Helen Monchak Waldo

JEFFERSON — Helen Monchak Waldo, 91, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at the Country manor Nursing Home in Coopers Mills.

She was born in New York City to Hungarian immigrant parents on Nov. 23, 1909, the first of three children. Her mother died when she was 16, and her father the day after her wedding to George, in 1931.

She and George became the guardians of her younger sister, known as "Lullie," then aged 16. George and Helen lived in New Jersey, where their first child, Kenny, was born, then moved to Baltimore, where George had been born. Five years later, Linda was born, and five years after that came Gerri. All three children attended St. Ambrose School, and the whole family attended St. Ambrose Catholic Church.

Helen was very active in the church and volunteered in the office of the school, as well as typist for the priests in the church. In 1948, Baltimore City began a School Crossing Guard program. Helen was in the first graduating class of that branch of the Police Department. In 1960, she left that position and worked for the Department of Social Services until her retirement in 1971.

In 1971, George and Helen moved to Holiday, Fla., where both became active in the community and in the local Catholic church. It was around that time that Helen's sight, which had always been poor, began to worsen. George and Helen enjoyed taking cruises, and renewed their marriage vows on one of the cruises in 1980. They also took great delight in escaping the heat of the summer in Florida by visiting their children and grandchildren in North Carolina, Maryland and Maine.

It was during this period that Helen's younger sister, Lullie, and her brother, Steve, as well as her oldest grandson, Geoff, died.

By the time George, always known in the family as "Daddy," died in January of 1981, Helen was legally blind. Although she had depended on him for more than 49 years, Helen continued to live, and eventually enjoy, life again. She still visited the family and became very involved in The Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired and Blind. Until her serious illness in 1997, she was a participant in a weekly two-hour current events discussion group at The Lighthouse. She continued to swim in the Gulf of Mexico each week and took advantage of many activities at the Holiday Lake Civic Association. She rode her three-wheel bike daily, she was Mrs. Santa Claus for many years at the annual Christmas party, a leprechaun on St. Patrick's Day, the Easter Bunny, Betsy Ross on 4th of July, and a member of a ladies "kitchen band" which performed at local events and nursing homes.

She was a communicant at St. Ignatius of Antioch Catholic Church in Tarpon Springs. In 1998, her declining health necessitated her giving up living alone, and she moved to Maine, where she resided at Country Manor Nursing Home in Coopers Mills. She enjoyed the visits from her loving family, especially her granddaughter, Tina, and great-grandsons, Ryan and Zachary. Her son, Ken Waldo and his wife, Shirley, daughter, Linda Fecik, daughter, Gerri Moylan and her husband, Patrick, grandchildren, Nancy Paulette, Barbie Montemayor, Trish Magee, Chuck Waldo, Terry Fecik, Kim Carruth, Mike Fecik, Ben Moylan, Tina Hall, seven great-grandchildren, four step-granddaughters, and eight great-grandchildren survive her.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 7, at the North Windsor Baptist Church, Route 32, Windsor, with the Rev. David Gorton officiating. A light luncheon and reception will follow the service. Gray & Pratt Funeral Directors in Windsor are in charge of service plans.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to "The Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired and Blind, 8610 Wilson Boulevard, Port Richey FL 34668.
