Elizabeth Farnham

PORTLAND — Elizabeth Farnham, 86, of Mabel Street, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at a Portland hospital after a brief illness.

She was born in Portland, daughter of William L. and Dora S. (Leighton) Wish, and graduated from Deering High School in Portland. She attended Westbrook Seminary and Westbrook Junior College.

Mrs. Farnham was employed by different insurance companies as a claims adjuster for 40 years, retiring in 1981.

She was a member of the Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church and a member of its extension group.

Her husband, Charles C. Farnham, died in 1978.

Survivors include a son, William C. Farnham, of Scarborough; a grandson, John M. Farnham, of Waterville, and a granddaughter, Leanne Collins, of Scarborough; and four great-grandchildren.

There will be no visiting hours.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, at Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church in Portland. Burial will be made at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 29, at Evergreen Cemetery, Stevens Avenue, Portland. Arrangements are by Jones Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home of Portland.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Maine Division Inc., 52 Federal St., Brunswick ME 04011.

Pauline M. (Sewell) McDonald

NEWPORT/INVERNESS, Fla. — Pauline M. Sewell McDonald, 88, of Inverness, Fla., and Newport, Maine, was escorted from her earthly home in Inverness, Fla., by angels to her heavenly home Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, where she was united with her Lord and Savior and her father and mother, Freeman and Nellie (Day) Faulkner.

She was born Nov. 2, 1911, in Woodland (Aroostook County), Maine, and received her education in Woodland schools.

She had been a Newport resident for over 40 years and had also lived in Fillmore, Calif., and Waterville, Maine.

She was predeceased by her husband and father of her children, Manzer Sewell, July 10, 1972, after 44 years of marriage.

He second husband, Howard McDonald, died Dec. 17, 1985, following 10 years of marriage.

Pauline was employed at Cummings mill in Newport, Eastland Woolen Mill in Corinna and Dexter Shoe Co. in Dexter for many years.

She was a member of Newport Full Gospel Church in Newport for many years and, in California, was active in the Fillmore Assembly of God Church. In Inverness, she attended the Calvary Bible Church. In her younger years, she was active in Sunday school and Woman's Missionary Council, in which she served as president for several years.

She enjoyed doing crafts and made many beautiful afghans to give to her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include two sons, Herbert Sewell, and wife, Flora, of Hermon, and Roger Sewell, and wife, Carolyn, of Inverness; three daughters, Carrie French, of Brunswick, Inez MacKinnon, and husband, Ralph, of Inverness, Priscilla Smith, and husband, Edwin, of Pittsfield; a brother, Vernie Faulkner, and wife, Betty, of Wade; 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by five sisters, including Natila Howe, Priscilla Pierce, Carrie Cooley and Tina Erickson; six brothers, including Elroy, Jasper, Funzey, Hollis and Jonah Faulkner; and an infant brother and sister, Mary and Cecil Faulkner, as well as three infant grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 29, at Brown Funeral Home, 24 High St., Newport, with Dr. Barry Dutton officiating. A eulogy will be read from her pastor in Florida, the Rev. David Cannon, who was with the family at the time of her death and was a very dear friend.

Spring burial will be made in the family lot at the Riverside Cemetery in Newport.

Gerald J. Pomahatch

PITTSFIELD — Gerald J. Pomahatch, 61, of Pittsfield, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at the Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

He was born June 23, 1938, in St. Paul, Minn., son of Albert and Geraldine (Murphy) Pomahatch.

Gerald married Judith "Judie" Andrukaitis on Sept. 27, 1958.

He was an U.S. Air Force veteran, serving his country for 28 years in many different areas of the world, including Portsmouth, N.H., Misawa, Japan, Aleutian Islands, Alaska; Vietnam, Kunsan, Korea, Alamagordo, N.M.; Sacramento, Calif., Ramstein, Germany, Grand Forks, N.D., Aviano, Italy, Scott Air Force Base in Bellville, Ill., and Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana.

He retired in 1984 as a senior master sergeant, being the recipient of several decorations and medals, including the Meritorious Service Medal and the Air Force Commendation Medal.

Mr. Pomahatch was employed by the Pittsfield post office and the Corinna post office for 13 years.

He was a very loving husband, father, grandfather and brother, continually placing other people's needs ahead of his own. He was a talented musician, enjoyed reading and working with the computer. He also collected miniature antique automobiles.

Gerald was a member and former adjutant for over 13 years of the American Legion Post 32 in Pittsfield, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Vietnam Association, and the Air Force Sergeants Association.

Surviving are his wife, Judith, of Pittsfield; his mother, Geraldine Pomahatch, of White Bear Lake, Minn.; a son, Alan Pomahatch, and his wife, Roz, of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; two daughters, Jeanne Hall, and her husband, Art, of Belleville, Ill., and Lori Wagner, and her fiance, Michael Dyer, of Pittsfield; seven grandchildren, Shane, Nicholas, Kassaundra, Ashley, Lindsay, Tori and Alec; two brothers and their wives, Richard and Dee Pomahatch, of Gainsville, Fla., and Steve and Annette Pomahatch, of Stockholm, Wis.; a sister and her husband, Mary K. and Thomas Estrem, of White Bear Lake, Minn.; his wife's mother, Marion McQuilkin, of Pittsfield; two brothers-in-law, David and Daniel McQuilkin, both of Hampden; sister-in-law and her husband, Sandra and Clair Hopkins, of Dixmont; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many close friends, including Mike and Dorothy Dunleavy.

Friends and relatives called Thursday at D.H. Shorey Funeral Chapel of Pittsfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Detroit Avenue, Pittsfield.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 122 State St., Augusta ME 04330.

Lawrence A. Roy

AUGUSTA — Lawrence A. Roy, 97, of Congress Street, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at Augusta Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness.

He was born May 19, 1902, in Waterville, son of Cyril P. and Selina (Pooler) Roy.

Mr. Roy was a graduate of Colby College in Waterville, class of 1927, and was one of the oldest living Colby graduates.

He was a member of Penney Memorial United Baptist Church in Augusta, where he sang in the church choir. He was also a member of Phi Delta fraternity and American Association of Retired Persons (AARP).

Mr. Roy played saxophone in jazz bands in the Augusta area for many years. He was employed by the state Department of Health and Welfare for 14 years and previously worked for the Hallowell school system as a teacher for 13 years.

Mr. Roy was predeceased by his wife, Gladys (Donna) Roy, and two sisters, Viola Oakes and Lydia M. Burns.

He is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, where a funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 28, with the Rev. Robert Beaumont, pastor of Penney Memorial United Baptist Church, officiating.

Burial will be made in the spring at Pine Grove Cemetery, Waterville.

Evelyn M. Simpson

OAKLAND — Evelyn Mae Simpson, 87, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at her Oakland in Oakland.

She was born Dec. 4, 1912, in Waterville, daughter of Ralph and Gertrude (Wales) Reynolds.

She was the widow of Arthur J. Simpson, who died in 1976.

She and her husband operated Simpson's Taxi Service for many years.

She was a member of Blessed Hope Advent Christian Church in Waterville.

Survivors include a son, Arthur J. Simpson Jr., and wife, Lucille, of Winslow; a daughter, Eva, and her husband, Fred Rabideau, of Lebanon, Conn.; five sisters, Eva M. White, of Oakland, Myrtle Perry, of Waterville, Ethel Soule, of Fairfield, Conn., Helen Kozek, of Southport, Conn., and Frances Reynolds, of Oakland; six grandchildren, Russell, Tammy, Sandra, Debbie, Kim and Fred; eight great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be announced by Redington Funeral Home of Waterville. Spring burial will be made at Pine Grove Cemetery, Waterville.

Donations may be made in her memory to Blessed Hope Advent Christian Church, Pleasant Street, Waterville.

Frank A. Besse

CLINTON — Frank A. Besse, 101, of Clinton, passed away Wednesday evening, May 31, 2000, at his home in Clinton.

He was born March 1, 1899, in Albion, son of the late Everett and Jessie (Rowe) Besse, and graduated from Besse High School in Albion. He received a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Maine at Orono in 1920. After graduation from college, he was employed by his uncle, Frank L. Besse, at his tannery in Clinton until 1927. He then went to Boston as an employee of the sales division of the tanning business, Besse, Osburn, & Odell Inc.

In 1932 he returned to Clinton to manage the tannery, which was named Besse Bros. Inc., continuing in this position as president and manager of Besse Bros. Inc. until retiring in 1968.

In 1933 he married Doris M. Dickey of Clinton; she passed away last Wednesday, May 24, 2000.

He was always active in civic affairs being a member of the 98th Maine Legislature, an active member of the Clinton Republican Committee, a school committee member, and an original member of the Clinton Water District when the district was formed and the water and sewer system was constructed. He was an officer of the Greenlawn Rest Association and the Brown Memorial Library. On a regional basis, he was a member and past president of the Waterville Rotary Club, trustee and vice president of the Waterville Savings Bank, member and president of Associated Industries of Maine, and director and officer of the Good Will-Home Association. He was a member of the American Legion and several Masonic orders.

Frank and his wife, Doris, continued to stay knowledgeable of current affairs locally and nationally right up to both of their deaths.

Three brothers, Carroll, Floyd and Harland, and two sisters, Erdine Dolloff and Arlene Buley, predeceased him.

Survivors include a son, Frank E. Besse, and wife, Byrla, of Merrimack, N.H.; two grandchildren, Jill Romero, of Nashua, N.H., and Jonathan Besse, and wife, Melissa, of Framingham, Mass.; two great-grandchildren, David and Allison Romero, of Nashua; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 2, at the Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main St., Fairfield.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 3, at the funeral home with the Rev. Susan Davenport officiating.

Donations in his memory may be made to either the Brown Memorial Library, Railroad Street, Clinton ME 04927; or Brown Memorial Methodist Church, PO Box 58, Clinton ME 04927.

Blanche M. Cipriano

NORTH ANSON — Blanche M. Cipriano, 72, of North Anson, formerly of North Attleboro, Mass., died Sunday, May 28, 2000, at Maine Medical Center in Portland after a short illness.

She was born Dec. 10, 1927, daughter of William and Catherine (Bird) Cunningham.

She was predeceased by her husband, James; daughter, Francis; grandson, John John; and her brother, Albert Nolan.

Survivors include her five sons, James Jr. and John, of North Attleboro, Thomas, of Plymouth, Mass., Anthony, of Franklin, Mass., and Michael, of Harmony; four daughters, Blanche Lyons, of Attleboro, Margaret Fisher, of North Attleboro, Ellen Lavasseur, of North Anson, and Catherine Jordon, of Vanceboro; sisters, Patricia Smith, of West Bridgewater, Mass., Lorraine Cavanaugh, of Marshfield, Ann Marie Lagrippo, of Norwell, Mass., Francis Fleming, of Clearwater, Fla., Margaret Hurley, of La Crescenta, Calif., Theresa Johnson, of Palm Harbor, Fla., Kay Kane, of Mobile, Ala., Barbara McAndrew, of Marshfield, Mass.; 24 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, June 2, in Massachusetts.

Nason R. Corey Jr.

FAIRFIELD — Nason R. Corey Jr., 78, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at his home.

He was born April 19, 1922, in Larone, son of Nason R. Corey Sr. and Estella (Broad) Corey, and attended local schools. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, Dec. 11, 1941, and served in the Panama Canal Zone in the South Pacific where he was twice wounded in action. He was honorably discharged Dec. 11. 1945.

He was employed by Joseph's Marine Outlet in Fairfield and later for Dore's Marine Service in Skowhegan as a master mechanic in outboard motors. He loved to paint, write poems, and target practice.

Survivors include two brothers, Charles Dyer and Douglas Corey; nieces and nephews. Nate was a second father and friend to many Fairfield children, including Mike, Mitch, Robert, Lillian, and Valarie MacArthur, James Edwards, and many more.

He was predeceased by a sister, Eva Corey Whittet.

A graveside service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Lawry Brothers Funeral Home of Fairfield.
