Harold Higgins

PITTSFIELD — Lt. Col. Harold D. Higgins, 82, of Pittsfield, died peacefully Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, at his Ocala, Fla., home.

He was born July 26, 1918, in Phillips, the only child to Dr. Everett and Hazel Higgins.

He graduated in 1936 from Lewiston High School and the University of Maine in 1940 with honors in civil engineering.

He was enrolled in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program, and was commissioned as a U.S. Army officer upon his graduation. He retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1960.

He then attended the University of Connecticut, where he obtained his teaching certificate and taught school until 1974. He then retired and returned to his family home in Maine.

He was predeceased by his wife, Martha, in 1984, after which he moved to his long-desired Florida destination.

Survivors include his wife, Norma, and two stepchildren, Jeanne Anne Powers and Jack Lee, all of Florida; three sons, Wallace Higgins, of Newton, Mass., Michael Higgins, of Norwalk, Conn., Daniel Higgins and his wife, Cyndi, of Pittsfield; a daughter, Cynthia Higgins, and a granddaughter, Caitlin Higgins, both of Madison, Wis.

There was a memorial service Dec. 2 in Ocala, Fla. There will be no service in Maine.

Donations may be made in his name to the Community Christmas Project, c/o Earl Dean, RR1 Box 3890, Pittsfield ME 04967.

Wadsworth L. Hinds

WATERVILLE — Wadsworth L. Hinds, 85, of Waterville, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at Thayer Unit, MaineGeneral Medical Center, Waterville, after a brief illness.

He was born May 13, 1915, in Portland, son of Charles B. and Augusta (Wadsworth) Hinds.

He graduated from Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Mass., and from a combined Dartmouth College-Massachusetts Institute of Technology program in chemical engineering. He was employed for more than 40 years in the Keyes Fibre Co. research department in Waterville.

"Waddy," as everyone called him, married Cornelia Hunt in 1938 and raised his three sons, William, James and Charles in Waterville.

"Waddy" and "Corny" were married for 62 years and were always a very close and loving couple. They enjoyed traveling together to places all over the world including Asia, Africa, South America and Australia.

They also both enjoyed skiing and had a home near Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. "Waddy" also greatly enjoyed golf, his camp at East Pond, and taking photographs of all kinds.

"Waddy" was active in community affairs in Waterville, including serving as campaign chairman of the Community Chest and being ringmaster for the Cub Scout circus for 15 years.

He was active in his church, the Universalist Unitarian Church of Waterville, serving as its treasurer and on its Endowment Fund Committee.

He was well known to many Waterville-area residents for his free help with income taxes and for volunteering to take photographs of residents at nursing homes.

Survivors include his wife, Cornelia; three sons, William C., and his wife, Lynda, of Pacific Palisades, Calif., James W., and his wife, Patricia, of Orono, and Charles H., of Scarborough; a grandson, Christopher; two granddaughters, Sarah and Lucy; and a brother, Aurelius S., and his wife, Norma, of Wilton.

At the request of the family, there will be no public visiting hours.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at the Universalist Unitarian Church, Elm and Silver streets, Waterville.

Arrangements are by Redington Funeral Home of Waterville.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to The Universalist Unitarian Church, PO Box 435, Waterville ME 04901; or MaineGeneral Medical Center, 149 North St., Waterville ME 04901.

Paul O. Nile Sr.

NORTH ANSON — Paul O. Nile Sr., 74, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan.

He was born April 15, 1926, son of Prentice E. and Lillian C. (Hutchinson) Nile in Farmington, and attended Farmington schools. He married Norma Heath on Dec. 23, 1944, in Kingfield.

As a young man, Paul was employed as a mechanic for several years. Then, he was a lumberman for over 40 years, working in the surrounding area. He retired in the late 1980s.

He was a member of the Knights of Pythias in West Farmington.

He enjoyed playing guitar and being with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and friends. He also enjoyed hunting.

Surviving are his wife, Norma Nile, of North Anson; seven sons, Dennis C. Nile, of Rockland, David Nile, of New Vineyard, Douglas P. Nile, of New Vineyard, Danny E. Nile, of North Anson, Paul O. Nile Jr., of New Portland, Frank O. Nile, of Embden, and Daniel Parker, of Phillips; two daughters, Dayle Norton, of New Portland, and Eileen McDonald, of North Anson; a brother, Clyde Nile, of West Farmington; two sisters, Shereen Swett and Irene Fletcher, both of West Farmington; 38 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A son, Peter; and three brothers, Prentice, Philip, and Lee, predeceased him.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, at Adams Funeral Home, 108 Court St., Farmington, with visitation one hour before the service.

Interment will be made at Fairview Cemetery, Farmington.

Friends who wish may make donations in his memory to the American Lung Association of Maine, 122 State St., Augusta ME 04330-5615.

Alton F. Young

ARLINGTON, Mass. — Alton F. "Ozzie" Young, of Arlington, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000.

He was the beloved husband of the late Muriel Grace (Conlon) and Maura (Looney), loving father of Richard A. and his wife, Jean, of Oakland, Maine, Jayne A. Landry and her husband, Paul, of Rochester, Mich., and David R., and his wife, Marcianna, of Bedford, Mass., dear brother of Dustin P. "Duddy" Young, of Billerica, Mass., devoted grandfather of Nicole James, and her husband, Brandon, of Michigan, Mathew Young, and his wife, Jennifer, and Mary Young, all of Maine, and Joseph and Robert Landry, both of Michigan; great-grandfather of Tasha Young.

He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, at Saville & Grannan Funeral Home, 418 Massachusetts Ave., Arlington Center.

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at First Baptist Church, 819 Massachusetts Ave., Arlington.

Burial will be made at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Arlington.

Memorial donations in his name may be made to Healthcare Dimensions, 254 South St., Waltham MA 02453; or Arlington Fire Department, Local 1297 Honor Guard, 1 Monument Place, Arlington MA 02474, in recognition of the fact he was a retired 30-year Arlington firefighter.

Josephine M. Soper

OAKLAND — Josephine M. Soper, 74, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at Mount St. Joseph Nursing Home in Waterville.

She was born Aug. 26, 1926, in Waterville, daughter of Hanson and Ida (Caswell) Clement, and attended local schools.

She was employed at Keyes Fibre Co. in Shawmut and later for Diamond International Corporation in Oakland for many years.

She was a member of the Mountain Top Christian Fellowship in Oakland and was active at the Muskie Center in Waterville. She loved cooking and spending time with her family and enjoyed large family gatherings.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Frank Soper Jr.; her stepmother, Avis Richardson Clement; and two brothers, Theron and Leo Clement.

Survivors include a son, James Soper and his wife, Jennifer, of Oakland and Greenville; two daughters, Linda Getchell and her husband, Al, of Vassalboro, and Jody Soper-Wright and her husband, David, of Oakland; four brothers, Malcolm and Erlon Clement, of Fairfield, Errol Clement, of Benton, and Harry Clement, of Waterville; sister, Christine Clement Bickford, of Fairfield; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

A spring graveside service will be held at the Lake View Cemetery in Oakland. Arrangements are by Wheeler Funeral Home of Oakland.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Muskie Center, 38 Gold St., Waterville ME 04901; or Mountain Top Christian Fellowship, 111 High St., Oakland ME 04963.

Raymond R. Tobey

WINSLOW — Raymond R. Tobey (HubCap Man), 40, of Winslow, died Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 30, 2001, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Thayer Campus, Waterville.

He was born Dec. 2, 1960, in Winslow, son of Harold and Rose (St. Onge) Tobey, and graduated from Winslow High School, Class of 1980.

He owned and operated Ray's Towing & Snow Plowing. He also sold hubcaps for many years in Winslow. A great NASCAR fan, he sold many NASCAR collectibles.

He was predeceased by his father, Harold Tobey, in 1978.

Survivors include his mother, Rose Tobey, of Winslow; one sister, Carolyn and her husband, Larry Ricker, of North Vassalboro; one brother, Bernard Tobey and his wife, Linda, of New Zealand; his grandmother, Edith Farris, of Winslow; several aunts and uncles.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, at the Redington Funeral Home, 5 Park St., Waterville.

A funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, at the funeral home with the Rev. Russell Chase officiating. Spring inurnment will be held at the Greeley Corner Cemetery in Palermo.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Rose Tobey, Route 3 Box 5780, China Road, Winslow ME 04901.

Gertrude L. Cargill

WINDSOR — Our beloved mother, Gertrude L. Cargill, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Sunday, March 25, 2001, at Portland.

She was born July 20, 1921, in Somerville, the daughter of Frank and Bessie (Coose) Hisler.

She had made her home with Cheryl Pratt, and companion, Keith Belz, for several years.

Gertrude was a member of North Windsor Baptist Church and was employed at Veterans Affairs Hospital at Togus, Hazzard Shoe Co. in Augusta, and Taylor Shoe Co. in Augusta for many years.

She was predeceased by her husband, Carl J. Cargill, April 28, 1981. She was also predeceased by her brothers, Frank, Forrest and Ross Hisler, as well as sisters, Bessie Hilt and Lucy Peaslee.

Survivors include her daughters, Esther Weaver and her husband, Duane, of Jefferson, Elaine Brann and her husband, Ronald, of Jefferson, Cheryl Pratt and her companion, Keith Belz, of Windsor; her son, C. Robert Cargill and his wife, Margaret (Trudy), of South China; her grandchildren, Duane Weaver Jr. and his wife, Lisa, of Augusta, Darrin Weaver and his wife, Sandra, of Windsor, Lana McCormick and her husband, Steven, of Whitefield, Ronald (Jeff) Brann and his wife, Kellie, of Augusta, Darrell Brann, of Jefferson, Amy Bennett and her husband, Scott, of Leesville, La., Seth Pratt and his companion, Jennifer Boynton, of Augusta, Karin Jones and her husband, Donald, of Winslow, Shaughn Cargill and his companion, Samantha Gilbert, of South China, and Shayne Cargill, of South China; eight great-grandchildren, Darrin II, Dakota and Dustin Weaver, of Windsor, David McCormick, of Whitefield, Abby and Patrick Bennett, of Leesville, Dylan and Kaitlynn Jones, of Winslow. She is also survived by sisters, Beulah Eaton, and her husband, Percy, of Windsor, and Elsie Pullen, and her husband, Kenneth, of Augusta; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours will be held from 1 p.m. until a 3 p.m. funeral Thursday, March 29, at North Windsor Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to North Windsor Baptist Church.
