Leona Mae Dennett Smith

1904-2003

AUGUSTA — Leona Mae Dennett Smith, 98, of Augusta, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at the Augusta Rehabilitation Center following a long illness. She was born in Scarborough, March 24, 1904, the daughter of Leon and Emelyn (Milliken) Dennett.

Leona was a very active member of the community. She loved serving and helping many organizations, including the Kennebec Valley Garden Club, the Republican Women's Club, the Augusta Women's club, the Order of Rebekahs and the Green Street United Methodist Church. During World War II, she was active in the Red Cross and received their medal for excellence.

Leona was a familiar sight on her porch at 28 Davenport St. where she was often called the "Mayor of Davenport Street." She was famous for knitting mittens, scarves, sweaters and caps for the children in the neighborhood and for the church. Her porch was a gathering place for children and they loved sharing their lives, dolls, plays and dances with her. Her cooking featured cookies and her famous "burned carrots."

She was predeceased by her husband, Carroll Smith; her son, Robert L. Smith; her sister, Marguerite Quimby, and her brothers, Carl, Don, Norman, Gordon and Roland Dennett.

Survivors include her daughter, Jean Bache-Wiig and husband John; her brother, Stanley Dennett; her grandchildren, Robert L. Smith Jr. and wife Ruth, Sharon Carter and husband Roger, Mark Smith and wife Diane, Terry Smith, Eric Bache-Wiig, Carol Bache-Wiig, Joseph Cloutier, Robert Cloutier, Debby Cloutier and Sherrill Cloutier; her great-grandchildren, Matthew and Jeffrey Carter, Christopher and Nicole Smith, Thomas Smith and Cheranne Bennett.

There will be no visiting hours. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, at Green Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jan Davis officiating. Spring burial will be at the Coombs Mills Cemetery in Augusta.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Green Street United Methodist Church Building Fund, 13 Green St., Augusta ME 04330.

Margaret V. York

1928-2003

ATHENS — Margaret V. York, 74, of Athens, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at Maplecrest Rehabilitation and Living Center in Madison. She was born June 23, 1928, in Athens, daughter of Hiram and Elvira (Corson) Tuttle, and attended Athens schools.

She married Leeman York, May 5, 1979, in Athens; he died July 15, 1985.

Margaret worked for Norrwock Shoe Co. in Skowhegan and for a short time at New Balance Shoe Manufacturers in Norridgewock for a total of 29 years.

She was a member of the Athens Victory Club; she enjoyed reading, walking, word search books and talking on the phone.

Survivors include two sons, Ralph Tuttle and Brian Tuttle, both of Athens; stepson, Larry York of Ohio; three step grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a special "thank you" to Faye Chandler and Stacy Kelley, both of Athens.

A spring graveside service will be held. Arrangements are by Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan.

Marjorie Bither Smith

1914-2003

BOOTHBAY HARBOR —Marjorie Bither Smith, a resident of St. Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor died Saturday, April 5, 2003. She was born in 1914 in Lexington, Mass., the daughter of J. Henry and Mary Duffy. She graduated from Bouve College (now part of Northeastern University) with a bachelor's degree and received her master's degree from Columbia University. Marjorie served in the Department of Physical Education and Athletics at Colby College for over 25 years retiring as professor of physical education and director of both men's and women's physical education programs.

She held strong beliefs that school systems should emphasize individual sports which students could pursue for a lifetime of physical fitness.

Marjorie was one of the first women to hold the top administrative post in physical education for both men and women at a major college. She was a leader in advocating equality in sports for women, helping to found the Maine Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women and serving as the organizations first president. During her tenure the number of women's sports at Colby increased from one (skiing) to 13. She coached a number of women's sports teams, including the tennis team, which won many state championships under her watch.

In 1979 Marjorie received the Colby Brick, Colby's highest award, and was C Club Person of the Year in 1984. Upon her retirement, Colby established the Marjorie Bither Award presented annually to the Colby athlete who exhibits outstanding academic ability, athletic ability and leadership in athletics on campus.

She contributed much to her community serving as co-chair of the Waterville Maine Community Concert Series, leader of the Girl Scouts, board member of the Good Will-Hinckley School, deacon of the First Congregational Church and as a volunteer at local hospitals, schools and American Association of University Women activities. Since moving to Boothbay Harbor in 2000, Marjorie continued her active life joining the Congregational Church, organizing the book club at St. Andrews Village and enjoying the activities of the Coastal Club.

Her husband, Philip Bither, a professor at Colby for over 42 years, predeceased her in 1995. In 1996 she married Dudley Smith, who died in 2000.

Survived by two sons, Stewart and his wife Nancy of East Boothbay, and Richard and his wife Denise of Commerce (Twp), Mich.; grandchildren, Christopher Bither of New York City and Andrea Malboeuf of Vail, Colo., Maria and Nicholas, both of Commerce (Twp); a brother, Wallace Duffy and his wife, Mary of Apopka, Fla.; a niece, Cathy Duffy of Farmington, and a nephew, John Duffy of Temple. She was welcomed into the Smith family and is survived by three stepdaughters, Linda Ames of South China, Diane Drinkwater of Belfast, Karen Pipe of Fryeburg, and a large extended family.

A service to remember Marjorie will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 10. at the Congregational Church, 125 Townsend Ave. (Rt. 27), Boothbay Harbor. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Colby College to the Philip and Marjorie Bither Fund, College Relations Office of Colby College, 4350 Mayflower Hill, Waterville ME 04901. Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home of Boothbay.

Dana E. Soule

1920-2003

WINSLOW — Dana E. Soule, 82, of Winslow died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta. He was born Dec. 29, 1920, in Waterville, the son of the late Millard and Esther (Williams) Soule.

He attended Good Will-Hinckley School from March of 1933 to graduation in June 1940. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Parachute Troops in December 1941. He was an instructor at Fort Bennings, Ga., for one and a half years. Then he went overseas and spent time in the South Pacific. He was discharged in 1946.

He married Veronica "Ronni" Gondela in April of 1947 and had four children.

He was a very well-known baseball pitcher and later became a popular baseball empire in this area. Sports meant a lot to him and baseball in particular. He was a member of MacCrillis-Rousseau Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Bourque-Lanigan Post No. 5 American Legion.

He is survived by his wife Veronica J. Soule of Winslow; son, John and wife Anne Soule of Waterville; daughter, Peggy LaVerdiere and husband Steve of Belgrade; son, David Soule and wife Mary of Winslow; son, Stephen Soule of Waterville; four grandchildren, Mike, Karen, Jessica and Kristen; and by several nephews and nieces. He will be sadly missed by all of his family.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Redington, Wilbur and Clifton, and by a sister, Helen McLaughlin.

No services will be held in respect to his wishes. He will be cremated as he requested and burial will be at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery in Waterville at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Parkinson's Foundation. Arrangements are with the Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm St., Waterville.

Arlene Mae (Brush) Trull

1912-2003

UNITY — Arlene Mae (Brush) Trull, 90, of Unity, passed away Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at her home in Unity. She was born in Lynn, Mass., April 29, 1912, a daughter of William E. and Lovina (Cook) Trull.

She married Lawrence D. Trull, Feb. 13, 1932. He passed away on June 13, 1986. On Christmas Eve of 1942, she and her husband packed and gathered all of their belongings, including their three children, and moved from Massachusetts to Unity, Maine, in their 1932 Ford truck. Later, they became self-employed dairy farmers. They operated their dairy farm in Unity until 1976.

Arlene also worked the hot lunch program for the Unity elementary and high school. She enjoyed crocheting, especially hats and mittens for her grandchildren.

She belonged to the Rebekahs, was a member for many years for the Harvest Moon Grange in Thorndike and the Pomona Grange, as well as the Maine State Grange.

She was predeceased by her husband; a brother, William Brush; a sister, Grace Ames; and a son-in-law, Jack Sanders.

Survivors include her children, Leverne R. Sanders, LeRoy D. Trull, and Beverly Mae Trull, all of Unity; her grandchildren, Michel Sanders of St. Paul, Minn., Noralene Michaud of Orlando, Fla., Larry Sanders of Springfield, Ohio, Tracy Sanders of Poland Springs, Tammie Rossi of Lewiston, Tina Harper of South West Harbor, Torrie Sprague of Northport, and Todd A. Trull of Unity; 14 great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 11, at the Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, Main and Depot streets, Unity, where a funeral service will be held at noon, Saturday, April 12, with the Rev. Rick Boyden officiating. Spring burial will be at Quaker Hill Cemetery in Unity. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Kno-Wal-Lin, 147 Waldo Ave., Unity ME 04988.

Constance Plourde-Carlton

1958-2003

ADA, Mich. — Constance Plourde-Carlton, 44, died on May 26, 2003, after losing a difficult but spirited struggle with cancer.

Connie was born on Aug. 29, 1958, in East Hartford, Conn. She was the second child of the late Valere and Lucy (Browning) Plourde. Connie will be forever remembered as a generous and loving wife, mother, sister and friend. She will be sadly missed by all her family, friends and business associates.

After graduating from high school, Washington Academy in East Machias, Maine, and from college at the University of Maine at Fort Kent, Connie enjoyed a successful career in the textile industry, and was director of marketing for Valdese Weavers.

Connie is survived by her loving family; husband Robert, daughter Emma and son Sam, all of Ada. Also surviving are her siblings, Valerie Plourde Ouellet and husband Robert of Fort Kent, Maine, Mary Theresa Plourde of Waterford, Vt., Robert Plourde and wife Keily of Fort Kent, Maine; sister-in-law Nancy Carlton Wylie and husband Pat of Camden, S.C.; and brother-in-law David Carlton of Nashville, Tenn. In addition, Connie leaves her adoring nephews, Aaron and Mitchell Ouellet of Fort Kent; Peter Davenport of Waterford, Vt. Carl Wylie of Camden; and special niece Beth Wylie Poag, husband Charles and daughter Holly of Sumter, S.C.

The funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 29, at St. Robert's Church in Grand Rapids, Mich. Visiting hours were held Wednesday at O'Brien-Eggebeen-Gerst Funeral Chapel, 3980 Cascade Road, southeast. Rosary was also recited on Wednesday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Valere and Lucy Plourde Memorial Scholarships, c/o PO Box 374, Fort Kent, Maine, 04743.

Therese Pepin Dumont

1923-2003

NEWCASTLE — Therese Pepin Dumont, daughter of Theodore J. Pepin and Mary Anne Geroux, born Dec. 31, 1923, passed into the next life at her home on Tuesday morning, May 27, 2003.

Born in Waterville, she was a graduate of Mount Merici High School and Thomas College. She was an accomplished pianist and singer. She loved all music. Terry was also an avid reader.

She was employed for many years by Keyes Fiber Company. Her last position there was secretary to the treasurer. She had been a resident of Newcastle for 40 years and was employed as secretary for St. Patrick's Church for many years. Terry was a member of St. Patrick's Church and served as a Eucharistic minister. A deeply spiritual person, she was a daughter of the Divine Will.

Her wish was that we would celebrate her life at her funeral. Mom gave her life to her family: her husband, children and grandchildren. We will miss her homemade bread and homemade jams. She loved anything that came out of the earth. We will miss her holidays together and our "May Fools" picnics on breezy, sunny days. We will especially miss the joy she brought to all of our lives.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Lawrence; her five children, Andrea, Mary Anne, Larry, Ted and Suzie; and 10 grandchildren.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 30, at Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta. Her service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, May 31, at St. Patrick's Church, with the Rev. Ray Picard officiating. She will be laid to rest at St. Patrick's Cemetery.

Allen L. Lawrence

1940-2003

PITTSFIELD — Allen L. Lawrence, 62, died May 27, 2003, at a Pittsfield hospital. He was born in Waterville on July 9, 1940, son of John and Carrie (Pomeroy) Lawrence.

He worked for Leon Gordon construction for many years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a real outdoorsman. He was always ready with a good joke and would arm-wrestle anyone willing to challenge him. He will be sadly missed.

Allen was predeceased by his father and a sister, Janice.

Survivors include his mother, Carrie Lawrence; daughters Belinda Sterling-LaFlamme and husband Carl of Winslow, Lizetta and Sparkey Starkey of Troy; sons Lee Lawrence of Newport, Wade and Elizabeth Lawrence of Berlin, N.H., and Mark Lawrence; brothers Dan and wife Joyce Lawrence, Roger and wife Catherine Lawrence, and John Lawrence; sister Joanne and husband Bobby Knowlton of Freedom; longtime companion Diane Parsons and her son, John Parsons; their son together, Mark Lawrence of Newport; grandchildren Chris and Nick Sterling, Anthony Bowley and Cory Lawrence, Casey Lawrence and Elisa and Dana Lawrence.

A gathering will be held 10 a.m. June 2, at First Universal Church in Pittsfield. Arrangements are under the care of Cremation Services of Maine, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast.
