Charlotte Niles

AUGUSTA — Charlotte Niles, 90, of Augusta, died at her residence Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000.

She was born in Hallowell, June 22, 1910, the daughter of Fred A. and Nellie (Raynes) Niles. She attended Hallowell schools and graduated from Gorham Normal School, class of 1932.

Charlotte taught school in Hallowell for 22 years. She also taught percussion in her home for many years, and attended music camp in Castine for seven years. She was a percussionist in the Hallowell Band for many years.

She was a member of Hallowell First Baptist Church.

Her hands were always busy hooking rugs or crocheting lap robes for friends and nursing homes.

Her interest in steam locomotives dated from childhood, when on occasion she went to work with her father at Franconia Notch, N.H., where he superivsed the painting of the Frankenstein trestle.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Hazel Niles, in 1991, and Eunice Niles Chute, in 1979, and one brother, Myrton R. Niles, in 1979.

Charlotte is survived by five nieces and nephews, Alden L. Niles, of Hallowell, Rosanna Chute, of Brunswick, Kathleen Merrill, of Augusta, James A. Chute and David Chute, both of Brunswick; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

A private graveside service will be held at the conveniece of the family. A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church of Hallowell at a date to be announced.

Donations in Charlotte's memory, may be made to First Baptist Church of Hallowell, Union Street, Hallowell 04347.

Arrangements are by Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta.

Douin Service

AUGUSTA — A Mass of Christian burial for Henriette Rodrigue Douin, who died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, was celebrated Saturday morning, Sept. 30, at St. Augustine Catholic Church, with Rev. Richard St. Cyr, pastor, officiating.

Altar servers were Julie Brawn and Jeannette Beaudoin. Organist was David Stewart and soloist was Arthur Pare.

The first and second readings were given by Lucienne Lagueux. Taking part in the offertory procession were a sister, Yvette Sirois, and two sisters-in-law, Lorraine Doyon and Rita Doyon.

There were representatives from the church, Hammond Lumber Company, Ladies of St. Anne Society, Cushnoc Senior Citizens, and Augusta Rehabilitation Center.

Honorary pallbearers representing the Ladies of St. Anne were Marie-Ange Thibeau, Marie-Ann Desrosier, Loretta (Scottie) LeClair, and Alfredine Quirion, and representing Cushnoc Senior Citizens were Carmen Lalibertie, Lucienne Morin, Lucille Lessard, and Yvette Gilbert.

Active pallbearers were a grandson, Scott Rodrigue, a great-grandson, Ryan Rodrigue, a grandson-in-law, Tony LaPlante, nephews, Mike Bilodeau, Norman Sirois, Wilfred Sirois, and Donald Doyon, and a great-nephew, Jacob Stevens.

Burial was in St. Augustine Cemetery, where Rev. St. Cyr offered committal prayers.

Arrangements were by Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.

Irene M. Blanchette

AUGUSTA — Irene M. Blanchette, 80, of State Street, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, at her home after a brief illness.

She was born in Frenchville, April 10, 1920, the daughter of Honory and Marie (Vaillancourt) Trudelle.

Mrs. Blanchette was a communicant of St. Andrew's Catholic Church.

She was a homemaker for most of her life.

Mrs. Blanchette was predeceased by her husband, Emile J. Blanchette; a daughter, Germaine St. Armand; a grandson, Stephen St. Armand; and several brothers and sisters.

She is survived by a son, Reno Blanchette, of Augusta; a daughter, Muriel Blanchette, and her fiance, Maurice Philippon, of Augusta; three brothers, Gilman Trudelle, of Madawaska, Claude Trudelle, of Los Angeles, Calif., and Ned Dube, of Auburn; two sisters, Lucille Cyr, of Madawaska, and Elsie Labato, of Plainville, Conn.; a grandson, Michael Duplessis, of Ocean Park; a great-grandson, Joshua Duplessis, of Ocean Park; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit 2-4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, at St. Andrew's Catholic Church, St. Andrew's Street, Augusta. Burial will follow, at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Old Belgrade Road, Augusta.

Donations may be made to Ronald McDonald House, 250 Brackett St., Portland, 04102.

Patricia L. Garceau

WEST GARDINER — Patricia L. Garceau, 33, of Primrose Lane, West Gardiner, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2000, at Maine Medical Center, Portland, following a long battle with cancer.

She was born in Taunton, Mass., Aug. 26, 1967, the daughter of Louis A. and Mary Haskell Garceau, and graduated from Taunton High School.

Patricia was extremely devoted to her children and her job.

She was a personal care attendant for the elderly at Home Resource of Maine in Farmingdale.

Patricia is survived by her mother of West Gardiner; three children, Dorothy Garceau, Joshua Guenard, and Emily Garceau, all of West Gardiner; five sisters, Deborah Garceau, of Pawtucket, R.I., Mary Garceau, of Taunton, Mass., Theresa Garceau, of West Gardiner, Laurie Garceau, of Taunton, Mass., and Loretta Marshall, of Taunton, Mass.; several nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts and cousins.

Visiting hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13, at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, at St. Joseph's Church, Gardiner. Burial will follow in Cherry Hill Cemetery, West Gardiner.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, New England Division, 52 Federal St., Brunswick 04011.

Esther F.H. Gleason

LEWISTON — Esther F. Hinkley Gleason, 86, formally of Manchester, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at Clover Manor.

She was born March 17, 1914, in Bowdoinham, the daughter of John S. and Cynthia A. Stetson Parker, and graduated from Richmond High School in 1932.

Esther married Charles L. Hinkley in 1963. He passed away in 1973.

She later married Wallace S. Gleason in 1980, who passed away within the same year.

Esther worked for the state in the motor vehicle department where she was the chief clerk of financial responsibility for over 30 years, retiring in 1963. She was then self-employed for 16 years, registering tractor-trailers.

Esther enjoyed sewing, working with flowers and knitting, but most of all she had a great love for cats.

She was predeceased by a sister, Bertha McCall.

Esther is survived by a stepson, Edward B. Hinkley, and his wife, Gaetane, of Poland; a sister, Mrs. Richard (Beatrice) Parent, of Warren; a cousin, Willis Lane, of Florida; a niece, Mrs. Steve (Linda) Thomson, of New Hampshire; and a nephew, Mr. Richard Parent Jr., and his wife, Ann, of Warren.

Visiting hours were held Friday, Nov. 10, at Crosman Funeral Home, Maine Street, Lisbon, where a funeral service was held Saturday, Nov. 11. Committal was in Hillside Cemetery.

James M. Raymond

GARDINER — James M. Raymond, formerly James M. Horne, 53, of Mechanic Street, formerly of Lebanon, N.H., died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta, after a long illness.

He was born in Sanford, May 12, 1947, the son of Angelo and Dorothy (Raymond) Horne. Mr. Raymond was a graduate of Cony High School, in Augusta, and was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Vietnam War.

He had been employed by Professional Moving Services, in Lebanon, and had previously been employed as a security guard at Dartmouth College, in New Hampshire.

Mr. Raymond was a former member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, in Lebanon, and was an active participant in Alcoholics Anonymous.

He is survived by his parents, Angelo Horne, of Sanford, and Dorothy (Raymond) Horne, of Augusta; a son, James Horne, of Modesto, Calif.; two daughters, Julie Horne, of Modesto, and Valerie Cook, of Lebanon; two brothers, Reuben Horne and Mark H. Horne, both of Lebanon; three sisters, Deborah Boivin, of Hartland, Vt., Lynn Hodgdon, of Chatham, Va., and Sabrina Doucette, of Sidney; three grandchildren; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no public visiting hours. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 27, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to your local chapter of Alcoholic Anonymous.

Kenneth W. Foster

RICHMOND — Kenneth "Bucky" Walter Foster, 56, formerly of Pittston, passed away Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, at Togus Veterans Hospital after a long illness.

He was born Dec. 6, 1943, in Gardiner, the son of Walter and Virginia (Stratton) Foster, and attended Richmond schools.

Upon graduation, Bucky served 10 years in the U.S. Navy as an engineman, serving on a troop transport ship during the Vietnam War, and later served in Guam.

Bucky was a paid-up-for-life member of American Legion Post 132, in Richmond, and a longtime member of the Richmond Fire Dept.

He enjoyed crafts, reading, cars and military history.

He was predeceased by a sister, Nadine Foster.

Bucky is survived by his wife, Georgia Foster, of East Pittston; sons, Clint, of Arizona, Kenneth, of Topsham, Marc, of East Pittston, and Joseph, of East Pittston; a daughter, Carrie, of California; a sister, Sharon Carver, of Richmond; a brother, Roland Foster, of Richmond; three grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside service with American Legion military honors will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28, at Richmond Cemetery, Richmond, with the American Legion chaplain officiating.

Arrangements are under the care of Kincer Funeral Home, 14 South Pleasant St., Richmond.

Esther F. Jordan

WEST GARDINER — Esther F. Jordan, 98, the fifth member of her family to be awarded West Gardiner's Boston Post Cane as the town's oldest resident, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at Augusta Rehabilitation Center.

She was born in West Gardiner, April 15, 1902, the daughter of Lewis and Neva (Goodwin) Fuller, and was educated in West Gardiner schools

As a young woman, she moved to South Portland, where she lived for several years before returning to West Gardiner.

She was an avid reader, until her eyesight failed her. She then used "talking books" through Lithgow Library in Augusta.

On her 97th birthday, she was presented the Boston Post Cane.

She was predeceased by a son, Benjamin Jordan, in 2000.

Survivors include two daughters, Marjorie L. Werner, and Margaret E. Nelson, both of South Portland; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held in the spring, in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, South Portland.

Arrangements are by Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland.
