Milton E. Dowe

PALERMO — Milton Edwin Dowe, 89, of Palermo, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, in Waterville after a lengthy illness.

He was born in China, Maine, Feb. 19, 1912, the son of Earl Raymond and Margaret (McLean) Dowe. He attended local schools, the Maine School of Commerce in Augusta and Hawley's Electrical Engineering School in Boston.

Milton was employed by Church Electric of Augusta and was self-employed as an electrician for a number of years.

He was one of the organizers of the Palermo Volunteer Fire Department and was fire chief for 18 years. He was an honorary lifetime member.

He and his wife were owners and operators of the Real Maine Country Store in Palermo until their retirement in 1981.

He was a member of the Sheepscot Lake Fish and Game, attended the Branch Mills Union Church and the Palermo Christian Church. He was also a member of the Albion Historical Society, a charter member of the Palermo Historical Society, and a member of the Wiscassett, Waterville and Farmington Railway Museum of Alna.

He was an avid reader, historian and a railroad buff, with over 39 railroad trips taken throughout the United States and Canada. Many days were spent hunting, fishing and canoeing in the northern Maine woods, which he enjoyed.

Over the years he proudly identified and submitted answers to over 125 items in the Bangor Daily News "What is it?" column.

In 1954, he wrote and published "A History of the Town of Palermo", in 1956, "Things That I Remember", and in 1998, a sequel to "Things That I Remember".

Survivors are his wife of 62 years, Virginia (Wescott) Dowe, (they were married April 29, 1939); two daughters, Mrs. Bill (Judy Dowe) Standish of Preston, Conn., and Mrs. Bill (Jan Dowe) Satchell of Northborough, Mass.; a foster sister, Betty Collar of Florida; two grandchildren, Mrs. Bill (Jean Satchell) Roseman and Catherine Satchell; three great-grandchildren, Michael Satchell, and Emily and Anne Roseman; and two nieces, Peggy Coffin and Brenda McLean.

He was predeceased by his sister, Christine Coffin, Aug. 4, 2001, and a grandchild, Laura Satchell.

There will be no calling hours. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at the Branch Mills Union Church. A reception will follow at the Palermo Christian Church. Burial will be private and at the discretion of the family.

Joseph Haggan

JACKMAN — Joseph Haggan, 75, of Jackman, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at Mount St. Joseph Nursing Home in Waterville.

He was born July 14, 1926, in Jackman, son of Leo Joseph and Mary (Cormier) Haggan. He served in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952.

He was employed for 35 years at Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford, Conn. During that time he resided in Lebanon and Willimantic, Conn.

He moved back to Jackman when he retired in 1992. He loved golfing, fishing, music and his dog, Babette.

He was predeceased by his wives, Helen Bodouin, whom he married in 1954, and Betty Hemingway. He was also predeceased by a sister, Sylvia, and a brother, Tom.

Survivors include a son, John and his wife, Sonya, of Ashford, Conn.; two grandchildren, John and Joey; and a stepson, George Hall, of Los Angeles, Calif.; stepdaughter, Shelly and her husband, Paul Niskanan, and their son, Alan, of Scotland, Conn.; two sisters, Christine Hughey and Agnes Paradise, both of Jackman.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church in Jackman. A graveside service will be held at a later date in Willimantic. Arrangements are under the care of the Veilleux Funeral Home, 8 Elm St., Waterville.

Donations may be made to the Jackman Region Health Center, Jackman ME 04945.

Morrone J. Joseph

SOUTH CHINA — Morrone J. Joseph, 90, of Kildeer Point, died Monday, Aug.6, 2001, at his home.

Born in North Vassalboro, May 19, 1911, he was the son of George and Lillian (George) Joseph. Morrone attended Winslow High School and graduated from Bucksport Academy, where he played football.

He married the former Mildred (Odlin) and had lived in South China for several years. For many years, he owned and operated Joseph's Garage on Route 32 in North Vassalboro. He was a skilled mechanic and was known for his generosity. He loved hunting, fishing, and boating, and especially enjoyed spending time at Moosehead Lake. He was fond of the China Lake region and loved to spend time with his family members and had many framed photos of his ancestors and relatives.

Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Mildred (Odlin) Joseph of South China; his sister, Cecilia Belanger of Waterville; his niece, Gail Guthrie of Portland; his nephew, Richard Marr of South Portland and South China; his cousin, Nora Belanger Porter of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and all of their family members and many friends.

By request, no calling hours are planned. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10, at Gray & Pratt Funeral Home, 5391 Windsor Neck Road, Windsor, with the Rev. Ronald Morrell of China Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will follow at Chadwick Hill Cemetery in South China.

If desired, the family suggests memorial gifts to the American Heart Association, Maine Affiliate Inc., c/o Gray & Pratt, PO Box 10, Windsor ME 04363-0010. Contribution envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Mary P. Lord

WATERVILLE — Mary P. Lord, 92, of Waterville, formerly of Shawmut, passed away Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at a Waterville nursing facility.

Mary was born in Lubec, Sept. 3, 1908, the daughter of the late Willard and Edith (McDiarmit) Phinney. She was a graduate of Calais Academy, class of 1926, and also a graduate of Elm City Hospital as a registered nurse where she was affiliated at the Massachusetts Memorial Hospital in Boston and the Bellevue Hospital in New York City.

She was the wife of the late Major Edward B. Lord.

Her sisters, Amy and Marguerite, and brothers, Roy and Royce, predeceased Mary.

Her son, Fred and his wife, Lynn, and three grandchildren, Mark E. Lord and his family, Dr. Christopher E. Lord, and Bryan and his wife survive Mrs. Lord.

At her request, there will be no visiting hours.

There will be a graveside service at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Maplewood Cemetery in Fairfield with the Rev. David Johnston officiating. Arrangements are by Lawry Brothers Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Norma H. Marlett

SOUTH CHINA — Norma Hazel Marlett, 91, of South China, passed away quietly Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at Lakewood Manor in Waterville.

She was born Nov. 18, 1909, in Ashton, S.D., daughter of William H. and Minnie I. (Piercy) Francis. Norma spent her school years in Ashton, graduating from Ashton High School in 1927.

She was the loving wife of Rolland Loren Marlett, whom she married Nov. 20, 1927.

Norma was the loving mother of Paul Marlett, Lois Steury, Janet Schaefer and Gregory Marlett.

She and Rolland lived in Aberdeen, S.D., Washington, D.C., Madison, Wis., and Beloit, Wis. Norma lived in Madison and Monona, Wis., prior to moving to South China in 1987.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1955, and son, Paul, in 1972.

Survivors include her children, Lois, Janet and Gregory, as well as her grandchildren, Craig Steury, Tom Steury, Susan Dukart, Julie Reynolds, Ken Steury, Kathy Morteza, Debbie Marlett, Bill Marlett, Kelly Marlett, Diane Schaefer-Shuldman, Nancy van Elteran, John B. Schaefer, David J. Schaefer, Mark Marlett, Caroline Marlett, David A. Marlett, and many great-grandchildren.

Norma was an avid reader and enjoyed her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren very much. She had a kind heart and loved animals.

Burial will be at the Roselawn Cemetery in Madison, Wis. A family memorial will be held at a later date. Gifts of remembrance can be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are by Gray & Pratt Funeral Home in Windsor.

George W. Soule

GARDINER — George W. Soule, 68, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at the Eastside Rehabilitation and Living Center in Bangor.

He was born in Hartland, May 29, 1933, the son of Guy W. Soule and Eva M. (Wheeler) Soule.

He worked for 25 years at Stowell & McGregor in Dixfield and at Carlton Woolen Mill in Gardiner until his retirement.

He is survived by his mother, Eva Coburn, of Farmington; two brothers, Ervin Soule and his wife, Evon, of Mexico, and Clifton Soule of Florida; a stepson, Donald Roberts and his wife, Brenda, of Barnstable, Mass.; two nieces, Amy Soule of Portland and Annette Sprague of Jefferson; one aunt, Elizabeth Perry of Waterville; and one uncle, Herbert Wheeler of Winslow; his beloved dog, Oscar, and good friend, Millie.

He was predeceased by his wife, Lorraine; his father, Guy W. Soule; and his brother, Linwood.

There will be no visiting hours. A private service for family and close friends will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at Gracelawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George's name to the Eastside Rehabilitation and Living Center, 516 Mount Hope Ave., Bangor 04401.

John M. Spaulding

BIDDEFORD — John M. Spaulding, 79, of Hill Street, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

He is survived by his wife,Rheta Demers Spaulding of Biddeford; one daughter,Kathryn Daniel of Andover, Mass.; two sons,Douglas Spaulding of Springvale andJohn Spaulding Jr. of London, England; one brother,Howard Spaulding of Madison; two sisters,Hester Paige of Caratunk andBeverly Stuart of Scarborough; four grandchildren.

There will be no visiting hours; services will be private. Arrangements are by Hope Memorial Chapel, 480 Elm Street, Biddeford.

Floyd S. White

NORTH VASSALBORO —Floyd Sherman (Ikey) White, 71, of North Vassalboro, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, after a short illness at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Facility in Augusta.

Ikey as born Feb. 26, 1930, in North Vassalboro, son of Carroll and Hazel (Sherman) White. He married the former Theresa Landry, July 3, 1948, in China.

Ikey was retired after having worked for Morneau Sawmill for 36 years and at Masse Lumber for 10 years.

He enjoyed cutting wood, scrapping metals, mowing his lawn and visiting his friends and family.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Harlan and Howard, and by two sisters, Louise Crosby and Pauline Taber.

Survivors include his wife, Theresa A. White, of North Vassalboro; his children and their spouses, Nancy and Nelson Adams, Douglas and Pat White, Harlan and Anne White, and Glen and Cathy Fisher; his brothers, Donald White, Abbott White and Bennie White, all of North Vassalboro, and Richard White and Stanley White, of Connecticut; his sisters, Clara White and Barbara Letourneau, of Connecticut, and Hazel Choate of Liberty.

He leaves behind five granddaughters, Rachel and her husband, Chad Roy, Marcy and Abby White, Karyn and Katrina Adams, and his great-grandson, Corey Roy; many many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10, at the Redington Funeral Home, 5 Park St., Waterville.

A graveside funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at the Village Cemetery, Cemetery Road, North Vassalboro.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Vassalboro United Methodist Church, c/o Sandy Toohey, Treasurer, PO Box 87, East Vassalboro ME 04935; or the American Diabetes Association, Maine-Memorial Processing Center, PO Box 31160, Hartford CT 06150-1160.
