, uncles and cousins. Michael will also be sadly missed by his girlfriend, LoraLee Levenseller and many dear and close friends. There is not enough paper or time to mention them.

There will be no visiting hours. A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Friday, March 3, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, High Street, Fairfield, with Fr. Marcel Dumoulin officiating. Spring interment will be in Greenlawn Rest Cemetery in Clinton.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Michael Bourgoin Memorial Football Fund, C/O Helen Dubois, 14 Gilbert St., Waterville 04901, or Kennebec Federal Savings Bank, 70 High St., Waterville 04901.

Arrangements are by Lawry Brothers Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Hilda J. Clark

HARTLAND — Hilda Johnson Clark, 89, of Hartland and Houston, Texas, died Monday, April 24, 2000, at her home in Houston.

She was born Aug. 30, 1910, in Hartland, the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Tibbetts, and attended local schools, graduating from Hartland Academy.

Mrs. Clark married John Johnson, in 1939, and they had one son, David. Her husband died in 1969.

She and her husband were instrumental in the opening of Brooks Pentecostal Church, in Brooks.

Hilda also had a large business of selling homemade baby sweater sets throughout the country during her years in Hartland.

Hilda married John Clark in 1972 and moved to Texas in 1976, where she worked as a telemarketer.

She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, John Johnson, and her son David, in 1997.

Hilda is survived by her husband, John Clark; three granddaughters; three great-granddaughters; one stepson; four stepgrandchildren; a nephew, Robert Tibbetts, and his wife, Emily, of Norwood, Mass.; and some cousins.

A graveside service at Pine Grove Cemetery, in Hartland, will be scheduled and announced at a later date. Rev. Ronald Parker will officiate.

Anna C. Mantouvales

WATERVILLE — Anna Cecilia Mantouvales, 81, died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at Lakewood Manor.

She was born in Waterville, April 28, 1919, the daughter of Charles and Mary Corey.

Mrs. Mantouvales had been employed for 31 years at General Electric, in Somersworth, N.H., as a line technician.

She was a former member of the Maronite Guild.

Mrs. Mantouvales was predeceased by her parents, and her son, Anthony Mantouvales, who died in Vietnam in 1967, during the Vietnam conflict.

She is survived by a brother, Elias J. "Al" Corey, of Waterville, and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no public visiting hours. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, May 8, at St. Joseph's Maronite Catholic Church, Front Street, Waterville, with Rev. Samuel Najjar officiating and Rev. Mr. Peter Joseph assisting. Committal prayers and burial will follow in St. Francis Cemetery, Waterville. It is requested that flowers be omitted.

Arrangements are by Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm St., Waterville.

Shirley A. Work

CHINA — Shirley Ann Work, 51, of China, formerly of Hollis and Camden, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at a Portland hospital following a long illness.

She was born June 25, 1948, in Camden, a daughter of Donald and Alice (White) Welt. Shirley attended local schools and was a 1966 graduate of Camden High School.

Following high school she accepted a position with Federal Loan and Building Association of Portland.

On Oct. 14, 1967, she married Gary Work.

She continued to work until 1968 when they began to raise a family. In the mid-1970s she began working at Emery Waterhouse Company, in Portland. In 1986 she and her husband began to operate Gorham Laundromat, which they ran until the mid-1990s. She continued to work part time at Your Country Store, in Hollis, until 1996, when she retired due to poor health.

She was a past president and member of Hollis Honkers Snowmobile Club, and served as chairperson of the Hollis Park and Recreation committee.

Mrs. Work coached girls softball for ages 13 to 15 for five years in Hollis. She was an avid University of Maine women's basketball fan.

Shirley is survived by her husband, of China; her parents, of Camden; two daughters, Mrs. David (Lisa) Miller, of Scarborough, and Jennifer Work, of Portland; a grandson, Daniel Miller, of Scarborough; and a brother, Ronald Welt, of Camden.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 6, at Conroy-Tully South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Cancer Society, Maine Affiliate, 52 Federal St., Brunswick 04011.

Maynard S. Stevens

ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. — Maynard S. Stevens, 88, of Belgrade, Maine, died Sunday, April 30, 2000, at his Florida residence.

He was born Dec. 16, 1911, in Unity, Maine, the son of Lynn J. and Frances Reynolds Stevens. He attended Coburn Classical Institute, Unity High School and William and Mary College.

Mr. Stevens worked for the Maine State Highway Commission, the United States Postal Service, and the Belfast and Moosehead Lake Railroad for 30 years. He owned and operated a poultry business for several years, owned a general store, known as Maplewood Store, and owned a small restaurant, known as The Shack, which operated only during the vegetable canning season.

He also served as the town tax collector.

Maynard served in World War II with the ATS on the X26 during the invasion of Europe.

He was a member of the Masons' Star in the West Lodge 85, in Unity, for over 60 years.

Mr. Stevens was an avid golfer and round and square dancer.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Pratt Stevens; two sons, Arthur Maynard Stevens, of Wichita, Kan., and Frederick Lynn Stevens, of Oakland; one daughter, Gail Frances Bailey, of Benton; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, at Unity Union Church, in Unity.

Arrangements are by Kelly memorial Funeral Home, Zephyrhills, Fla.

Esther C. Kempton

SKOWHEGAN — Esther Carolyn (York) Kempton, 93, of Skowhegan, formerly of Farmington, died Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at Cedar Ridge Nursing Home, in Skowhegan.

She was born in Newburgh, March 3, 1907, the daughter of Walter Irving and Ada Aralyn Cookson) York. She spent her early years attending Newburgh and Carmel schools.

After her mother passed away, she spent time at the home of her cousin, Walter York, and later with Forrest and Jessie Williams, in Caratunk.

Esther graduated from Farmington Normal School.

She taught in several schools in Maine, including those in The Forks and Auburn.

Esther then moved to Massachusetts. There she earned a bachelor's and a master's degree at Boston University. She earned many credits by traveling and writing papers.

She taught 39 years in Maine and Massachusetts, retiring in Quincy, Mass., on June 30, 1972.

Esther enjoyed a cottage on Clearwater Lake, in Industry, for 19 years, where she spent many happy summers with her sister-in-law, Lila Kempton.

She was a member of Massachusetts Teachers Association, Maine Retired Teachers Association, and Audubon Society.

Esther enjoyed bird watching, traveling and gardening.

She was predeceased by her only son, Leon Coleman Kempton, who passed away in July, 1993.

Esther is survived by her lifelong friend, Anne Marcho, of Carmel; daughter-in-law, Jeanne Kempton, of Beverly, N.J.; granddaughters, Terri Kempton Reinken, of Salisbury, Md., Carol Kempton Palma, of Cherry Hill, N.J., and Karen Kempton Crago, of Burlington, N.J.; grandsons, Michael Kempton, of Beverly, N.J., Thomas Kempton, of Beverly, N.J., Gary Kempton, of Beverly, N.J., and Dana Kempton, of Skowhegan; and many great-grandchildren.

At the request of the family, there will be no visitation hours.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 10, at Adams Funeral Home, 3 Court St., Farmington.

Friends wishing, may make donations in Esther's memory, to Farmington Public Library, 117 Academy Street, Farmington 04938.

Lurene F. McIntosh

RANGELEY — Lurene Faye McIntosh, 65, of Rangeley, died Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at Central Maine Medical Center, in Lewiston, where she had been a patient for a week, following a short illness.

She was born Oct. 24, 1934, in Dallas Plantation, the daughter of Harold and Faye (Bursiel) Ross. She attended school at the one-room schoolhouse, in Dallas Plantation.

She worked at Wamco for 22 years, then worked at Stubby's Market, until her death.

She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, mowing her lawn, crocheting, and her soaps.

She was predeceased by a sister, Carlene Hinkley.

She is survived by her husband, Elmer McIntosh of Rangeley; her children, Faye Boyce, of Kingfield, Jim Beedy, of Rangeley, Kathy Coon, of North Kingstown, R.I., Karen Seamon, of Rangeley, Bill McIntosh, of Standish, and Randy McIntosh, of Georgetown, Conn.; a brother, Earl Ross, of Rangeley; two sisters, Phyllis Moody, of Phillips, Ernastine Savage, of Strong; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

At the request of the family, there will be no visitation hours.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, June 9, at Church of the Good Shepherd, Rangeley, with Fr. Seth Richmond officiating.

Arrangements under the direction of Adams Funeral Home, Main Street, Phillips.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made, in her memory, to Church of The Good Shepherd, Rangeley.
