William F. Flynt

SOUTH PORTLAND — William F. Flynt, 79, of Ocean Street, died Wednesday morning, Feb. 23, 2000, at South Portland Nursing Home.

He was born Jan. 1, 1921, in Augusta, son of Leigh and Marion Kimball Fisher Flynt, and attended Augusta schools and Bowdoin College in Brunswick.

He served as a fighter pilot in the winter of 1943-1944 with the Army Air Corps during World War II. His plane crash-landed in Germany and he was taken prisoner; he was set free by the Russians in April 1944. After his military service, he graduated from the University of Maine at Orono with a civil engineering degree.

Mr. Flynt had lived for many years in Poland, where he was very active in community affairs.

He had been employed by the state for many years. When he retired in 1983, he was the gas engineer for the Public Utilities Commission. He had also been self-employed as a surveyor and soil engineer overseeing design and development of roads and land. He was also employed by Armitage Co. as a consultant and blueprint designer in the Portland area. He had served as city engineer for South Portland.

He enjoyed sailing and had a sailboat built in England, a 36-foot Freedom, and sailed it across the Atlantic with his sons in 1985. He was also an avid downhill skier and fly fisherman.

He was a member of the World War II Fighter Pilot Organization.

He married Louise Lapointe in 1975 in Portland.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Flynt, of South Portland; two sons, William A. Flynt and John Flynt, both of Poland; two daughters, Elizabeth Walters, of Gardiner, and Mary Pignata, of California; three granddaughters, three grandsons, and two great-granddaughters.

There will be no visiting hours.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 3, at the Poland Community Church, Route 26, Poland Village. Arrangements are by Alpha Cremation Service of Biddeford.

Paul T. Kimball

LITCHFIELD — Paul True Kimball, 77, of Hallowell Road, in Litchfield, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at Maine Veterans Home, in Augusta, after a yearlong illness.

He was born in Litchfield the first of four children of Lawrence and Florence (True) Kimball. The family moved to Auburn and then to Portland, where Paul graduated from Deering High School. After graduation he attended the New England Aircraft School in Boston, where he graduated with the highest scores in the school's history. Later Paul enlisted in the Navy and served in World War II aboard the USS Intrepid as a machinist mate 1st class in the South Pacific.

Upon returning from his tour of duty, he obtained his pilot's license and was employed by Twitchell's Air Service in Portland as a flight instructor and bush pilot, flying hunting and fishing parties into the then inaccessible northern Maine lakes and woods region.

Paul and his wife, the former Patricia Sally Hopkins, lived in Portland and then Fairfield where like his father, he went to work for Gulf Oil Corp. The Kimballs then moved to Barrington, R.I., where their children were raised and Paul continued his avid pursuit of the outdoors and fishing on the Narragansett Bay, where he became a skilled striped-bass fisherman.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, West Barrington Methodist Church, as well as the local square-dancing organizations.

Once returning to Litchfield in the late '70s, the retired Mr. Kimball enjoyed working part-time for Barrows Chevrolet in Winthrop as an auto mechanic. Once again he had the opportunity to return to his beloved Maine woods, lakes, streams and the company of old friends and family.

He was predeceased by his wife.

Survivors include his daughter, Kathleen Rinden, of Phippsburg; sister, Jacqueline Eagles, of Litchfield; and eight nieces and nephews.

Burial and graveside service will be held in the spring at the North Cemetery in Litchfield. Arrangements are under the care of Kincer Funeral Home of Richmond.

Galen L. Trask Sr.

VIENNA — Galen L. Trask Sr., 57, of Vienna, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at his home following a short illness.

He was born April 29, 1942, in Columbia, son of Ernest and Helen (Carter) Trask, and attended Farmington schools.

He was employed by William Worthing in Manchester five to six years before being employed at Franklin Shoe Co., in Farmington.

He moved back to Vienna in 1991 to live and take care of his mother.

He loved the outdoors, to fish, hunt and do mechanical work.

He is survived by his mother, Helen Carter Trask, of Vienna; two daughters, Galene, and husband, Larry Huard, of Madison; Cheral, and husband, Michael Cooley, of Canaan; son, Galen Trask Jr., of West Gardiner; five sisters, Agatha Mills, of Strong; Winola Barter, of Lewiston; Rachel, and husband, Charles Meader, Glenice McKechnie, and Ernestine, and husband, Barry Emery, all of Vienna; brother-in-law, LaFayette Hatch, of Winthrop; sister-in-law, Zeta Trask, of Livermore; grandchildren, Joshua and Adam Huard, and Derek and Erika Cooley; stepchildren, Bernard Stickney, of Mars Hill; Mark, and wife, Valerie Stickney, of Chelsea; Gordon, and wife, Debbie Stickney, of Chelsea; Barbara Stickney and Brian Benner, of Madison; Pamela, and her husband, James Goodwin, of Winslow; 11 step-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his father, Ernest Trask, a sister, Edith Hatch, and a brother, Gerald Trask.

Visitation hours will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, at Adams Funeral Home, 3 Court St., Farmington.

A funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 28, at the funeral home with the Rev. Samuel and Sharon Morse officiating.

Kenneth L. Emery

RICHMOND — Kenneth L. Emery, who died Feb. 22, 2000, also was survived by his wife of 24 years, Jean Mount Emery, of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; four stepchildren, who he raised as his own, and their spouses, David and Robin Porter, of Hubbardston, Mass.; Charley and Tammy Porter, of Gardiner; Tim and Julie Porter, of Lisbon; and Suzanne and Ron Cook, of Monmouth; 12 stepgrandchildren, Gabrielle and Jamie Porter, Natorra-Lee and Zachary Porter, Savannah and Tabitha Porter, and Kirstin, Cody, Kaylin, Cameron, Kira and Kimberly Cook; and two sisters-in-law and their husbands, Sharon and Ben Bramhall, of Concord, Mass., and Lynda and David Hawke, of Augusta.

Burdzel service

AUGUSTA — A Mass of Christian burial for Statia S. Burdzel, who died Feb. 22, 2000, was celebrated at St. Andrews Church at 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 25.

The Rev. Michael Seavey was the celebrant. Jerry Nault, son-in-law of Statia, did the first two readings and led prayers. Josh Ackerman and Derek Cloutier were the gift bearers. The pallbearers were Gregory French, Shawn Cloutier, Steve Ackerman, Eugene Cybart Jr., Bryan Burdzel and Jeffrey Burdzel. Linda McCormick was the organist and Dot Stinson was the soloist.

Attendees included many members of the community, including representatives from St. Andrews Church and the office of the Augusta City Clerk.

Spring burial will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery in Manchester.

Mary E. Hintze

YARMOUTH — Mary Elizabeth Hintze, 57, of Blueberry Cove, died Thursday, April 27, 2000, at her residence after a long illness.

She was born in Louisville, Ky., daughter of E. Rutledge and Mary Elizabeth (Parker) Lilly, and graduated from Louisville Collegiate School, class of 1961, and Smith College, class of 1965.

Mrs. Hintze spent most of her life dedicated to her family and to being a mother, which she took seriously. She was an avid reader, enjoyed gardening, community volunteerism and the theater.

Survivors include her husband, Robert, of Blueberry Cove; son, Robert Lieffers, of Burlington, Vt.; two brothers, J. Cooper Lilly, of Prospect, Ky., and E. Rutledge Lilly Jr., of El Paso, Texas; and one sister, Julia Atterberry, of Milwaukee, Wis.

There will be no prior visitation. A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family with arrangements by Lindquist Funeral Home in Yarmouth.

Helen W. Starkey

SOUTH CHINA — Helen Webber Starkey, 86, of Lakeview Drive, died Thursday, April 27, 2000, at her home.

She was born in China, Oct. 27, 1913, the daughter of Cony Norman and Pearle Augustus (Starrett) Webber, and was a graduate of Erskine Academy, in South China. Helen then graduated from Farmington Normal School and taught all eight grades at the one-room school in Branch Mills and also in Weeks Mills.

She had also been employed by Edmund Dowe in his general store in the 1930s, and was a clerk at the South China Post Office. She was employed for many years as a telephone operator for the China Telephone Co.

She married George Albert Starkey, July 6, 1935, in China. Helen was employed at S&M Market adjacent to her home in South China; her husband, George, and her son-in-law, Normand Marois, built the store about 35 years ago.

Mr. Starkey died July 19, 1987, and her brother, Richard Webber, and her sister, Marjorie Webber, both died previously.

Survivors include her two sons, John A. Starkey, and wife, Colleen, of Clyde, N.Y.; and Richard G. Starkey, and wife, Diane, of Rochester, N.H.; three daughters, Arlene M. Smith, and husband, Ernest, of South China, Julia A. Marois, and husband, Normand, of South China, and Theresa H. Pottle, and husband, Neal, of Palermo; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren, and several cousins. A great-great-grandson is expected to be born in the near future.

Visiting hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, May 1, at Gray & Pratt Funeral Home, Windsor Neck Road, Windsor, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 2. Burial will be held later at Chadwick Hill Cemetery in South China.

The family suggests memorial gifts be sent to the South China Volunteer Fire Department, c/o Richard Morse, President, PO Box 325, South China 04358.

Paquin service

AUGUSTA — Committal prayers for Lt. Roland J. Paquin (ret.), who died April 18, 2000, were offered Thursday, April 20, at the Rev. Leonard LeClair Memorial Chapel in Augusta with the Rev. Don Williams, State Police Chaplin, officiating. There were representatives from Maine State Police.

Members of the color guard from the Maine State Police were Troopers Scott Bryant, Stephen Hills, Nicholas Grass and Brian Scott. Pallbearers were Roland Paquin Jr., Trooper Paul Stewart, Trooper Scott Ireland, Leo J. Murphy and L. Michael Murphy. The American flag was folded by Leo J. Murphy and L. Michael Murphy and was presented to Mr. Paquin's wife, Adella (Kubicki) Paquin, by L. Michael Murphy. Burial followed in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

Harold Peterson

WEST SEATTLE, Wash. — Lt. Col. Harold Peterson passed away May 28, 2000, in West Seattle, at the age of 91.

He was born Sept. 15, 1908, in Wiscasset, Maine, the son of Laura (Pendleton) and Augustus Peterson. Harold graduated from Brunswick High School.

He resided in Brunswick until entering the Army, where he served from 1941 through 1960, serving during World War II and Korean War.

During the 1960s he worked for the Navy, in Maryland, retiring in the early 1970s to Seattle.

Harold was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Dorothy Peterson.

He was the beloved father of Lorraine Murphy, of Hallowell, Maine, and Helen (Michael) Johns, of Seattle; grandfather of nine; great-grandfather of eight; and great-great-grandfather of six.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 23, at Tahoma National Cemetery, Kent, Wash.

Arrangements are under the direction of Howden-Kennedy Funeral Home, West Seattle.

Lucy B. Plummer

AUGUSTA — Lucy B. Plummer, 82, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at Augusta Rehabilitation Center, after a long illness.

She was born in Caribou, July 29, 1917, the daughter of Temperance and Sandy (Skidgell) Towers.

Lucy spent her life as a homemaker, and was involved in many children's lives as a special grammy, especially to Wendy Moore.

She loved to spend time at camp, in Eustis, with her family and friends. She enjoyed visits to the coast, and stopping at yard and lawn sales. Her many cats were an important part of her life.

She was predeceased by her husband, Norman Plummer, and two sons, William Spaulding, and Arthur Kenney.

Surviving are a son, Edward Spaulding, of Waterville, and his children, Bert, Edward, William, Timothy, Daniel, and Roy Spaulding, and Lisa Madore, son, Roy Spaulding, of Lebanon, Conn., who, because of illness, couldn't be here and wanted her to know he loved her very much, and his children, William, John, Sherri, and Jennifer Spaulding, and Loretta Lathe, son, Thomas Giddings, of Selena, Ala., and his children, Charles, Montgomery and Renee Giddings; daughter, Loretta Rabassa, of Fairfield Center, and her children, Vicki Tourtelotte, Nancy Wood, Ernest, Juliann, Diana, and John O'Connor; and granddaughter, Heidi Kenny. Also surviving are a sister, Stella Skidgel, of Gardiner; and many great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 11, at Allen Cemetery, Route 17, Chelsea.

Those who wish may make memorial donations to American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2208, Augusta 04330.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Funeral Home, Oakland.
