Beverly A. Niles Elliott

1932-2002

CANAAN — Beverly Alice Niles Elliott, 69, of Canaan, died April 2, 2002, following a not-long-enough life.

She was a daughter to Harry and Hazel-Pearl Niles; wife to Clyde Lament Elliott Sr.; sister to Una Roberta Seamens and Brenda Jo Thompson; mother to Clyde "Butch" Elliott Jr., Donna "Dee" Elliott Thayer and Una Roberta Whalen; mother-in-law to Betty Jean Elliott, Raymond Thayer and Randy Scott Whalen; grandmother to Danielle, Amy, Doody, Jamie, Debbie, Destiny, Ashley-Hazel and Benjamin; Nana to John Tyler Clyde Blodgett, Corrine Elizabeth York and Tayler Elaine Crocker; and a friend to all who knew her.

Beverly was born in Madison and attended Madison schools and churches.

She married her Clyde in 1958. They lived most of their married life in Canaan. Her husband died in 1991, leaving Beverly to be loved and entertained by her large family, many friends, and her books.

Beverly was a former president and secretary of the Harrison D. Barrett Church of Etna. She also worked for the Norrwock Shoe Co. and the Irving Tanning Co.

A memorial service will be held at the Church of The Nazarene on Leavitt Street in Skowhegan at 1 p.m. Friday, April 5. A celebration of her life and reunion with her Clyde will take place at the home of Una and Randy Whalen, 34 North Ave., following the service.

Beverly believed that flowers are proof of God's existence and everlasting love. And because one can never have too much love and therefore, too many flowers...Flowers will be happily accepted. Send or present them to the family at 34 North Ave. in Skowhegan.

Robert Francisco Estes Sr.

1913-2002

RANGELEY — Robert Francisco Estes Sr., 89, of Rangeley, passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at his daughter's home in Oakland.

He was born the third son of Bay Edward Estes Sr. and Mellie Grover (Timberlake) Estes on March 31, 1913, in Melrose, Mass. He attended Deering High School in Portland, where he was an outstanding track and football athlete. He went on to Colby College, where he was a member of ATO fraternity, participated in football and track, and graduated in 1935.

He married Estelle Thomas Pray, July 18, 1936; they spent 53 wonderful years together before her death in 1989.

He first worked for Southern Advanced Bag & Paper Co. in Hodge, La. He later worked at the Portsmouth Navy Yard, and later as a self-employed wood cutter in Rangeley. He went on to be employed by Great Northern Paper Co., first surveying their woodlands; he surveyed the land that was later given to establish the Sugarloaf Ski Area. He later became a Superintendent of Woodlands management. While working for them, he was responsible for many innovations, such as the first wood grapple, a fixed derrick to build boomlog piers in the Kennebec River, set up and ran an experimental woods camp in the Pierce Pond Area, where he played an important role in fighting the forest fire of 1952. After the Madison Mill was sold, he traveled the state purchasing heavy equipment for the company. After a brief retirement, he worked for R.C. Hazelton, as an equipment salesman.

He was honored by the Rangeley Lakes Region Logging Museum, being inducted in the Logging Hall of Fame. He and his late wife Estelle enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time at their camp at Pierce Pond. They both loved the great outdoors. After returning to Maine, they spent many years in Anson, where they raised their four children. They later retired to Rangeley.

In addition to his parents, and wife, Robert is predeceased by his brothers, Bay Edward Estes Jr., Richard Fremont Estes, and Donald Timberlake Estes.

He is survived by his children, Robert F. Estes Jr. and his wife, Jeanette, Elizabeth Estes Zimba and her husband, L. John, Elaine Estes Sandoval and her husband, Antonio, and Stephen F. Estes and his wife, Cindy; his grandchildren, Deborah Estes, Kim Clements and her husband, William, Derek and his wife, Lisa, Dana Estes and his wife, Betty, Roberta Martin Hoedebecke and her husband, Roch, David F. Martin and his wife, Angela, Theresa Thomas Winter and her husband, Robert, Brian Estes and Jason Estes; four great-grandchildren; a special friend, Ada Berry, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held in August at Rangeley. Arrangements are under the care of Cremation Services of Maine, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast.

Edward B. Killam

1934-2002

HARTLAND — Edward B. Killam, 67, of Hartland, died late Tuesday night at Birch Grove Nursing Home in Pittsfield after a long illness.

He was born June 12, 1934, in Pittsfield, son of Fred and Annie (Morrison) Killam and attended Pittsfield schools.

After serving in the U.S. Army, he lived in Colorado for many years. After moving back to Maine, he worked at Irving Tanning Co. in Hartland until his retirement in 1996.

Survivors include two brothers, Willard of St. Albans and Freddie of Illinois; and one sister, Pearl Colford of Livermore; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins, and a very special friend, Richard Mills of Hartland.

Burial will be at the Pittsfield Village Cemetery later this spring. In lieu of flowers, donations in Edward's memory to the Birch Grove Nursing Home would be welcome.

Marlene L. Lagrange

1935-2002

WATERVILLE — Marlene L. Lagrange, 66, passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at a Waterville hospital after a long illness.

Marlene was born April 29, 1935, in Waterville, the daughter of Arnold and Onia Marden and graduated from Waterville High School.

In September of 1959, she married Robert J. Lagrange. She was employed at C.F. Hathaway Co. and Keyes Fibre Co. in Waterville.

Marlene may have been best known as the owner/operator of Barney's Hotdogs in Waterville. She truly enjoyed working at Barney's and getting to know her customers, many of whom became her friends.

Survivors include her husband, Robert; son, Michael and his wife, Mary, of Waterville; son, David and his wife, Lisa, of Belgrade; daughter, Julie Hoffman and her husband, Geoffrey, and their children, Kyle, Aaron and Emma of Hanover, Mass.; son, James and his wife, Teresa, and their daughter, Grace, of Cape Elizabeth; a sister, Joan LeFebvre of Warwick, R.I.; a brother, James Marden and his wife, Doris, of Oakland; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, April 5, at Sacred Heart Church, Pleasant Street, Waterville. Burial will be held later at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery in Waterville. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 44 Binney St., Boston MA 02115.

The Most Reverend Edward C. O'Leary

1920-2002

PORTLAND — The Most Reverend Edward C. O'Leary, has died, Bishop Emeritus of Portland, the Most Reverend Edward Cornelius O'Leary, D.D., passed away at St. Joseph's Manor in Portland at approximately 9:30 last night. The 81-year-old Bishop had been a resident there since July 2000 and since then had suffered a number of strokes and his general health had been deteriorating.

Bishop O'Leary was born Aug. 21, 1920, in Bangor, and was ordained in 1946 after studying at Holy Cross College in Worcester, Mass., and St. Paul Seminary in Ottawa, Canada. His assignments included assistant pastor and pastor positions in Portland, Old Orchard Beach and Brunswick. From 1952 to 1965 he served as Chancellor of the Diocese of Portland. He was ordained as Auxiliary Bishop of Portland, January of 1971, and Titular Bishop of Moglaena.

He was installed as the ninth Bishop of Portland in December of 1974, succeeding Bishop Peter L. Gerety. During his tenure as Bishop of Portland, he established St. Edmund Parish in Westbrook in 1975 and St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish in Scarborough in 1988; the Diocese became a member of the Maine Council of Churches which has continued to the present day; and the Diocese sponsored several low income elderly housing projects including Deering Pavilion in Portland and Seton Village in Waterville as well as St. Joseph Manor, a long-term nursing facility in Portland. In 1987 he appointed Sr. Rita-Mae Bissonnette as Vice Chancellor of the Diocese, one of the first women in the country to hold this position.

He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Eileen Scribner of Old Orchard Beach and Mrs. Alice Daily of Belmont, Mass., and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements will be announced soon.

Kathryn C. Abbott

1914-2002

AUBURN — Kathryn C. Abbott, 88, of Stetson Road and formerly of Waterville, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at the Schooner Estates of Auburn.

Kathryn was born in East Orange, N.J., June 2, 1914, the daughter of Charlotte (Temme) and W. Benson Caswell. She graduated from Colby College of Waterville and Katherine Gibbs School.

She married Carroll Abbott in 1941 until his passing in 1976. Kathryn remarried in 1982 to John MacDonald until his passing in 1997.

Kathryn was a member of the First Congregational Church, the Samaritan Department of the Waterville Woman's Club, the Women's Auxiliary of Mid Maine Medical Center, and past longtime member of the Waterville Country Club.

She was an avid gardener and enjoyed needle point.

She is survived by her son, Charles Abbott of Aspen, Colo., daughter, Linda Abbott of Lewiston; three stepchildren, William MacDonald of York, Scott MacDonald of Ogunquit, and Marcia MacDonald of Buxton; step-grandchildren, Kaya and Desmond Jr. of Buxton; two nephews and nieces.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date. In Kathryn's memory donations may be made to American Lung Association, 122 State St., Augusta ME 04330; or the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society, 420 Poland Spring Road, Auburn ME 04210. Arrangements are under the care of Kincer Funeral Home of Richmond.

Virgil W. LaBree

1937-2002

WINDSOR — Virgil W. LaBree, 64, of Route 17, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at the Veterans Administration Center at Togus after a long illness.

He was born in Kezar Falls, Sept. 10, 1937, the son of Frederick W. LaBree and Flora Mae (Day) LaBree. Virgil graduated from South Portland High School in 1956 and later attended the University of Maine at Augusta.

Virgil served in the Maine National Guard, the U.S. Navy for four years and the U.S. Army for 17 years. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1977 as a Sergeant First Class. Among his awards was the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/ Palm, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.

He was employed by the Veterans Administration at Togus for eight years. He was previously employed by Maine Veterans Home for two years. He had also owned and operated This & That Tiny Greenhouse Boutique for two years.

He was a member of Peoples Methodist Church of South Portland, Maine Greenhouse Association, a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and a former Boy Scout leader for 15 years with various troops. Virgil was an Emergency Medical Technician, an EMTA and an EMT state examiner. He was also a diehard Patriots fan!

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Jean M. (Doucette) LaBree of Windsor; one son, Theodore W. LaBree and his wife, Claudia, of East Vassalboro; one daughter, Deborah J. Foss of Windsor; one brother, Lt. Col. (Ret.) Ivan LaBree and his wife, Mona, of Augusta; four sisters, Lorraine Rossnagle and Freda Avery, both of Cape Elizabeth, Evangeline Franceschelli and her husband, John, of Dunmore, Pa., and Verna Repass and her husband, Robert, of South Carolina; four granddaughters; numerous nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 7, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, where a funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 8. Committal prayers will be offered at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, in the chapel of Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.

Lorraine M. Lessard

1936-2002

CANAAN — Lorraine M. Lessard, 66, died at her residence after a long illness Wednesday, June 5, 2002.

She was born in Waterville, March 28, 1936, the daughter of Richard H. and Irene (Pooler) King. Lorraine was a Waterville High School graduate.

She had worked at C.F. Hathaway Shirt Co. for 45 years. She was a very caring person and was loved by all.

She is survived by a daughter, Vonda Lessard of Portland; a son, Todd Lessard and his wife, Angela, of Old Orchard Beach; two sisters, Joyce Hachey of Winslow and Nancy Smith of Clinton; her best friend, Terry Johnston of Waterville; special cousin, Joan Kane of Winslow; and by many friends at C.F. Hathaway Shirt Co. in Waterville; and by many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Beverly Gagne and her parents.

There will be no public visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 8, at St. John the Baptist Church, 47 Monument St., Winslow, with the Rev. Paul Plante officiating. Committal prayers and burial will follow in St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, Grove Street, Waterville. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in her memory may be made to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 44 Binney St., Boston MA 02115; or to the Sacred Heart Soup Kitchen, 70 Pleasant St., Waterville ME 04901. Arrangements are with Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm St., Waterville.
