Edwin O. Monroe

WHITEFIELD — Edwin O. Monroe, 79, of Route 17, a longtime heavy-equipment operator, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta Campus, after a brief illness.

He was born in Norwich, Conn., Dec. 3, 1921, the son of Edwin and Ruth (Reed) Monroe. He attended school in Connecticut and moved to this area when he was 18.

He was married to Blossom Mabel Lowden in 1945. He worked for Raymond Harris Construction and the Augusta Iron Works. He then worked 25 years at Bridge Construction and later for A.E. Andrews for 13 years. He then worked for the Leonard Kelley Farm and Ben Pushard.

Edwin worked for Roland Bragg at Nobleboro Building Movers and, for the past several years, worked with his son at Frank Monroe Construction.

He loved to plow snow and was working at the time he was taken ill, shortly before he died. He had been a skilled heavy-equipment operator and welder all of his life, operating all types of bulldozers.

His wife died March 5, 1996.

Surviving are his son, Frank M. Monroe and wife, Melissa, of Whitefield; his two stepsons, Ernest Raven and his wife, Lillian, of Tennessee, and Dennis Raven and his wife, Lucille, of Delta Junction, Alaska; six grandchildren, Allen, Paul, Ernie, Tammy, Tracy, and Tina Raven; and several nieces and nephews.

His sister, Joanne Harris, and a grandson, Pvt. John Raven, USAF, died previously.

Visiting hours will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, at Gray & Pratt Funeral Home, 5391 Windsor Neck Road, Windsor.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, at the funeral home with the Rev. Branan Becknell, pastor of Windsor Memorial Baptist Church, officiating. Committal and burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery, Route 32, Windsor.

If desired, the family suggests memorial gifts to the Windsor Memorial Baptist Church, Attn: Church Addition Fund, RR1 Box 1800, Windsor ME 04363. Contribution envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Geraldine M. Picard

AUGUSTA — Geraldine M. "Gerry" Picard, 68, of Riverside Drive, died suddenly Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at her home in Augusta.

She was born at Caswell Plantation, May 14, 1932, the daughter of Claude and Yvonne (Labreck) Grenier, and graduated from Van Buren High School.

She had been employed by the City of Augusta as a crossing guard at Williams School for 21 years and had been on duty the day she died. She was also currently employed as a custodian at the office of Dr. Daniel Clark, where she had worked for 24 years.

She was a Cub Scout Den Mother and leader for many years for Troop 678 in Augusta.

She was a communicant of St. Andrew's Catholic Church, where she was a Eucharistic Minister and taught CCD classes for more than 17 years.

Mrs. Picard was a member of the Gardiner Singles Club Board of Trustees, American Association of Retired Persons, and was an avid bingo player. Most of all, she was a devoted mother and grandmother.

She was predeceased by her husband, Simon J. Picard, Aug. 15, 1974.

Survivors include her three sons, Wayne Picard and his significant other, Katie Hughes, Ronald Picard and his wife, Stacy, and Robert Picard and his wife, Rhonda, all of Vassalboro; five brothers, Herbert Pelkey, of Florida, Howard Pelkey, of Guilford, George Pelkey, of Zephyrhills, Fla., Mike Pelkey, of Pittsfield, and Richard Pelkey, of Stetson; four sisters, Bernice Currier, of Guilford, Lorraine Dominique, of Long Island, N.Y., Hazel Numberg, of Belmont, N.H., and Irene Pelkey, of Oakland; seven grandchildren, Christopher Picard and his significant other, Patricia Putnam, Jaime Picard and her significant other, Joshua Hall, Angie Picard and her fiance, Jean Couturier, Robby Picard, Ryan Picard, Jason Picard and Randy Picard; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may visit from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, and Sunday, Feb. 4, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, where officers and members of Abnaki Council 334-3rd Degree Knights of Columbus are asked to meet at 7 p.m. Sunday to recite prayers for Gerry, wife of their departed member Simon J. Picard.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Monday, Feb. 5, at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Augusta. Burial will follow in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Old Belgrade Road, Augusta.

Robert C. Sweet

WATERVILLE — Robert C. Sweet, 75, formerly of Fairfield, died Thursday afternoon, Feb. 1, 2001, at Oak Grove Living & Rehabilitation Center in Waterville.

He was born Nov. 13, 1925, in Waterville, son of Galen F. and Ann F. (Choate) Sweet.

He was formerly employed as a laborer for 38 years by Maine Central Railroad, retiring in 1986. He was a member of TCU and the AFL-CIO.

He was predeceased by his parents, a sister, Barbara Ann, and his wife, Helen L. (Cosgrove) Sweet, who passed away Aug. 20, 1999.

Survivors include his son, Richard Sweet, of Waterville; two daughters, Mrs. Alfred (Beverly) Quirion, of Oakland, and Mrs. David (Jean) Roy, of Smithfield; one sister, Mrs. Lester C. Fogg Jr., of El Paso, Texas; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, at the Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm St., Waterville.

A funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Monday, Feb. 5, at the Sacred Heart Church, 70 Pleasant St., Waterville. Committal prayers will be recited at the church, and burial will follow at the St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, Grove Street, Waterville.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the American Lung Association of Maine, 122 State St., Augusta ME 04330.

Josephine H. Soper

OAKLAND — The names of a surviving daughter and son-in-law should have read: Jody Soper, and her husband, Dave Wright, of Oakland.

Alice M. Withee

MADISON — Alice May Withee, 93, of Madison, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at the Woodlawn Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in Skowhegan.

She was born Jan. 4, 1908, in Stetson, the daughter of Burnette and Asenath (Cook) Withee. She was a summa cum laude graduate of Machias Normal School. She taught school for several years and was a caregiver for her parents in their home.

Alice has been a resident of Madison for six years and previously lived in Newport for many years.

She enjoyed going to lawn sales.

A sister, Edna Shaw, and two brothers, Burton Withee and Burnette Withee Jr., all died previously.

Survivors include a sister, Ella Palmer, of Bingham; three nieces and seven nephews.

A graveside service will be held in the spring at the Riverside Cemetery in Newport with arrangements by Giberson Funeral Home of Madison.

Joseph P. Bergeron

WATERVILLE — Joseph P. Bergeron, 81, of Fairfield, went home to the Lord and waiting loved ones Thursday, March 29, 2001, in Waterville, after fighting a lost battle with cancer.

He was born June 19, 1919, in Jackman, the first son of the late Lazor and Evangeline (Boulette) Bergeron. He was known to many as "Joe Joe." Joe will forever be remembered by those who knew him as always having a smile and never having a complaint despite his afflictions. He also enjoyed telling his stories of his once-owned car and his favorite day of the year, April Fool's Day.

Joe was predeceased by a devoted sister, Alexina Bergeron Johnson, and her husband, Warren, of Fairfield, with whom he resided for many years; two brothers, Henry Bergeron, and his wife, Lillian, of Fairfield, and Charles Bergeron, of Massachusetts.

Survivors include a special niece, Shirley Hewett, of Mercer, who lovingly stayed by his side for many years, and several other nieces, nephews, great nieces and great-nephews.

At the request of the family, there will be no visiting hours. There will be a committal service in the spring. For those who desire, contributions in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, Maine Division, Inc., 52 Federal St., Brunswick ME 04011-2194.

Reynold Burgess

OAKLAND — Reynold "Ted" Burgess, 79, of Oakland, died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta with his family at his side.

He was born Nov. 16, 1921, in Waterville, son of Reynold and Blanche (Butler) Burgess.

Ted served in the U.S. Army Infantry during World War II. He was wounded in the European Theater and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Waterville Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Decker Simmons Post, American Legion in Oakland.

He was employed many years at the Turner & Seymour Foundry in Torrington, Conn. Returning to Maine, he worked in many positions for the town of Oakland.

Ted has been a resident of Maine for over 20 years and was a member of the Pine Ridge Golf Course; he was an avid golfer and pool player.

He was predeceased by his wife, Marie Burgess, a brother, Earl Burgess, and a sister, Marjorie Burgess.

Survivors include two sisters, Madeline Stubbert, of Oakland, and Beverly Barrett, of Harmony, a brother, Leonard Dick Burgess, of Brooksville, Fla.; four daughters, Bernadette, Bonnie, Debbie, and Shirley, living out of state; several nieces and nephews, and many special friends.

At his request there will be no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Old Belgrade Road, Augusta, at a later date. Arrangements are by Wheeler Funeral Home of Oakland.

Those who wish may make memorial donations to the Humane Society Waterville Area, 120 Drummond Ave., Waterville ME 04901.

Robert N. DeLisle

VASSALBORO — Robert Norman DeLisle, 75, of the Cross Hill Road in Vassalboro, died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at the MaineGeneral Medical Center in Waterville after a courageous battle with end stage renal disease.

Surviving are his wife and best friend of 48 years, Priscilla (Jones) DeLisle, of Vassalboro; his sons, Robert B. and his wife, Joanne, of Heath, Mass., Darryl G. and his wife, Nancy, of Hubbardston, Mass., Christopher J. and his wife, Brenda, of Randolph, Andrew C. and his fiancee, Katherine McIver, of Oakland; his daughters, Cynthia L. Kustra and her husband, Walter, of Petersham, Mass., and Rebecca J. DeLisle, of Augusta; and eight grandchildren. Surviving sisters are Gladys Sweeney, of Oceanside, Calif., Lucille Curtwright, of Kanab, Utah, Doris Valois, of Leominster, Mass., Estelle Goselin, of Norwich, Conn., and Loretta Ettore, of Schenectady, N.Y.; many nieces and nephews.

He attended schools in Athol and Leominster, Mass. Robert served with the 23rd U.S. Navy Seabees during World War II. He worked many years as a restaurant manager in Massachusetts and later in Connecticut as a mold polisher. Upon retirement, he moved with his wife to Maine. He loved cooking, antiques, fishing and gardening. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Burial will be at the Worcester County Memorial Park in Paxton, Mass., where a memorial service will be held later in the spring. Arrangements are by Direct Cremation of Maine. Friends and relatives may send a donation in Robert's memory to the Dialysis Memorial Fund, MaineGeneral Medical Center, 149 North St., Waterville ME 04901.

Ethelyn F. Foster

FARMINGTON — Ethelyn Fish Foster, 78, of Farmington, died early Wednesday evening, March 28, 2001, at Orchard Park Rehabilitation & Living Center in Farmington following a brief illness.

She was born Dec. 28, 1922, in Madison, a daughter of Carroll and Jennie M. (Heald) Fish, and attended Madison schools, graduating from Madison High School in 1941.

On July 12, 1941, she married Everett "Bud" Foster in Madison. Following their marriage, Mrs. Foster moved to Farmington with her husband in 1946 to raise their family. After being a homemaker for many years, she worked at Bass Shoe in Wilton and as a certified nurse's aide at Hales Nursing Home in Farmington.

She was an avid reader and Civil War "buff." She enjoyed sewing, knitting and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 59 years; four sons, George, of Portland, Roger, of Harrison, Lee, of Stephentown, N.Y., and Bruce, of North Bend, Wash.; three daughters, Leslie Michaud, of Green Cove Springs, Fla., Carol Ann Powers, of New Vineyard, and Audrey Brown, of New Sharon; a sister, Florence Dusty, of Webster, Mass.; a special niece, Norma B. Murray, of Oxford, Mass.; 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A private family graveside service will be held later in the spring at Riverside Cemetery in Farmington. Gifts may be given in her memory to the American Cancer Society, Maine Division, Inc., 52 Federal St., Brunswick ME 04011. Arrangements are in the care of the Wiles Funeral Home in Farmington.

Elmina R. Lane

PITTSFIELD — Elmina R. Lane, 94, died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at a Pittsfield hospital.

She was born July 2, 1906, in Stetson, daughter of Alvie and Jessie (Dresser) Brown.

She was employed by several of the local businesses, including Stitham's Cafe, C. Hollis Lane Lumber Co., Berry's Drug Store and Pittsfield Coal & Oil.

She was a member of the Stetson Grange, the Pittsfield Rebekahs and the S&P Club.

She is survived by a brother, Almon Brown, of Bangor; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, C. Hollis Lane, two brothers, Claude and Allen, and a sister, Leora French.

Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 31, at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Newport, where a funeral will follow at 2 p.m. with Pastor Al Worden officiating. Burial will be in the Pittsfield Village Cemetery later this spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
