Cecile V. Boutin

WATERVILLE — Cecile V. Boutin, 92, of Waterville, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at Oak Grove Nursing Home in Waterville.

She was born May 27, 1908, in Waterville, daughter of Albert and Lena (Rousseau) Poulin.

She married Lucien Boutin, March 11, 1966.

She was employed for many years at Daviau Drug Store in Waterville.

Cecile was predeceased by a son, Ronald Murray, a sister, Bernadine Cloutier, and a brother, Fernand Poulin.

Survivors include her husband, Lucien Boutin, of Waterville; two grandchildren, Cathy Burbank and Timothy Murray, both of Augusta; two nieces, Carmen Coro, of Smithfield, and Ann Roy, of Washington, D.C.

There will be no visiting hours. A spring graveside service will be held at the St. Francis Catholic Cemetery in Waterville. Arrangements are under the direction of the Veilleux Funeral Home in Waterville.

Clifford J. Doiron

MADISON — Clifford J. Doiron, 94, of Madison, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at the Somerset Residential Care Center in Madison.

He was born Aug. 12, 1906, in New Brunswick, Canada, son of Theophile and Sophie (Daigle) Doiron.

He was employed at the American Woolen Mill and was a night watchman at Norrwock Shoe Co. for 20 plus years; he retired from Whittemore's Restaurant where he was a dishwasher for many years.

He was a life member of the Skowhegan Eagles Club.

Survivors include a very special niece, Doris Parlin and her husband, Richard, of Skowhegan, with whom he lived for many years, several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by eight sisters and two brothers.

A spring graveside service will be held. Arrangements are by Smart & Edwards Funeral Home in Skowhegan.

Hilda M. Elliott

MADISON — Hilda M. Elliott, 70, of Madison, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at her home in Madison.

She was born Sept. 3, 1930, in Sanford, daughter of Ronald and Isabel (Mitchell) Scott.

She was a homemaker for most of her life. She loved making crafts and collecting Beanie Babies.

Survivors include her husband of 33 years, Patrick H. Elliott, of Madison; four sons, Scott Labbe, of Madison, Joe L. Cahoon, of Franklin, Mass., James E. Cahoon, of Nantucket, Mass., and Ronald S. Elliott, of Exeter, N.H.; two daughters, Pamela J. Marken and Denna Cahoon, both of Nantucket; six stepchildren, Patrick H. Elliott III, Michael Elliott, of Florida, Bonnie L. Gray, of Stockton Springs, Phyllis A. Walker, of North Carolina, Timothy B. Elliott, of Massachusetts, and Christopher C. Elliott, of Pensacola, Fla.

She was predeceased by a stepson, Greg Elliott.

A memorial service will take place at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by Smart & Edwards Funeral Home in Skowhegan.

Rena Hilton

OAKLAND — Rena Hilton, 63, passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2001, after a year-long battle with ovarian cancer. She was the beloved mother of sons, David and Daniel McAllister, and a special companion to Russ Wolfertz.

Rena was raised in the Norridgewock area. She graduated valedictorian from Madison High School and later attended the University of Maine at Orono where she achieved her bachelor's degree and later her master's degree. Her roots ran strongly in education and she enjoyed "young people and their energy." She influenced the lives of students and peers in Madison, York, and Waterville, and in the final years at Lawrence High School in Fairfield, where she was a member of the guidance team. Her desire for learning never waned as she continued to discover topics that intrigued her. Among the many interests that she enjoyed were boating, exploring the coast of Maine, and gardening in the rich soils of her gardens in Oakland. In her continued desire to educate and mentor young adults she volunteered to chaperone students on visits to Russia, China, and Europe and Finland. It was on these trips that she discovered a love and talent for photography. This skill produced many vivid images of the world through her eyes. She also developed a spectacular picture collection of Maine lighthouses that adorned a 2001 calendar.

Survivors include two sons, David and his wife, Janice, of Sparta, N.J., and Dan and his wife, Candise, of Oreland, Pa.; four grandchildren, Amanda, Ryan, Devon and Colin, who will miss their "gram." Survivors also include her loving companion and finance, Russ Wolfertz, of Owls Head; two brothers and six sisters, numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends may attend visiting hours from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, April 1, at the Wheeler Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Oakland. A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday, April 2, at St. Mark Episcopal Church, Eustis Parkway, Waterville.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lawrence High School Student Leadership Fund, c/o Steve Knight, 9 School St., Fairfield ME 04937, in memory of Rena Hilton.

Terrance K. Johnson

CORNVILLE — Terrance K. Johnson, 39, of Cornville, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at his home in Cornville.

He was born Oct. 16, 1961, in Skowhegan, son of Francis S. Johnson Sr. and Dorothy (Vigue) Johnson, and graduated from Skowhegan Area High School, class of 1981.

He married Penny Stevens, July 25, 1987, in Skowhegan.

He was employed as a construction superintendent for Knowles Industrial Service out of Gorham for 10 years and prior to that he worked in construction.

He loved spending time with his children and at their sports. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed four-wheeling, hiking and white water rafting.

Survivors include his wife of 13 years; four children, Brad Johnson, Jared Johnson, Crystal Johnson and Cassandra Johnson, all of Cornville; his mother and father of Skowhegan; brother, Francis S. Johnson Jr. and his wife, Sheila, of Skowhegan; three sisters, Linda Phillips and her husband, Nels, of Smithfield, Deborah Shields and her husband, Mervell, of Norridgewock, and Virginia Sirois and her husband, Jude, of Norridgewock; many nieces and nephews; special friends, Eva Fortier, of Skowhegan, Charlie Spaulding and his companion, Hattie Weber, all of Skowhegan.

A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, April 2, at the Skowhegan Federated Church, Island Avenue, Skowhegan, with the Rev. Mark Tanner officiating. Arrangements are by Smart & Edwards Funeral Home in Skowhegan.

Peggy (Doyon) Schuchardt

WATERVILLE — Peggy (Doyon) Schuchardt, 45, of Waterville, died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Thayer Unit, Waterville.

She was born April 6, 1955, in Waterville, daughter of the late Norman J. Doyon, who passed away May 19, 1999, and Rose (Rancourt) Doyon, and graduated of Waterville Senior High School, class of 1973. She entered and served in the U.S. Navy for four years, stationed at the U.S. Naval Base in Norfolk, Va.

After the service, she made her residence in Palm Bay, Fla. While in Florida, she attended college and became a radiology technician until she became ill, battling a courageous fight with lung cancer.

She was a communicant of the Parish of the Holy Spirit in Waterville.

"A special note from her dear friends — Peggy was loved and will be dearly missed by her special and longtime friends as well as the new ones she made wherever she went. Peggy will always be remembered for her love of a good time, her humor, her strength, and the honesty with which she lived her life. Peggy was and remains a very special spirit."

Survivors include her mother, Rose Doyon; a very special brother and his fiancee, Daniel Doyon and Lana Hurtubise, whom she loved dearly; a son, Jack Daniel Schuchardt; a daughter, Chanel Rose Schuchardt; a special aunt, Lena King; loving nieces, Danielle and Danica Doyon; several special other aunts, uncles, cousins, and two very special friends of many years, Betty Luckraft, Jill Michaud; and Debbie Keene Jones, whom she also loved dearly.

There will be no visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 4, at Notre Dame Catholic Church, Silver Street, Waterville. Burial and committal prayers will be recited following the Mass at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Old Belgrade Road, Augusta. Arrangements are under the direction of the Veilleux Funeral Home in Waterville.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, NE Division Inc., 52 Federal St., Brunswick ME 04011.

Marie A. Houle

WATERVILLE — Marie A. Houle, 93, passed away Thursday evening, May 31, 2001, at a Waterville nursing care center. She was a former resident of 5 Summer St.

She was born May 14, 1908, in St. Victor, Quebec, the daughter of Archelas and Anna (Doyon) Houle, and attended Waterville schools.

She worked for Rollins and Dunham Hardware and Waterville Savings and Loan for many years.

Miss Houle was a member of St. Anne Sodality of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella, was a former Eucharist minister, was a member of the choir, St. Francis Parish Council, and board director of St. Francis de Sales Credit Union.

She was predeceased by a brother, Armand; four sisters, Eva Godin, Blanche Nadeau, Rose Alma Houle and Juliette Houle.

Survivors include a niece, Gloria Bosse, of Waterville; nephews, Jerome and Joseph Godin, of Winslow, and Carroll Houle, of Winslow; several grandnephews, grandnieces, great-grandnephews and great-grandnieces.

Relatives and friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 3, at Veilleux Funeral Home 8 Elm St., Waterville.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 4, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Waterville. A committal service follows, in St. Francis Cemetery, Waterville.

Jean Stephen Wellock

WATERVILLE — Jean Stephen (Downie) Wellock, 78, died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Eastern Maine Medical Center, Bangor.

She was born in New Britain, Conn., Aug. 8, 1922, a daughter of Andrew and Barbara Downie, and was a graduate of the University of Connecticut.

For all her married life of 50 years, Jean volunteered in many capacities with a strong preference for school libraries, which suited her fondness for reading and love of children's books. After moving to Waterville, she helped in kindergarten and the Albert S. Hall School libraries which she enjoyed and where she was greatly appreciated. She also worked on the Evening Sandwich Program and enjoyed the companionship of the Lunch Bunch.

Jean attended the Universalist Unitarian Church, Waterville.

Surviving are her husband, Robert Wellock, of Waterville; a sister and brother, Barbara Downie and Andrew Downie, of New Britain; her children, Margaret Yeterian, and her husband, Edward, of Waterville, and Douglas Wellock, and his wife, Jean, of Parker, Colo. Her grandchildren are Bob and Julie Yeterian, and Alexander and Victoria Wellock. It was to Julie that Jean gave her National Honor Society pin, earned 61 years ago, upon Julie's election to the honor society this year. She is also survived by two nephews and two grandnephews, all of them Downies. Jean was an honorary grandmother to six children of two families, now all adults, of Maple Street, Stow, Mass. It was the youngest who called her Gaga. The name stuck and is used by all her grandchildren and a few adults.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 9, at Universalist Unitarian Church, 69 Silver St., Waterville.

Donations may be made in her memory, to any library, especially for childrens books, would be appropriate.

Arrangements are under the care of Redington Funeral Home, 5 Park St., Waterville.

Richard Alan Cates

MADISON — Richard Alan "Ricky" Cates, 47, died suddenly Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Redington-Fairview General Hospital, Skowhegan, of natural causes.

He was born July 14, 1953, in Skowhegan, the son of Chandler M. and Ruth (Bishop) Cates, and was a lifelong resident of the Madison and Anson areas.

He was a self-employed trucker and lumberman, and owned and operated Cates & Son Trucking Co. for many years.

Ricky was an inspiration to many who knew him for his courageous seven year battle with multiple sclerosis.

His favorite pastimes were Mack trucks, motor sports, operating his custom built dune buggy and spending time with his grandson, Zachery.

A brother, Gary W. Cates, died previously.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Rae (McKenney) Cates, of Madison; his children, Jamie (Cates) Winn, and her husband, Jason, of Waterville, and Brandon R. Cates, and his wife, Amy, of Anson; a special grandson, Zachery B. Cates, of Anson; his mother, Ruth Cates Hardy, and stepfather, Charles, of Anson; brothers and sisters, Larry L. Cates, and his wife, Linda, of Sanford, Pamela J. Atwood, and her husband, Lindy, of North New Portland, John C. Cates, and his wife, Tess, of Skowhegan, and Judy E. Bolduc, and her husband, Dennis, of Oakland; numerous nieces, nephews and friends; and his loyal companion golden retriever "Miller."

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 5, at Calvary Pentecostal Church, Old Point Avenue, Madison. Interment will be in St. Sebastian Cemetery, Madison.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a memorial contribution to National Multiple Sclerosis Society-Maine Chapter, 175 Lancaster St., P.O. Box 8730, Portland 04104.

Arrangements are by Giberson Funeral Home, 40 Maple St., Madison.
