Norman J. Wysocki

BREWER — Norman James Wysocki, 67, died early Friday, June 2, 2000, at his daughter's home, in Waterville, after a short battle with cancer.

He was born in Detroit, Mich., April 20, 1933, the son of Bronislaw and Mary (Roza) Wysocki.

Mr. Wysocki was a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He served during the Vietnam Conflict, and the Korean War.

He was an employee of the U.S. Postal Service, for 20 years, at the new Hampden plant, in Hampden.

Those who knew Norman will remember his kindness and wisdom.

He enjoyed puttering in his garden and taking walks. He loved family gatherings, and traveling with his daughter and her family.

Survivors include his daughter, Michele Whitten, her husband Richard, and their children, Stephanie, Stacie, and J.T., all of Waterville; his son, Shawn Wysocki, and his wife, Kristine, and their children, Devon and Victoria, all of Brewer; his son, Eugene Cote, and his wife, Terry, and their son, Ryan, all of Brewer; his sons, Norman Wysocki Jr., and Anthony Wysocki, both of Augusta; also, very special relatives, Brenda Wysocki, and her children, Kristyn and Erica, Gena and Dave Poulin, and their children, Adam and Sara, and Rose Manzo.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, June 5, at Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm St., Waterville. A military service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 6, at Father Leonard LeClair Memorial Chapel, Old Belgrade Road, Augusta, with the Rev. Gilbert Patenaude officiating. Burial will follow, in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to American Cancer Society, Maine Division, 52 Federal St., Brunswick 04011.

Robert A Nye

WATERVILLE — Robert A Nye, 46, of Spring Street, died unexpectedly Thursday, June 1, 2000, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 14, 1954, in Waterville, the son of John And Alice (Goodale) Nye.

Mr. Nye had been self-employed, as a carpenter and handyman, for several years.

Survivors include two daughters, Desiree Campbell, of Oakland, and Alicesha Nye, of Waterville; two sons, Robert A Nye Jr., and Benjamin Oaks, both of Waterville; his mother, Alice Nye, of Waterville; sister, Regina Breard, of Waterville; six brothers, James Stevens, of Stratton, David Stevens, of Belfast, and Richard, Steven, Gerald, and Timothy Nye, all of Waterville; granddaughter, Jade Oliver; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his girlfriend, Barbara Tilton, of Waterville.

Visitation will be held from 3 p.m. until a funeral at 4 p.m. Monday, June 5, at Church of the Nazarene, 81 Main St, Fairfield, with Rev. Gary Sinclair officiating. Burial will be at a later date, in Pine Grove Cemetery, in Waterville.

Arrangments are by Gallant Funeral Home, Waterville.

Vincent A. Dufresne

AUBURN — Vincent A. Dufresne, 75, formerly of 7 Russell St., Lewiston, died early Friday morning, June 2, 2000, at Auburn Nursing Home, following a lifelong illness.

He was born in Waterville, June 18, 1924, the son of Oscar Albert and Dorothy Catherine (Bean) Dufresne.

While a resident of Auburn Nursing Home he enjoyed social activities and outdoor trips planned by the nursing facility.

Mr. Dufresne attended Grace Lutheran Church, in Auburn.

He was predeceased by his mother, who died in 1989.

Mr. Dufresne is survived by his father, Oscar Dufresne, of Exeter, N.H.; a sister, Millicent, and her husband, Donald Kline, of Sabattus; two nephews; one great-niece; and two great-nephews.

Visiting hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, June 4, at Fortin Group/Teague Funeral Home, Turner and Center Streets, Auburn.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 5, at Grace Lutheran Church, Auburn. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Lewiston.

Vernon A. Baston Sr.

STRONG — Vernon A. Baston Sr., 77, of Strong, died Friday, June 2, 2000, at Franklin Memorial Hospital, in Farmington, where he had been a patient for the past 10 days, following a brief illness.

He was born Nov. 21, 1922, in Richmond, the son of Allen G. and Hazel (MacMaster) Baston.

Mr. Baston was educated in the schools of Livermore Falls.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.

After the war, and for most of his life, he worked for Starbird Lumber Co., of Strong, retiring in 1985.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, fly tying, and being with his family.

Vernon was married to Elsie Sabine for 45 years. She died in 1993.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Donald and Bernard.

Mr. Baston is survived by two sons, Vernon Baston Jr., of Standish, and John Baston, of Strong; two stepsons, William Cook, of Wilton, and Dale Starbird, of Connecticut; a stepdaughter, Betty Gogila, of Rhode Island; three brothers, George Baston, of Chisholm, Edgar Baston, of Clearwater, Fla., and Sherwood Baston, of Rye, N.H.; three sisters, Marge Oberton, of Livermore, Erlene Wood, of Strong, and Loraine Mitchell of Strong; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several stepgrandchildren; and several stepgreat-grandchildren.

Visitation hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 4, at Adams Funeral Home, 3 Court St., Farmington. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 5, at the funeral home, with Rev. Steven Bracy officiating. Interment will be in Starbird Corner Cemetery, in Freeman.

George A. Sandy

HARMONY — George A. Sandy, 80, died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at a Skowhegan nursing home.

He was born March 29, 1920, in Medway, son of George and Vera (Spinney) Sandy. He had served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1617 in Derry, N.H.

He worked in the steel building trade and was a millwright at Holt & Bugbee Lumber Co. in Tewksbury, Mass.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marion (Jacobson) Sandy, of Harmony; a son, Carlton Sandy, of Allenstown, N.H.; a daughter, Pamela, and her husband, Dennis Brunet, of Derry, N.H.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; several cousins.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 17, at the Hillside Cemetery in Monson with arrangements by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home of Guilford.

Those who wish may make donations to the American Lung Association, 128 Sewall St., Augusta 04330.

Judy Little

COOPER — Judy Little, 53, beloved wife of Terry Little, died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at Eastern Maine Medical Center, in Bangor, after a brief illness.

She left behind her husband, of 35 years; three daughters, Terri Lynn and her husband Jeff, Laurie Ann, and her husband, Marlin, and Brandy; her two granddaughters she adored, Sierra and Tiffany; and special sisters, Belinda Winn, and Chris Caron.

There will be no funeral service by request of the deceased.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your area animal shelter.

Arrangements are by Direct Cremation of Maine, Belfast.

Kathleen H. Covell

FREEPORT — Kathleen H. Covell, 91, widow of Arthur Covell, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, at Freeport Nursing Home.

She resided in Waterville for 64 years before moving to Brunswick last year.

Mrs. Covell was born Dec. 11, 1908, in Albion, daughter of Carl Spencer Drake and Beatrice (Nellie) Hayhurst Drake, and graduated from Besse High School.

Mrs. Covell graduated in 1929 from Farmington State Normal School, now the University of Maine at Farmington, and also took courses at the University of Maine at Orono and Waterville's Colby College.

She taught in Albion and Clinton schools, and retired from the Waterville public-school system after teaching there for 21 years.

She previously attended Albion Christian Church, where she was married Aug. 8, 1936, to Arthur E. Covell, who predeceased her in 1992.

Mrs. Covell was a member of Pleasant Street United Methodist Church, Barbara Beecher Circle of the Waterville Woman's Club, Early American Glass Club, Kennebec Retired Teachers Association, and state and national Retired Teachers associations.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara C. Riggs, of Princeton Junction, N.J.; a son, Douglas D. Covell, of Brunswick; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, at Pine Grove Cemetery, Waterville, with the Rev. Pat Parker, pastor of Waterville's First Baptist Church, officiating.

Those who wish may make memorial donations to Maine Cancer Research and Education Foundation, PO Box 5531, Portland ME 04112-0553.

Arrangements are by Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, of Fairfield.

John J. Houston

NORTH VASSALBORO ‹John J. Houston, 78, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2000.

He was born Feb. 3, 1922, in Farmington, son of Howard R. Houston and Ethel Rollins Houston.

He was a 1940 Brewer High School graduate and received his bachelor¹s degree in 1949 from Bates College in Lewiston, and his master¹s degree in 1953 from the University of Maine at Orono.

He played football, basketball and baseball in high school and college.

Prior to World War II and his graduation from Bates College, he attended The Citadel for two years, then entered the U.S. Army at the outbreak of World War II.

He served on active duty in the Army from 1942 to 1946, and in the active reserves until 1980. He retired as a colonel in command of the 1st Brigade, 76th Infantry Division.

He served during World War II in France, Belgium, and Germany, and received the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with Clusters, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, European Theater Ribbon with three Battle Stars, and the Belgium Croix de Guerre avec Palm 1940.

He married Marjorie Ann Tournier, of Lockport, N.Y., in 1947. She died Nov. 19, 1994.

He served as principal and teacher of Rolf B. Motz Junior High School, Falmouth, from 1949 to 1954, superintendent of School Union 114, Island Falls, from 1954 to 1955, and superintendent of School Union 52, which includes Winslow, Vassalboro, and China, from 1955 to 1984.

He was a member emeritus of the American Association of School Administrators, served as president of the New England Association of School Superintendents from 1971 to 1972, and was president of Maine School Superintendents from 1966 to 1967.

He was a life member of the National Education Association, member and deacon of Winslow Congregational Church, member of St. Andrews Lodge 83, AF&AM, of Bangor, Dunlap Chapter 12 of China, Mt. Lebanon Council 13 of Oakland, St. Omer Commandery of Waterville, and Maine Consistory of Portland, a life member of MacCrillis-Rousseau Veterans of Foreign Wars Post of Winslow, American Legion Post 126 of North Vassalboro, and was past president of Waterville Kiwanis Club.

He was a life member of the National Rifle Association, also of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, a life member of Sportsman¹s Alliance of Maine, a member of Pine Tree Chapter of Retired Officers Association, a life member of Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge, a life member of Maine State Beekeepers Association, and a member of Sons of the American Revolution.

Surviving are four sons, Dr. David R. Houston, and wife, Bonny Hutchinson Houston, of Winslow, John M. Houston, of Ogunquit, Steven K. Houston, and wife, Julie Bickford Houston, of Vassalboro, and Samuel R. Houston, and wife, Gloria Contreras Houston, of Modesto, Calif.; a sister, Priscilla Houston Menke, of Hempstead, Texas; two brothers, Joseph R. Houston, of Bangor, and Dr. Harry R. Houston, and wife, Bette Grierson Houston, of Bremerton, Wash.; six grandchildren, Vanessa D. Houston, of Portland, Christopher R. Houston, of Winslow, Matthew S. Houston and Kelsey B. Houston, of Vassalboro, and Samantha N. Houston and Elysia M. Houston, of Modesto, Calif.; two nieces and a nephew.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8, at Redington Funeral Home, 5 Park St., Waterville.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 9, at Winslow Congregational Church. Burial will be made at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Old Belgrade Road, Augusta.

In lieu of flowers, and at his request, memorials may be sent to the John J. Houston Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Winslow High School, Danielson Street, Winslow ME 04901.
