Leona L. Abbott

CANAAN — Leona L. Abbott, 33, of Canaan, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

She was born Jan. 3, 1968, in Skowhegan, daughter of Ronald Mathieu and Deborah Spencer, and graduated from Skowhegan Area High School, class of 1986.

She married Albert J. Abbott, March 17, 1990, in Skowhegan.

She was employed by Solon Manufacturing in Skowhegan as a quality controller.

She enjoyed riding horses and loved animals. She loved spending time with the family and just plain old having fun.

Survivors include her husband, Albert of Canaan; mother, Debbie Spencer of Skowhegan, and father, Ronnie Mathieu and his wife, Corinne, of Canaan; sister, Denise Lang and her husband, Brad; stepsister, Shelley Corson and her husband, Michael, of Madison; stepbrother, Ryan Worster of Fairfield; three brothers-in-law, Sonny Abbott and his wife, Lona, of Cornville, Wayne Abbott and his wife, Kathy, of Waterville, Eric Abbott and his wife, Brenda, of Canaan; one sister-in-law, Naomi Collins and her husband, Mike, of Canaan; maternal grandfather, Robert Spencer of Canaan; two nieces, Ticy and Telena Lang, and a nephew, Tyler Mathieu, all of Skowhegan; two special friends, Pat Higgins and Natasha Towle; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by maternal grandmother, Hazel Spencer, and paternal grandparents, Raymond and Helen Mathieu.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at the Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 261 Madison Ave., Skowhegan. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Fairview Cemetery in Canaan with the Rev. Mark Tanner officiating.

Georgia M. Fuller

BRUNSWICK — Georgia M. Fuller, 90, of Brunswick, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, in California.

She was born July 12, 1911, in Harmony. She graduated from Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield, class of 1930, and Waltham Training School for Nurses in 1933.

During her career, Ms. Fuller was employed as a school nurse at Wheelock College in Boston, Boston State College in Boston, and also in hospital settings.

Ms. Fuller retired in 1979 to Brunswick, where she engaged in volunteer work through different organizations and was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Her niece, Linda Fuller-Saxton of Placerville, Calif., and her nephew, Frank Fuller of West Chester, Ohio, survive her.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Village Cemetery, 144 Peltoma Ave., Pittsfield ME 04967. Remembrances can be made to the United Methodist Church, 320 Church Road, Brunswick ME 04011.

Alfred R. Markham

SMITHFIELD — Alfred R. Markham, 87, of Smithfield, died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where his wife and children had been constantly at his side.

He was born in Smithfield, Feb. 8, 1914, the son of Enoch Arden and Lillian (Walker) Markham. He attended local schools, graduating from Norridgewock High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having taken part in the invasion of Normandy.

Alfred was a master electrician and general contractor, having built many churches, homes and schools in Florida. He lived in Florida for more than 40 years, retiring to his Maine home in Smithfield.

A beloved husband, father and mentor, he was a life time hunter and fisherman. He was an avid gardener, growing beautiful flower gardens around his home where he and his wife enjoyed watching the birds and other animals.

Alfred was predeceased by a daughter, Lillian Velma Hopkins; a sister, Margaret Morash; three brothers, Arden, William and Ralph Markham.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley (Stevens) Markham; a son, George Markham, of Smithfield; two daughters, Regina Markham Ward and Wendy K. Hamlin, both of Mayo, Fla.; sister, Kathleen Habberley, of Suffolk, England; five grandchildren, Leland R. Ward Jr., James Alfred Ward, Joycelyn Ciapetta, Steven Arden Markham and Amber Virginia Ducksworth; three great-grandchildren, Phillip Ciapetta, Mika Cheyenne Ward and Robin Virginia Ducksworth.

A committal service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, at the Gould Cemetery in Smithfield. Arrangements are by Wheeler Funeral Home of Oakland.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Pine Tree Camp, 114 Pine Tree Camp Road, Rome ME 04963.

Carol Lee Pomelow

ANSON — Carol Lee Pomelow, 49, of Anson, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Waterville. She had fought a long and rough four year battle with cancer.

She was born Jan. 1, 1952, in Skowhegan, daughter of the late Ernest McCarthy, who passed away in 1982, and Verna McCarthy.

Survivors include one son, Robert Pomelow of Waterville, one daughter, Dawn Pomelow of Madison, one grandson, Christian Newton of Madison; grandmother, Adelia McCarthy of Madison, mother, Verna McCarthy of Madison, sister, Debbie Venneman and her husband, Herman, of Madison; two brothers, Phil McCarthy and Alan McCarthy of East Madison; many aunts, uncles, nieces, and three very close friends, Jo Ann Patchell, Frances Bean, and Frank Pomelow.

She will be sadly missed by everyone who knew her.

Upon her request, there will be no services.

Glenys B. Sprague

PITTSFIELD — Glenys B. Sprague, 78, of Pittsfield, died Monday evening, Oct. 15, 2001, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Waterville following a brief illness.

Glenys was born Feb. 26, 1923, in Burnham, daughter of Grover U. and Luie (Wood) Braley. She graduated from Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield, class of 1942, and Thomas College of Waterville.

On May 25, 1945, she married John R. Sprague Jr. in Pittsfield; he died Aug. 10, 1979.

Most recently, Glenys was employed as a clerical and payroll clerk by the Cianbro Co. of Pittsfield from 1967 until her retirement in 1983. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Pittsfield.

Glenys was predeceased by her brother, Glyndon B. Braley Sr., and sister, Velma L. Braley.

Survivors include her son, John G. Sprague of Pittsfield, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

At Glenys' request, there will be no visiting hours or funeral. A private graveside service will be held at the Village Cemetery in Pittsfield. Arrangements are under the care of the D.H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 2208, Augusta ME 04330.

Andre M. Boutin

CHINA — Andre M. Boutin, 60, of China, passed away Tuesday evening, Feb. 5, 2002, at a Waterville hospital with his wife and son by his side.

He was born Aug. 16, 1941, in Lac Megantic, Quebec, Canada, son of Raoul and Jeannette (Poisson) Boutin. He served in the Army National Guard and was honorably discharged as a private. He married Thelma L. Merrow, Dec. 26, 1964.

Andre was employed as a Quality Control Manager by the Scott Paper Co. in Winslow for 33 years before retiring.

He was a member of the China Lake Association and had served as treasurer for 14 years. In the early 1990s he opened an antique clock repair business known as A.B. Clock. He was known as the "clock doctor" to many people. He was a member of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors No. 115540 and the American Watch Institution No. 23205, Chapter 89, where he also served as treasurer for three years.

In his leisure time his passions where fishing, duck carving, and loved spending time with his grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his father and a brother, Pierre Boutin.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Thelma L. (Merrow) Boutin of China; his children, Marc Boutin of Melrose, Mass., Michelle Boutin of Alexandria, Va., and Melina Soper and her husband, Robert, of Kensington, N.H.; his mother, Jeannette Boutin of Sarasota, Fla.; three brothers, Francois Boutin of Waltham, Mass., Roger Boutin of Auburn, and Steve Boutin of Sarasota, Fla.; two sisters, Paige Lester and her husband, John, of Sarasota, Fla., and Suzanne Thorburn and her husband, Ray, of Sarasota, Fla.; three grandchildren, Brandon, Patrick, and Abigail; nieces, nephews and cousins.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at the China Baptist Church in China with the Rev. Ronald Morrell officiating. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Oncology Department, Thayer Unit, MaineGeneral Medical Center, 149 North St., Waterville ME 04901. Arrangements are by Lawry Brothers Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Paul Brinkman, M.D., F.A.C.S.

FARMINGTON — Dr. Paul Brinkman, 69, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Fla.

He was born June 17, 1932, in Resht, Persia, the son of medical missionaries, Dr. Harry and Adrianna V.L. Brinkman. His family lived in Persia, Michigan and Wilton, Maine, moving to Farmington in the early 1940s. Paul was a graduate of Farmington High School, where he was an outstanding athlete in basketball, football and track.

In 1954 he graduated from Bowdoin College and entered Tufts University School of Medicine. Following his graduation in 1958, he served his internship and surgical residency at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

In 1963, Dr. Brinkman opened his surgical practice in Farmington and was a member of the active staff at Franklin Memorial Hospital. In October 1986, Operating Room No. 1 at FMH was designated the Paul Brinkman, M.D., operating suite in recognition of his many years of dedicated service to the hospital.

The Franklin Community Health Network recently honored Dr. Brinkman, his wife, Joan, and their daughter, Jan, with the Community Health Leadership Award for health care service spanning three generations. Dr. Brinkman taught the first EMT course recognized by the state specifically for ambulance care providers.

For many years, he was the school physician for MSAD 9 and was affectionately known as "Dr. Paul". In the 1970s Dr. Brinkman and his twin brother, Dr. Carl Brinkman, were inducted as Fellows in the American College of Surgeons. Attending the induction ceremony in Chicago was their father. Dr. Harry Brinkman, also a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons.

During his professional career he was a member of the Maine Medical Association. Following the loss of sight in one eye he retired from active practice in 1982. He then served as the Chief Medical Consultant for Disability Services in the Department of Human Services in Augusta, retiring from that position in 1995.

For most of his professional life, Dr. Brinkman served as a State of Maine Medical Examiner. In 2000, he was presented the Merrill F. Greene Award as Outstanding Medical Examiner of the Year. He was a past president of the Maine Division of the American Cancer Society and along with his wife, Joan, was recognized for outstanding volunteer service with the presentation of the prestigious American Cancer Society's Division Award. He was a member of the planning committee that initiated the annual Living with Cancer Day, offering support, education and comfort for patients and their families.

For several years, Dr. Brinkman was on the faculty at the University of Maine at Farmington as an adjunct professor in the Health Education Department. In the 1990s the Health Education Building on campus was named the Brinkman House in recognition of the contributions of the family to UMF.

He had a lifelong interest in Civil War Medicine and enjoyed giving educational presentations to school and civic groups. Dressed for the part, he emphasized his presentations with historical anecdotes and demonstrated field surgery procedures using a collection of Civil War era medical instruments. He was an honorary member of the Joshua Chamberlain Society.

Dr. Brinkman was an ardent supporter of the members of area fire departments and shared his medical expertise in the development of educational programs for them. The Farmington Fire Department named him an honorary member of their department. Dr. Brinkman's community involvement also included serving on the Board of Trustees of the Pierce House in Farmington, the UMF Gold Leaf Program, and in the Volunteer Program in MSAD 9.

As well as spending time with his family, he enjoyed camping, fly fishing and watercolor painting.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Joan; his four children, Michael and Sharon Brinkman and their children, Hilary and Paul of Camarillo, Calif., and Nancy and Erik Steele, D.O., and their children, Brianne and Alexa of Bangor; Chris and Deborah Brinkman and their children, Adrianna and Craig, of Farmington, and Jan Brinkman of Farmington; his twin brother, Dr. Carl Brinkman of Sun City, Hilton Head, S.C.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dr. Paul Brinkman Memorial Fund, c/o Peoples Heritage Bank, PO Box 900, Farmington ME 04938. A Paul Brinkman, M.D., Scholarship Fund for health professions will be established at FMH as well as a fund for educational programs for the Franklin County Fireman's Association.

A memorial service will be held at Old South Church, United Church of Christ, Main Street, Farmington, at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, and from 4 to 6 p.m. there will be a time for visiting with the family. Arrangements are under the direction of Dan & Scott Adams Cremation & Funeral Service, 488 Farmington Falls Road, Farmington ME 04938; (778-5555).

Maurice O. Eaton

STRONG — Maurice O. Eaton, 69, of Strong, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at his home in Strong following a long illness.

He was born Nov. 22, 1932, in Sandy Hook, Conn., the son of Joseph and Myra (Dobier) Eaton, and attended schools of Connecticut. In his early years he worked as a tree topper in Connecticut and later moved to Salem, Maine, where he worked for Cat Lumber Co. for many years, then he moved back to Connecticut to retire and then later moving back to Strong. He loved fishing, hunting, camping and was very artistic.

He is survived by six daughters, Kimberly Eaton of Strong; Delrobin Eaton of Bridgeport, Conn., Joyce Roberts of Ellington, Conn., Danna Parker of Newport Richie, Fla., Christine Gloor of Williams Town, Vt., Cathy Harrington of Williamstown; a brother, Richard Eaton of Kingfield; sister and brother-in-law, Nelda and Bill Buchannon of New York; 13 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

At the request of the family there will be no visitation hours. A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Dan & Scott Adams Cremation & Funeral Service, 488 Farmington Falls Road, Farmington; (778-5555). Friends wishing may make donations in his memory to the American Cancer Society, Maine Division Inc., 52 Federal St., Brunswick ME 04011.

Arthur L. Burnham Sr.

1922-2002

PALMYRA — Arthur L. Burnham Sr., 80, passed away Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at a Pittsfield hospital.

He was born March 31, 1922, in St. Albans, son of Miron and Caroline (Tyler) Burnham.

He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 32 in Pittsfield for 36 years and was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Pittsfield and the 40/8 in Waterville.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Geraldine (Richardson) Burnham of Palmyra, and his friend, the dog, Roscoe; two daughters, Candace Shlitter and Patricia Neil; three sons, Bruce Washburn, Jai Kybler and Arthur Burnham Jr.; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, and a brother, George Burnham.

Private calling hours will be held at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home in Newport. Burial will be in the Maine Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Belgrade. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent in his memory to the American Legion Post No. 32, c/o Ed Paradis, PO Box 151, Pittsfield ME 04967.
