Ruth T. Weymouth

AUGUSTA — Ruth Turner Weymouth, 99, passed away at Heritage Manor in Winthrop, Friday, Feb. 1, 2002.

She was born in Augusta, Dec. 15, 1902, the daughter of John Franklin and Grace (Lougee) Turner. Ruth graduated from Colby College of Waterville in 1926 where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority.

She taught in public schools in Connecticut and Dover-Foxcroft, Maine. In 1928 she was married to Dr. Raymond Weymouth and lived in Bar Harbor where Dr. Weymouth practiced medicine. In 1944 she returned to Augusta, where she worked for the Maine Department of Human Services as a social worker until her retirement in 1972.

Ruth was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Augusta, and she also belonged to the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Her interests included ceramics; her pets, including her cat, Sammy; sewing and reading.

Ruth was predeceased by her parents and her sister, Florence Fowler, in 1972. She is survived by her nephew, John Turner Fowler and his wife, Sandra, of Wayne. Ruth also leaves her goddaughter, Emily Schroeder, and her cousin's wife, Sarah Turner, of Florida. Ruth will be missed by her friend and caregiver of four-and-a-half years, Beverly Adams, and Beverly's children, by Tim and Christy Adams, and Carol Sturtevant, as well as her neighbors, Priscilla and Austin Wilkins.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, One Church St., Augusta. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Augusta with the Rev. John Keggi officiating. Spring burial will be at Forest Grove Cemetery in Augusta. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Ruth's memory to the Kennebec Valley Humane Society, Pet Haven Lane, Augusta ME 04330.

Roger J. Bourassa, D.M.D.

1914-2002

WINSLOW — Roger J. Bourassa, D.M.D., 88, of 4 Frawly St., Winslow, died early Friday morning, Oct. 4, 2002, at a local hospital following a very brief illness.

He was born in Winslow, Sept. 4, 1914. The second-youngest of 11 children of Louis and Emma (Hallee) Bourassa, he was the last surviving member of the family.

He was educated at local schools, including Winslow High and Colby College. He received his degree in dentistry from the University of Louisville, Ky., in 1939, graduating third in his class.

During World War II, Dr. Bourassa was on active duty from October 1942 to March 1946, serving as a lieutenant aboard the escort carrier Kadashan Bay. The ship was hit and nearly sunk by a Japanese kamikaze plane in the South Pacific during the retaking of the Philippines.

Dr. Bourassa located his dental practice on Main Street in Waterville and saw patients there for 38 years. He was especially appreciated for his gentle approach and his enormous stock of stories and jokes.

A parishioner of St. John the Baptist Parish in Winslow ever since its foundation, he served in many capacities. He was on the Parish Council and the fund-raising committee, and was a Eucharistic minister, an acolyte and a member of the Rosary Crusade. He was also in the first group of people to sign up for weekly prayer at the Eucharistic Adoration Chapel established by the Sister Servants of the Blessed Sacrament.

Dr. Bourassa was an avid gardener especially known for his plot of high-bush blueberries, planted 39 years ago and still producing (90 quarts this year). He enjoyed the outdoors and had a deep love for all aspects of God's creation, from the smallest flower to the Milky Way. Family members say he never met a tree he didn't like.

Dr. Bourassa had a lifelong love of woodworking, a skill he learned by watching his contractor father and by trying out tools with his brother, Henry, in the family barn. After his retirement in 1979, he became a dedicated wood carver and produced numerous relief carvings and statues.

Dr. Bourassa was a member of the American Dental Association, the Maine Dental Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 08835, the American Legion Post 5, and the National Wood Carvers Association.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Roma (Richard) Bourassa of Winslow; two daughters, Louise and her husband, Kevin Perrotta, of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Jeanne Locke of Bethel Park, Pa.; a son, Paul of Winslow; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6 at Veilleux Funeral Home, 8 Elm St., Waterville. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 7 at St. John the Baptist Church, 47 Monument St., Winslow, with the Rev. Georges Plante officiating. Burial will follow at St. Francis Cemetery.

Family and friends are invited to a buffet lunch at the VFW Hall in Winslow after the graveside ceremony.

Memorial donations may be made to St. John the Baptist Church or the Sisters Servants of the Blessed Sacrament, 101 Silver St., Waterville.

Elaine H. Webber

1916-2002

Elaine H. Webber, 86, of Kelton Road, died Oct. 5, 2002, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta after a brief illness.

She was born in Alberta, Canada, June 27, 1916, the daughter of William G. Hughes and Grace E. Hughes.

Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Webber was employed as an auditor by the Internal Revenue Service in Augusta for many years. She was the fourth woman in Maine to become an IRS auditor. She was previously employed by Bates Manufacturing Co. for several years.

Mrs. Webber was a member of Churchill Baptist Church of Augusta and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Her husband, Linwood Andrew Webber died June 22, 1997.

She has no surviving immediate family members. Elaine lived on the Blaine Road in Farmingdale with David and Betty Roberts for a short time.

Visiting hours are 2-3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8 at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, where a funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Burial with committal prayers will be in Chadwick Hill Cemetery in China.

Memorial contributions may be made to Churchill Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 5190, Augusta 04332.

Harriet Julia Sweetland

1900-2002

MANCHESTER — Harriet Julia Sweetland, 102, of Pond Road died peacefully in her sleep after a pleasant Thanksgiving Day with her family.

Harriet was born in Whitefield, May 27, 1900, the daughter of William and Ann (Williams) Grady. She married George P. Sweetland May 3, 1922, and they moved to Manchester in 1943.

Harriet enjoyed her family and friends and the beauty of the seasons. She especially loved watching her great-grandchildren grow and play. She was involved in the Grange for 70 years, the Telephone Pioneers of America, Manchester Cooperative Extension and St. Mary's Guild, and was a founding member of the YNI Club. She was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church for many years.

Harriet was predeceased by her husband, George P. Sweetland; a son, William Sweetland; a daughter, Barbara Sylvester; a son-in-law, Robert F. Sylvester; her brothers, Ambrose, Arthur, William, Charles, John and Joseph Grady; and sisters Edith Grady and Katherine Hersom Hayes.

She is survived by her sister, Ann Collier of Manchester; her grandchildren, Stephen J. Sylvester and David J. Sylvester of Manchester, William J. Sylvester and his wife, Elfi, of Monmouth, Robert J. Sylvester of Juneau, Alaska, Barbara J. Pellett and her husband, Mark, of Winthrop and Elizabeth J. Raph of Winthrop; and her great-grandchildren, Adam and Aurora Sylvester of Juneau, Andrew Pellett of Winthrop, Sean Raph, Caitlin Raph and Patrick Raph of Winthrop; also, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins with whom she enjoyed visiting.

A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, Dec 4, at 3 p.m. at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.

Gilda M. Allen

1924-2003

AUGUSTA — Gilda M. Allen, 78, of Glenridge Drive, formerly of Washington Street and Oxford Street Extension, died Jan. 24, 2003, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Glenridge Drive after a long illness.

She was born in Augusta, June 9, 1924, the daughter of Joseph Veilleux and Anna (Quirion) Veilleux.

Mrs. Allen was a homemaker in her own home for most of her life, but she was employed by Hallowell Shoe Co., Gardiner Shoe Co. and Bates Manufacturing Co. for several years.

Gilda was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and St. John the Baptist Union of America Conseil Jeanne D'Arc.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Henry, Napoleon, Lionel and Alfred "Shorty" Veilleux; and two sisters, Christine Beaudoin and Joffrine Rodrigue.

Surviving are three sons, Larry Allen of Sherbrooke, Quebec, Steven Allen of Augusta and Robert Allen of Portland; one daughter, Susan McCrimmon of Whitefield; two brothers, Joseph Arthur Veilleux and Aime Veilleux, both of Augusta; one sister, Theresa Bean of Augusta; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as two special friends, Linda Breslin of Winslow and Diane Gilbert of Augusta.

There will be no public visiting hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 27 at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Spring burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, Augusta.

Arrangements are in the care of Plummer Funeral Home, Augusta.

Wayne Gamage Anderson

1938-2003

OLD ORCHARD BEACH — Wayne Gamage Anderson, 64, formerly of Cape Elizabeth died Jan. 23, 2003, at his home on Old Salt Road.

He was born in Damariscotta, April 25, 1938, a son of Gordon O. and Helen W. Gamage Anderson. He graduated from Lincoln Academy, class of 1955, Bowdoin College, class of 1959, and received a master's degree from Syracuse University.

Mr. Anderson served in the Army in Germany from 1956-1958.

He was employed as a guidance counselor in the Scarborough school system for many years. He was an avid sailor, master bridge player, and a voracious reader.

Survivors include a son, Eric; a daughter, Ingrid Anderson; a brother, G. Wells Anderson of Concord, N.H.; two sisters, Susan Reed of Manchester, and Kristin Johnson of Belgrade Lakes; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at the Old Orchard Beach Funeral Home, 36 Portland Ave., Old Orchard Beach.

In lieu of flowers, those who desire may make memorial donations to the Scarborough Public Library, 48 Gorham Road, Scarborough 04074.

Lawrence Blanchard

1929-2003

WAKEFIELD, Mass. —Lawrence Blanchard, 73, of Wakefield, died unexpectedly Thursday, March 13, 2003, at the Veterans Hospital in Boston.

He was born July 29, 1929, in Dover-Foxcroft, the son of Ray and Jenna Blanchard. Lawrence graduated from Madison High School in 1948.

Shortly after graduation, he joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Germany where he took part in Operation Berlin Air Lift. He was an Air Force firefighter.

Survivors include his four children, Jeanine McCauley and Ray, Jack and Shaun Blanchard; and his seven grandchildren. He was the brother of Corinne Breault of Madison, Earl Blanchard of Augusta, and the late Mike Blanchard.

Relatives and friends attended a funeral Mass celebrated at St. Agnes Church, 186 Woburn St., Reading, Mass. Arrangements are by Joseph Doherty Funeral Home in Reading. As directed, Lawrence was cremated.

Nancy I. Currier

1932-2003

SIDNEY — Nancy I. Currier, 71, of Town Farm Road, died unexpectedly Saturday, May 31, 2003, at the home of her daughter, Sandra Hinckley.

She was born in South Weymouth, Mass., on May 17, 1932, the daughter of Robert Jones and Viola (Clark) Jones.

Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Currier was employed as a home health aide in Bangor for several years. She was previously employed by Wishing Well Motel in Manchester from 1975-1985.

Nancy was a member of Chelsea Praise & Worship Church. Along with other interests and activities, she was an avid Bingo player.

Her husband, Leon A. Currier, died in 1982. She was also predeceased by an infant son, Charles Currier in 1963; and a brother, Robert Jones.

Surviving is a son, Michael L. Currier and his wife Adrielle of Waterville; two daughters, Sandra Hinckley and her husband Ronald of Sidney and Donna Machardy and her husband Patrick of Plymouth, Mass. and their foster daughter Nichole; one brother, Harry Jones of Massachusetts; three sisters, Barbara Jones and Thelma Burbank, both of Massachusetts, and Shirley Jones of Florida; four grandchildren, Melissa and Christopher Stephens and Sarah and Brittany Machardy.

At her request, there will be no public visiting hours. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Nancy Currier Memorial Fund, c/o Sandra Hinkley, 45 Town Farm Road, Sidney 04330.

Arrangements are under the care of Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.

Maynard L. Dixon

2003

PORTLAND — Maynard L. Dixon, 72, of Inverness Street, died Thursday, May 29, 2003, at Maine Medical Center in Portland following a brief illness.

He was born in Richmond, a son of Carl M. and Nettie Lewis Dixon. He attended Schools in Bath and Portland, graduating from Deering High School, class of 1948. He also attended Portland Junior College.

Mr. Dixon worked with his late father in the appliance refinishing and printing business in 1952, and then worked at Casco Printing & Southworth Machine for 19 years. In 1983, he purchased Cushing Press Inc., which he owned and operated until his retirement in 2000.

Mr. Dixon's mother was one of the last citizens of Perkins, born on Swan Island on the Kennebec River. His love for the island sparked his interest in pursuing the family genealogy.

He was proud of his family heritage and became a member of the Mayflower Society. He also looked forward to playing with his grandchildren. He enjoyed photography, big band music, and was an avid Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan.

He was predeceased by his wife, Joanne Donovan Dixon in 1995.

He leaves a son, John, and his wife, Robyn Dixon of Portland; a daughter, Gail Tewhey, and her husband, Michael of Westbrook; two grandchildren,Ryan J. and Nicole J. Dixon; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He also leaves his dearest friends, Don Gallant and Claudia Fossett, whose care and friendship have been a tremendous comfort to Maynard and his family.

Visiting hours will be held from 4-7 p.m. Sunday, June 1, at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., where a funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, June 2. Burial will follow at Brooklawn Memorial Park in Portland.

The family would like to acknowledge the staff at the Gibson Pavilion at Maine Medical Center for their compassionate care and support during Mr. Dixon's illness.
