Diane N. Carroll

PALERMO — Diane N. Carroll, 50, passed away Monday, March 26, 2001, after an extensive battle with cancer.

She was born June 16, 1950, at Carroll Plantation, and was lovingly raised in Palermo by her aunt and uncle, Merle and Hattie Severance.

Diane attended Palermo Consolidated School and graduated from Erskine Academy in 1969.

She was a caring homemaker and a part-time substitute teacher at Palermo School.

Diane enjoyed her crafts of all types, and touched the hearts of everyone who knew her.

She will be sadly missed by her husband, Robert Carroll, of Palermo; sons, John Carroll and his wife, Rhonda, of Freedom, and Kevin Carroll, of Palermo; two grandsons, D.J. and Aaron McKinnon, of Freedom.

She also is survived by her half-sister, Gail Nickless; two half-brothers, Kevin and Edward Byers; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 29, at Palermo Christian Church.

Friends and relatives may send a donation in Diane's memory to the American Cancer Society, Maine Division Inc., 52 Federal St., Brunswick ME 04011.

Francis R. Daigle

PALERMO — Francis Romeo "Froggie" Daigle, 71, of Palermo, died at Inland Hospital in Waterville, Tuesday, March 27, 2001, after a brief illness.

He was born July 8, 1929, in Waterville, son of Frank and Clarabelle Daigle. He was raised in Waterville by Mr. and Mrs. Everett Abbott Sr. and their five children.

Francis and Martha (Jenness) Daigle married April 3, 1968; she died July 29, 1989.

Survivors include a son, Robert Francis Frappier, of Skowhegan; the whereabouts of his other children are unknown. He has several grandchildren.

For the past three and one half years, Francis has lived contentedly with the Peter Nerber family in Palermo. He attended the Muskie Center in Waterville during this time and made many friends there.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the funeral to be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 30, at the Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm St., Waterville, with the Rev. Mr. Peter Joseph officiating. Burial will be at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Belgrade at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to Senior Spectrum, Muskie Center, Day Break Program, 38 Gold St., Waterville ME 04901.

John A. Hughes

CONCORD — John Arthur "Jack" Hughes, 71, of Concord, died Sunday, March 25, 2001, at his home in Lakeland, Fla.

He was born May 13, 1929, in Bingham, son of Hugh J. and Dorothy E. (Rich) Hughes.

Jack was a 21-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, retiring to Bingham in 1970.

He and his father, Hugh, owned and operated a barber shop in Bingham for many years.

He was a member of the Stanley Bean Post No. 99 American Legion in Bingham.

Survivors include his wife, Florence H. Hughes, of Concord and Lakeland, Fla.; two sisters, Margaret Fish, of Owls Head, and Nancy Crockett and her husband, Charles, of Owls Head; a brother, Dale Hughes and his wife, Carol, of Kansas; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A spring graveside committal service will be announced later to be held at the Bingham Village Cemetery. Local arrangements are by Giberson Funeral Home in Bingham.

Edward C. Knowles

SIDNEY — Edward C. Knowles, 73, died unexpectedly Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at his Middle Road home in Sidney.

He was a longtime resident of Oakland and had moved to Sidney over 10 years ago.

He was born Nov. 16, 1927, in Oakland, son of Edward and Olive (Powell) Knowles.

Edward was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was employed most of his life as a construction worker for Local No. 1284.

He loved to help people and assisted many people with appointments and chores. He would get together with friends to play music and played guitar at several local nursing homes. He was an active member of the Pentecostal Church of Faith.

He was predeceased by a brother, Harvey Knowles, and two sisters, Lillian Brown and Etta Clark.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Viola (Crowell) Knowles; two daughters, Donna Haines and companion, Darcy Carrier, of Oakland, and Rose Loisel and her husband, Rick, of Clinton; three brothers, Ronald Knowles, of Oakland, Donald Knowles, of Friendship, and Gerald Knowles, of Skowhegan; sister, Violet Goldrup, of Oakland; three grandchildren, Clifford Haines III and his wife, Clair, of Phoenix, Ariz., Rick Loisel Jr. and Pooh Loisel, both of Clinton; seven great-grandchildren, Dillion Lebree, Coco, Brittney, Taylor, and Bucky Loisel, Kyle Haines and Ricky Roy.

Friends are invited to visit from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 29, at the Wheeler Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Oakland. Following cremation a funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 2, at the Father Leonard LeClair Memorial Chapel, Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Old Belgrade Road, Route 27, Augusta.

Those who wish may make memorial donations to the American Lung Association, 122 State St., Augusta ME 04330.

Mary M. Lambert

STRONG — Mary Monohon Lambert, 83, of Strong, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington following a courageous battle against cancer with her loving family at her side.

She was born Oct. 4, 1917, in North Anson, daughter of Sidney W. Monohon and Emily Monohon Livingston, and attended local schools, graduating from Anson Academy.

She was the widow of Virgil M. Lambert, who died Feb. 24, 2000.

She was a stalwart participant in numerous community activities which included membership in the Strong United Methodist (UM) Church, UM Women's Club, lifetime member of Oppalumski Chapter of The Order of The Eastern Star where she held several offices and was Past Worthy Matron, Past Mother Adviser to the Rainbow Girls, Franklin County Extension, charter member of the Strong Historical Society, member of the Strong Senior Citizens and AARP (American Association Retired Persons). She received the 1996-1997 Evelyn H. Merrill Award for having served 18 years as a Blood Program volunteer. She was employed for several years at the Brackley's Mill in Strong and later retired from the Franklin County Memorial Hospital in Farmington.

Survivors include her son, Jerry, of Lewisberry, Pa., two daughters, Judith Giffin, of Lewiston, and Joan Tufts, of Kingfield. She was a devoted grandmother of 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her brother, Murray Livingston, of North Anson, and two sisters, Glenice Norton, of Madison, and Alverna Manzer, of Anson.

Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 29, at the Adams Funeral Home, Main Street, Phillips.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 30, at the Strong United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gary Akeley officiating and the Oppalumski Chapter of The Order of The Eastern Star taking part. Spring interment will be held at the Strong Village Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers friends wishing may make contributions to the Strong United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, c/o Harry Tiffany, Strong ME 04983.

Anne K. Paine

FARMINGTON — Anne K. Paine, 101, of Farmington, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at Orchard Park Nursing Care and Rehabilitation Center in Farmington, where she had been a resident for the past 10 years.

She was born Aug. 12, 1899, in Industry, the daughter of Lewis and Sarah (Look) Kennedy, and attended Industry schools.

She worked most of her life in nursing homes in the Auburn area.

On Aug. 12, 2000, Anne received the Boston Gold Post Cane for being the oldest citizen in the town of Farmington.

She enjoyed sewing, knitting, reading and gardening.

Survivors include three sons, Donald W. Paine, of West Farmington, Clifford L. Paine, of Placerville, Calif., and Blanchard K. Paine, of Canton; a daughter, Beverly F. Smith, of San Diego, Calif.; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 29, at Adams Funeral Home, 108 Court St., Farmington. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 15, at the Riverside Cemetery in Farmington.

Friends who wish, may make donations in her memory to the American Cancer Society, Maine Division Inc., 52 Federal St., Brunswick ME 04011.

Helen F. Scott

PORTLAND — Helen F. Scott, 73, of Wilton, died Monday, March 26, 2001, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

She was born Dec. 3, 1927, in Enfield, Conn., a daughter of Frank and Pauline (Hadys) Bonk, and attended Connecticut schools, graduating from Enfield High School in 1945. Upon graduation she was employed by the Connecticut Department of Education and later by the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) in Washington, D.C.

On Aug. 8, 1953, she married Wendell O. Scott in Enfield, Conn. She moved to Maine in 1959 with her husband to raise their family. She later was employed at Forster Manufacturing in Wilton, retiring in 1990 with nearly 25 years of service.

Helen loved to cook and will be remembered for her desserts made from berries that she and her husband enjoyed picking. She looked forward to family gatherings and and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years; three sons, Michael S. Scott and his wife, Kelly, of Wilton, Richard T. Scott, of Boston, Mass., and David J. Scott and his fiancee, Erin Daly, of Burlington, Mass.; two sisters, Amelia Chmiel and her husband, John, of Chicopee, Mass., and Stella Marks and her husband, Robert, of Enfield, Conn.; two granddaughters, Jessie and Bailey Scott, both of Wilton.

She was predeceased by a brother, Matthew Bonk, and three sisters, Jennie Bonk, Gladys Gattey, and Sophie Mack.

Family and friends are invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 30, and from 2 p.m. until the funeral at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 31, at the Wiles Funeral Home, 136 High St., Wilton. Spring interment will be held at the Lakeview Cemetery in Wilton.

Gifts may be given in her memory to the Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice, PO Box 797, Wilton ME 04294; envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Terrence D. Braley

STAFFORD SPRINGS, Conn. — Terrence D. Braley, 52, of Whippoorwill Lane in Stafford Springs and West Hartford, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at his home.

He was born in Hartland, Maine, son of Drusilla (Rines) Braley and the late Leigh Braley.

He was an EMT (emergency medical technician) with the American Medical Response for 10 years in West Hartford, Conn., and was president of GHEMTA Union.

Survivors include his mother, Drusilla (Rines) Braley, of Stafford Springs, Conn.; three sisters, Doreine Clark, of Greenhurst, N.Y., Virginia Pelkey, of Zephyrhills, Fla., Leta Blake, of Pensacola, Fla.; brother, Frederick Braley, of Troy, Maine; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was predeceased by a sister, Carlene A. Bennett, April 28, 1998.

A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday, June 3, at the Second Congregational Church of Stafford at West Stafford, 199 West Stafford Road, Stafford Springs, with the Rev. Joseph Wadsworth officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family at the Grace Lawn Cemetery in Auburn.

There will be no calling hours. Introvigne Funeral Home Inc., 51 East Main St., Stafford Springs, Conn., has care of arrangements.
