Prescott Jay 'Rocky' Daigle

1968-2003

ANSON — Prescott Jay Daigle, 34, died in a snowmobile accident, Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003.

He was born April 9, 1968, the son of Paul Joseph Jr. and Audrey (Stuteville) Daigle. Rocky graduated from Carrabec High School in North Anson with the class of 1986.

He was a self employed carpenter and co-owner of M D Construction. He inherited his grandmother's love of gardening and his vegetable gardens were tops. He enjoyed snowmobiling and four-wheeling.

He especially enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, playing pool and ping-pong with his sons and brothers. He enjoyed the companionship of friends and family and was always active; even during a year long battle with cancer in 1998-1999, it never slowed him down. May he rest in peace.

His father and a stepbrother, Gilman Page III, died previously.

He leaves his life-long partner, Jennifer Fotter, and his pride and joy, sons, Devan, 7, and Jarred, 4; his mother and stepfather, Audrey S. Daigle and Gilman W. Page Jr. of Anson; his brothers, Paul J. Daigle III, wife, Cheryl, and children, Brad and Kira Dickey of Anson, Patrick J. Daigle and Vicky Washburn, and children, Tracy and Nicholas of Anson, and Peter J. Daigle and children, Melinda and Christopher of Santa Rosa, Calif.; sisters, Pamela J. Dickey and children, Kyle and Jasen of Tampa, Fla., Nicki Rae of Saco and, children, Cori and Jake Goodwin of North Anson; grandmother, Olive Gilpatrick of Anson; stepbrothers, Michael and wife, Susan, of Portland, Andrew of Virginia, Tony and partner, Cindy, of Massachusetts, and Tim of Madawaska; uncles, Douglas Stuteville and family of Piedmont, Calif., Romeo Daigle of Maryland; aunts, Toots Perry and husband, Raymond, of Ashland, Gloria Jones and husband, Clint, of California, and Rita Evans of New York; and great-uncle, Lowell Sherwood and wife, Eva, of Hampden.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb.4, at Giberson Funeral Home, 40 Maple St., Madison.

Joseph F. Ray

1913-2003

DETROIT — Joseph F. Ray, 90, died Jan 30, 2003 at a Pittsfield health care facility following a long illness.

He was born in Vanceboro, Jan. 7, 1913, the son of Frank K. and Icy L. (Trafton) Ray. He was educated in schools of Vanceboro and a graduate of Vanceboro High School, class of 1932.

On March 7, 1935, Joe married Thelma Scribner in Vanceboro. Joe was employed for more than 40 years as a sales representative and distributor for Salad Master Cookware from Dallas, Texas. He loved to sell his "American made" cookware.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Thelma Ray of Detroit; four sons, Dennis Raye of Leesburg, Fla., Frank Raye of St. Albans, Paul Raye of Detroit, and Wayne Ray of Detroit; two daughters, Dale Seaburg of Chester, Conn., and Donna Bizeau of Palmyra; two brothers, Clifford Raye of Old Orchard and Aubrey Raye of Vanceboro; two sisters, Thelma Cropley of Clinton and Maxine Pease of Pittsfield; 22 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was predeceased by his son, Perry Raye.

There is no public visitation or service at this time.

A graveside service will be announced in the spring by the Brown Funeral Home, Newport.

Douglas W. Hardy

1915-2003

AUGUSTA — Douglas W. Hardy, 87, of Augusta, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation in Augusta.

He was born in Weld, Feb. 2, 1915, the son of Ronald and Theo (Collins) Hardy.

Douglas attended Wilton Academy. He married Hazel (Holman) Hardy Dec. 14, 1935. He worked for many years at Bass Shoe in Wilton and then later at Douglas Aircraft in California.

During World War II he attended bomb disposal school in Aberdeen, Md., after which he was sent to Iran and Egypt. After the war, he managed Har-Co Sporting Goods in Augusta. When the store closed, he went to work for the Maine Liquor Commission, working as a store manager in both Wilton and Farmington until his retirement.

In his spare time, Douglas enjoyed golf, hunting, fishing, gardening and talking to people.

Mr. Hardy was predeceased by his wife, Hazel in 2000.

He is survived by two sons, Spencer Hardy and his wife, Barbetta, of Westbrook, and Malcolm Hardy and his wife, Frances, of Greene; five grandchildren, Thomas, Joshua, Andrew and Kimble Hardy, and Karin Kelley; one stepgrandson, Aaron Stasulis, and one great-grandchild, Kasey Kelley.

A graveside service will be held in the spring at Pine Grove Cemetery, in Belgrade.

Richard Lewis Nason

1930-2003

CANAAN — Richard Lewis Nason, 72, of Canaan, went to be with the Lord unexpectedly Jan. 30, 2003, at Redington-Fairview Genaral Hospital in Skowhegan.

He was born in Madison, Feb. 18, 1930, the son of Lewis N. and Rose (Sidell) Nason. He was educated in the Madison and South Portland schools.

He served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict, serving on the USS Monterey aircraft carrier.

He married the former Elaine Tozier of Madison, July 28, 1956, in Madison. She died Dec. 31, 1994.

He worked for Madison Paper Mill from the 1950s to 1977 when they closed. He then went to work for Great Northern Paper in East Millinocket from 1977 until his retirement in 1992 for a total of 31 years and moved back to Madison at this time.

He was a member of the United Baptist Church in Madison and a member of the First Baptist Church in East Millinocket. He attended the Centenary United Methodist Church in Skowhegan. He was a member of the 4-H Club of Madison, Boy Scouts of Madison, the Kennebec Valley Grange in Madison, and the Local 37 in East Millinocket.

He is survived by a son, Eric J. Nason of East Millinockett; a daughter, Araminta Dorman and her husband, Ronald, of Canaan; four grandchildren, Marjorie Dorman, Richard Dorman, Jennifer Dorman, and Jessica Dorman, all of Canaan; two brothers, Lowell Nason and his wife, Rosalie, of Anson, and Stanley Nason and his wife, Beverly of Oakland Park, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Elsie Campbell of Canaan; and many nieces and nephews in Florida, Kansas and Alabama.

Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, and 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2, at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Centenary United Methodist Church, 113 Dr. Mann Road, Skowhegan, with the Rev. Nancy Collins and the Rev. Harold Dorman officiating. A gathering will follow in the Fellowship Hall. Spring burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Solon.

Donations may be made in his memory to the American Bible Society, 1865 Broadway, New York, N.Y., 10023, or to a charity of one's choice.

Richard Edward Olson Sr.

1935-2003

WATERVILLE — Richard Edward Olson Sr., 67, of Waterville, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Brockton, Mass., April 5, 1935, the son of Oscar H. and Bernice S. (Jones) Olson. He attended locals schools in Brockton and graduated with honors from Wentworth Institute in Boston, June 1961, with an associate's degree in electrical engineering, electronics option.

Richard was honorably discharged from the Air Force in November 1958. He was employed by the Mitre Corp. of Bedford, Mass., as an engineering assistant from July 1961 to April 2000.

Richard was a Senior Soldier in the Salvation Army, actively involved in many programs in the Nashua, N.H., Corps for several years, and a member of the Waterville Corps for the last three years. Richard won the 2001 Bell Ringer award.

Richard is survived by his wife of 38 years, Nancy Lee (Lindsay) Olson of Waterville; four sons and three daughters, Mark and Donna Melanson of Auburn, Pamela (Melanson) and Steven Corey of Nashua, Richard and Crissie Olson Jr. of Waterville, Robert Olson of Waterville, Karen (Olson) and Louis Whiting of Nashua, and Victor Angulo of San Francisco, and James and Susan Olson of Virginia Beach, Va. He was grandfather to Sandra Corey, Steven Corey, Robert Melanson, Jeffrey Kimball Jr., Kevin Olson, Heather Melanson, Brittany Olson, Meghan Whiting and Jennifer Whiting, Jeremiah Angulo, and stepgrandfather to Nicole, Billy, Christine and Tiffany of Auburn, and Austin and Daryle of Virginia Beach. He was the brother of Raymond Harold Olson of Stoughton, Mass., Warren Harding Olson of Chino, Calif., and Robert Kenneth Olson of Cincinnati.

He was predeceased by his parents, Oscar H. Olson and Bernice S. (Jones) Olson; sisters, Beatrice (Olson) Morando and Florence, (Olson) Depasqua; brother, Stanley Olson; and daughter, Wendy Olson.

Family and friends may visit from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2, at Veilleux Funeral Home, 8 Elm St., Waterville, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 3, with Capt. Sharon Harford, Salvation Army, officiating. Burial will follow at 1 p.m. in the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Salvation Army, Waterville or Nashua, N.H.

Marion Louise (Butterfield) York

1911-2003

NASHUA, N.H. — Marion Louise (Butterfield) York, 91, of Nashua, died at Hillsborough County Nursing Home Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003.

She was born in East Dixfield, Maine, Nov. 8, 1911, the daughter of Charles and Lucy (Merchant) Butterfield. Mrs. York was a longtime resident of Nashua, moving there in 1952.

She was the widow of William B. York who died in 1985.

As a young adult, Mrs. York was employed at the Hathaway Shirt Factory in Waterville, Maine, for a short time. When she first arrived in Nashua, she worked at Nashua Plastics for several years. Then she was employed as a cafeteria worker for the school department in Nashua for more than 10 years.

She and her husband enjoyed vacationing on East Pond in Oakland, Maine, for more than 25 years.

Mrs. York was educated in Maine.

Survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law, William A. and Barbara York of Nashua, and Leonard York of Nashua; four grandchildren, Cheryl York of Merrimack, Christine Reed and her husband, Kevin, of Nashua, Cynthia Acieri and her husband, Michael, of Londonderry, and Charles York of Nashua; and one great-granddaughter, Bridget York of Merrimack.

A graveside service and interment will be held in Belgrade, Maine in the spring.

Arrangements are in the care of Davis Funeral Home, Nashua.

Victory E. Giles

1918-2003

CANAAN — Victory E. Giles, 84, went to be with her Lord Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan.

She was born in Palmyra, Nov. 28, 1918, the daughter of Arthur and Iola (Boston) Parsons. She was educated in the Palmyra schools and Hartland Academy.

She married George Giles in Palmyra, Oct. 1, 1938; he died in 1986.

She was a homemaker for many years, then went to work at Ski-Land Woolen Mill in Clinton for 18 years.

She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Skowhegan and taught Sunday School at the Church of the Nazarene in Pittsfield, where she was also a member. Victory loved the Lord and lived for Him daily. She loved children and being a grandmother. She was a very generous person, making many mittens, socks, hats and afghans for family and friends.

She is survived by a son, Arthur Giles and his wife, Lynn, of Tennessee; a daughter, Beverly Giles and husband, Floyd Jr., of Canaan; four grandchildren, Sonda and her husband, Randy Chase I, of Palmyra, William Giles of San Diego, Calif., Dave Giles of Kansas City, Mo., and Vicki Davis and her husband, David, of Deer Isle; nine great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two sisters and three brothers.

Visitation is 4-6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, followed by a funeral service at 6 p.m. at the First Church of the Nazarene, North Avenue, Skowhegan, with the Rev. Verne Haskell officiating. Spring burial will be in Crocker Cemetery, St. Albans.

Donations may be made in her name to the First Church of the Nazarene, PO Box 513, Skowhegan 04976.

Arrangements are in the care of Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, Skowhegan.
